Commissioners drags House of Assembly to Court, see why

PORT HARCOURT — Rivers State is currently embroiled in a political crisis as Governor Siminalayi Fubara's 19 commissioners have initiated legal action against the Martin Amaewhule-led House of Assembly. The commissioners are seeking to prevent the Assembly from nullifying their appointments, which were approved by four lawmakers loyal to Governor Fubara. 

This legal move follows a recent Supreme Court decision affirming Martin Amaewhule as the legitimate Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, dismissing a cross-appeal by Governor Fubara. The commissioners are requesting an interlocutory injunction to stop the Assembly from enforcing resolutions passed on March 5, 2025, that declared their appointments void. They also seek to bar the Assembly from interfering in their official duties. 

In a related development, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (retired), Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RISIEC), along with his commissioners, has filed a lawsuit challenging the Assembly's authority to summon them regarding the nullified October 2024 Local Government Elections. The Assembly had initially given Enebeli a 48-hour ultimatum to appear, later extending it by 72 hours after he failed to comply. 

Presiding over the matter, Justice Frank Onyiri granted permission for the claimants to serve the Assembly through substituted means and adjourned the hearing to April 17, 2025. 

Meanwhile, the Rivers State House of Assembly has reiterated its summons for RISIEC officials to explain the funding sources for the nullified local government election and the planned expenditure for a new election scheduled for August 9, 2025. The Assembly has also urged Governor Fubara to present the 2025 Appropriation Bill, warning of potential legislative action if he fails to do so. 

Amid these tensions, the Rivers State Police Command has pledged to address threats to national security, following warnings from militant groups about possible attacks on oil installations due to the ongoing political unrest. Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju assured residents of the police's preparedness to handle any disturbances, stating that they are ready to maintain order in the state.

PORT HARCOURT — The political landscape in Rivers State has been thrown into turmoil following a Supreme Court ruling that intensified internal divisions within the Martin Amaewhule-led State House of Assembly. The new wave of discord stems from growing calls to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara, with sources indicating that the Assembly is now deeply divided over the matter. 

Tensions within the Assembly came to a 

head during a recent plenary session, when a proposal to extend a 48-hour ultimatum against the governor took an unexpected turn. One lawmaker pushed for immediate impeachment proceedings, but his attempt was met with strong resistance, particularly from his colleague representing the Ijaw ethnic group, who vehemently opposed the move. This sparked 

a heated argument among the lawmakers, revealing the deepening rift within the assembly. 

Adding fuel to the fire, another legislator, seemingly acting on instructions from an influential figure referred to as "Oga'" - believed to be the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike - insisted that the Assembly must follow directives. Amid the escalating tensions, Amaewhule, the Speaker of the House, was forced to grant another 48-hour extension in an attempt to diffuse the situation. 

However, the unrest did not subside. Five lawmakers, reportedly aligned with the FCT Minister, broke away after the plenary fora closed-door meeting, further stoking rumors of a deepening rift within the Assembly. Meanwhile, the remaining lawmakers, including several from the ljaw extraction, expressed concerns that the impeachment bid was not merely an attempt to remove Governor Fubara but rather part of a larger political strategy to bolster the governorship ambitions of Martin Amaewhule, an Ikwerre son from Obio/Akpor. 

The lawmakers from the Ijaw extraction strongly condemned the impeachment move, viewing 

it as a ploy to consolidate power and maintain control within the same political dynasty. They argued that the efforts to impeach Fubara 

were an orchestrated power grab, aimed at undermining the ljaw people's influence in the state's governance. 

As the political crisis continues to unfold, the people of Rivers State are closely monitoring the developments. With key political figures at odds and the fate of the governor hanging in the balance, the next moves by the Assembly members could determine the course of the state's leadership. It remains to be seen who will ultimately "blink" first in this volatile political standoff. 

APC Group Drums Support for Defence Minister, Condemns Campaign of Calumny Against Him

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Northwest Alliance for Good Governance (APC-NWAGG) has called out what it describes as a baseless and slanderous campaign aimed at discrediting the Honourable Minister of Defence, Alhaji Muhammad Badaru Abubakar. The group condemned recent allegations circulated by a faceless organization, which they claim seeks to tarnish the minister's reputation and diminish the strides made in improving security across the North.

