Introduction 

On June 13, 2023, the 10th Senate was inaugurated with the emergence of Senator Godswill Akpabio, GCON as President of the Nigeria Senate. Today, the Senate clocks 2 years, this is therefore a mid-term review of performance of Distinguished Senator Eteng Jonah Williams, Representing Cross River Central Senatorial District.

In two years, Senator Eteng Williams showcases an enviable scorecard of effective representation as a legislator par excellence. His track record in the Senate is marked by the sponsorship of relevant bills, consistent constituency outreach, community interventions, human capacity development and empowerments. 

 

Bills and Motions: 

Senator Williams has demonstrated legislative prowess by sponsoring the following bills:

1. Federal Medical Centres Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024 (SB 525), which seeks to establish the Federal Medical Centre in Ugep. This institution will eliminate the burden of long-distance travel for tertiary medical care, bringing state-of-the-art healthcare closer to the people of Cross River Central

 

2. Chartered Institute of Petroleum and Gas Engineers of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill, 2024: Currently awaiting its third and final reading, the bill seeks to enhance professionalism within the petroleum and gas engineering sector in the country. Key objectives of the bill include improving collaboration between academia and the industry, raising professional standards to meet international best practices, and creating a platform for networking among professionals.

Motions Raised

Senator Williams has proactively addressed pressing national issues through critical motions, including:

1. Relief Support for Citizens Affected by Communal Clashes: Advocating federal intervention for victims of the Ovonum and Ofatura communal conflict.

2. Curbing Illegal Oil Exploitation in Nigeria: Addressing the economic and environmental dangers of unregulated oil activities.

3. Security and Protection for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs): Ensuring government action to safeguard displaced populations in Cross River Central.

4. Revitalization of Technical and Vocational Education: A motion calling for urgent measures to salvage Nigeria's collapsing technical education sector.

5. Reform of Nigeria's Counterpart Fund Policy: Proposing the establishment of a National Counterpart Fund Account for better financial management and project execution.

 

Solar Powered Boreholes:

To ensure sustainable water supply, particularly in regions that suffer from water scarcity.

Senator Eteng Williams have constructed and completed solar-powered water projects in following locations:

Solar-Powered Street Lights:

In line with his 'Project Light Up Central' Initiative, Senator Eteng Williams have installed quality solar lights in the following communities: 

1. Yakurr LGA – Ugep, Ekori, Idomi, Mkpani, Inyima, Assiga, Nko, Idomi

2. Obubra LGA - Obubra Urban, Oderegha/Ovukwa, Ofumbungha/Yala, Isobo Otaka, Isobo Biko-Biko and Onyodama

3. Boki LGA - Wula Ekumpuo, Okwabang, Agba Osokom and Katchuan Irruan, 

4. Etung LGA - Nsofang, Ajassor and Abia

5. Abi LGA - Adadama, Usumutong, Imabana I and II, EkurekuII

6. Ikom LGA - Abanyom Ward, Nta - Nselle Ward, Ofutop Ward 2, Ikom Urban Ward 2.

These lights would enhance security and improve the micro economy of the communities, considering the importance of light to human and societal development. The solar street lights would, to a great extent, curb many nefarious acts during night hours, thereby contributing to the security measures in the area.

 

Road Construction:

In a bold demonstration of purposeful leadership and unwavering commitment to grassroots development, Senator Eteng Jonah Williams, has embarked on the construction of key rural access roads across his Senatorial district connecting hard-to-reach communities, boost local economies, and improve the standard of living for his constituents. Some of the latest road projects include:

1. Construction of 2km Mkpani Ring Road – Ongoing 

2. Construction of Lebang - Lokpoi Road – Ongoing 

3. Facilitated the construction of the Ebom–Ndibe Bridge(Second interstate bridge connecting Cross River State and Ebonyi State)

4. Grading of Agba 1 & Agba 2 Road in Boki LGA – Awarded

5. Grading of Iyamoyong – Okumuruktet – Iyamitet Road in Obubra LGA - Awarded

 

Empowerment Grants/Vocational Trainings

Through his comprehensive and people-centered empowerment initiative, in two years, Senator Eteng Williams have disbursed over ₦159 million in grants, training support, and startup tools—making a tangible difference in the lives of farmers, traders, students, and vulnerable groups across Cross River Central Senatorial District.

Empowerment Grants Breakdown:

• ₦55 Million in Economic Grants: 550 individuals, including students, market women, and small-scale farmers, received ₦100,000 each to boost local businesses and alleviate financial strain.

