Former Senator representing the Cross River South Senatorial District in the 8th and 9th National Assembly, Gershom Bassey, has broken his silence on the reasons behind his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing deepening internal crises and unresolved divisions within the party.

Bassey formally tendered his resignation in a letter dated March 12, 2026, addressed to the leadership of Ward 9 in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State.

In the letter, the former lawmaker described his decision as painful, noting that he had been a founding member of the party and had committed enormous resources and personal effort over the years to build and strengthen its structures in the state and across the country.

According to him, the persistent internal crisis, deep divisions and unresolved conflicts within the party made it increasingly difficult for him to remain hopeful about its future.

"The continued split within the party structures has weakened its unity and eroded the values upon which it was originally founded," he stated.

Bassey lamented that the most recent developments within the party had further demonstrated that it was drifting away from the ideals that once united its members and gave it direction as a formidable political platform.

"What makes this even more painful is the apparent unwillingness of party elders and leaders to genuinely fight for its soul and restore the discipline, unity and vision that once defined it," he added.

The former gubernatorial aspirant expressed disappointment that what he described as a once great democratic institution that embodied the hopes and aspirations of millions of Nigerians had been reduced to what he termed a caricature of its former self.

Bassey maintained that stepping aside was a matter of principle, stressing that he could not continue to remain part of a system that no longer reflected the values and principles he stood for.

Despite announcing his exit from the PDP, the former senator did not disclose his next political destination, leaving political observers speculating about his possible alignment as political activities gradually build towards the next electoral cycle in Cross River State.

Political analysts believe his resignation could trigger fresh political realignments in the state, given his influence in the southern senatorial district and his long-standing role within the party.

C'River Govt Drags High Net Worth Individuals, Firms to Court Over ₦11 Billion Tax Liabilities

CALABAR – The Cross River Internal Revenue Service (CRIRS) has initiated court proceedings against several High Net Worth Individuals and corporate organizations over outstanding tax liabilities totaling more than ₦11 billion owed to the state government.

The enforcement action, driven by the Service's Legal Services and Enforcement Department, targets taxpayers who allegedly ignored multiple notices and failed to settle their statutory tax obligations despite repeated assessments issued by the tax authority.

According to the Service, the cases cover several tax categories including Personal Income Tax (PIT), Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE), Withholding Tax (WHT), Direct Assessment, Business Premises Levy, Development Levy, Rental Income Tax, and other statutory payments due to the state.

The legal action forms part of CRIRS' intensified effort to recover revenue owed to the state and strengthen compliance within the tax system.

Speaking on the development, the Chairman of CRIRS, Prince Edwin Okon, emphasized that the Service had exhausted all administrative measures before resorting to legal action.

He explained that the affected individuals and companies had failed to respond to several tax assessments and official notices served on them by the agency.

According to him, the Service will now rely on the relevant provisions of existing tax laws, including the 2025 Tax Reform Act, to ensure that all revenues due to the state are fully recovered.

Prince Okon further urged High Net Worth Individuals and other taxpayers across the state to promptly regularize their tax status and fulfill their obligations to avoid facing similar sanctions.

He reiterated the commitment of the tax authority to enforcing a fair, transparent, and efficient tax system that will support sustainable development and strengthen internally generated revenue for Cross River State.

The move, observers say, signals a renewed determination by CRIRS to enhance voluntary tax compliance while protecting the integrity of the state's revenue administration framework.

CALABAR – The Cross River Internal Revenue Service (CRIRS) has commenced a two-day strategic session aimed at strengthening revenue generation and enhancing investor confidence in Cross River State.

The session, which began on Wednesday in Calabar, brings together Directors, Unit Heads, Assessment Authorities, and Motor Licensing Authorities of the Service. The meeting is designed to review current revenue strategies and develop new approaches that will improve internally generated revenue (IGR) for the state.

Speaking on the theme "Growing Cross River State Revenue: Building Investors' Confidence and Leveraging on Gains of the New Tax Law," the leadership of CRIRS emphasized the importance of strategic planning, collaboration, and innovation in strengthening the state's revenue base.