In a statement signed by Comrade Auwal Shuaibu Gumel, the group's secretary and spokesperson, APC-NWAGG denounced the "obnoxious and malignant report" which it claimed was propagated by an anonymous group known as the APC Solidarity Vanguard. Gumel expressed concern over the accusations, which suggest that the minister has engaged in anti-party activities and attempted to undermine President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration.

"The Honourable Minister has demonstrated unwavering loyalty to the APC and its principles," Gumel stated. "In the lead-up to the last presidential elections, he mobilized support for APC across various parties and regions, particularly among northern residents in the Southwest, ensuring their endorsement for President Tinubu. Any claims suggesting otherwise are simply fictitious."

The group further urged the people of the North to rally around Minister Badaru and to offer prayers for him and his fellow defence leaders, emphasizing the significant improvements in regional security. Gumel highlighted that ongoing efforts under the Tinubu administration, with Badaru at the helm of the Ministry of Defence, have successfully reduced the activities of armed groups along critical routes like the Kaduna-Abuja road, significantly enhancing the safety of residents.

Ambassador Abdullahi Dalhatu, the APC-NWAGG coordinator, expressed dismay over additional allegations implying that Northern leaders might betray President Tinubu in the future. Dalhatu dismissed these claims as "the mere product of detractors' imaginations." He emphasized that Minister Badaru's tenure as governor of Jigawa and his current role in the administration reflect a deep commitment to Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.

The APC in Jigawa State also condemned the reports, noting that it has observed a pattern of malicious content aimed at creating discord within the party. According to Hon. Aminu Sani Gumel, Chairman of the APC in Jigawa, the party is determined to maintain unity and has warned against any attempts to destabilize the government, whether through fake news or other divisive tactics.

In light of these developments, APC-NWAGG encouraged the public to disregard the report and focus on the progress made by the Ministry of Defence. Comrade Gumel pointed to the consistent gains in the fight against banditry and terrorism across the North, asserting that Minister Badaru's legacy is rooted in good governance and tangible results for the safety of Nigerians.

"The people of the North should take inspiration from other regions that continue to support their leaders. This is not a time for divisiveness, but for unity and encouragement," Gumel concluded.

The APC Northwest Alliance for Good Governance affirmed its commitment to supporting Minister Badaru Abubakar and President Tinubu's administration in delivering on their promises to secure the nation and provide a foundation of peace and stability for all Nigerians.

C’River Local Government election marred with non-availability, late arrival of materials and thuggery

As Cross River Independent Electoral Commission, CROSIEC commences the local government election in several locations across the state, reports reaching our newsroom from reporters in the field has it that the process isn't seamless and smooth as was promised by the election umpire.

Observations from the field reveals that in many polling units especially in Calabar Municipality, CROSIEC staff were not on ground with materials even as late as 10:30 am to commence the election process.  

Reports also have it that in some polling units along Jonathan bypass and its environs APC thugs were said to have hijacked and materials meant for the election, while in some polling units election thugs believed to be working for the APC were seen thumbprinting in an uncompleted building.

 

Speaking with the state Chairman of SDP and chairman of the Local Government election monitoring committee under IPAC, Dr. Ambo Ekpenyong, he expressed disappointment over the process stating that the election has been compromised as APC agents were having a fill day in the field. He also blamed the opposition parties for not having experienced agents who will ensure the right thing is done in all polling units.

Reports from the central senatorial district as at press time has it that CROSIEC staff weren't given the result sheet to take to their polling units, which speaks volume and raises suspicion. The Chapter chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Boki Hon. Fabian Okwajie in a social media post informed that the process in Boki is condemnable as his party have recorded several unlawful happenings in the cause of the election. Particularly where materials were not complete in some units and result sheets not given to polling units as well as card carrying members of the ruling APC engaged by CROSIEC to conduct the election.

"…especially in reference to my community, Buanchor in Boki LGA, polling unit numbers 003, 004, and 025 are revealing. The individuals listed for these units are well known APC members from my community, yet they have been assigned as polling unit officers and clerks for today's election, organized by CROSIEC. This situation is disheartening, especially for a democracy striving to grow and strengthen over time…" He said.

