Wike’s Camp Suffers Setback as Court Dismisses Samuel Anyanwu’s Suit Against PDP

ABUJA— The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has dismissed the suit filed by Senator Samuel Anyanwu challenging his removal as the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), dealing a major setback to the camp of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, widely believed to have backed the embattled party chieftain.

Justice M. G. Umar, in a ruling delivered on Tuesday, struck out Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/254/2025 , Sen. Samuel Anyanwu v. INEC & Ors, in which the former PDP National Secretary sought judicial intervention to retain his position and restrain the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising or acting on any PDP correspondence not bearing his signature.

Anyanwu had approached the court following internal party disputes and earlier judicial pronouncements, arguing that his tenure as National Secretary subsisted until December 2025. He also relied on a previous Supreme Court decision which held that the leadership of political parties is largely an internal affair.

However, Justice Umar dismissed the suit on multiple grounds. The court reaffirmed the long-standing position of Nigerian courts that issues bordering on the internal administration and leadership of political parties are non-justiciable and fall outside the jurisdiction of the court.

The judge further held that the suit amounted to an abuse of court process, noting that several cases on the same subject matter were already pending or had been determined at different levels of the judiciary, including the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.

In addition, the court ruled that Anyanwu's tenure had expired by effluxion of time, having been elected as PDP National Secretary in 2021. The court held that he could not lawfully continue to lay claim to the office beyond the tenure for which he was elected.

The ruling effectively nullifies Anyanwu's attempt to use the courts to sustain his hold on the PDP national secretariat and is seen as a significant blow to the political influence of the Wike-aligned faction within the party.

Although Anyanwu has persistently maintained that his term remained valid, he was among the high-ranking PDP members expelled from the party during the Ibadan National Convention held in November 2025.

The PDP currently recognises the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC), which emerged from the Ibadan convention and has since been accepted by the party as its legitimate national leadership.

Political observers say the judgment further strengthens the authority of the PDP's current leadership while narrowing the legal and political options available to dissenting factions within the party.

UJIBHADA: Ebokpo Begins Early Grassroots Mobilization for Otu in C'River

CALABAR — In a move aimed at consolidating support for the re-election of Governor Bassey Edet Otu in 2027, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Irrigation Development, Johnson Andiambey Ebokpo, KSM, has unveiled the UJIBHADA Progressives Movement, a socio-political support platform designed to mobilise grassroots backing for continuity of the current administration in Cross River State.

The unveiling ceremony, which drew political stakeholders, party faithful and community leaders from across the state, also featured the inauguration of ward, chapter and local government coordinators to drive the activities of the movement at the grassroots level. The structure, according to organisers, is intended to ensure early mobilisation and sustained engagement ahead of the next general elections.

Speaking at the event, Ebokpo, who serves as the Director-General of the movement, said UJIBHADA was formed to galvanise widespread support for Governor Otu's second-term bid, stressing that continuity would guarantee the consolidation of the administration's people-oriented policies and developmental programmes.

Represented by the Deputy Director-General of the movement, Solomon Ekam, Ebokpo explained that "UJIBHADA," a term symbolising prosperity and good fortune, reflects the positive socio-economic direction of the Otu-led government and the need to sustain its reform agenda beyond 2027.

Providing an overview of the organisation, the Director of Special Duties, Dr. Cletus Omono, JP, disclosed that the UJIBHADA Progressives Movement is a duly registered political support group with coordinators across the 18 local government areas of Cross River State, ensuring a broad and inclusive reach.

In his keynote address, former council chairman of Obubra LGA, Dr. Bassey Eric Tom, urged members of the movement to remain united, disciplined and strategic in their engagements, noting that effective grassroots mobilisation would be critical to achieving success in 2027.

Also speaking, elder statesman and seasoned politician, High Chief Julius Mbina, highlighted the electoral strength of Obubra Local Government Area, calling on stakeholders to harness the voting capacity of the area to attract increased development and political relevance.

Goodwill messages were delivered by several stakeholders, including Mrs. Charity Orokwu, as the event attracted a wide spectrum of politicians, traditional leaders and party supporters who pledged their commitment to the ideals of the movement.

The high point of the event was the presentation of an Award of Excellent Performance to Ebokpo by the Director-General of AJEMO (Johnson Andiambey Ebokpo Movement), Mr. Ekawo Cyprian Awah. Presenting the award, Awah said the recognition was in appreciation of the commissioner's notable achievements within a short period in office and his contributions to community and state development.

Observers say the emergence of the UJIBHADA Progressives Movement signals the commencement of early grassroots political realignment ahead of the 2027 governorship election, with continuity of the Otu administration now gaining organised support across the state.

"Don’t Fight My Battles” – Dansuki Warns Supporters Against Political Hostility

CALABAR — Former federal lawmaker and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Rt. Hon. Daniel Asuquo (popularly known as Dansuki), has cautioned his supporters against engaging in political hostility on his behalf, urging them to prioritise friendship, family ties and community cohesion over partisan battles.

Dansuki gave the warning on while hosting friends, associates and political allies from across party lines at his residence during a get-together in Calabar.