• ₦22 Million in Agro Grants: 180 constituents were supported with funds and starter packs to help them establish and grow agribusiness ventures, strengthening food production and rural livelihoods.

• ₦12 Million for Anti-Child Trafficking Training: 120 participants who attended sensitization workshops on child trafficking received training allowances, promoting awareness and advocacy against human trafficking in vulnerable communities.

• ₦2.4 Million for Poultry & Livestock Empowerment: 80 beneficiaries were equipped with 50-day-old chicks, feed, and essential farming tools—laying the foundation for sustainable income through livestock production.

• ₦50 Million in Presidential Grants: As part of federal economic relief efforts, Senator Williams facilitated disbursement to 1,200 individuals, each receiving ₦50,000 to support household stability amidst inflation and job losses.

• ₦18 Million for Vocational Training Support: 600 youths and women completed skills acquisition programs and were awarded startup grants, empowering them to launch small businesses in areas such as tailoring, ICT, catering, and more

 

Entrepreneurship Training and SME's Support: In a bid to support economic growth and empower local entrepreneurs, constituents and small business owners from all 66 wards of the Cross River Central Senatorial District were nominated to participate in the MEDA/BOI training program.

Foreign Scholarship:

As part of his commitment in empowering our youths with quality education and international exposure. Senator EtengWilliams has facilitated foreign scholarship for 12 beneficiaries from Central Senatorial District of Cross River State. The full scholarship, valued at over €40,000 each, covers tuition fees, accommodation, and living expenses for the entire duration of their studies.

Four scholars are pursuing Ph.D. degrees in the UK and Scotland, while eight are pursuing Master's degrees at prestigious universities in the UK, Germany, France, and Malaysia.

Local Scholarships:

The Law school grant for students across Cross River Central Senatorial District has empowered 60 law graduate in two years.

Beneficiaries received N200,000 – N250,000 each across Law School campuses in the country. 

In-country Scholarship for Post-Graduate Students

About 50 students pursuing post-graduate studies (Masters and Ph.D) in Nigerian Universities have been captured to receive full scholarship grants worth over N2 Million Naira each per session.

Agricultural Intervention:

In a bid to boost agricultural productivity and achieve food security, Senator Eteng Williams Distributed 1200 bags of NPK and Urea Fertilizers to support rural farmers across the 66 wards of the Cross River Central Senatorial District.

Medical Outreach\Intervention:

The first phase of Senator Eteng Williams FREE Medical Outreach recorded 10,000 beneficiaries in 6 days and 7 different locations.

In addition, 235 free surgeries were recorded, and deworming of 1028 children across the six Local Government Areas in Cross River Central Senatorial District. 

Similarly, Senator Eteng Williams paid unscheduled visits to some major medical facilities across Cross River Central Senatorial District, in the spirit of the Easter celebrations where he cleared medical bills of patients in critical conditions, newborns and patients who had been treated but awaiting discharge due to lack of funds. 

Plans have been concluded to sign up 1,200 constituents into the State Health Insurance Scheme.

Educational Interventions:

In the provision of educational infrastructure, Senator EtengWilliams has facilitated the

construction of a 3-classroom block in Aduma Primary School, Mkpani at 85% completion.

He has also donated instructional materials such as Notebooks, School bags, Calculators, Mathematical sets, Writing Items, and others to over 50 public schools in Cross River Central Senatorial District.

Sports Development:

As a lover of sports, Distinguished Senator Eteng Williams sponsored the Sweet Prince Otu Cup for pupils in over 40 secondary schools across the state to boast grassroots football and to support the Senator Otu-led administration in sports development. 

Senator Eteng Williams also sponsored the Yakurr Unity Cup in 2024 with all the 13 council wards participating.

Community Intervention:

This underscores Senator Eteng Williams strong grassroots connection and his relentless pursuit of progress and better living standards of the people of Cross River Central Senatorial District, some of the interventions include;

Construction of six (6) modern toilets facility to Ikom Police Division – Completed 

Donation of N10m Naira to Ekpache-Nkome community in Ikom Urban ward

In conclusion, there is no doubt that Senator Eteng Williams is at forefront of highly performing first timers of the 10th Senate. He has been identified in the red chambers as a legislative asset worthy of preservation. His ability to maintain seamless relationships with key stakeholders, leverage his institutional memory, and demonstrate humility and openness, drive development initiatives, and serve his constituents effectively has made him a respected leader in the Central Senatorial District.