Pure Water Distributors in Calabar Threaten Indefinite Strike Over Multiple Ticket Levies

CALABAR – Distributors of sachet water, popularly known as pure water, in Calabar Metropolis have threatened to embark on an indefinite strike over what they described as excessive daily ticket levies imposed on them by revenue agents in the state.

The distributors, who operate with tricycles and delivery vehicles across Calabar and its environs, say the cumulative daily charges have become unbearable and far exceed the approved levy earlier announced by the Cross River State Government.

Speaking with journalists in Calabar on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, Mr. Desmond Okra, who spoke on behalf of the affected distributors, said the group is already mobilising its members for a shutdown of operations unless government authorities intervene.

According to him, distributors are compelled to pay several levies daily to different revenue collectors. These include a Daily Operational Toll of N200, an Economic Development Levy of N300, a Commerce Development Levy of N200, an Air Pollution/Climate Change Levy of N300, a CRTRA Daily Operational Toll of N200, a Delivery Tricycle Fee of N300, and a Ministry of Environment 2026 Ecology Levy of N300.

He explained that the charges amount to N1,800 per day, which he described as unfair when compared to the N500 daily levy recently approved for mini-bus and tricycle operators by the Governor of Cross River State, Bassey Edet Otu, following protests by transport operators last week.

"We are not against paying government levies, but the number of tickets we are forced to buy daily is too much. It is affecting our business and making it difficult for us to survive," Okra said.

He added that the distributors are demanding that the government review the charges and include them in the same concession granted to mini-bus and commercial tricycle operators.

However, when contacted, the Chairman of the Association of Table Water Producers in Cross River State (ATWAP), Mr. Maurice Etim Okon, said he was unaware of the planned strike action.

Okon, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Marian Table Water, noted that registered members of the association are exempted from the levies in question.

According to him, the association maintains a cordial working relationship with revenue agents in the state and has taken steps to address the concerns of its members.

Meanwhile, efforts to obtain a response from the Cross River State Internal Revenue Service were unsuccessful as officials of the agency could not be reached as of the time of filing this report.

The distributors warned that failure by the authorities to address their grievances may lead to a disruption in the supply of sachet water across Calabar and neighbouring communities.

C'River Assembly Suspends Hon. Ovat Agbor Indefinitely Over Alleged Violent Conduct

CALABAR – The Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended the member representing Obubra I State Constituency, Dickson Ovat Agbor, indefinitely over alleged violent conduct deemed inconsistent with the standards of the legislature.

The decision was reached during plenary after a motion moved by Davies Etta and seconded by Francis Bassey Asuquo.

Presenting the motion, lawmakers condemned the alleged incident involving Hon. Agbor, describing the reported behaviour as unacceptable and contrary to the ethical expectations placed on members of the Assembly.

Following deliberations, the House resolved to suspend the lawmaker from all legislative activities indefinitely.

As part of the resolution, the Assembly also approved the establishment of an investigative committee to examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident and submit its findings to the House for further legislative action.

In compliance with the directive of the Assembly, Hon. Agbor was subsequently escorted out of the chamber by the Sergeant-at-Arms.

Speaking on the development, the Speaker of the House, Elvert Ayambem, reiterated the Assembly's commitment to maintaining discipline, dignity, and institutional integrity within the legislature.

He stressed that members of the House must conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the confidence and mandate given to them by their constituents.

The suspension will remain in effect pending the outcome of the investigation by the committee constituted by the House.

Police, NUJ Forge Stronger Alliance to Combat Fake News, Insecurity in C’River Ukorebi Esien | February 18, 2026

CALABAR –The Nigeria Police Force, Cross River State Command, and the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Cross River State Council, have agreed to deepen collaboration aimed at combating fake news and strengthening security across the state.

The resolution was reached during a courtesy visit by the Command's Public Relations Office to the executive members of the NUJ in Calabar, where both parties underscored the critical role of credible information in maintaining peace and public order.

Speaking during the engagement, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) ASP Sunday Etokpa described the media as indispensable partners in policing, stressing that the police cannot succeed in any community without working closely with journalists.

"In the State, in the Federation, it will be unwise for the police to sideline the media. If we do not work pari-passu with the NUJ, we are going to fail," he said. "The press is key. The media is key."

He explained that within his first month in office, the Command had established a structured communication platform bringing together verified journalists from major print, electronic, and online media houses to ensure timely dissemination of accurate information.