Addressing the gathering, the former member of Nigeria's Green Chambers at the National Assembly who Represented Akamkpa/Biase Federal Constituency stressed that political differences must not be allowed to destroy long-standing personal relationships built over decades.

"Don't take my fight though. Dey your dey, make I dey my dey. Don't fight for me," he told the audience. "Your brother is your brother. Your sister is your sister. What has joined us together is the friendship we have built over the years."

He noted that many friendships present at the gathering predated politics, some spanning more than 30 to 40 years, and described such bonds as stronger and more enduring than political affiliations.

Dansuki expressed concern that political loyalty had strained relationships among some of his supporters, warning against turning political disagreements into personal enmity.

"I notice that a lot of you are not talking to yourselves because you are supporting different causes. Don't carry my battle. Friendship is bigger than politics," he said.

"You are free to support whoever you want to support outside here, but don't let your affiliations destroy the bond we share here." He added. 

The grassroot politician also used the occasion to reaffirm his support for the administration of Governor Bassey Otu, dismissing speculations on social media about a rift between them.

"I believe in Prince Otu's government because it was the right thing to do," Dansuki stated. "People should not mix business with politics. Relationship is relationship."

While acknowledging the dynamic nature of politics, he urged party members to stop undermining one another, warning that growth cannot be achieved by running others down.

"People must not pull others down to grow. You only think you are going somewhere, but without a good foundation, you will not go far," he said.

Dansuki also encouraged cross-party tolerance, noting that the gathering included supporters from APC, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party, united by friendship rather than political alignment.

He thanked attendees for their continued support and pledged to maintain open relationships with friends and associates, regardless of political differences.

The event featured goodwill messages from party leaders and longtime associates, who praised Dansuki for sustaining relationships even while out of public office and pledged continued support for his political and personal endeavours.

When the Righteous Stay Away, Desperate Politicians Take Over, Says Akamkpa Chairman

CALABAR- The Chairman of Akamkpa Local Government Area, Hon. Chief Felix Akposi JSK, has warned that democracy becomes vulnerable when responsible and well-meaning citizens fail to participate in elections.

Chief Akposi issued the warning during the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) sensitisation Workshop held in Calabar, led by the SA Community Relations Hon. Chief Ada Charles and Community Relations Officers (CROs).

Speaking to community leaders, youths, and stakeholders, the council chairman said voter apathy is one of the biggest threats to credible elections, stressing that low turnout only empowers desperate politicians.
According to him, "When the righteous stay away, desperate politicians take over. If good people refuse to go and vote, you give room for those who want to manipulate the system. But when people come out in large numbers, nobody can hijack the process."

Chief Akposi encouraged eligible residents, especially young people and first-time voters, to seize the opportunity of the CVR exercise to register, update their details, and prepare for the forthcoming local government elections.

He commended the Governor's representatives for bringing the sensitisation campaign to the grassroots, describing it as a timely and strategic move to strengthen civic participation across the state.

The Akamkpa chairman also urged traditional rulers, community groups, and civil society organisations to support the mobilisation effort, saying the true will of the people can only prevail when citizens play their part.

Speaking earlier, Hon. Ada Charles said the Governor, Sen. Bassey Edet Otu, has given clear instructions for a more aggressive, community-focused mobilisation, especially in rural and hard-to-reach areas. She charged the CROs and ward officers to take the message beyond town halls and into streets, markets, farms, creeks and local settlements.

According to her, Cross River can no longer afford the low voter turnout that has been witnessed in previous elections.

"This is not the time for half commitment. His Excellency wants every eligible voter registered. Go back and mobilize your people. Make sure no community is left out," she said.

The INEC Public Affairs Officer, Mr Godwin Oki, gave a technical briefing on the CVR process, explaining the roles of registration officers, the structure of the exercise, transfer of voter cards, and provisions for persons living with disabilities. He encouraged communities to use the window of the CVR to update their details, correct errors, and register first-time voters.

Traditional rulers who spoke at the event praised the initiative but appealed that INEC bring registration points closer to the people, especially those living in riverine and difficult terrains, particularly in areas like Calabar South, Bakassi and other remote communities. Market women and youth representatives also pledged support, noting that increased civic participation will strengthen development at the grassroots.

CALABAR — In a rare display of transparency, accountability, and people-centered leadership, Hon. Augustine Edet, Councillor representing Ward 5 in Calabar Municipality, has rendered a comprehensive account of his one year in office, showcasing remarkable progress across key sectors of community development.

Guided by the People's First philosophy of His Excellency, Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu, and working in close partnership with the Mayor of Calabar Municipality, Rt. Hon. James Anam Okon, Hon. Edet has redefined grassroots representation through servant leadership, innovation, and inclusive governance.

At the heart of his performance is the Ward 5 Development Initiative (W5DI), a visionary, multi-sectoral plan focused on education, healthcare, infrastructure, empowerment, and environmental sustainability. This blueprint has become the foundation for the many tangible results Ward 5 residents now celebrate.

Education as a Cornerstone of Progress
As a representative of the people, Hon. Edet believes education is the bedrock of development in Ward 5. Within one year, he has facilitated the renovation of Ekorinim Primary School following a motion he sponsored in the Legislative Council and supported the near-completion of a new classroom block at Migrant Technical College, Ekorinim, executed by SUBEB and currently at 95% completion.