At a relatively young age, Senator Ekpenyong has demonstrated remarkable energy and dedication to public service. His background as a seasoned educationist cum administrator and his tenure as Commissioner for Finance in Cross River State, equipped him with the expertise and vision necessary to drive meaningful development. 

Today, sitting as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), he has been instrumental in shaping policies that benefit the region and the country at large.

Cross River State House of Assembly Saga: Hon. Cyril Omini's Many Unpardonable Sins

Yesterday, the Cross River State cyberspace was awash with information suggesting that the Honourable Member Representing Yakurr 1 State Constituency, Hon. Cyril Omini, has been unceremoniously "ousted" as Chairman, Finance and Appropriation Committee; while such development is not alien to the modus operandi of legislative business, it does appear that the removal of Hon. Cyril Omini as Committee Chairman, ruffled not a few feathers, especially amongst young people in the State.

Whereas, it is within the constitutional prerogative of the Speaker to reshuffle the membership and headship of committees in the house, whenever it is imperative to do so, the removal of Cyril Omini has continued to generate uproar and suspicion, especially given the fact that the reasons adduced for his removal, appear to have defile all logical reasoning. The Speaker was quoted to have removed the honourable member on grounds of gross misconduct and absenteeism–quite ambiguous a claim, if you ask me. What exactly is this misconduct that has made the speaker use a sledgehammer? What could be so unpardonable a sin that would warrant such a draconic measure? These and many more are the unanswered questions on the lips of many. 

Anyone can choose to believe anything, but one thing has remained undisputed about Hon. Cyril Omini: he is one of the very best and most consistent–in service delivery– Assembly members alive today; hence, not out of place to assume that Hon. Cyril Omini, by his stellar performance, must have invited the lizards to a feast by carrying an insect infested firewood. What other sin can be more unpardonable than seeing an "ordinary" House of Assembly member outperforming all his colleagues put together? What else can be more unpardonable than seeing a fellow Assembly member facilitate the building of roads in his Constituency, construction of Civic Centers, massive financial support and grants for Small and Medium Enterprises, Payment of School fees for Law School Students, Jamb Registrations, Donation of Cars and Motorcycles to Constituents, Provision of Boreholes, Payment of Medical bills and facilitating Medical Outreach for Constituents. What else can be so unpardonable than fulfilling your promise to your Constituents, in an assembly where other members seem to have forgotten the roads to their Village? 

While the aforementioned sins are "unpardonable" it is important to stress that the removal of Hon. Cyril Omini appears to have sent a bad signal, as Cross Riverians– especially young people–believe that he is being victimized for daring to be different. I honestly do hope that this has nothing to do with 2027 election or the botched impeachment saga that greeted the assembly last year. A case of the Honourable Speaker trying to take his own pound of flesh. More worrisome is the fact that while Hon. Cyril Omini appears to be in support of Senator Eteng Jones return to the Senate, the speaker is alleged to be more amenable to Oden Ewa's aspiration to be Senator. 

While Politics is a game of thrones and wits, I honestly think that this infighting and cold war, would rather do more harm than good to the government even as we go into the 2027 election. I call on His Excellency, the Governor, to please intervene and restore normalcy to the house, as we cannot afford to have our assembly members on dagger-drawn against one another. I think that assembly members like CY should be encouraged to do more, rather than being victimized. What else is the season of sweetness without assembly members like CY complimenting the good works of the Governor? Imagine if we can have someone like CY in each of the 18 LGAs, I am cocksure that the fragrance of this season of sweetness will spread faster to all the nooks and crannies of the state. We must therefore, as a state, stop the killing of our own prophets–apologies to Bob Marley.

"Days of the Jackals: A Clarion Call to the Electorates of Cross River North

OBUDU — As the political drums begin their thunderous roll towards the 2027 general elections, I, Paul Udayi, find it both a solemn duty and a sacred obligation to speak to my compatriots of Cross River North. We stand once again at the crossroads of destiny, and it is incumbent upon us to rouse ourselves from slumber and face the realities that have long plagued our polity.

We are witnessing what can only be termed the days of the jackals—a season wherein political scavengers, emboldened by years of unmerited entrenchment, roam the landscape with a grotesque sense of entitlement. These political mandarins, having ensconced themselves in the echelons of power for what seems an interminable era, now parade themselves with the hauteur of demi-gods, believing that political office is their birthright and the masses mere serfs at their beck and call.