 

In a telephone conversation with a Peoples Democratic Party stakeholder who preferred not to be mentioned because he wasn't authorised to speak to the press, TDN confirmed that the situation in the North is more serious as elections in Ukelle had been stopped as at the time of filing this report. According to our source, CROSIEC staff came to the field without a result sheet and declaration forms. After heavy protest by the opposition party the result sheets were released but the declaration forms weren't. Our source also informed us that some CROSIEC staff refused to mount their polling units. He added that with all these shenanigans, opposition parties had made sure the election doesn't hold till the needful is done.  

Recall that CROSIEC had earlier during an engagement with journalists in the state while preparing to kick start the process promised to conduct a free, fair and just election giving all political parties a level playing ground. 

PDP Chapter Chairman in Cross River State Defects to APC, Leading Mass Exodus Across Party Lines

To herald a political shift within Akamkpa,  nay Cross River State, Pastor Hon. Raymond C. Asuquo, the former Chapter Chairman of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Akamkpa, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) alongside a formidable wave of followers, signaling a strategic blow to the PDP. Asuquo's defection, announced at the APC's campaign grand finale at the Akamkpa Local Government Council reflects disillusionment with the internal workings of the PDP and his aspirations to realign his political efforts for local and national impact.

Pastor Asuquo, who served as PDP Chapter Chairman from April 2019 until the last Congress, was well-regarded for his instrumental role in party coordination, having also served as the coordinator for all chapter chairmen across the state during the first two years of his tenure. Known for his adept strategic planning, Asuquo orchestrated key party activities, working tirelessly to strengthen the PDP's influence. However, the pervasive internal discord and what he described as a "constitutional disconnect" within the party ultimately led to his decision to depart.

Asuquo further lamented the absence of a robust reconciliation mechanism within the PDP, claiming it had become "rudderless" under the ineffective leadership of the current state executive. He highlighted a disconnect between the party's national and state directives and its foundational principles, stressing that the leadership's operational methods have strayed far from the party's constitution. "The PDP's framework has diverged from its founding values, making it increasingly difficult to fulfill the party's mission," Asuquo noted.

Beyond procedural grievances, Pastor Asuquo emphasised the primacy of "local politics" as a driving factor in his decision. "Politics is local," he stated, underscoring his desire to unite with fellow Akamkpa natives, respected political allies, and notable figures to propel both his community and the nation forward. By joining the ruling APC, Asuquo believes he can better serve his people and make impactful contributions that align with his vision for sustainable local and state development.

The dynamic grassroots politician, who previously served as a councillor representing Uyanga Ward in Akamkpa's 4th Legislative Council and held the position of deputy leader, expressed optimism about his new political platform. Asuquo also acknowledged his past role as the co-founder of the PDP Rescue Mission International, an organisation aimed at salvaging the PDP from what he saw as inevitable decline. Despite his best efforts to support the party's revival, he conceded that internal forces stymied progress, making his continued loyalty untenable.

The mass defection saw key figures from various political affiliations join Asuquo's ranks, including prominent Labour Party members and other PDP stalwarts from different wards. According to reports, numerous influential local figures who have grown frustrated with PDP's leadership have joined the APC, signaling a tectonic shift in Akamkpa's political landscape. The once-diverse political affiliations within the local government now appear to coalesce around the APC, setting the stage for a stronghold in the state.

As the former liaison officer for Hon. Chief Daniel E. Asuquo, a former member of the House of Representatives, Pastor Asuquo's move to the APC underscores his vision for consolidating efforts with influential players. He conveyed confidence that the APC's inclusiveness and forward-looking approach present the best path to meet Akamkpa's evolving needs.

Observers of Cross River politics view Asuquo's defection as more than symbolic; it portends a seismic shift in the state's political dynamics, as numerous PDP supporters are expected to follow his lead. The recent wave of defections hints at the potential dissolution of the PDP's stronghold in Akamkpa, where local sentiment now favours the APC as the party poised to drive meaningful change.