To tackle school dropouts and improve access to learning, he awarded over 34 scholarships to indigent pupils and students, distributed writing materials, and facilitated free JAMB registration for young school leavers under the Governor's Youth Empowerment Initiative.
He also sponsored motions to curb illegal trading activities within school premises, leading to Council interventions that protected the learning environment and secured school property.

Health and Community Well-being
Recognizing health as the foundation of community productivity, Hon. Edet sponsored motions for the renovation of the Ekorinim Health Centre, now billed for a total overhaul, and advocated for the rehabilitation of Diamond Health Centre to strengthen primary healthcare delivery.
Through his regular engagement with local health officers, he ensured consistent sanitation and maintenance of health facilities, interventions that have improved hygiene and access to essential medical services, especially for women and children.

Additionally, he provided direct financial and medication support to 15 residents to enable them access medical care, reflecting his compassionate and responsive leadership style.

Infrastructure Renewal and Market Development
Under his Ward 5 Development Initiative (W5DI), Hon. Edet prioritized the protection and development of public infrastructure. One of his most notable interventions was sponsoring a motion and petition that stopped illegal encroachment on the government-approved Ekorinim Model Market land, effectively safeguarding over 45,000 square meters of community property from private land grabbers.
He has also been at the forefront of advocacy for the construction of a modern Ekorinim Community Market, complete with standard stalls, drainage systems, solar lighting, public toilets, and waste disposal facilities.

Furthermore, he identified and recommended nine critical community roads for inclusion in the Municipality's development plan and has continued to engage authorities on the extension of streetlights to enhance safety and support nightlife businesses.

Environmental Sanitation and Peacebuilding
For twelve consecutive months, Hon. Edet has personally led the monthly environmental sanitation exercise across Ward 5, mobilizing residents, youth groups, and associations to participate actively in keeping the community clean.

His leadership extends beyond sanitation into peacebuilding and conflict resolution. He has mediated and resolved several youth-related disputes in Ekorinim, encouraged nonviolent grievance handling, and advocated for the establishment of vigilante groups and community policing to safeguard public facilities.
These actions have enhanced peace, safety, and civic discipline across Ward 5, making it one of the most stable wards within the Municipality.

Empowerment and Human Capital Development
True to his promise of inclusive representation, Hon. Edet has invested heavily in empowering his constituents. He has sponsored two youths for vocational training, one in driving and another in plumbing, to promote self-reliance and reduce unemployment.

He initiated a monthly widow-support scheme that provides stipends of ₦5,000 to several widows, extended small business grants to petty traders, and facilitated linkages for unemployed youths through the Agricultural Development Programme.
He also supported eight families with funeral assistance, demonstrating empathy and solidarity in times of loss.

Legislative Impact and Governance
Apart from giving his people visible representation, Hon. I Still Carry the Scars of Fighting for Cross River: Ayade Reflects on Political Battles and Sacrifices

CALABAR - Former Governor of Cross River State, Senator Ben Ayade, has said he still carries the scars of the political battles he fought to protect the sovereignty and strategic interests of the state. Ayade, who governed the state from 2015 to 2023, made the remark in Calabar while addressing journalists shortly after arriving to attend the wedding ceremony of Governor Bassey Otu's son.  

Reflecting on his decision to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2021, the former governor said his action was not driven by personal ambition but by a deep concern for the state's political and economic survival.

"As a leader, I saw what was coming. The crystal ball was clear. Nigeria was moving in a direction where Cross River risked being isolated if we didn't align with the center," Ayade said.
"So I made a conscious decision to lead the state into the APC, not because it was convenient, but because it was necessary. I knew the battle would be tough, and I carry the scars of that battle till today."

The former governor described his administration's decision to "socket to the centre" as a move born out of foresight and patriotism. According to him, aligning with the federal government was the only way to safeguard the state's interests and ensure its continued relevance in national politics.

"Cross River is a state that has suffered marginalization and economic deprivation for years. I believed that aligning with the federal government would help us access more opportunities. That decision came with consequences, political opposition, betrayal, and misrepresentation, but I have no regrets," he said.

Ayade, who also represented Cross River North in the Senate before becoming governor, said his loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC remains unwavering.

"I was one of the first to openly endorse President Tinubu, even before the APC primaries. I said it then, if Tinubu could fix Lagos, he could fix Nigeria. I believed in his capacity, and I still do," he said.
"President Tinubu knows me well; our relationship predates his presidency. He understands my intentions, and I believe he will surprise this country with his leadership."

Ayade's remarks, which came in a calm but reflective tone, appeared to convey both a sense of pride and pain, pride in his political foresight, and pain from the challenges he faced while trying to reposition Cross River politically and his subsequent loss of his second attempt to the senate during the 2023 general election. 

Political analysts interpret his comments as a subtle reminder of his contributions to strengthening the APC's hold in the South-South and a sign that the former governor still holds significant political capital in the region.

Addressing the Mammoth crowd that trooped out to receive him at the airport, the ex-governor, popularly known as the digital governor of Cross River State, said he was in the state not for political reasons but to attend the wedding of the governor's son. Ayade, describing the Governor as the leader of the party in the state, added that in due time, he will surely visit the state for politics.  

