2027: Nkoyo Toyo Unpacks Atiku’s Economic Recovery Plan

CALABAR —As Nigeria moves towards the 2027 general elections, former federal lawmaker, political activist, and Gubernatorial Candidate for African Democratic Congress, ADC in Cross River State, Nkoyo Toyo, has highlighted the economic recovery agenda of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, describing it as an alternative pathway to rebuilding the Nigerian economy.

Toyo, speaking during the commencement of the ADC presidential campaign activities in Cross River State, said Atiku’s economic philosophy was anchored on moving Nigeria away from an import-dependent and consumption-driven economy towards production, manufacturing, job creation and exports.

According to her, sustainable economic recovery must not be achieved at the expense of ordinary Nigerians, stressing that government policies should ultimately translate into lower living costs, affordable energy, employment opportunities and improved purchasing power.

The ADC, in its position on Atiku’s economic recovery plan, said the country could not achieve sustainable prosperity by continually imposing the burden of economic adjustment on households, businesses and states.

A major component of the plan, according to the party, is the restructuring of Nigeria’s political and economic architecture through greater devolution of powers from the Federal Government to the states.

The party argued that restructuring should involve reducing the scope of federal powers, reviewing the Exclusive Legislative List, strengthening fiscal federalism and giving states greater responsibility and authority over resources and development.

It also advocated constitutional reforms and the devolution of appropriate security responsibilities, including the establishment of state police subject to professional standards, human-rights safeguards and independent oversight.

Toyo and the ADC maintained that greater allocations from Abuja should not be mistaken for fiscal federalism, arguing that genuine fiscal autonomy would require states to have the authority and responsibility to generate, control and invest their own resources.

On security, the party linked Nigeria’s insecurity to broader economic challenges, including poverty, unemployment, rural underdevelopment and the destruction of livelihoods.

It therefore proposed an approach that combines professional policing and intelligence gathering with economic opportunities that can reduce the vulnerability of communities to criminal networks.

The ADC also called for modern intelligence systems, forensic capacity, improved communications infrastructure, databases and stronger inter-agency coordination as part of a comprehensive security reform.

On fuel and energy, Toyo's presentation also touched on the possibility of leveraging Nigeria’s domestic refining capacity to reduce the burden of imported refined petroleum products.

She argued that the existence of local refineries could provide an opportunity for government to develop mechanisms that support domestic supply and cushion the impact of energy costs on Nigerians.

The party further said Atiku’s economic agenda would place emphasis on an economy that produces rather than merely consumes, while combining fiscal responsibility with social protection, investment with inclusion and economic growth with shared prosperity.

The ADC said the success of any economic policy should ultimately be measured by its impact on citizens, particularly through food and transport costs, energy affordability, jobs, stronger businesses and improved living standards.

It also framed the 2027 election as a choice between maintaining the existing direction and pursuing what it described as a fundamentally different approach to Nigeria’s economic, political and security challenges.

The party said Nigeria needed a federation that devolves power rather than concentrating it in Abuja, states with genuine fiscal autonomy, a security architecture based on intelligence and professional policing, and constitutional reforms capable of strengthening democratic accountability.

It added that leadership should be judged by integrity, transparency, experience, verifiable records and the ability of public institutions to withstand scrutiny.

The ADC ultimately argued that Nigeria requires a redistribution of wealth, power, responsibility and resources, rather than what it described as a mere redistribution of poverty and bureaucratic structures.

ABUJA — The member representing Ogoja/Yala Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Peter Akpanke, has broken his silence on a viral video and other allegations circulating against him, insisting that his decision not to respond to his critics should not be interpreted as weakness.

Akpanke, in a statement titled “My Long Silence Is Not Foolishness,” said some of the issues currently being circulated on social media had already been resolved, while describing the controversies as part of what he called repeated attempts to smear his image and undermine his political career.

He said anyone who believed they had been defrauded should approach the appropriate government agencies, promising to make himself available for investigation.

MY LONG SILENCE IS NOT FOOLISHNESS

When I was elected into the House of Representatives about three years ago, I accepted the responsibility wholeheartedly as an act of fate and as a golden opportunity to serve my good people and contribute my quota to the development and advancement of OBO Federal Constituency.

Since I assumed office, this commitment to serve has been the mantra that has constituted the guiding spirit to which I have been tenaciously glued, and has been the basis for the modest strides we have witnessed amidst daunting challenges.

Over time, it has become a trend, and an ugly one indeed, that in spite of my resolve not to join issues with anybody in the course of the execution of my mandate, some people have arrogated to themselves the unethical position to castigate me, sometimes directly and in most cases through sponsorship of unprovoked attacks from their cronies, to smear my image and discredit me in the eyes of my constituents.