According to him, the initiative has already helped in correcting false narratives and curbing panic often triggered by unverified social media posts.

"Right now, we have plenty of bloggers who just pick up their phones and circulate wrong information, creating tension and panic. If we channel information through verified sources like the NUJ, we can correct those wrong narratives quickly," he noted.

The PPRO disclosed that the platform currently includes nearly 40 journalists and has improved the speed and accuracy of official responses to security incidents across the state.

In her remarks, Chairman of the NUJ, Comrade Archibong Bassey commended the Command for its proactive approach, describing the relationship as "top-notch" and unprecedented in recent times.

She, however, urged the police to sustain the momentum, warning that delayed responses to media inquiries often fuel speculation and misinformation.

"When we need clarification and we don't get a response, the story must go. And once speculation sets in, there is trouble. So please remain on top of your game," the NUJ leader said.

Journalists present also emphasized the importance of follow-up briefings on ongoing investigations, noting that many cases are announced as 'under investigation' without subsequent updates.

Responding, the PPRO assured the union of continuous engagement and pledged to provide updates on sensitive matters, including recent security concerns that generated public anxiety.

Both parties agreed that sustained collaboration between security agencies and the media is essential for crisis management, responsible reporting, and public confidence.

Ikom APC Congress Stalled as Returning Officer Absconds with Election Materials

IKOM — The Chapter Congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) scheduled to hold in Ikom Local Government Area on Saturday was abruptly stalled following allegations that the designated Returning Officers absconded with election materials.

Stakeholders in Ikom LGA informed our reporter that the Congress did not hold, contrary to reports circulating in some quarters. They alleged that the Returning Officer, Hon. Abubakar Efoli, alongside two Supervisors, Mr. Okoi Ojah and Barr. Bassey Asuquo, left the venue under unclear circumstances while consultations were ongoing.

According to party stakeholders, discussions were being held at the Divisional Police Officer's office over a harmonized consensus list when the officials reportedly exited the premises without notice. Their sudden disappearance, sources said, created confusion among party faithful and disrupted the planned exercise.

It was further alleged that the officials had earlier collected Congress materials from the party's State Secretariat in Calabar before proceeding to Ikom. However, they were accused of failing to follow established party guidelines for conducting the Congress, including coordinating with local authorities to ensure adequate security arrangements.

Some stakeholders also claimed that the Returning Officer informed them he had been instructed by the State Secretariat not to conduct the Congress in Ikom LGA. This claim has not been independently verified as of the time of filing this report.

Reacting to the development, the Executive Chairman of Ikom LGA, Hon. Pst. Mercy Nsor, assured party members that the leadership of the party under the Governor of Cross River State, Bassey Edet Otu, remains committed to protecting the collective interest of party faithful in the area.

She urged members to remain calm and law-abiding, expressing confidence that the party's state and national leadership would address the situation appropriately.

As of press time, there has been no official statement from the State Party Secretariat regarding the allegations. Party members in Ikom have called for clarity and swift action to prevent further tension and to ensure the integrity of the party's internal processes.

C’River Businessman Applauds Tinubu, Otu Over Oil Well Interventions

CALABAR — A prominent businessman in Cross River State, High Chief Dr. Henry Onwe, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Bassey Edet Otu for what he described as decisive steps toward restoring the state's oil wells.

Onwe, who is Chairman of the Cross River State Businessmen's Forum, made the remarks in a press statement issued in Calabar on Thursday. He said the President's decision to set up an inter-agency committee to review the oil wells issue has brought renewed hope to the people of the state.

According to him, many Cross Riverians have long felt deprived of their economic rights, and the recent actions by the Federal Government show a commitment to fairness and justice.

"The effort the President is taking has endeared him to millions of Cross Riverians and has given them hope that he is committed to their welfare," Onwe stated.

He explained that the oil wells dispute dates back to a July 10, 2012 ruling by the Supreme Court of Nigeria. He said the court struck out Cross River State's appeal and referred the matter to relevant federal agencies, including the National Boundary Commission, the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation, and the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, for proper determination.

Onwe noted that the Supreme Court did not hand over the oil wells to any other state but asked the appropriate authorities to determine their status.