Observers also note that Ayade's appearance in Calabar and his engagement with journalists mark a quiet political reawakening, one that could signal a renewed involvement in the state's affairs ahead of future political realignments.
As he put it himself, "I carry the scars, but I also carry the satisfaction that I did what was right for my people."

Jarigbe: Exodus Looms as PDP Cross River North Stakeholders Declare Support for Tinubu, Gov Otu

CALABAR – A sweeping political shift is gathering momentum in Cross River North senatorial district, as influential stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have signaled plans to defect en masse to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in solidarity with Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe. 

Recall that on October 22, 2025 Sen. Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, Senator representing Cross River North, had on October 22, 2025 visited Aso Rock Villa to officially inform President Bola Tinubu of his defection to the ruling party.

Jarigbe followed it up with a visit to Cross River State chairman of APC, Alphonsus Eba, Esq, also notifying him of his defection and readiness to work with the leadership to reposition the party in the northern senatorial district.

And in continuation of his consultation, Jarigbe convened a strategic meeting in Abuja with top PDP figures from the zone to review the political landscape and chart a new direction. 

The move, if finalized, is expected to significantly alter the political equation in the northern senatorial zone ahead of the next election cycle.

Discussions at the meeting held at in ROCKVIEW Hotel, Abuja on Tuesday, reportedly centered on aligning with what participants described as the "progressive direction" of the state under Governor Bassey Otu and the reform-driven agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Speaking at the meeting, Jarigbe siad he moved over to APC to assist President Bola Tinubu in repositioning the country for greater heights.

He said defecting to the ruling party will not stop him from empowering the constituents and embarking on people-oriented projects and to alleviate the sufferings of the zone, assuring the stakeholders of regular consultations and better days are ahead.

Speaking, the Cross River State PDP chairman, Venatius Ikem, Esq, commended Sen. Jarigbe for the bold step taken so far, promising to go back to the State Executive members for further consultations on the next line of action.

In a united front, the stakeholders pledged their support for Governor Otu's administration and President Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda. 

They further disclosed their intention to officially join the APC alongside Senator Jarigbe after wider consultations, describing the anticipated mass defection as a strategic realignment to give Cross River North a stronger voice in both state and national politics.

Present at the meeting include Hon. Godwin Offiono, representing Ogoja/Yala Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Chief Austin Edibe; former Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Tom Ogar and Mike Aniah, Esq; Dr. DornKlamz Enamhe, Dr. Paul Ibiala, Hon Peter Ignodor and several other party stalwarts.

Political observers describe this development as a major blow to the PDP in Cross River, especially in the North where the party once held an unshaken grip.

 If the planned defection materialises, it could effectively collapse the PDP's political structure in the zone and strengthen the APC's dominance as Governor Otu continues to consolidate his influence across the state.

Why Governor Otu called for an Emergency Exco Meeting

Emergency Exco: Governor Otu Approves N2.1bn for Education, Road Works at Bakassi Deep Seaport

Calabar, Nigeria – Cross River State Governor, Senator (Prince) Bassey Edet Otu, on Thursday, October 2, 2025, presided over an emergency session of the State Executive Council (Exco) where far-reaching decisions on infrastructure and education were approved.

The 10th Exco meeting for the year, held at the Governor's Office Complex in Calabar, focused on urgent interventions, particularly the commencement of works at the Bakassi Deep Seaport site and the strengthening of the state's basic education system.

Top among the approvals was the emergency construction of a 1.7-kilometre access road and a one-hectare helipad at the Bakassi Deep Seaport location. The projects are expected to pave the way for the groundbreaking ceremony of the much-anticipated seaport, which Governor Otu has described as a "game changer" for Cross River's economy.

On education, the council approved the release of N2.1 billion for the printing of Training and Learning Materials (TLMs) under the Hope Programme, a World Bank-assisted initiative aimed at improving foundational literacy and numeracy for primary school pupils. The programme also includes the provision of teachers' guides and training for over 11,700 teachers across the state.

The Commissioner for Information, Dr. Erasmus Ekpang, explained that the intervention will not only strengthen learning outcomes in primary schools but also guarantee a reimbursement of more than N17.7 billion from the World Bank.

2027: Re-elected PDP Organizing Secretary, Francis Ekeng Unveils Agenda to End Party Disunity

CALABAR -The re-elected Organising Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State, Mr. Francis Ekeng, has pledged to deepen transparency and inclusiveness in the party’s processes. He outlined fresh strategies to strengthen internal cohesion and prevent disunity as the PDP prepares for the 2027 general elections.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with our correspondent, Ekeng said he was humbled by the confidence reposed in him by delegates, having secured 1,499 votes at the just-concluded state congress.

“This is a mandate I don’t take lightly. The organising secretary’s role is about fairness, balance, and inclusiveness. My duty is to ensure that all congresses, primaries, and mobilisations reflect the true spirit of democracy within our party,” he said.

Ekeng, who secured a second term during the party’s just-concluded state congress, said his mandate was both “humbling and an honour,” adding that it reflected the trust and confidence of party members in his leadership.