Even when I took the wise decision to join the ruling party, the social media was agog with sponsored despicable publications all targeted at running me down.

Today, it is in the public domain that recently, the PDP candidate for the House of Representatives position in my Constituency, granted an ill-conceived interview, in which, in addition to delving into attacks on my private life, he declared that there is no project to show for the three years I have so far represented OBO Federal Constituency.

As an elder brother whom I respect, I sincerely sympathize with his unconsciousness.

In all the above provocations, it is incontrovertible that I have deliberately maintained rare calmness, bearing in mind that nobody's personal opinion can be representative of the entire perception of my entire constituents.

I have also been wisely guided by the dictum that whoever is worthy of respect by me deserves to be respected even when the person opts for self-disrespect.

I make bold to declare that my modest strides and accomplishments are in the public domain for the larger public to perceive and assess.

Be that as it may, for some days, a video has been trending on social media concerning a purported transaction with one of my former staff, for which I had long intervened and settled.

The same content creator had published another video about a month ago with false, incoherent claims about another transaction, claiming that an assault was orchestrated by me.

I know that some people have already rashly capitalized on the lopsided trending video to ventilate their emotions and rain aspersions on me.

I bear them no grudge as they are entitled to their actions and they also have a duty to fulfill the desires of their paymasters.

For my teeming supporters who have refused to be swayed or distracted by all the distractions, I deeply appreciate your confidence in me, with a strong pledge that I shall not disappoint you.

I charge you all to remain glued to our vision and resist all provocations. Even if you have to respond to the fabrications, it should please be done with maximum civility to teach our detractors that though we are younger, we are wiser.

To the generality of OBO constituents, I hereby reassure you that I am still glued to the goal of achieving the best possible for us, no matter for how many times our detractors continue to change the narratives to suit their purpose.

Some people have even become more desperate about stalling my reelection than about the attainment of their own desires.

The good thing is that nobody is God and nobody can become God.

Every politician must also not forget that his life is in the public domain. The fact that some people have opted to maintain table manners is no weakness.

Some of the issues currently touted on social media are issues that have already been resolved.

None of my transactions with the people in question was done on social media. However, as a law-abiding citizen, if there is anybody who feels defrauded by me, such a person is hereby requested to approach the relevant agencies of government, and I shall make myself available for investigation.

2027: Group Endorses Tinubu, Otu, Other APC Candidates, Inaugurate Wards Coordinators

CALABAR — A grassroot sypport group identified as Ideal Progressive Movement has announced its endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Cross River State Governor, Sen. Bassey Edet Otu, and other candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group made its position known at its inaugural meeting, where members and supporters pledged their support for the APC and its candidates.

The endorsement was formally announced by AIG Chief Enene Okon (Rtd.), on behalf of the movement, as part of efforts to mobilise support for the party ahead of the elections.

A motion endorsing the decision was moved by Comr. Peter Okon, Special Adviser on Security to the Executive Chairman of Bakassi Local Government Area, and was supported by members present.

The meeting also witnessed the inauguration of ward coordinators for the movement, in a move aimed at strengthening its grassroots structure and expanding its presence across communities.

The inauguration was performed by the Executive Vice Chairman of Bakassi LGA, Hon. Princess Christiana Eso, who charged the newly inaugurated coordinators to see their appointments as a responsibility to the movement and the communities they represent.

Eso urged the coordinators to commence mobilisation in their respective wards, engage community stakeholders and work towards strengthening the movement's grassroots structures ahead of the 2027 elections.

The movement said the new ward coordinators would be responsible for mobilising members, engaging communities and promoting peaceful political participation.

It also reaffirmed its support for Tinubu, Otu, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, Rt. Hon. Joseph Bassey and Andrea Ekeng Inyang as APC candidates for the 2027 elections.

The Ideal Progressive Movement said the inauguration of the ward coordinators marked the beginning of a coordinated grassroots mobilisation campaign, urging members to remain united, disciplined and focused as preparations for the elections gather momentum.

The group said it was committed to working for the success of the APC and its candidates in the 2027 general elections.

2027: Cross River Consultative Forum Hails Otu, Ita-Giwa, Yari’s APC Campaign Council Appointments

CALABAR — Cross River State Consultative Forum (CRSCF) has congratulated Governor Bassey Edet Otu, Senator Florence Ita-Giwa and former Zamfara State Governor Abdulaziz Yari on their appointments to the All Progressives Congress (APC) 2027 Presidential Campaign Council.

The forum described the appointments as a recognition of the contributions, experience and political influence of the three Cross River-linked leaders and other progressive leaders ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued in Calabar and signed by its Chairman, Barr. Eyo Nsa Ekpo, and Secretary, Dr. Julius Ochim Okputu, the CRSCF specifically congratulated Senator Yari on his appointment as Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council.