This lamentable reality must now be met with righteous indignation. We must summon these self-anointed barons to the court of public accountability. The era of political handouts—those paltry alms tossed to the masses with a sneer of condescension—is over. No longer shall we accept the psychological abuse wherein the legitimate expectations of good governance are portrayed as rare favours, dispensed only to the politically loyal or the spiritually broken.

The time has come for a new ethos: henceforth, anyone—especially those seasoned veterans who have fed fat on the commonwealth—aspiring to any office must render a full, detailed, and verifiable account of their stewardship. They must, with unerring precision and incontestable evidence, disclose the quality and quantity of their contributions to the common good. Flowery rhetoric, vague promises, and empty platitudes will no longer suffice to beguile a discerning populace.

I solemnly admonish every citizen: be not seduced by the ephemeral trinkets and tokens that politicians hurl like crumbs before hungry subjects. These so-called "gifts" are nothing but Greek wooden horses, laced with treachery, designed to breach the citadel of our collective wisdom—much like the doomed city of Troy. Such blandishments are a calculated insult to our sensibilities and a means to enthrone the giver as a demi-god, while the people are reduced to vassals.

At this critical juncture, we must rise as sentinels of our own destiny. We must be wiser, more vigilant, and unyieldingly proactive. We must reject the beguiling wiles of seasoned deceivers who come cloaked in ephemeral generosity yet bear no record of genuine service. Let us sharpen our discernment, fortify our collective resolve, and at the appointed hour, use the sacred ballot box as an altar of justice, where betrayal is punished and true stewardship rewarded.

Let it be known far and wide: the days when politicians bestride our land like colossi, unchallenged and unrepentant, are drawing swiftly to a close. A new dawn beckons—a season wherein only those who can account for every iota of their stewardship with integrity and transparency shall be deemed worthy of the people's trust.

The jackals may roam for a season, but the reckoning is at hand.

Revolutionizing Healthcare: Federal Medical Centre, Ugep

A milestone in the legislative stride of Senator Eteng Williams is the successful passage of the first reading of the Federal Medical Centres Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024 (SB 525), which seeks to establish the Federal Medical Centre in Ugep. This institution will eliminate the burden of long-distance travel for tertiary medical care, bringing state-of-the-art healthcare closer to the people of Cross River Central.

Beyond policy, his direct interventions in healthcare have impacted over 10,000 constituents through free medical outreach, which included 235 free surgeries and 1,028 dewormed children, reaffirming his commitment to quality healthcare.

Sports Development : Sponsorship of the Sweet Prince Otu Cup and the Yakurr Unity Cup 2024, uniting communities, fostering peace, and showcasing local talent, with over 200 secondary school teams participating.

Community Support : Distribution of 2,400 bags of rice during the Yuletide season and financial assistance to persons with disabilities.

ONE YEAR IN OFFICE: 

THE JOURNEY SO FAR. 

One year ago, precisely on the 5th Of March, 2024; I was graciously appointed by His Excellency, Senator (Prince) Bassey Edet Otu, to serve as Special Assistant, Student Affairs, under the People's First administration; and to commemorate this milestone, I held a special thanksgiving service on Sunday, March 2, 2025. 

I firmly believe that every good and perfect gift comes from God as I took out time to express my deepest gratitude to the Almighty for His protection, grace, divine guidance, and the gift of remarkable individuals who have supported me throughout my leadership journey. 

As I reflect on the past year, I am inspired by the goodwill and support of numerous individuals who have enabled me to excel in my role. I extend my heartfelt appreciation to His Excellency, Sen. (Prince) Governor Bassey Otu  and his dear wife, Her Excellency, Bishop Eyoanwan Bassey Otu, for the opportunity to serve under the People's First administration. I'm particularly grateful for the mentorship I've received from His Excellency over the past 14 years. 

I also wish to express my sincere gratitude to Hon Emmanuel Ironbar  Chief of Staff to the Governor, for his unwavering support, which dates back to my days as a student leader at the University of Calabar. His support, along with that of his wife Dr Virginia Emmanuel  has been invaluable. Additionally, I thank Dr. Barr Ekpenyong Akiba , Special Adviser on General Duties to the Governor, for his remarkable support and guidance all through this years. 

Furthermore, I appreciate the support of the Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, Secretary to the State Government, Prof Anthony Owan Enoh, Hon. I am also immensely grateful for the partnerships with organizations such as Nugi Group, Cross Riverians in the Diaspora Organization (CRID), JB Farms, YALI Network Cross River Hub, Negroid Haven, among others. 