“This mandate is not just a recognition of my efforts, but also a testament to the trust and confidence the party members have in me to drive the party’s growth and success,” he stated.

With internal disagreements often threatening party stability, Ekeng stressed that one of his priorities would be fostering unity and averting avoidable litigations. He revealed plans to establish open communication channels, encourage dialogue to resolve grievances, and set up clear guidelines for party activities. Reflecting on his first tenure, Francis highlighted grassroots mobilisation, strong relationships with members, and adaptability as key lessons that will shape his second term.

“Internal democracy is the lifeblood of a political party. My duty is to ensure that our processes are transparent, inclusive, and credible,” he said.

Four-Year Agenda

Ekeng highlighted four key priorities for his second term:

Jarigbe Hails PDP Congress as Legitimate, Dismisses Doubts Over Process

CALABAR —Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe has described the just-concluded state congress of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River as both legitimate and credible, stressing that there was no alternative or parallel process to undermine its validity.

Speaking with journalists shortly after the exercise, Jarigbe said he was satisfied with the conduct of the congress, noting that it was calm, well-organised, and reflective of the will of party members.

"It is a legitimate congress. There is no alternative. This is the only congress," he stated firmly, when asked to clarify his use of the term "legitimate."

The lawmaker dismissed speculations that some groups within the party had sought to stop the congress, insisting that such voices were "incompetent to take that decision." Citing a popular legal maxim, he said: "In law, you cannot put something on nothing. That is disregarded."

When asked what would happen if any faction or group sought to challenge the outcome in court, Jarigbe maintained that the process was in strict alignment with the party's constitution and therefore unassailable.

"This congress holding today is predicated on NEC's decision. That's why we are holding this congress. I don't think there is any group that can go to court or challenge this in any way," he affirmed.

On whether the exercise will strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 general elections, the senator expressed optimism. "Very, very well. We chose very capable men and women to run the affairs of the party. So we are good to go," he said.

Jarigbe also addressed his past disagreements with the state chairman of the party, saying such issues had since been resolved amicably. "We had some disagreements, but we resolved it as a family. So we are good to go," he assured.

In his post-election remarks, the re-elected State Chairman, Venatius Ikem, said the congress offered the party an opportunity to rebuild and reposition itself.

The congress, which produced Venacious Ikem as chairman for a second term, is expected to reposition the PDP in Cross River State as the party prepares to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next electoral cycle.

PDP Crisis Deepens as Zonal Committee Confirms Postponement of C'River Congress

CALABAR — The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State deepened on Thursday following conflicting statements over the conduct of the state congress earlier scheduled for Saturday, 27th September 2025

While the South-South Zonal Caretaker Committee, backed by the party's National Working Committee (NWC), announced a postponement of the exercise, the State Deputy Secretary of the party, Mr. Joseph Ese, insisted the congress would still go ahead as planned.

Speaking in Calabar, during a meeting between Members of the South South Zonal Caretaker Committee and statekholders of the party in Cross River State, Chairman of the Caretaker Committee, Mr. Emmanuel Ogidi, confirmed that the NWC had taken the decision to shift the exercise in Cross River and Plateau States. He explained that the move was to ensure order and fairness in the process, stressing that "you don't do congress when there is confusion."

According to him, reports of a purported injunction against the exercise, allegedly obtained by one Nabuchadze, were false and only circulated on social media.

"Where did they get that injunction? They are seeing it online. The party is not run on social media, and the court does not run the party either. The Supreme Court has ruled that internal party affairs are governed by the constitution of the party once its rules are followed," Gidi stated.

He further clarified that the NWC is empowered by the PDP constitution to take decisions on behalf of the National Executive Committee (NEC), subject to later ratification. "The NWC implements the decisions of the party's highest organs and can also take decisions in their absence. These decisions are subsequently ratified by NEC or the convention," he said.

Ogidi also warned that any parallel congress organized outside the authority of the NWC would not be recognized, noting that materials for the exercise remain under the control of the recognized party leadership.

However, in a counter position, State Deputy Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Joseph Ese, dismissed claims that the congress had been suspended. He maintained that the convention would still hold, insisting that "a group of persons identified as coordinators and members of the ADC cannot dictate for our party."

Ese explained that issues that would have led to the suspension had already been resolved at the national level in Abuja, adding that internal crises in politics are often settled even at the "eleventh hour."

"It is too early to conclude that the congress will not hold because of issues that can be resolved even at the last moment," he argued.

The conflicting positions have left party faithful in Cross River State uncertain, with some members aligning with the zonal caretaker committee's directive while others insist on proceeding with the state exercise.

Political analysts warn that the disagreement is an indication of the fragile state of the PDP in Cross River, which has struggled to regain cohesion since losing the governorship to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2023.

As of press time, no new date has been fixed for the rescheduled congress by the NWC, while the state secretariat insists preparations for Saturday's exercise remain intact.

[Developing Story] Out’s Aide Accuses Former Fed. Lawmaker of Business Betrayal and Illegal Mining as Legal Battle Looms

CALABAR -A heated dispute has erupted between the Chairman of the Cross River State Anti-Illegal Mining Task Force, Prince Paul Effiong, and former federal lawmaker Hon. Daniel Asuquo, popularly known as DANSUKI, over allegations of business betrayal, illegal mining, and political intimidation.