The forum said Yari’s political experience, organisational capacity and commitment to the APC made him well positioned to coordinate the party’s presidential campaign.

It also described Governor Otu’s appointment as South-South Zonal Campaign Coordinator as an acknowledgement of his role in strengthening the APC in the region.

According to the forum, Otu, as the first elected APC governor in the South-South, has contributed to the expansion and consolidation of the party’s influence in the geopolitical zone through what it described as strategic leadership and political mobilisation.

The CRSCF further noted that the governor had played active roles in previous APC gubernatorial campaign efforts, including campaigns that contributed to the party’s victories in states such as Imo and Edo.

Legal Storm Brews in NDC as Aggrieved Aspirants Reject Cross River Primary Process

OBUBRA – A fresh crisis appears to be brewing within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Cross River State as aggrieved aspirants and party stakeholders threaten legal action over alleged irregularities in the conduct of the party's primary election for the Obubra/Etung Federal Constituency.

The controversy centers on the participation of Mr. Ken Egbas in the party's primary election held on May 29, despite claims by stakeholders that he was not among the aspirants cleared by the party's screening committee to contest the House of Representatives ticket.

Documents sighted by party members reportedly indicate that Dr. Tawo Obah Edom was the only aspirant who successfully passed the screening exercise and was duly cleared to contest for the ticket. Stakeholders argue that, based on the party's established guidelines, Dr. Edom should have emerged as the party's candidate through affirmation by delegates and party leaders.

However, the unexpected appearance of Ken Egbas on the ballot has triggered widespread dissatisfaction among party faithful, with many questioning the transparency and credibility of the primary process.

Several stakeholders have described the development as a violation of the party's internal procedures and a dangerous precedent capable of eroding confidence in the NDC's commitment to internal democracy.

 ...Desperation Overrides Reason, Propaganda Becomes The Last Refuge

The attention of concerned stakeholders and lovers of peace in Akamkpa Local Government Area has been drawn to the mischievous and emotionally charged “open letter” purportedly addressed to His Excellency, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, Governor of Cross River State.

Ordinarily, such a publication drenched in bitterness, political frustration, and deliberate distortion of facts would not deserve a response. However, silence in the face of calculated falsehood may wrongly be interpreted as consent. It therefore becomes necessary to put the records straight and expose the hypocrisy, desperation, and arrogance behind the said publication.

First and foremost, the so-called open letter is not only misleading, but a direct insult on the office, personality, and integrity of the Governor of Cross River State, a man who has consistently demonstrated uncommon patience, fairness, maturity, and commitment to democratic inclusion. 

It is laughable and unfortunate that individuals who were given every opportunity to present their grievances through the appropriate channels suddenly resorted to emotional blackmail and public propaganda after failing to manipulate the process to suit their selfish interests.

For the avoidance of doubt, the Governor never shut his doors against consultation, dialogue, or engagement. Both parties involved were given equal opportunities to state their positions, air their concerns, and seek peaceful resolutions. Rather than approach the process with maturity and political wisdom, their benefactor chose the path of needless confrontation, fault-finding, and political arrogance, even where no offence existed.

In the end, he merely succeeded in shooting himself on the foot.

One cannot continue to insult leadership, undermine party structure, disregard political elders, and still expect sympathy from the same system one persistently seeks to ridicule. Politics is not built on tantrums, entitlement mentality, or media intimidation. It is built on respect, loyalty, consultation, patience, and capacity.

The claim that “few people cannot decide the future of 140,000 people” is not only deceptive but intellectually dishonest. Political leadership across the world thrives on consultation, consensus building, party structures, and internal mechanisms recognized by law and tradition. Democracy is not synonymous with mob sentiment or social media agitation sponsored by disgruntled elements seeking relevance.

Across the 18 LGAs, decision of who should represent them are agreed upon through consensus from the elders and presented to the Governor, or through interface with the Governor which has been accepted by all. It's quite unfortunate that the Commissioner for Works & Infrastructure through his media aide, Marcel Edem has continued to fan the ember of hatred, dissatisfaction, heating the polity and inciting the public against the same administration his boss, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Ankpo Pius is a major beneficiary.

Calling for open primary when a consensus has been agreed upon  and pronounced by the Governor, is further questioning the wisdom of the Governor to seek the path of peace. 

Calling for open primary is akin to returning Akamkpa to the gory days in Akamkpa of political violence. 

Ironically, these person who are crying about exclusion, they were the same individuals who ignored wise counsel, rejected reconciliation efforts, and arrogantly dismissed political elders when peace was still achievable.

This is exactly why the Governor, in his wisdom and fatherly disposition, gave the timeless instruction:

“Go and learn how to respect your elders.”