Over the past year, we have achieved significant milestones, driven by His Excellency the Governor's unwavering commitment to creating a Cross River State where opportunities are accessible to all, regardless of background or socio-economic status. A few of these notable successes within the student community and beyond, includes: 

- Facilitation of full scholarships for 13 students through the Sir AA Odere Foundation.

- Securing internationally funded opportunities for 4 Cross Riverians. 

- Hosting the first ever edition of the Cross River Student Leaders Summit.

- Organizing the first edition of the Cross River Student Entrepreneurship Employability and Mentorship Summit (CR-SEEMS 2024) and a host of other programs in line with His Excellency's deep vision for our dear state. 

Our proposed multidimensional model aims to empower over 6,000 students by 2027, enabling them to become independent while contributing to community development. We have engaged in various national and international collaborations, representing His Excellency the Governor, and fostering partnerships with embassies and numerous organizations to benefit our students. 

Looking ahead, we have several exciting initiatives already planned and ready for execution, some of which are: 

- Launching free JAMB/WAEC tutorials in strategic locations across the state. 

- Hosting the second edition of the Cross River Student Leaders Summit. 

- Organizing the second edition of the Cross River Entrepreneurship employability and mentorship summit (CR-SEEMS)

- Implementing the Campus CEO program in partnership with MEDA across the various campuses in Cross River State. 

- Launching the Campus Talent Program and other programs in line with our core mandate. 

I remain committed to serving our dear state with dignity and purpose. My passion is driven by my faith in God and His Excellency's commitment to the good of our dear state. We are confident that with such sterling performance, in 2027 general elections they shall be no vacancy and the SWEETNESS WILL  CONTINUE.

"Na small small juju and Gossips dey Keep us for ground"- Ezama Laments C'River's National Backwardness

A former Special Adviser on Education to the Cross River State Government, Castro Ezama, has expressed deep concerns over the state's political disunity and its impact on securing federal attention and resources.

In a widely circulated social media post, Ezama speaks on the recent visit of Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, alongside Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Governor Udom Emmanuel to the Presidential Villa, where they jointly presented the state's Arise Agenda to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Ezama noted that despite Akwa Ibom being a People's Democratic Party (PDP) stronghold, its leaders have set aside political differences to promote the state's development at the national level. He commended the maturity displayed by Senate President Akpabio and his successor, Udom Emmanuel, stating that their ability to collaborate serves as a lesson in unity.

However, he lamented that Cross River State has yet to demonstrate similar cohesion, pointing out that rather than fostering collective progress, the political landscape is dominated by division and in-fighting.

"Our state is the headquarters of illicit gossips and hatred," Ezama wrote. "Small small juju here and there is not even helping matters. Dress well in Calabar and walk past, dem go use mouth destroy you. How do you expect our state to pierce the center and get our due with this growing hatred one for another?"

He further observed that key political figures from Cross River who have access to influential federal power brokers appear reluctant to facilitate opportunities for more Crossriverians. He cited Senate President Akpabio's relationship with prominent Cross River politicians such as Rt. Hon. Orok Duke and Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, who are currently engaged in a political battle over the state's 2027 Senate race.

Ezama opined that fears of political sabotage have made it difficult for leaders to build a united front that could advance Cross River's interests in Abuja. He drew parallels with the strained relationship between Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and his perceived opponents in Cross River, as well as past incidents involving Chief Akin Ricketts and his association with former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi.

The former IPAC chairman argued that Cross Riverians must prioritize unity over personal rivalries if the state is to gain meaningful federal recognition and benefits. He called for a movement to reposition the state at the center of national politics.

"If our unity level is up to 50 percent, then we can try something good for ourselves; else, we will continue to write," he warned.

His call for action has sparked discussions across social and political circles, with many echoing the need for a collective push toward securing Cross River's rightful place at the federal level.

Donald Trump’s Election Victory – What His Campaign Rhetoric Means for Gender Equality

CALABAR - The emergence of Donald Trump as the 47^th President of the United States of America may have brought joy and elation to many, but his returns to the center of America’s political stage also mean so much to no just Americans but the world at large. His messages, campaign promises, and the legacy of his previous administration gives a picture of what his victory could mean for gender equality. Across the world, we all witnessed and watched with amazement his rise, often baffled by his bold statements and blunt style. Truth be told for a majority of us as Africans, his rhetoric resonates as both a symbol of power and as a catalyst for reflection on gender issues back home. In this feature, we look at Trump’s campaign messaging, past actions, and his promises to the America People and the rest of the world to understand their potential effects on gender equality.