He said the inter-agency committee recently inaugurated by the President carried out detailed maritime and geological assessments. According to him, the committee discovered 188 additional wellheads and 41 shared reservoirs extending from the Cross River continental shelf towards its boundary with Cameroon.

He added that the National Boundary Commission has independently reaffirmed Cross River's coastal status and its access to the Atlantic Ocean through the Cross River Estuary.

Onwe expressed optimism that with the submission of the committee's final report to the Chairman of the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission, the matter would soon be resolved in favour of justice.

"The restoration of our oil wells will be a demonstration of equity and fairness. It will also improve derivation revenue and support development in our state," he said.

The businessman also praised Governor Otu for what he described as steady leadership and commitment to development. He said the governor has continued to pursue peace, infrastructure development and economic growth since assuming office.

Onwe called on political stakeholders across party lines to support the governor's efforts, adding that the oil wells intervention shows strong collaboration between the state and federal governments.

He appealed to President Tinubu to give final approval that will ensure Cross River receives what he described as its rightful economic endowment.

Ikom APC Congress: Stakeholders Invoke Gov. Bassey Otu’s No-Imposition Pledge, Insist on Zoning Patten

 

CALABAR – Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ikom Local Government Area of Cross River State have called for strict adherence to the party's longstanding zoning arrangement ahead of the forthcoming Local Government and Ward Congresses, invoking Governor Bassey Edet Otu's public pledge not to impose candidates.

In a press statement issued under the banner of "Concerned Stakeholders of Ikom LGA," party leaders emphasized that Ikom's internal political stability has, over the years, been sustained through a clearly defined rotation principle between the area's two constituencies, Constituency One and Constituency Two.

According to the statement, the established understanding within the party provides that when the APC Chapter Chairman emerges from Constituency Two, the Local Government Council Chairman is produced from Constituency One, and vice versa in the next cycle.

"This arrangement has preserved unity, fairness, and inclusion within our party structure in Ikom," the stakeholders stated. "It is not merely a political convenience but a tested formula that has guaranteed balance and prevented marginalization."

Currently, Constituency One is producing the Council Chairman, while Constituency Two holds the position of APC Chapter Chairman. The stakeholders argued that in line with the zoning tradition, the forthcoming congress should produce the next Chapter Chairman from Constituency One to maintain the rotational balance and prepare the ground for the Council Chairmanship to rotate to Constituency Two in the next electoral cycle.

The group warned that any attempt to disrupt the arrangement could create avoidable tension within the party and undermine cohesion ahead of the 2027 general elections.

"Respecting this zoning tradition is not about individuals," the statement read. "It is about protecting unity, mutual respect, and the collective political future of Ikom. Any deviation may breed distrust and weaken our electoral strength."

The stakeholders also addressed reports of a directive that a percentage of Chapter Chairmen across the state may be replaced, cautioning against interpreting such directives in a manner that would unsettle Ikom's internal equilibrium.

"Replacement, where necessary, can still occur within the framework of our established rotation principle," they noted.

Significantly, the group referenced Governor Otu's recent declaration at the Calabar International Conference Centre, where he assured party faithful that he would not impose candidates in the forthcoming congresses.

Quoting the Governor's words, "I will not impose any candidate," the stakeholders urged party leaders at all levels to ensure that the congress process in Ikom reflects that commitment to internal democracy and fairness.

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission Sunday formally dismissed reports suggesting that a conclusive determination has been made on the ownership and reallocation of disputed oil and gas wells between oil-producing states.

According to the Commission, the inter-agency verification exercise remains ongoing, with draft findings still undergoing technical review and validation. The process involves collaboration with the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), the National Boundary Commission (NBC), and the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation (OSGoF).

Bassey Akiba, has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the media as a tool for unity, peace, and national development as Nigeria joins the global community to mark World Broadcast Day 2026.

In a statement issued to commemorate the celebration, themed "Radio and Artificial Intelligence: AI is a tool, not a voice," the federal lawmaker emphasized the enduring relevance of radio in Nigeria's democratic and social landscape.

He described radio as one of the most accessible and trusted platforms for millions of Nigerians, particularly those in rural and underserved communities. According to him, the medium continues to play a vital role in informing citizens, preserving culture, promoting civic participation, and disseminating critical public service information.