That statement was not an insult. It was advice rooted in experience, discipline, political culture, and moral responsibility. Sadly, rather than reflect on those words, some individuals chose to escalate tensions through blackmail, propaganda, and public grandstanding.

Respect for elders is a foundational value in African society and remains critical in leadership and political engagement. No society progresses where younger political actors continuously insult, undermine, and challenge constituted authority simply because events did not favour their ambitions.

Furthermore, the attempt to portray Akamkpa as a divided and oppressed political entity is completely false. Akamkpa remains peaceful, politically active, and fully aligned with the vision of the Governor and the progressive direction of the administration.

The Governor’s “People First” mantra is evident across Cross River State through infrastructural development, strategic appointments, empowerment programmes, and deliberate efforts to carry all stakeholders along. Akamkpa has not been excluded from these gains. Therefore, it is dishonest for a few frustrated political actors to weaponize the emotions of the people simply because personal ambitions did not materialize as expected.

Those hiding under the guise of “concerned stakeholders” must understand that democracy also demands responsibility, decorum, and political maturity. You cannot claim to seek peace while simultaneously insulting leadership and attempting to incite public resentment against constituted authority.

His Excellency, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, remains a listening leader, a democrat, and a statesman whose calm disposition should never be mistaken for weakness. The Governor has shown fairness to all parties and continues to prioritize unity, stability, and the collective interest of Cross River State above individual political desperation.

History will indeed remember this moment, not for propaganda and emotional outbursts, but for the Governor’s maturity in the face of provocation and for the lessons it teaches about humility, respect, and political discipline.

Akamkpa does not belong to noise makers. Akamkpa does not belong to political blackmailers. Akamkpa belongs to responsible leaders and peaceful citizens committed to unity, progress, and development.

Those who truly love Akamkpa must abandon bitterness, sheath their swords, respect constituted authority, and embrace constructive engagement rather than inflammatory propaganda.

No amount of sponsored outrage can substitute for political wisdom. No amount of emotional blackmail can replace respect. And no amount of noise can override disciplined leadership.

Should Loyalty Count in Politics? The Dansuki Question

CALABAR – Politics is often described as a game of numbers, alliances, and ambition. Yet beneath the calculations lies a deeper and often uncomfortable question: should loyalty count in politics? And if it should, how should that loyalty be recognized?

As conversations around future political alignments continue within the All Progressives Congress in Cross River State, one issue increasingly surfaces in some political circles: should those who supported a collective cause when it mattered most be remembered when opportunities emerge?

This is where what many supporters call “the Dansuki question” begins.

The build-up to the 2023 elections in Cross River was dominated by a powerful argument: power should return to the South. It was an appeal rooted in equity, fairness, and rotational politics, principles many believed had helped maintain political balance in the state over the years.

That argument eventually prevailed, culminating in the emergence of Bassey Edet Otu as governor.

But political victories often leave behind another important question:

Supporters of Daniel Asuquo, popularly known as Dansuki, argue that his actions during the 2023 electoral cycle reflected a level of political sacrifice that deserves recognition.

After unsuccessfully seeking the governorship ticket under the People's Democratic Party, supporters say he had options. With the rising momentum around the Labour Party and the growing popularity of the Obedient Movement in Cross River, some believe he could have pursued a governorship ambition under a different platform.

Instead, supporters argue, he chose to pursue the senatorial race, a decision they interpret as an attempt to avoid fragmenting Southern votes at a time when the governorship contest featured a Southern candidate in Prince Otu against Sandy Onor from Central Cross River.

To those who advance this argument, the calculation was straightforward:

Another strong Southern governorship candidacy under a different platform could have complicated the broader push to return power to the South.

Whether one agrees with this interpretation or not, supporters maintain that Dansuki subordinated a larger personal ambition to what he saw as a broader Southern political interest.

Yet they insist the story did not end there.

According to supporters and campaign narratives from that period, Dansuki reportedly continued to encourage support for Prince Otu’s governorship ambition throughout portions of his political engagements, despite pursuing his own senatorial ambition under another platform.

For supporters, this was more than strategy—it was loyalty.

And loyalty, they argue, should matter.

Politics everywhere runs partly on memory: who stood with whom, who built alliances, who supported difficult causes, and who remained committed when outcomes were uncertain.

This raises difficult but legitimate questions:

* Should political sacrifice count in future considerations?

* Should loyalty be rewarded alongside competence and electability?

* Should those who helped build coalitions be remembered when power is negotiated?

For many supporters of Dansuki, the answer is yes.

Their argument extends beyond loyalty into equity and representation. They point out that the Akamkpa/Biase axis has never produced a senator despite decades of participation in the state’s political process.

In their view, the conversation is therefore twofold:

First, about historical balance and inclusion

Second, about whether political loyalty and sacrifice should count when stakeholders assess future leadership choices*l.