With his exit, Asuquo issued a final rebuke to the PDP, stating, "This exodus is a testament to the need for change. For those of us committed to real progress, the APC offers a platform for genuine leadership." His defection, alongside a substantial cohort, marks a turning point in the state's political trajectory, positioning the APC as the vanguard of Cross River State's future.

CALABAR - The Leadership of Labour Party in Cross River State led by Rt. Hon. Daniel Asuquo, AKA 'Dansuki' former lawmaker and Labour Party Southern Senatorial District candidate for the 2023 election has called on the governor of Cross River State to reciprocate the kind gesture meted on him by the party during the 2023 governorship race where the party overwhelmingly supported and voted for him. 

Dansuki said the party supported and voted for Prince Otu to become governor and it's time for the governor to honour the party by ensuring a level playing ground in the forthcoming Local Government Elections and allow the people's votes to count. 

He said the party has an unfinished business with the governor which is the People's First and that means the people's votes must count and the peoples will must be respected in the forthcoming elections. 

The former lawmaker who was speaking during the formal declaration of intent by the Calabar Municipality Chairmanship candidate, Hon. Shadrach Ikpeme (Papa Ikpeme) of Labour Party recently held in Calabar encouraged party members to be statefast and do the needful as God will crown their efforts with success. 

"Labour Party supported the governor of Cross River State, we didn't not support APC, we support Prince Otu as a person, we supported him as our governor, and we have an unfinished business with him. And the unfinished business we have with him is the 'People First'. The People First means the people's voice must count, the People's vote must count and the will od the People must previous over personal interest". He said. 

"To change Cross River State, the governor promised People First, and we are seeing the dividends of democracy, and the dividends of democracy must also represent the people's choice." He concluded. 

Papa Ikpeme who shared his blueprint for Calabar Municipality said he is ready to revolutionise agriculture in Calabar Municipality, ensure a functional health care delivery system by focusing on improving quality primary healthcare. He added that Education will be given a place of pride in his administration as he intend to improve on the federal government initiated home grown feeding  program while ensuring a conducive learning and teaching environment in public schools within Municipality. 

Akamkpa in the Eyes of the Storm as Works Commissioner Plans to Impose Mother-In-Law as Chairman

The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Hon. Ankpo Pius Edet, is allegedly pushing to impose his mother-in-law, Mrs. Titi Ndifon, as the consensus candidate for the chairmanship position of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akamkpa Local Government Area. This controversial move comes after a failed attempt to promote his wife, Hon. Mary Ankpo, for the same position, a plan that was abandoned following widespread negative publicity.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that the imposition of Mrs. Ndifon was secured through a 70 million Naira bribe paid to the committee responsible for screening the chairmanship aspirants. This alleged payment was reportedly made to ensure Mrs. Ndifon's candidacy is upheld, despite opposition from various quarters within the community and party structure.

Observers have expressed concerns that Hon. Pius Ankpo's actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the interests of his community, which has several other qualified aspirants. Critics argue that his push for Mrs. Ndifon as the consensus candidate ignores the historical fact that Uyanga Ward, where he hails from, has never produced a chairman, unlike Iko Ward, which once had Hon. Ntufam Matthew Olory.

Sources close to the political scene in Akamkpa have further revealed that Hon. Ankpo is embittered with his community, although the reasons for this sentiment remain unclear. His actions have raised eyebrows and stirred discontent, with many seeing the latest move as an attempt to consolidate personal and family influence over the local political landscape.

The politics surrounding the chairmanship race in Akamkpa has taken an ugly turn, with reports of scandalous dealings, including alleged attempts to use coercion and inducements to secure the top seat. According to insiders, the situation has deteriorated to a point where sex scandals are reportedly being exploited to influence decisions, casting a shadow over the local government's political integrity.

Efforts to reach Hon. Pius Ankpo for comments on the matter have proven unsuccessful, as his phone has remained unreachable. This lack of response has further fueled speculations and uncertainty over his intentions and strategies concerning the chairmanship position.

Stakeholders of the party who met under the aegis of the APC Victory and Success Support Group cited the pressing security, social, and economic challenges facing in the area as reasons behind their decision. the leaders highlighted the need for firm leadership to address the local government's volatile security situation, the rising incidence of cultism, and the alarming rate of kidnapping and drug abuse.

