| Commissioner Asu Okang not against cultism |
The Cross River State Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr. Asu Okang has said that he is not against cultism.
The commissioner
drummed his support for cultism while addressing students at a public lecture
organized by the Students Union Government of the University of Calabar, as
part of the activities to mark its 42nd Students Week celebration.
“I am not against cultism because it offers
you an opportunity to associate and make friends, what I am against is the
raising of arms against each other,” Mr. Okang said.

This is coming just few weeks after Chief Okoi
Obono-Obla SA on prosecution to the President accused the state governor of harboring
cultist in his cabinet.
The statement by the Honorable commissioner caused a stir in the crowd, causing mixed reactions from the cheering crowd who were suprised that such words could proceed out the mouth of a government official.

Mr. Okang went on to disclose that the state
in partnership with European Union (EU) funded Arms Proliferation Program is
ongoing to rid the state of unlawful possession and use of arms.
He encouraged youths who indulge in criminal
activities like armed robbery, gangsterism, and kidnapping to key into the
ECOWAS-EU Small Arms and Light Weapons Disarmament Project and surrender their
weapons to enable government help them get sustainable lives.
Also, he appealed to the youths not to
subject themselves to life in the creeks that has no value, but suffering and
fear.

TDN had reported on its August 1st
post that the Presidential Committee in Small Arms and Light Weapons
(PRESCOMSALW) recently launched the disarmament program of the Economic
Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) and the European Union (EU) in the
West African sub region.
What is actually shocking and revealing about
the commissioner’s support for cultism is that this is coming just few weeks
after Chief Okoi Obono-Obla SA prosecution to the President accused the state
governor of harboring cultist in his cabinet.
Could chief Obla be correct? Can we say that
Chief Obla has been vindicated by the commissioner’s statement? Are they more
in Ayade’s cabinet that supports the game? Is their principal in the know of
all these?
These and many more questions are what TDN seeks
answers to.