What initially began as a verbal business agreement between two political allies has now snowballed into a full-blown public scandal, drawing in security agencies, federal regulators, and legal practitioners, with potential implications for the broader mining sector in Cross River State.

Prince Paul Effiong, who served as Director of Operations during Hon. Dan Asuquo's campaign for the Cross River South Senatorial Seat, disclosed in a recorded interview that after Dan's electoral loss, he encouraged him to venture into mining as an alternative livelihood.

"I personally facilitated the mining venture. I even filled the mining license forms with his wife at Zenith Bank for the registration process," Prince Paul stated. "We had a verbal agreement that I would receive 30% of whatever profit comes out of the mining business, while he and his wife take 70%."

According to him, despite securing contracts to supply iron ore to Lafarge and broker labor services and raking in over N280m, Dan allegedly reneged on their agreement and has not paid him a dime since operations commenced in 2023.

Beyond the personal grievances, Prince Paul, who now heads the state's Anti-Illegal Mining Task Force, alleges that the former Lawmaker who represented Akamkpa/Biase federal constituency in the green Chambers for 12 years, also engaged in illegal mining activities. He explained that DANSUKI has been mining outside the approved coordinates of his Small-Scale Mining Lease (SSML No. 55800) located in Akamkpa Local Government Area.

A letter from the Federal Mines Office dated April 7, 2025, confirmed that while Doveline Investment Limited, the company associated with Hon. Asuquo holds a valid mining lease, the coordinates observed during an inspection did not align with the approved boundaries. The Ministry directed the company to relocate its activities within legal limits or risk revocation.

 

Efforts to enforce the order were reportedly met with resistance. "He brought in armed soldiers to guard the illegal site," Prince Paul alleged. "This led to a standoff between our task force, civil defense, and his hired security."

Prince Paul informed that matters took a dramatic turn when He was arrested by operatives from the IGP Monitoring Unit allegedly on the orders of Hon. Asuquo. He was detained and charged with Obtaining by Trick (OBT), a criminal charge he strongly denies.

"He used his connections with the Chief of Staff to the President to bring in the IGP squad to intimidate me. I slept in a cell despite committing no offence. They started with a N5 million bail, which was later reduced to ₦1 million," Paul narrated.

He noted that his eventual release was facilitated by interventions from the Cross River State Government, including the State Security Adviser and the Commissioner of Police.

In response, Hon. Dan Asuquo, through his legal counsel, Dennis Tarhemba & Co., has issued a formal demand notice to Prince Paul, describing his public statements as "injurious falsehood and cyberbullying."

The letter, dated July 19, 2025, demands that Prince Paul retracts his statements within 48 hours via national dailies and pays ₦1 billion in damages or face legal action. The letter also confirmed that a petition had earlier been submitted to the Inspector General of Police over alleged unlawful interference with Dan's mining site and a claim of advance fee fraud.

State Government Maintains Neutrality

While Prince Paul currently serves under the Cross River State Government, a government official who is familiar with the situation but pleaded not to be disclosed because he hasn't been authorized to speak on the matter has affirmed that the Cross River Government has refused to shield Prince Paul from accountability.

"The situation is very delicate; these are two brothers affiliated with the governor. The governor has tried to play safe but wants justice served without favoritism. Answers are needed for these critical questions: Did Paul do the License for DANSUKI after collecting the acclaimed N10m? Was the site DANSUKI was mining legally his? That tells you the government is standing for due process, not personalities," he said.

Prince Paul revealed that Dan Asuquo is not the only one under scrutiny. "We've impounded several excavators from illegal miners and spent over ₦9 million to repatriate hundreds of illegal miners. The prison system cannot even accommodate them all," he said, urging The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and other security agencies to take up their role in monitoring mining activities in the state.

INEC Announces Voter Registration Schedule Ahead of 2025 Anambra Governorship Election

AWKA - The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the start of Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) in Anambra State, as preparations intensify for the 2025 Governorship election and scheduled by-elections.

Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Dr. Queen Elizabeth Agwu, disclosed this during a meeting with journalists held at INEC headquarters in Awka.

According to Dr. Agwu, the CVR exercise will begin on July 8 and run through July 17, 2025, across all 326 wards in the state. Registration will take place daily from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, excluding Mondays.

She made it clear that the current CVR is strictly for Governorship election slated for November 8, 2025. It will not apply to the Anambra South Senatorial and Onitsha North I State Constituency by-elections scheduled for August 16, 2025.

"This registration is not for the by-elections. It is strictly for the governorship poll. If you register during this window, you won't be eligible to vote in August. Those elections will use the current voter register," she explained.

The registration target individuals who have not registered before, those whose voter cards are missing or damaged and those needing changes to their information. She encouraged eligible residents to take advantage of the opportunity, noting that online platforms can be used for updates, but fresh registration must be done in person to capture biometric data.

Dr. Agwu warned against arriving before or after the designated time. "If you register before 9:00 AM or after 3:00 PM, the system will reject it. The server shuts down automatically and such entries won't be valid," she cautioned.