Contained in a communiqué signed by several notable chieftains of the party, including Ntufam Roland Itambu, Obod Cletus Ikey, and Charity Orok, the group emphasized the critical need for a leader who is brave, audacious, and resolute in tackling these issues. While recognising the contributions of women good governance they argued that the current climate requires a leader with a track record of confronting and neutralizing threats.

While we have unwavering respect for the women in our midst and acknowledge their potential in governance, we believe that the unique challenges facing our local government require leadership that is specifically equipped to handle the pressing realities of today. Chairman Aspirant Calabar Municipality 

CALABAR, —Labour Party (LP) Calabar Municipality Chairmanship aspirant, Mr. Papa Ikpeme, has pledged to abolish what he describes as "unfair taxation" levied on traders at Marian Market if elected into office. This promise was made in response to a social media conversation highlighting the multiple levies previously imposed on market traders, including a Chairman's levy, Chairman's wife levy, and a touts levy.

The issue was first raised by Efio-Ita Nyok a social media user on Cross River cyberspace, who noted that traders in the popular Marian Market were subjected to multiple levies. "Do you know that traders at Marian Market paid Chairman's levy, Chairman's wife levy, and touts levy?" Nyok asked, prompting a discussion about the harsh realities faced by market traders.

Reacting to the post, Ikpeme voiced concern about the struggles of vulnerable traders, particularly the elderly, who, aside from providing for themselves, are compelled to pay what he termed as "cruel" and unfair charges. He remarked, "The thought of an old woman struggling to feed and get meds, and still have to struggle to give money to guys who worked for a party or person is cruel."

In a firm response, Ikpeme expressed his intention to end this exploitative practice, which he believes unfairly burdens struggling traders. He told journalists that he will implement Resolution 70 of the Cross River State House of Assembly (CRSHA) as well as the Presumptive Tax Law No. 8 of 2023. "I will stop unfair taxation," he stated, making it a key point in his campaign manifesto for the forthcoming local government elections.

Eta Ekong Imona is a native of both Big Qua Clan and Ishie Clan in Calabar Municipality, Cross River State. Born into a Christian family affiliated with the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, Big Qua Town Parish, Eta is a devoted husband and father. He began his educational journey at Auntie Margaret International School (AMIS), where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC) in 1989. He then progressed to the renowned Hope Waddell Training Institute, completing his Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) in 1995.

Driven by a passion for environmental stewardship, Eta gained admission to the University of Calabar, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree (B.Sc) in Environmental Protection Management from the Department of Geography & Regional Planning in 2004. During his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Zuru LGA, Kebbi State, he served as a Geography teacher at the Federal Science & Technical College, Zuru.

Eta's commitment to continuous professional development led him to obtain a certificate from the Waste Management Society of Nigeria (WMSN) in 2008. He is also a trained and certified oil spill remediator and safety manager as of 2015. He began his professional career at the Cross River State Emergency Response Centre (ERC) as a support staff, where he was extensively trained in firefighting, security operations, and served in the office of the State Security Adviser from 2007 to 2012.

Subsequently, he transitioned into private service and successfully managed several hospitality establishments, including Marina Resort Hotel, Orange Resort, Michelle Suite Hotels, and Viaaem Hotel. Eta Imona has proven himself as an adept administrator, capable of delivering on complex assignments with minimal supervision.

His leadership qualities extend beyond professional settings. He is the immediate past President General of the Qua Clans Youth Assembly and has served as Coordinator of the Calabar Municipality Youth Leaders Forum. In addition, he is a member of the Ndidem of the Quas / Paramount Ruler of Calabar Municipality Traditional Court.

A seasoned politician, Eta once aspired to represent Calabar Municipality State Constituency in the Cross River State House of Assembly. His candidacy was highly commended by the Department of State Services (DSS) for conducting one of the healthiest consultations. He is a committed stakeholder in Ward Four (4), having served as Secretary of the Edim Inok Campaign Council, and as a member of both the Asuquo Ekpeyong Campaign Organization and the State Mobilization Committee for Senator Prince Bassey Otu.