Campaign Rhetoric and Controversial Remarks

Throughout his career, Trump has faced significant scrutiny over his language toward women. His 2016 campaign was marked by controversial comments that many felt demeaned women and reinforced negative stereotypes. Statements that became infamous, like the leaked 2005 audio recording of Trump discussing women in vulgar terms, brought gender issues into the limelight. His frequent social media spats with female political figures, such as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and prominent journalists, have also added fuel to the perception that he often engages in gender-insensitive rhetoric.

 

These behaviors aren’t merely controversies; they carry implications. The words of a leader, especially one as visible as Trump, shape public discourse and can influence the way society views gender. When leaders make statements that seemingly devalue or mock women, these attitudes may trickle down, affecting workplace dynamics, public behavior, and even policy priorities. Critics fear that such rhetoric could embolden attitudes that tolerate gender-based disrespect or dismiss gender equality as an important social goal.

 

Legacy of the First Term: Policies and Gender Equality

During his first term, Trump’s administration adopted several policies that many felt rolled back gains in gender equality. Key issues, such as reproductive rights, workplace equality, and gender-based violence, were subject to shifts in policy that revealed the administration’s conservative leanings. His administration:

Reproductive Rights: The Trump administration placed restrictions on federal funding for organizations that provide or discuss abortion, both domestically and internationally. Known as the "Global Gag Rule," this policy restricted aid to organizations that supported family planning, particularly in Africa, where U.S.-funded programs play a significant role in women’s health. Such moves raised concerns that women’s reproductive rights were being undermined, potentially limiting access to critical healthcare services.

Title IX Reforms: Under Trump, the Department of Education, led by Betsy DeVos, revised Title IX policies, the U.S. federal law that addresses sexual harassment and discrimination in educational institutions. The revisions were seen as making it harder for survivors of gender-based violence to seek justice, which sparked backlash from advocacy groups who argued that the changes favored accused individuals over victims.

Equal Pay and Workplace Equality: Trump’s administration also faced criticism for a lack of significant progress on closing the gender pay gap. Although he signed an executive order to promote women in STEM careers, many felt that broader economic policies under his administration, like tax reforms favoring corporations, did little to tackle gender inequality in the workplace or improve low wages, which disproportionately impact women.

Campaign Promises for the Future

Now, in his return bid, Trump has continued to target traditional themes of nationalism and economic revival, focusing on "Making America Great Again" and putting American interests first. However, gender equality has not featured prominently in his campaign promises, and there is a notable absence of specific pledges directed at improving women’s rights or addressing issues like workplace discrimination and gender-based violence.

Instead, Trump has centered his campaign on issues like border control, law and order, and economic growth. His emphasis on a strong military and national security may appeal to a section of voters, but without targeted commitments to gender equality, concerns persist over whether these broader policies will address or overlook gender-specific issues.

While Trump has made gestures towards empowering women, particularly in business and technology, his approach generally favors market-driven solutions over government intervention. This may limit the scope of progress on gender equity, as issues such as pay inequality and support for working mothers often require legislative and social policy changes, not just private sector involvement.

Implications for Gender Equality in the U.S. and Beyond

Trump’s rhetoric and policy direction create a complex picture for gender equality. On the one hand, his vocal conservative base may feel emboldened by his stance, potentially challenging gender equality initiatives that they view as undermining traditional values. On the other hand, his presidency could also inspire renewed activism from groups advocating for women’s rights, both in the U.S. and abroad, who see his rhetoric as a rallying call to protect hard-won gender equality gains.

 

In African countries, where leaders and citizens closely observe global politics, Trump's approach to gender issues raises questions. Could his administration’s stance impact funding for health and education programs that support African women? How might his influence shape cultural attitudes toward women’s roles in leadership and society? For those who rely on U.S.-backed initiatives promoting gender equality, a shift in policy priorities could mean fewer resources, which could negatively impact efforts to support women and girls.

 

Conclusion: A Time for Reflection and Action

Donald Trump’s rhetoric and policies present challenges and lessons for those working toward gender equality worldwide. His language and conservative policy focus reveal a leadership style that resonates with some while distancing others, stressing the ongoing global debate over gender and power. As Africans and Development Workers, lets observe, learn, and decide which aspects of this global discourse to adopt or resist. The Trump phenomenon emphasizes that the journey toward gender equality requires resilience and commitment, even in the face of resistance from the highest levels.