INEC, she added, has received 376 configured scanners for the exercise to work in line with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS). Training for adhoc personnel is scheduled for July 4 and July 5, 2025. She confirmed that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has been officially notified to mobilize corp members for the assignment.

Speaking on the by-elections, Dr. Agwu said arrangements are already in motion. Political parties are expected to conduct primaries and submit their candidates for the elections in eight local government areas. Only voters already on the register in those affected areas will be allowed to vote.

She also announced that after the by-elections, INEC will begin another round of CVR from August 17 to August 26, 2025. However, this phase will not apply to the November governorship election, but rather form part of the preparation for the 2027 general election.

On preparations for the main governorship poll, she explained that INEC has published the list of 16 political parties and their deputy candidates. The Commission has also met with traditional rulers, party executives and community stakeholders to provide election guidelines and expectations.

The REC further urged Ndi Anambra to participate actively and avoid voter apathy. "This is not just a process; it is your right. Registration is free, takes just a few minutes and everything is being handled electronically," she said.

She warned against paying anyone for registration, saying the process is fully funded by the federal government and does not require any payment from citizens.

"Don't wait till it is too late. This is your chance to be part of the decision. Get registered and get ready to vote," she stated.

The Standard Has Dropped: Otu’s Aide Berates Senator Eteng Jones Over Poor Representation

CALABAR - A storm of political discontent is brewing in Cross River Central Senatorial District as an aide to Governor Bassey Edet Otu has openly criticized the incumbent Senator Eteng Jonah Williams over what he described as a decline in quality representation, ineffective leadership, and underwhelming constituency impact.

In a fiery interaction with pressmen, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth Mobilization, Comrade Daniel Obo while reflecting on the youth inclusion drive under the Otu-led administration, took a hard stance on the senator's performance, declaring that "the standard has dropped" in the senatorial district and promising that the youth would no longer support ineffective representation in 2027.

"In the history of Cross River, Central has always produced senators of class. This is the first time our senator is being asked to sit down in the Senate chambers. They never did that to John Owan, not to Ndoma-Egba, not to Sandy Onor. This standard of representation is beneath us," he stated.

Dan Obo who is currently serving as the South-South Vice president, National Youth Council of Nigeria  decried the lack of legacy projects in Central Senatorial District. He pointed to several abandoned projects including the National Youth Centres in Ikom and Akparabong, and dilapidated health infrastructure, citing that "outside of streetlights and exercise books," there is little to show in terms of strategic development under the current senator.

Obo noted that while the Otu-led administration has created deliberate space for youth inclusion and empowerment across sectors, Senator Eteng has failed to maintain engagement with the very youth who rallied behind his 2023 senatorial bid.

"Less than two years into office, he called a youth meeting, all six key youth leaders boycotted it. These are the same people who worked for him, and they have nothing to show for it," he said.

He emphasized that the governor's youth mobilization architecture is not just tokenism but an intentional effort to prepare young people for leadership and policy impact.

"You can see it in the make-up of the House of Assembly, the State Executive Council, and key appointments. The governor is building a system that the youth can inherit, not by default, but by merit," he added.

Senator's Alleged Failures and Call for Merit-Based Ticket
Berating what he called a "sense of entitlement" to a second term, the aide argued that Senator Eteng has not earned a return ticket and insisted that the 2027 ticket should be based on performance, not political maneuvering.

"After two years in the Senate, the people should be agitating for your return, not you lobbying for an automatic ticket. Anyone lobbying for an automatic ticket after failing in performance is a disgrace," he said.

He pointed to other leaders across the state, including those from the South, whom he claimed have supported even aides of Senator Eteng in getting federal jobs, arguing that such gestures have elevated the standard of representation in those areas and should be emulated.

Central Youths Ready to Chart a New Course
The aide expressed support for the Commissioner for Special Duties, Oden Ewa, who he described as providing "visible leadership" in the senatorial district. Though Ewa has not publicly declared interest in the Senate race, Obo said youths from across the 66 wards of Central are already rallying around his leadership credentials.

"The Commissioner hasn't said he wants to run, but they're already jittery. We believe he has the vision to restore dignity to the Central seat. We want a senator who will bring industry, exploit our natural resources, and domesticate leadership, not just share pencils and textbooks," 

he asserted.

Responding to insinuations that he may be sponsored by any political heavyweight, the youth Leader declared:

"I don't have a principal outside of the governor. No one can point to me as their project. I'm loyal only to the vision of His Excellency, and that vision is clear performance over politics."

He concluded by reaffirming his loyalty to the current administration's agenda and reiterated that the youth in Central would not tolerate another round of ineffective leadership cloaked in party loyalty.

"In 2027, the mandate is for the people. And God willing, we will have our own."

Voice of Central Endorse Governor Otu and Odey, Declare "No Vacancy in Government House"

IKOM — In a major show of political solidarity and grassroots mobilisation, the Voice of Central, a leading socio-political support group in Cross River State, has officially endorsed Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu and  Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, for a second term in office as Governor and Deputy Governor of Cross River State, respectively.