Others may disagree and argue that political decisions should rest solely on performance, broad acceptability, and future prospects.

That debate is legitimate.

But the question remains:

When political history is written, should those who sacrificed ambition for a larger cause be remembered?

Because perhaps that is the real issue behind the Dansuki question:

2027: ADC Begins Sale of Nomination Forms in C’River

CALABAR –The Cross River State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially commenced the sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for aspirants seeking to contest elective positions in the 2026/2027 general elections.

The exercise, which began on May 14, 2026, covers aspirants for Senate, House of Representatives, and State House of Assembly seats across the state.

In a statement issued in Calabar and signed by the State Secretary of the party, Dr. MacFarlane Ejah, the party said the move forms part of its preparations to field credible and people-oriented candidates for the upcoming elections.

According to the statement, the nomination process will run until May 22, 2026, at the ADC Cross River State Secretariat located at 38 MCC Road, by Pearl Suites Hotels, Calabar.

The party leadership described the process as open, transparent, and inclusive, noting that every qualified member of the party would be given equal opportunity to participate.

Wike’s Camp Suffers Setback as Court Dismisses Samuel Anyanwu’s Suit Against PDP

ABUJA— The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has dismissed the suit filed by Senator Samuel Anyanwu challenging his removal as the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), dealing a major setback to the camp of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, widely believed to have backed the embattled party chieftain.

Justice M. G. Umar, in a ruling delivered on Tuesday, struck out Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/254/2025 , Sen. Samuel Anyanwu v. INEC & Ors, in which the former PDP National Secretary sought judicial intervention to retain his position and restrain the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising or acting on any PDP correspondence not bearing his signature.

Anyanwu had approached the court following internal party disputes and earlier judicial pronouncements, arguing that his tenure as National Secretary subsisted until December 2025. He also relied on a previous Supreme Court decision which held that the leadership of political parties is largely an internal affair.

However, Justice Umar dismissed the suit on multiple grounds. The court reaffirmed the long-standing position of Nigerian courts that issues bordering on the internal administration and leadership of political parties are non-justiciable and fall outside the jurisdiction of the court.

The judge further held that the suit amounted to an abuse of court process, noting that several cases on the same subject matter were already pending or had been determined at different levels of the judiciary, including the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.

In addition, the court ruled that Anyanwu's tenure had expired by effluxion of time, having been elected as PDP National Secretary in 2021. The court held that he could not lawfully continue to lay claim to the office beyond the tenure for which he was elected.

The ruling effectively nullifies Anyanwu's attempt to use the courts to sustain his hold on the PDP national secretariat and is seen as a significant blow to the political influence of the Wike-aligned faction within the party.

Although Anyanwu has persistently maintained that his term remained valid, he was among the high-ranking PDP members expelled from the party during the Ibadan National Convention held in November 2025.

The PDP currently recognises the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC), which emerged from the Ibadan convention and has since been accepted by the party as its legitimate national leadership.

Political observers say the judgment further strengthens the authority of the PDP's current leadership while narrowing the legal and political options available to dissenting factions within the party.

UJIBHADA: Ebokpo Begins Early Grassroots Mobilization for Otu in C'River

CALABAR — In a move aimed at consolidating support for the re-election of Governor Bassey Edet Otu in 2027, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Irrigation Development, Johnson Andiambey Ebokpo, KSM, has unveiled the UJIBHADA Progressives Movement, a socio-political support platform designed to mobilise grassroots backing for continuity of the current administration in Cross River State.

The unveiling ceremony, which drew political stakeholders, party faithful and community leaders from across the state, also featured the inauguration of ward, chapter and local government coordinators to drive the activities of the movement at the grassroots level. The structure, according to organisers, is intended to ensure early mobilisation and sustained engagement ahead of the next general elections.

Speaking at the event, Ebokpo, who serves as the Director-General of the movement, said UJIBHADA was formed to galvanise widespread support for Governor Otu's second-term bid, stressing that continuity would guarantee the consolidation of the administration's people-oriented policies and developmental programmes.

Represented by the Deputy Director-General of the movement, Solomon Ekam, Ebokpo explained that "UJIBHADA," a term symbolising prosperity and good fortune, reflects the positive socio-economic direction of the Otu-led government and the need to sustain its reform agenda beyond 2027.

Providing an overview of the organisation, the Director of Special Duties, Dr. Cletus Omono, JP, disclosed that the UJIBHADA Progressives Movement is a duly registered political support group with coordinators across the 18 local government areas of Cross River State, ensuring a broad and inclusive reach.

In his keynote address, former council chairman of Obubra LGA, Dr. Bassey Eric Tom, urged members of the movement to remain united, disciplined and strategic in their engagements, noting that effective grassroots mobilisation would be critical to achieving success in 2027.