Akiba noted that while technological advancements, especially artificial intelligence, are transforming the broadcasting industry, they must be adopted responsibly and ethically.

"The theme of this year's celebration reminds us that artificial intelligence is a tool designed to support and enhance human creativity and judgment. It cannot replace the human voice that builds trust, empathy, and understanding within our communities," he said.

The lawmaker commended broadcasters, journalists, and media practitioners across the country for upholding professional standards and ethical practices despite the rapidly evolving media environment. He acknowledged their resilience and dedication to ensuring that Nigerians remain well-informed and engaged in national discourse.

He further urged stakeholders in the media sector to leverage innovation to expand access to information while preserving the authenticity and credibility that define quality broadcasting.

"As we celebrate World Broadcast Day 2026, we must continue to strengthen radio and other broadcast platforms as instruments of democracy, inclusion, and peaceful coexistence. The media remains a powerful vehicle for fostering unity and sustainable development across our nation," Akiba stated.

World Broadcast Day is observed annually to highlight the significance of broadcasting, particularly radio, in promoting dialogue, development, and social cohesion worldwide.

Screening Exercise for Fallen Soldiers’ Children Rescheduled Nationwide

CALABAR  – The Nigerian Army has announced the rescheduling of its nationwide screening and verification exercise for children of deceased personnel who died in active service under the Nigerian Army Education Sponsorship Scheme for the 2025/2026 academic session.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters 13 Brigade Nigerian Army, Major Yemi Sokoya, the Army disclosed that the exercise, earlier scheduled to hold from February 2 to March 6, 2026, across various geopolitical zones within Divisions and designated formations, will now take place from February 9 to March 13, 2026.

The statement explained that the adjustment was necessary to ensure a seamless, transparent, and well-coordinated screening and verification process for all qualified beneficiaries nationwide.

According to the Army, the screening exercise within the 82 Division Area of Responsibility, which covers formations under the Division including 13 Brigade Nigerian Army, will be conducted at the Headquarters 82 Division in Enugu from February 14 to 17, 2026.

"All eligible beneficiaries within the Division's area of responsibility are to report at the designated venue on the stipulated dates," the statement read.

Specifically, beneficiaries residing in Cross River State and other states under the 82 Division have been directed to take note of the revised dates and present themselves at the Headquarters 82 Division, Enugu, for the exercise.

Parents, guardians, and beneficiaries have also been advised to come along with all relevant documents as previously directed to facilitate the verification process.

The Nigerian Army reiterated its commitment to the welfare and educational advancement of the children of its fallen heroes, noting that the Education Sponsorship Scheme remains one of the key initiatives designed to support families of personnel who paid the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.

The Army urged all concerned stakeholders to be guided accordingly by the new schedule.

Don’t Pay Tax in Cash or Into Private Accounts, IRS Warns Taxpayers

CALABAR — The Cross River Internal Revenue Service (CRIRS) has issued a stern warning to taxpayers to stop paying taxes in cash or into private accounts, insisting that all revenue must be remitted only through official government-designated channels to ensure compliance, proper record-keeping and enforcement.

The warning was delivered by Prince Edwin Okon, PhD, Executive Chairman of CRIRS, during a public address where he stressed that every taxpayer must have a valid Tax Identification Number (Tax ID) and must make payments only into government revenue accounts. Payments made to individuals or company accounts outside the official system will not be captured in government records, which could expose taxpayers to enforcement action.

Dr. Okon explained that just as a bank transaction only updates one's statement when it is correctly posted, tax records with the government are only updated when funds are lodged in the correct government account with a valid Tax ID. He warned that taxpayers who deposit funds into the wrong accounts "will pay twice" because their tax information would remain unupdated at the service. He also vowed to pursue any consultant who collects taxes into personal or corporate accounts, saying such individuals will be blacklisted and reported to security agencies for appropriate action.

This clarion call builds on recent reforms implemented by the CRIRS under the state government's revenue modernization agenda. From January 1, 2026, the service began cashless tax operations, directing all tax payments to digital platforms or bank deposits to designated government revenue accounts and strictly prohibiting cash collections or personal account transfers. 