The endorsement rally, which was held on Saturday, June 28, 2025, in Ikom Local Government Area, attracted a massive turnout of All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders, councillors, appointees, business leaders, and enthusiastic supporters from across the Central Senatorial District. The event began with a colourful procession from Federal Government College, Ikom. It climaxed at the Ikom Local Government Council field, where party faithful gathered to affirm their support for the Otu-Odey administration.

In his address, the Director-General of Voice of Central, Comrade Victor Bassey, spotlighted the significance of continuity in governance, stressing the need for all stakeholders to remain united and committed to ensuring victory for the APC in the 2027 general elections.

"We are here to reaffirm our support for a visionary leadership that has placed the needs of the people first. Governor Otu's 'People First' agenda has brought meaningful development to Central Cross River and beyond. This endorsement is not just ceremonial, it is a call to action," Bassey stated.

The formal motion to endorse Governor Otu and Deputy Governor Odey for a second term was moved by the Secretary of Voice of Central, Comrade Jones Ekwom, and seconded by the Woman Leader, Mrs. Esame Ogar. The motion was unanimously adopted by all in attendance.

Organisers described the endorsement as a "clear expression of satisfaction" with the current administration's achievements, including infrastructural development, improved healthcare delivery, education reforms, and renewed emphasis on agricultural development.

NANS Endorses Soludo Re-election Bid, Hails Landmark Projects

AKWA — With the 2025 Anambra governorship race drawing near, the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Olushola Oladoja, has thrown his weight behind the re-election of Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, citing massive infrastructural achievements as justification.

Oladoja, who is on a national campus tour to South Eastern states, made the endorsement when he visited key project sites in Awka, including the newly constructed Government House and the Solution Fun City. He was received by the Managing Director of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA), Dr. Ossy Onuko.

Speaking to Journalists after the tour, the NANS president described the new Government House as one of the best in Nigeria, praising its architectural design and functionality.

"This is a government house built with intention and vision. It is one of the most I have seen across the country. Governor Soludo has done exceptionally well," Oladoja said.

He lamented the lack of adequate media coverage of the governor's accomplishments, urging the Anambra government to work with the media.

"Soludo needs to invest more in media. Many outside Anambra are unaware of the scale of development going on here. The world deserves to see this," he noted.

At the Solution Fun City, a major recreational and tourism hub also visited, Oladoja was visibly impressed. He commended the transformation of what he said was once a swamp into a state-of-the-art facility.

"This project is proof of Soludo's foresight and determination. If I had a vote in Anambra, it would go to him. NANS is fully behind him for a second term," he declared.

On his part, ACTDA boss Dr. Ossy Onuko said the tour covered only a small portion of the administration's achievements. He revealed that Governor Soludo has awarded over 750 kilometres of road projects, out of which more than 450 kilometres have been completed and asphalted, including several federal road dualization projects.

"Soludo is not driven by politics but by purpose. He is a former Central Bank Governor and a globally respected economist who has consulted for over 20 international organisations. He returned home to serve," Onuko stated.

The highlight of the facility tour was a visit to the office of the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Onyeka Ibezim,  by NANS executives.

ADC Unveils Strategy to Reclaim Anambra at First Coalition Convergence

AKWA — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has held its first ever coalition convergence in Awka, Anambra State, bringing together a broad alliance of political parties, civil society groups and stakeholders determined to reshape Nigeria political trajectory.

Addressing the gathering, State Chairman of ADC, Comrade Patrick Obianyo, described the event as more than just a political meeting, but a "movement and declaration" of intent to reclaim Anambra and restore its place as the "light of the nation." He decried the rising insecurity, soaring unemployment and what he termed a slide into a de facto one-party system in Nigeria.

"This coalition is born out of the urgent need to rescue our federation," Obianyo said. "We must change the trajectory and rebuild our cities and states. Anambra must lead by example."

Speaking on behalf of the ADC governorship candidate Mr. John Chuma Nwosu, the deputy governorship candidate Sir Geoffrey Nwobu (Obuka Awka) stressed the urgency of the national crisis, citing widespread poverty, deep-rooted corruption and ongoing insecurity.

"Our brothers in Benue have been massacred, corruption is rampant, and leadership appears indecisive," Nwobu lamented. "ADC offers a platform for change , one built on perseverance, determination and diligence."

He announced that ADC would officially flag off its state campaign on June 11, 2025, with a promise to run a people-focused, issue-based campaign.

In his keynote presentation titled "Building and Maintaining a Sustainable Coalition for Successful Engagement"  delivered by Professor Chukwuemeka Jaja Nwanegbo, former Head of the Political Science Department at Nnamdi Azikiwe University. He emphasized the strategic importance of coalitions in Nigeria's political landscape.

"Winning elections and ensuring balanced governance in Nigeria requires meaningful coalitions anchored on shared principles not just numbers," Nwanegbo stated.

Leaders from other political parties and civil organizations also declared support for the coalition. Labour Party chieftain Nnamdi Aniagor praised ADC initiative, pledging to take the message of unity back to his party members. Representatives from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and various civil society groups echoed a shared commitment to "change the narrative" of governance in Nigeria.

The event concluded with a symbolic presentation of ADC branded polos and face caps to coalition partners, marking a united front in their quest to provide an alternative voice for the people of Anambra and beyond.