Also speaking, elder statesman and seasoned politician, High Chief Julius Mbina, highlighted the electoral strength of Obubra Local Government Area, calling on stakeholders to harness the voting capacity of the area to attract increased development and political relevance.

Goodwill messages were delivered by several stakeholders, including Mrs. Charity Orokwu, as the event attracted a wide spectrum of politicians, traditional leaders and party supporters who pledged their commitment to the ideals of the movement.

The high point of the event was the presentation of an Award of Excellent Performance to Ebokpo by the Director-General of AJEMO (Johnson Andiambey Ebokpo Movement), Mr. Ekawo Cyprian Awah. Presenting the award, Awah said the recognition was in appreciation of the commissioner's notable achievements within a short period in office and his contributions to community and state development.

Observers say the emergence of the UJIBHADA Progressives Movement signals the commencement of early grassroots political realignment ahead of the 2027 governorship election, with continuity of the Otu administration now gaining organised support across the state.

"Don’t Fight My Battles” – Dansuki Warns Supporters Against Political Hostility

CALABAR — Former federal lawmaker and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Rt. Hon. Daniel Asuquo (popularly known as Dansuki), has cautioned his supporters against engaging in political hostility on his behalf, urging them to prioritise friendship, family ties and community cohesion over partisan battles.

Dansuki gave the warning on while hosting friends, associates and political allies from across party lines at his residence during a get-together in Calabar.

Addressing the gathering, the former member of Nigeria's Green Chambers at the National Assembly who Represented Akamkpa/Biase Federal Constituency stressed that political differences must not be allowed to destroy long-standing personal relationships built over decades.

"Don't take my fight though. Dey your dey, make I dey my dey. Don't fight for me," he told the audience. "Your brother is your brother. Your sister is your sister. What has joined us together is the friendship we have built over the years."

He noted that many friendships present at the gathering predated politics, some spanning more than 30 to 40 years, and described such bonds as stronger and more enduring than political affiliations.

Dansuki expressed concern that political loyalty had strained relationships among some of his supporters, warning against turning political disagreements into personal enmity.

"I notice that a lot of you are not talking to yourselves because you are supporting different causes. Don't carry my battle. Friendship is bigger than politics," he said.

"You are free to support whoever you want to support outside here, but don't let your affiliations destroy the bond we share here." He added. 

The grassroot politician also used the occasion to reaffirm his support for the administration of Governor Bassey Otu, dismissing speculations on social media about a rift between them.

"I believe in Prince Otu's government because it was the right thing to do," Dansuki stated. "People should not mix business with politics. Relationship is relationship."

While acknowledging the dynamic nature of politics, he urged party members to stop undermining one another, warning that growth cannot be achieved by running others down.

"People must not pull others down to grow. You only think you are going somewhere, but without a good foundation, you will not go far," he said.

Dansuki also encouraged cross-party tolerance, noting that the gathering included supporters from APC, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party, united by friendship rather than political alignment.

He thanked attendees for their continued support and pledged to maintain open relationships with friends and associates, regardless of political differences.

When the Righteous Stay Away, Desperate Politicians Take Over, Says Akamkpa Chairman

CALABAR- The Chairman of Akamkpa Local Government Area, Hon. Chief Felix Akposi JSK, has warned that democracy becomes vulnerable when responsible and well-meaning citizens fail to participate in elections.

Chief Akposi issued the warning during the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) sensitisation Workshop held in Calabar, led by the SA Community Relations Hon. Chief Ada Charles and Community Relations Officers (CROs).

Speaking to community leaders, youths, and stakeholders, the council chairman said voter apathy is one of the biggest threats to credible elections, stressing that low turnout only empowers desperate politicians.
According to him, "When the righteous stay away, desperate politicians take over. If good people refuse to go and vote, you give room for those who want to manipulate the system. But when people come out in large numbers, nobody can hijack the process."

Chief Akposi encouraged eligible residents, especially young people and first-time voters, to seize the opportunity of the CVR exercise to register, update their details, and prepare for the forthcoming local government elections.

He commended the Governor's representatives for bringing the sensitisation campaign to the grassroots, describing it as a timely and strategic move to strengthen civic participation across the state.

The Akamkpa chairman also urged traditional rulers, community groups, and civil society organisations to support the mobilisation effort, saying the true will of the people can only prevail when citizens play their part.

Speaking earlier, Hon. Ada Charles said the Governor, Sen. Bassey Edet Otu, has given clear instructions for a more aggressive, community-focused mobilisation, especially in rural and hard-to-reach areas. She charged the CROs and ward officers to take the message beyond town halls and into streets, markets, farms, creeks and local settlements.

According to her, Cross River can no longer afford the low voter turnout that has been witnessed in previous elections.