Beyond his professional and political engagements, Eta is a lover of contemporary music and an accomplished instrumentalist, particularly skilled with the bass guitar. He is also a respected political analyst.

LG Election: Group Insist on zoning Yala Chairmanship to Ukelle South

A  Non political organisation, Yala Movement for Equity, Justice and Fairness has insisted on  the upholding of the 2010 zoning arrangement in Yala Local Government Area ahead of the forth- coming  local government election in the staite.

In a Press Statement signed by its Chairman, Hon Edwin Odey Aboyi and Secretary, Pastor Paul Ushang Ekwok, the organisation emphasised that respect for the 2010 zoning arrangement by the Committee headed by Barrister Ogana Lukpata will put pay to the tension and deliberate confusion currently ensuing in the local government area through the dragging of the position by politicians to their area

"The group has reviewed the political discussions in Yala which has generated so much tension and deliberate confusion in the polity and resolved to stand by the 2010 zoning committee report of Yala Local Government Area signed by Barrister Ogana Lukpata, Chairman/ member representing Wanihem ward, Mr Omaga Odo member representing Okpoma ward, Hon Matthias Oko, member representing Gabu ward, Hon Sam Anwegbe member representing Igede ward, Mrs Angelina Lifu, member representing Okuku ward,  Mr Joe Agida, member representing Echemofana ward, late Mr Otubala Omachi member, representing O"ward, Hon Dan Ugbama,member representing Wanikade ward, Hon Cyprian Uneji,member representing Ijiraga Ward, Chief Hon Mrs Theresa Ezama, member representing Yahe ward, Mr Johnson Ogiri, member representing Yache ward, Hon Emma Lifu ,member representing Ugaga ward and Chief Henry Onwe, Secretary/ member representing Mfuma/ Ntrigom ward"  The organisation wrote.

The group stated that the zoning committee fashioned an equitable and acceptable zoning by splitting Yala into five blocs and that should be respected.

"The zoning formula adopted by the committee split Yala into five blocs as follows: North Ukelle - Wanihem, Wanikade, Wanokom and Igede wards. South Ukelle - Mfuma Ntrigom and Ijiraga wards. Western Yala - Yahe, Okpoma and O"wards. Eastern Yala - Echemofana, Okuku, Ugaga wards and Yache and Gabu wards

"In view of the fact that the entire Caucus in 2010 agreed that the position of Chairman of Yala should be  held on rotational basis  among the five blocs and in lieu of the fact that the last Chairman of Yala from Ukelle extraction was from North Ukelle bloc, the group has zoned the Chairmanship position in the 2024 election to South Ukelle and therefore requests all political parties participating in the forth- coming local government election to ensure their candidates are picked  from the two wards in  South Ukelle" The group concluded.

CALABAR - Comrade Emmanuel Olayi emerged as the chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Cross River State Chapter, following a keenly contested election held yesterday.

Olayi, who hails from Obanliku LGA, secured his victory through a consensus reached by all eight aspirants for the position of State Chairman. The elections, scheduled for Friday, 19th July, at the U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar, saw all candidates undergo security screening and sign a Peace Accord, facilitated by the State Security Service (SSS) and the office of the State Security Adviser.

The Cross River State Commissioner for Youth and Skills Development, Barr. Ijom-odum Ukam, expressed satisfaction with the entire process leading to Olayi's emergence as Youth Chairman. Ukam noted the maturity and spirit of sportsmanship displayed by the candidates, urging them to support the new chairman.

The newly elected chairman, Comrade Emmanuel Olayi, moved to tears, expressed gratitude to his fellow contestants for finding him worthy. He pledged to carry out his duties in accordance with the council's constitution and appreciated the efforts of Governor Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu, the Commissioner for Youths, Barr. Ijom-odum Ukam, the Chief of Staff to the governor, Hon. Emmanuel Ironbar, and the Senior Special Adviser to the governor on general duties, Barr. Ekpenyong Akiba, in ensuring a successful election process.