As we watch Trump’s new campaign/policies unfold, it serves as a reminder that gender equality is not just a women’s issue; it is a societal goal that benefits all. In Africa, as we strive for more inclusive and fair societies, we are reminded that leadership should inspire unity, progress, and respect for all genders. It’s a time for Development workers, especially those working on gender related and reproductive health right issues to re-strategies, think out of the box and come up with new templates, strategies and approaches.  It is true that Trump's approach may not resonate with everyone of us, but no doubt, it offers us a valuable opportunity to reflect on what leadership should look like in a world committed to equality.

GLOBAL WARMING: Governor Bassey Otu Signs Bill To Establish Climate and Green Economy Commission

The Cross River State governor, Sen Bassey Edet Otu has signed into law, a bill to establish a Climate and Green Economy Commission.

The event which took place at the Dan Archibong lodge, the temporary office of the governor in Calabar, the state capital, was witnessed by top government officials including the state Deputy Governor, secretary to the State government as well as the leadership of the State house of assembly. 

The governor who said that the law was aimed at preserving the rich biodiversity of the state, maintained that it marked "another bold step by my administration to engender a sustainable environment through the protection of the rich and yet fragile ecosystem of Cross River State..

"For us in Cross River State, the environmental consciousness among the citizenry is simply our way of life. Almost all our actions are guided by the principle of "LIVING AT PEACE WITH NATURE". This consciousness had greatly contributed to the mitigation of natural catastrophes that our geographical zone is proned to. We have halted and reversed community based deforestation activities by adopting sustainable farming practices.

According to governor Otu, "the key element of the nature-positive strategy is the regeneration method, whereby we have undertaken the planting of millions of trees in our depleted forests. We have also adopted controlled-logging of wood in our rainforests. It is our considered opinion that when our forests and other biodiversity hotspots are restored and protected, carbon will be assimilated, biodiversity enriched and air purified for our wellbeing.

"The signing of the Climate and Green Economy Bill today is therefore a sign of our renewed drive towards the Nature-Positive Strategy (NPS). 

The Nature-Positive Strategy is a deliberate action of my administration to enhance the resilience of our forests by halting and reversing natural habitat loss; it is the foundation of our Green Economy, he emphasized. 

Speaking earlier, the speaker of the state house of assembly, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, appreciated the legislators for doing a great job by ensuring that relevant stakeholders were carried along in the cause of putting up the bill. He expressed satisfaction at the level of work done by members of the house, especially the house committee on environment, Hon. Ovat Agbor and members of his committee who worked tirelessly to ensure that a good job was done. 

Cross River State apart from hosting the largest rainforest in the country, has become the first sub-national to set up such an important commission, deliberately taking measures to address the issue of climate change.

Understanding Governor Bassey Otu 's People First Mantra And The Economic Importance Of The Bakassi Deep Seaport Port.

On May 29, 2023, when the current Governor  Bassey Edet Otu took over office as the fourth democratically elected governor of Cross River State in the current fourth republic, expectations were high and the yearnings of Cross Riverians were almost felt. 

Governor Bassey Otu arrived at the rostrum of leadership of the state with a burden of over 4.5 million Cross Riverians who at the time, had lost hope in public governance, it became pertinent for citizens to be reassured to have faith in public governance and importantly,,  the need for the self worth and value of  Cross Riverians to be raised. The governor understood the challenges and promptly came up with the now popular "People First" Mantra

The mantra meant that once again, citizens could have confidence in the government, it meant that government was ready to make the welfare and well-being of citizens a priority, it meant that the value and self worth of citizens will be considered in all decisions of government and above all, it meant that the governor was going to put the people first in all his consideration, including his programs and policies. Little wonder  why  during his inaugural speech, Governor Bassey Edet Otu had openly committed " Dear Cross Riverians, I commit to you and my God, to at all times, put you first in all my considerations " 

About a year and six months after his swearing-in, , the governor has proven that he is a man of his words. His programs and policies have so far shown that the people are his priority. For example, he came in to meet a backlog of unpaid gratuity of pensioners of over 10 years running into several billions of naira. Today, several of our pensioners are smiling to the bank to get their reward after many years of sacrifice and service to the state. 

In the area of infrastructure including the provision of basic amenities good roads, access to basic healthcare facilities, security of lives and properties etc, the governor has performed incredibly well. Only last year, the governor, through the State ministry of education,  facilitated the payment of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) for over 11,000 secondary school students of Cross River origin amounting to over  N400 million . If all these are not putting the People First, I wonder what it is. 