"This is not the time for half commitment. His Excellency wants every eligible voter registered. Go back and mobilize your people. Make sure no community is left out," she said.

The INEC Public Affairs Officer, Mr Godwin Oki, gave a technical briefing on the CVR process, explaining the roles of registration officers, the structure of the exercise, transfer of voter cards, and provisions for persons living with disabilities. He encouraged communities to use the window of the CVR to update their details, correct errors, and register first-time voters.

Traditional rulers who spoke at the event praised the initiative but appealed that INEC bring registration points closer to the people, especially those living in riverine and difficult terrains, particularly in areas like Calabar South, Bakassi and other remote communities. Market women and youth representatives also pledged support, noting that increased civic participation will strengthen development at the grassroots.

CALABAR — In a rare display of transparency, accountability, and people-centered leadership, Hon. Augustine Edet, Councillor representing Ward 5 in Calabar Municipality, has rendered a comprehensive account of his one year in office, showcasing remarkable progress across key sectors of community development.

Guided by the People's First philosophy of His Excellency, Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu, and working in close partnership with the Mayor of Calabar Municipality, Rt. Hon. James Anam Okon, Hon. Edet has redefined grassroots representation through servant leadership, innovation, and inclusive governance.

At the heart of his performance is the Ward 5 Development Initiative (W5DI), a visionary, multi-sectoral plan focused on education, healthcare, infrastructure, empowerment, and environmental sustainability. This blueprint has become the foundation for the many tangible results Ward 5 residents now celebrate.

Education as a Cornerstone of Progress
As a representative of the people, Hon. Edet believes education is the bedrock of development in Ward 5. Within one year, he has facilitated the renovation of Ekorinim Primary School following a motion he sponsored in the Legislative Council and supported the near-completion of a new classroom block at Migrant Technical College, Ekorinim, executed by SUBEB and currently at 95% completion.

To tackle school dropouts and improve access to learning, he awarded over 34 scholarships to indigent pupils and students, distributed writing materials, and facilitated free JAMB registration for young school leavers under the Governor's Youth Empowerment Initiative.
He also sponsored motions to curb illegal trading activities within school premises, leading to Council interventions that protected the learning environment and secured school property.

Health and Community Well-being
Recognizing health as the foundation of community productivity, Hon. Edet sponsored motions for the renovation of the Ekorinim Health Centre, now billed for a total overhaul, and advocated for the rehabilitation of Diamond Health Centre to strengthen primary healthcare delivery.
Through his regular engagement with local health officers, he ensured consistent sanitation and maintenance of health facilities, interventions that have improved hygiene and access to essential medical services, especially for women and children.

Additionally, he provided direct financial and medication support to 15 residents to enable them access medical care, reflecting his compassionate and responsive leadership style.

Infrastructure Renewal and Market Development
Under his Ward 5 Development Initiative (W5DI), Hon. Edet prioritized the protection and development of public infrastructure. One of his most notable interventions was sponsoring a motion and petition that stopped illegal encroachment on the government-approved Ekorinim Model Market land, effectively safeguarding over 45,000 square meters of community property from private land grabbers.
He has also been at the forefront of advocacy for the construction of a modern Ekorinim Community Market, complete with standard stalls, drainage systems, solar lighting, public toilets, and waste disposal facilities.

Furthermore, he identified and recommended nine critical community roads for inclusion in the Municipality's development plan and has continued to engage authorities on the extension of streetlights to enhance safety and support nightlife businesses.

Environmental Sanitation and Peacebuilding
For twelve consecutive months, Hon. Edet has personally led the monthly environmental sanitation exercise across Ward 5, mobilizing residents, youth groups, and associations to participate actively in keeping the community clean.

His leadership extends beyond sanitation into peacebuilding and conflict resolution. He has mediated and resolved several youth-related disputes in Ekorinim, encouraged nonviolent grievance handling, and advocated for the establishment of vigilante groups and community policing to safeguard public facilities.
These actions have enhanced peace, safety, and civic discipline across Ward 5, making it one of the most stable wards within the Municipality.

Empowerment and Human Capital Development
True to his promise of inclusive representation, Hon. Edet has invested heavily in empowering his constituents. He has sponsored two youths for vocational training, one in driving and another in plumbing, to promote self-reliance and reduce unemployment.

He initiated a monthly widow-support scheme that provides stipends of ₦5,000 to several widows, extended small business grants to petty traders, and facilitated linkages for unemployed youths through the Agricultural Development Programme.
He also supported eight families with funeral assistance, demonstrating empathy and solidarity in times of loss.

I Still Carry the Scars of Fighting for Cross River: Ayade Reflects on Political Battles and Sacrifices

CALABAR - Former Governor of Cross River State, Senator Ben Ayade, has said he still carries the scars of the political battles he fought to protect the sovereignty and strategic interests of the state. Ayade, who governed the state from 2015 to 2023, made the remark in Calabar while addressing journalists shortly after arriving to attend the wedding ceremony of Governor Bassey Otu's son.  