Earlier, the Deputy Governor of Cross River State, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, Ph.D., urged the youths to use their energy and talents to contribute positively to society. He made this call in his office on Friday, shortly before the commencement of the election, when a delegation from the National Youth Council (NYC) led by State Commissioner for Youth and Entrepreneurship, Barr. Ijom Ukam, and the President of the National Youth Council, Ambassador Dokubo, visited his office.

He assured the NYC leadership of government support to ensure free and fair elections for the State Chapter offices. Odey expressed pride in the youths of Cross River State who are using their time and talents for the good of the nation, in contrast to those involved in social vices such as kidnapping and violent demonstrations.

"We believe in encouraging the youth population. That is why there is fair representation of the youth in the present administration," he said. He charged them to ensure the elections were free and fair, devoid of violence.

The Commissioner for Youth, Barr. Ijom Ukam, highlighted the purpose of their visit as updating the Deputy Governor on the activities preceding and during the election. Ukam affirmed that, with the Deputy Governor's encouragement and the State government's support, the election would be hitch-free, allowing the National Youth Council's visions and ideals to be achieved in Cross River State.

Ambassador Dokubo, the President of the National Youth Council, reiterated the national leadership's resolve to ensure a free and fair election in the State. He called on all Nigerian youths to shun violence and embrace diplomacy in addressing their grievances.

CALABAR- As the Electoral Process for the Youth Council of Nigeria kicks off again, Comrade Emmanuel Olayi, a veteran member of the Cross River State Youth Council, has declared his candidacy for the position of Chairman in the upcoming elections. 

From Nyanya Ward in Bekwera Local Government Area of Cross River State, Olayi brings a decade of experience and a clear vision for the future of the Council.

In a recent interview, Olayi outlined his reasons for seeking the chairmanship and his ambitious plans for the Council. He emphasized the need for value and ethical reorientation among the youth, aiming to foster a sense of responsibility and reduce criminal activities. "Our mission is to create an inclusive agenda that transcends party lines, ethnic groups, and residential status," Olayi explained.

Olayi informed that his campaign is built on several key initiatives which include:

Value and Ethical Reorientation: Promoting positive behaviors and reducing criminal activities through strong values and ethics.

Enterprise Development: Transforming the Youth Council into an enterprising entity by identifying and addressing business opportunities, including agricultural projects such as cassava and maize cultivation.

Health Insurance Scheme: Advocating for a Youth Health Insurance Scheme to ensure accessible healthcare, including mental health support.

Data Collection and Classification: Creating a comprehensive database of youths, categorized by profession and interests, to facilitate mentorship and networking.

Olayi aims to implement these initiatives over a four-year tenure, with agricultural projects launched in the first year, followed by transportation and youth house development. He assures a transparent and open governance system where every young person in Cross River State both indegines and residents will be carried along emphasizing the legitimacy of his administration.

ELECO Screens, Clears Aspirants for Youth Council Election

CALABAR- The Prince Ndiyo-led Electoral Committee yesterday held an 'Aspirants Briefing and Confirmation of Screening' for all candidates for the forthcoming National Youth Council Election in Cross River State.

Addressing the aspirants at the meeting, which took place at the conference hall of the State Ministry of Youth Development, Prince Ndiyo Ndiyo, Chairman of the Electoral Committee, stated that his committee would adhere strictly to the terms of reference handed over to them. He confirmed that the elections would be held on the stipulated dates and venue as decided during the last management meeting.

Prince Ndiyo acknowledged that his committee inherited many liabilities from the previous bodies responsible for conducting the election. To foster a peaceful and harmonious electoral process, his committee has decided to grant waivers to all aspirants. This means all aspirants, including those who were previously disenfranchised and marginalized, will be cleared to stand for the election.

"This decision is aimed at avoiding rancour and ensuring that all aspirants have a fair chance to participate," said Prince Ndiyo. "We want to provide a level playing field for everyone involved."

Aspirants used the opportunity to interact, ask questions, and seek clarifications on grey areas regarding the election. One of the aspirants, Emmanuel Olayi, expressed optimism about the process, stating, "It's reassuring to see the committee taking steps to ensure fairness and transparency."