The cashless policy, which took effect under newly enacted tax reform acts, aims to enhance revenue service delivery, reduce multiple taxation, and eliminate revenue leakages. Under the reforms, revenue consultants were directed to cease issuing new tax assessments until full compliance with the law is ensured. 

Government sources and previous media reports have also noted the state's broader efforts to combat tax evasion and improve compliance. The Cross River State Government has repeatedly warned taxpayers to avoid revenue payments to unauthorized accounts, describing such practices as contrary to financial regulations and harmful to the integrity of the tax system. 

CRIRS has also been active in enforcing compliance and cracking down on illicit tax collection practices. Earlier enforcement operations uncovered illegal revenue agents issuing fraudulent receipts and extorting payments outside official channels, prompting arrests and further regulatory action.

Gov Otu Unveils VOSEP to Equip Youths, Women with Market-Ready Skills

CALABAR. – In a strategic move to translate governance into tangible opportunities for citizens, the Cross River State Government has unveiled the Vocational Skills Empowerment Programme (VOSEP), a comprehensive initiative aimed at equipping youths and women with market-ready skills for sustainable livelihoods.

The programme, which aligns with the People First vision of Governor Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, is designed to strengthen human capital development, promote inclusive growth, and stimulate economic productivity across the state.

VOSEP is being implemented through the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Local Content, Ambassador Awatt Caleb, who described the initiative as a deliberate investment in the productive capacity of Cross Riverians. According to him, the programme prioritises hands-on, competency-based training that responds directly to current labour market needs.

Beneficiaries, drawn from the state's 18 Local Government Areas, will undergo an intensive six-month training programme structured to build technical competence, entrepreneurial discipline, and financial responsibility. The initiative targets both employability and enterprise development, positioning participants to either secure jobs or establish viable businesses.

The skills offered under VOSEP cut across key economic sectors and include ICT, graphics design and digital printing, corporate branding, cinematography, electrical installation, tailoring and fashion design, driving and logistics, plumbing, hairdressing and styling, catering services, leather works and shoemaking, dry cleaning and laundry services, as well as welding and fabrication. The wide scope of the programme is intended to ensure inclusivity while aligning skills acquisition with market demand.

Beyond vocational training, VOSEP seeks to instil a mindset shift among participants, encouraging youths and women to transition from job seekers to value creators capable of generating employment and stimulating economic activities within their communities.

The programme is also expected to build a pool of skilled manpower to support Cross River State's transition into a modern, technology-driven and industrially competitive economy. By empowering beneficiaries to earn sustainable incomes and contribute meaningfully to society, the initiative reinforces the administration's commitment to self-reliance and economic resilience.

Stakeholders Back Re-Election of APC Chairmen in Seven LGAs

CALABAR – Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State have thrown their weight behind the re-election of incumbent chapter chairmen in seven local government areas ahead of the party's forthcoming congresses.

The affected local government areas are Boki, Bekwarra, Bakassi, Abi, Ogoja, Yala and Obanliku. The chairmen endorsed for another term include Chief Engr. Kelvin Njong (Boki), Comrade Odama Thomas Odama JP (Bekwarra), Sir Gerald Esin (Bakassi), Pst Joshua Igboke (Abi), Paul Ogeh Adinye (Ogoja), Ogar Solomon (Yala) and Pst George Ejikang (Obanliku).

The endorsements came from party leaders, elected officials, political appointees and other stakeholders, who, in separate interviews, said retaining the current leadership would guarantee continuity, stability and unity within the party at the grassroots level.

According to them, the incumbent chairmen have demonstrated commitment, loyalty and effective leadership, and possess the grassroots reach required to strengthen the APC ahead of future elections. They added that the chairmen represent a crop of emerging leaders who have grown within the party structure and should be allowed to consolidate on the gains already recorded in their respective LGAs.

Speaking on the Bakassi endorsement, a party stakeholder, Chief Emmanuel Nyong, described the chapter chairman, Sir Gerald Esin, as dedicated and loyal to the party. He said Esin's re-election would promote unity and ensure continuity in Bakassi, noting his consistent support for the administration of Governor Bassey Otu.

In Bekwarra, Chief Emmanuel Ogbang said stakeholders were overwhelmingly in support of Comrade Odama Thomas Odama JP for a second term, describing him as a bridge-builder who has fostered harmony between elders and younger politicians. He added that Odama's experience and administrative capacity have helped stabilise the party in the area.