Recently, the governor was able to secure about $3.5 billion funding for the Bakassi Deep Seaport. It is important to emphasize that this is about the first funding facility that the African financial giant  AFREXIM bank would put out for a sub-national. What this means is that the integrity, policy and programs, including the obvious  financial prudence of governor Bassey Edet Otu has been tested, tried and proven to be genuine by one of the global financial financiers and advisors. 

The economic implications of this laudable initiative is that, the state will become a powerful player in the maritime  sub-sector of Nigeria with an open market in  the  southern -south and south east of Nigeria, Including mopping up the financial benefits around the entire maritime business in the Lake Chad basin, and the Gulf of Guinea. Apart from the main transaction of major key players in the maritime  sector, the massive value-chain, such business comes with, cannot be quantified. The completion and eventual take-off of business activities at the Bakassi Deep Seaport will see the emergence of several other businesses like, fabrication industries, boat maintenance  and repair services, supply of all kind of goods and services etc

Governor Bassey Otu is no doubt, a visionary leader, who is indeed determined to put the people first in all that he does. One can only pray that his visions and policies will be massively supported by the government at the center in order to bring about the much needed prosperity of citizens.

N500m Stabilization Fund: The Lie From Abuja And The Silence From Calabar

Barely forty days to the end of former Cross River Governor, Senator Liyel Imoke's administration, in a petition dated April 16, 2015, Cross River lawyer and former presidential aide, Okoi Obono Obla, petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC, to investigate the expenditure of allocations to the 18 local governments in Cross River State from the federation account, under Imoke's watch.

The petitioner, Obono Obla, amongst other demands, asked the EFCC to investigate the expenditure of the sum of N15 Billion by Governor Liyel Imoke approved by the Federal Government of Nigeria to ameliorate the economic losses suffered by Cross River State as a result of the judgment of the Supreme Court that led to the loss of 76 Oil Wells to Akwa Ibom State by Cross River State and the transfer of the sovereignty of Bakassi Peninsula to the Republic of Cameroon.

And to also investigate the expenditure of a monthly augmentation of N500m (Five Hundred Million Naira) from the Stabilization Fund paid to the Cross River State Government in 2013 by the Federal Government of Nigeria for two years at the first instance.

Obla's request was sequel to information disclosed in a leaked letter dated April 12, 2014 which the RMAFC sent to Imoke, requesting to visit the State to monitor and evaluate what the Bakassi intervention fund had achieved. The letter also disclosed that a lump sum of fifteen billion naira was released from the Stabilization Fund by RMAFC, to the Cross River State government, plus five hundred million naira monthly augmentation for two years, amounting to 6 billion naira, which was also paid in bulk in June 2013. In addition to another N400million Naira every month. (The letter is attached here.)

Then in May 2017, a former Chairman of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), Aliyu Mohammed, during a visit to the State to see Governor Ayade, said as part of efforts to assuage the pains caused by the loss of Bakassi, about N38billion has been paid as special allocation to the State by the Federal Government over a period of 11 years, as compensation.

CrossRiverWatch has been tracking this development since 2012. So when the incumbent Chairman of RMAFC, Mr. A.M. Shehu, mentioned $500million, it conflicted with all I have heard previously about this matter and created doubts in my mind. While it is clear that A.M. Shehu, told a lie about the currency they send to Cross River State and replaced Naira with Dollars, it is even more worrisome that Calabar is silent on the whereabouts of the money. Calabar is more anxious to tell us it wasn't Dollars but reluctant to tell us what the Naira they accept they have been collecting has been utilized on.

After joining their political party, Obono Obla, abandoned the petitions he wrote against Governor Imoke and the press statement from Governor Ayade's office on Friday, though conceded that they get N500m every month, still didn't not tell the public what exactly the money has been used for. That exactly should be our bone of contention. It is our right to know and we need to know and we actually need to know NOW!

Meanwhile, I was abruptly corrected yesterday during an interview with a relevant source. A top source in RMAFC, who pleaded anonymity, told yours sincerely that, contrary to what people are saying, the Bakassi augmentation fund is meant for the entire Cross River State and not one LGA alone.

The source said: "Before Cross River lost the Bakassi oil wells to Akwa Ibom, money for the 76 oil wells was not sent to Bakassi LGA alone. It was part of the Cross River State share from FAAC for the development of all the LGAs. Bakassi LGA has its own share from the center like the other 17 LGAs.