The  Cross River State Commissioner for Youth Development, Barrister Ijom-odum Ukam, who was present at the meeting, admonished both the committee and the aspirants to adhere to the constitution and avoid actions that could lead to litigation after the election. He expressed satisfaction with the process so far, adding that both the committee and the aspirants had conducted themselves with maturity and discipline.

"This election is crucial for the future of our youth council and the broader community," Barrister Ukam emphasized. "We must ensure it is conducted with the highest standards of integrity."

The successful conduct of this election is seen as a vital step towards restoring confidence in youth leadership and governance in Cross River State.

CALABAR - In a move towards revitalizing youth leadership in Cross River State, the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has reactivated its election process. This development comes with the formation and inauguration of a new Central Planning Committee (CPC)  after the initial one set up by the outgoing State Chairman, Comrade Daniel Obo. 

The CPC which was set up recently in a management meeting held at the Cross River State Youth Hous also had the Electoral Committee (ELECO) inaugurated.

Announcing the committee membership, Comrade Michael Ukpong, the Assistant Secretary-General, South-South Zone, said members of committees are men of integrity that were carefully selected for the job while charging them to put aside all differences and execute their duties objectively to ensure a smooth election process.

Comrade Bernard Oko was inaugurated as the Chairman of the Central Planning Committee,CPC while Comrade Prince Ndiyo Ndiyo was inaugurated as the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, ELECO. Both leaders pledged their commitment to conducting a free and fair election.

In his remarks, Comrade Prince Ndiyo Ndiyo informed that he originally thought having serve the council it was time to relaxed and play the advisory role, but since the responsibility to serve as ELECO chairman has come, he will handle it without fear or favour.

"So nobody should come with any intimidation. It is strictly with council business. And we are going to do it accordingly. The most important thing is that we will have a free affair election." He said. 

Speaking with our correspondence shortly after the meeting, Prince Ndiyo Ndiyo who spoke on the importance of the task ahead said, "The new platform given to me by Cross River State Youths is a test of integrity and an opportunity to rewrite history. It is time to right our wrongs and prove to Cross Riverians that young people are capable of doing the right thing." Ndiyo assured that the upcoming election would be transparent and fair, similar to the elections that brought him into office in 2015.

Bernard Oko, the CPC Chairman, echoed similar sentiments, promising that his committee would operate with transparency to provide the youth with the leadership they deserve.

Comrade Great Ogban, the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee, drum on the need for a transparent election process, calling on all committee members to sanitize the system and give the youth council a clean slate.

The Commissioner for Youth Development, Barrister Ijom-odum Ukam, also addressed the meeting, emphasizing the necessity of a credible election. He admonished the committee members to avoid repeating past mistakes, warning that the government would not hesitate to dissolve the council if it fails to conduct credible elections.

As the NYCN Cross River State chapter moves forward, all eyes are on the newly inaugurated committees to deliver on their promises and restore confidence in youth leadership in the state

I will make appointments unattractive to young people in C'River - Prince Otu

As the countdown to 29th May begins, signaled by the collection of Certificate of return by the Cross River State Governor-Elect, Sen, Prince Bassey Edet Otu, His Deputy, Hon. Peter Odey and the 25 Members-Elect of the Cross River State House of Assembly, the governor elect has said that his administration will empower young people to live their dreams and forget about appointments into government offices. 

Otu who revealed this as part of his plans for governance spoke on "The People's First" Manifesto, shortly after receiving his Certificate of Returns from the electoral umpire, INEC. He said he will focus on the people and ensure Cross Riverians are placed first in every policy or actions of his administration adding that he will make appointments unattractive to young people by empowering them with skills and resources to be enterprising and self reliance. 

He said he will provide an enabling environment for businesses and entrepreneurs to flourish, while subsidising all factors of production. 

"...for the youths and women, your time has come, people will see and envy you, they shouldn't be envy and bitterness anymore in Cross River State. Appointments won't be popular again, we will support our young people in various skills development and support their entrepreneurial dreams. We will make the state business friendly and subsidies all factors of production."

We will increase Women participation in governance,  we will give Cross River State a facelift. I will not let you down, my words is my bond, if I cannot do it, I won't say it. But initially there will be sacrifices from us all." He concluded. 

He also used the opportunity to thank the party for standing strong all through the various stages of the race.