Endorsing the Abi chapter chairman, Pst Joshua Igboke, party stalwart Justin Elemi said the local government needed a leader with strong grassroots appeal, stressing that there was no justification for changing a winning team at a critical political period.

In Ogoja, Chief Abang Abang said stakeholders were solidly behind the re-election of Paul Ogeh Adinye, citing his loyalty to party leadership and experience in party administration.

Similarly, a stakeholder from Obudu Urban, Stephen Adie, said the re-election of Pst George Ejikang as Obanliku chapter chairman was necessary, noting that the incumbent has remained steadfast with the APC despite past opposition pressure.

In Boki, stakeholders earlier endorsed Chief Engr. Kelvin Njong, who also serves as Chairman of the Forum of APC Chairmen and a commissioner in the State Forestry Commission. Njong was endorsed alongside the 11 ward councillors of the local government.

The endorsement exercise in Boki was led by the member representing Boki Constituency II in the Cross River State House of Assembly, Hillary Bisong, alongside the member representing Boki Constituency I, Philip Bette Obi, and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters, Chief Jeke Enya.

Speaking on behalf of stakeholders, Bisong, who is also the Chief Whip of the State House of Assembly, said the decision was based on Njong's ability to promote unity, cohesion and a stable party structure across the local government area.

The stakeholders expressed confidence that the re-election of the incumbent chairmen would strengthen the APC ahead of its congresses and position the party for sustained success in Cross River State.

Hon. Victor Abang Bridges Representation Gap with Mid-Term Constituency Briefing in Calabar

CALABAR – Hon. Victor Abang, Member representing Ikom/Boki Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has reaffirmed his commitment to accountable and people-centred representation with a mid-term constituency town hall meeting held on Monday, February 9, 2026, in Calabar.

The engagement, which brought together constituents from Ikom and Boki residing in Calabar, provided a platform for the lawmaker to present a comprehensive scorecard of his legislative activities, constituency projects, oversight functions, and interventions over the past two and a half years.

Addressing the gathering, Hon. Abang said the briefing was deliberately organized to bridge the gap that often exists between elected officials and the electorate after elections.

"Most people only see their representatives during elections. After that, you don't hear from them again. I decided to close that gap by coming back in between elections to tell you what we have done so far and to also listen to you," he said.

He stressed that the forum was also designed to enhance public understanding of how government and legislative processes work, noting that misinformation and criticism on social media often stem from limited knowledge of legislative responsibilities.

 "People should ask questions when they don't understand what we are doing. This is why meetings like this are important, so we can explain our actions and be held accountable," Abang added.

Legislative Interventions and Motions

Highlighting his legislative contributions, Hon. Abang recalled that one of his earliest actions on the floor of the House was a motion to secure over 10,000 hectares of land in the Danare axis of Boki, following threats from cross-border aggressors. He said the motion led to the intervention of an ad-hoc committee of the House and helped safeguard the affected communities.

He also disclosed that he sponsored the bill for the establishment of a Federal Medical Centre in Boki, noting that the bill has passed the House of Representatives and is awaiting concurrence by the Senate.

According to him, the absence of a tertiary health facility in Boki has continued to expose residents to avoidable risks, as the nearest such hospitals are several hours away.

Other legislative initiatives highlighted include:

* A bill to establish the Okwangwo National Park as a full division to boost employment and ensure equitable allocation of resources.

* Motions addressing cross-border security threats, including the deployment of troops to safeguard communities and curb external incursions.

* A motion on recurring elephant invasions destroying farmlands and homes in parts of Boki, which he said has drawn national and international attention to the affected communities.

* Sponsorship of bills on labour reforms, tax enforcement mechanisms, agriculture and forestry funding, immigration services, and the proposed Federal University of Entrepreneurship Studies in Ikom.

Constituency Projects and Empowerment

Hon. Abang presented an extensive list of constituency projects and empowerment programmes executed across wards in Ikom and Boki, including the construction and renovation of classroom blocks, installation of solar-powered streetlights, grading of rural roads, provision of boreholes, and upgrading of health facilities.