Reflecting on his decision to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2021, the former governor said his action was not driven by personal ambition but by a deep concern for the state's political and economic survival.

"As a leader, I saw what was coming. The crystal ball was clear. Nigeria was moving in a direction where Cross River risked being isolated if we didn't align with the center," Ayade said.
"So I made a conscious decision to lead the state into the APC, not because it was convenient, but because it was necessary. I knew the battle would be tough, and I carry the scars of that battle till today."

The former governor described his administration's decision to "socket to the centre" as a move born out of foresight and patriotism. According to him, aligning with the federal government was the only way to safeguard the state's interests and ensure its continued relevance in national politics.

"Cross River is a state that has suffered marginalization and economic deprivation for years. I believed that aligning with the federal government would help us access more opportunities. That decision came with consequences, political opposition, betrayal, and misrepresentation, but I have no regrets," he said.

Ayade, who also represented Cross River North in the Senate before becoming governor, said his loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC remains unwavering.

"I was one of the first to openly endorse President Tinubu, even before the APC primaries. I said it then, if Tinubu could fix Lagos, he could fix Nigeria. I believed in his capacity, and I still do," he said.
"President Tinubu knows me well; our relationship predates his presidency. He understands my intentions, and I believe he will surprise this country with his leadership."

Ayade's remarks, which came in a calm but reflective tone, appeared to convey both a sense of pride and pain, pride in his political foresight, and pain from the challenges he faced while trying to reposition Cross River politically and his subsequent loss of his second attempt to the senate during the 2023 general election. 

Political analysts interpret his comments as a subtle reminder of his contributions to strengthening the APC's hold in the South-South and a sign that the former governor still holds significant political capital in the region.

Addressing the Mammoth crowd that trooped out to receive him at the airport, the ex-governor, popularly known as the digital governor of Cross River State, said he was in the state not for political reasons but to attend the wedding of the governor's son. Ayade, describing the Governor as the leader of the party in the state, added that in due time, he will surely visit the state for politics.  

Observers also note that Ayade's appearance in Calabar and his engagement with journalists mark a quiet political reawakening, one that could signal a renewed involvement in the state's affairs ahead of future political realignments.
As he put it himself, "I carry the scars, but I also carry the satisfaction that I did what was right for my people."

Jarigbe: Exodus Looms as PDP Cross River North Stakeholders Declare Support for Tinubu, Gov Otu

CALABAR – A sweeping political shift is gathering momentum in Cross River North senatorial district, as influential stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have signaled plans to defect en masse to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in solidarity with Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe. 

Recall that on October 22, 2025 Sen. Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, Senator representing Cross River North, had on October 22, 2025 visited Aso Rock Villa to officially inform President Bola Tinubu of his defection to the ruling party.

Jarigbe followed it up with a visit to Cross River State chairman of APC, Alphonsus Eba, Esq, also notifying him of his defection and readiness to work with the leadership to reposition the party in the northern senatorial district.

And in continuation of his consultation, Jarigbe convened a strategic meeting in Abuja with top PDP figures from the zone to review the political landscape and chart a new direction. 

The move, if finalized, is expected to significantly alter the political equation in the northern senatorial zone ahead of the next election cycle.

Discussions at the meeting held at in ROCKVIEW Hotel, Abuja on Tuesday, reportedly centered on aligning with what participants described as the "progressive direction" of the state under Governor Bassey Otu and the reform-driven agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Speaking at the meeting, Jarigbe siad he moved over to APC to assist President Bola Tinubu in repositioning the country for greater heights.

He said defecting to the ruling party will not stop him from empowering the constituents and embarking on people-oriented projects and to alleviate the sufferings of the zone, assuring the stakeholders of regular consultations and better days are ahead.

Speaking, the Cross River State PDP chairman, Venatius Ikem, Esq, commended Sen. Jarigbe for the bold step taken so far, promising to go back to the State Executive members for further consultations on the next line of action.

In a united front, the stakeholders pledged their support for Governor Otu's administration and President Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda. 

They further disclosed their intention to officially join the APC alongside Senator Jarigbe after wider consultations, describing the anticipated mass defection as a strategic realignment to give Cross River North a stronger voice in both state and national politics.

Present at the meeting include Hon. Godwin Offiono, representing Ogoja/Yala Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Chief Austin Edibe; former Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Tom Ogar and Mike Aniah, Esq; Dr. DornKlamz Enamhe, Dr. Paul Ibiala, Hon Peter Ignodor and several other party stalwarts.

Political observers describe this development as a major blow to the PDP in Cross River, especially in the North where the party once held an unshaken grip.