He revealed that over 1,000 constituents have been enrolled as beneficiaries of the Federal Government's Conditional Cash Transfer Programme, while another 1,000 were captured under the Renewed Hope Nano Presidential Grant.

The lawmaker also disclosed that hundreds of youths, women, artisans, and persons with disabilities have benefitted from skills acquisition programmes, grants, agricultural inputs, and other empowerment initiatives facilitated through federal agencies such as NDE, ITF, NEMA, and NDDC.

Oversight and Global Engagements

Beyond constituency-level interventions, Hon. Abang highlighted his oversight roles and international engagements, including participation in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meetings in Geneva, Switzerland, and other legislative delegations aimed at strengthening Nigeria's institutional capacity and global partnerships.

Call for Continued Engagement

The lawmaker assured constituents that more projects are captured in the 2025 budget and are at various stages of procurement and execution, stressing that some are awaiting commissioning while others will commence soon.

"We are not done yet. Representation is a continuous process, and I remain committed to deepening development across Ikom and Boki," he said.

Participants at the town hall commended the initiative, describing it as a rare demonstration of transparency and responsiveness, while also using the opportunity to raise questions and make suggestions on priority needs within the constituency.

The meeting concluded with a renewed call for sustained dialogue between elected officials and citizens as a means of strengthening democracy and effective representation.

Ministry of Youth Breaks Silence on NYCN/NYC Supremacy Tussle

CALABAR — The Cross River State Ministry of Youth Development has broken its silence on the lingering supremacy tussle between the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) and the Nigerian Youth Congress (NYC), reaffirming government's official position on youth leadership and recognition in the state.

The Commissioner for Youth Development, Barr. Ijom Ukam, made this clarification while responding to questions from journalists shortly after the 2026 NYCN Solemn Assembly, held on Saturday at the Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu Youth House, Calabar.

The supremacy dispute, which has generated intense debate across social and traditional media, revolves around competing claims by both organisations to the status of umbrella youth body in Cross River State.

In December 2025, the Nigerian Youth Congress (NYC) declared all activities of the NYCN illegal within the state, alleging that the youth council had been suspended at the national level and stripped of its Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration. The group further warned youths against participating in NYCN programmes and events.

In response, the NYCN Cross River chapter, cautioned the public against what it described as "fake youth bodies," insisting that it remained the legally recognised umbrella organisation for youths and accusing rival groups of misleading the public.

The crisis had earlier drawn the attention of youth stakeholders in July, 2025, with calls for restraint, constitutional adherence, and dialogue to prevent further fragmentation of the youth constituency in the state.

Speaking to journalists, Barr. Ukam explained that the Ministry recently convened a meeting involving leaders of the youth bodies to address the matter administratively and clarify government's position.

According to him, the Ministry of Youth Development operates strictly on official correspondence and directives from the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, stressing that no such directive has been received mandating the recognition of any youth body other than the NYCN as the umbrella youth organisation in Cross River State.

"As of today, we do not have any official communication from the Federal Ministry of Youth Development directing us to recognise any other youth body. Until such correspondence is received, the status quo remains," the commissioner stated.

He added that government remains law-abiding and will comply with any future directive issued by the appropriate federal authority, noting that the Federal Ministry of Youth Development usually communicates such decisions formally to states for domestication.

Barr Ukam who thanked the leadership of the youth council  for keeping up with excellence, sir each time he visits the youth house he sees, class me excellence. Adding that the youth council have grown in maturity and packaging. He also expressed satisfaction with the solemn assembly put together by the youth council, believing that seeking the face of God in the beginning of the year will set the council on the parth of success this year. 

"Each time I come in here, I see  class and excellence, the youth council has been organized, and it's a thing of joy to me as the Honorable Commissioner for youths Cross River State. The solemn assembly is a spiritual exercise that will set the council on the parth of success this year." He said

The youth commissioner, further advised all youth organisations operating in the state to take steps to regularise and validate their legal status, stressing that the ministry has no prejudice against any group but must be guided by due process.

The commissioner said the Ministry will issue an official statement next week to formally restate its position and guide youth groups and the general public.

The clarification is expected to ease tensions within the youth space and prevent misinformation, while reinforcing government's commitment to institutional order, unity, and constructive youth engagement in Cross River State.
