Saturday, 28th 2018 saw Rovers FC of Calabar played host to their counterpart Delta Force FC, Asaba in a first leg fixture of the Nigerian National League with the home team beating their visitors 4 goals to 2 goals.
The match which held at UJ Esuene Sports Stadium kicked off with a fine weather as Rovers FC celebrated the first-half victory with 3 goals to nothing.
The match, rumored to be poorly officiated saw the tempo and atmosphere changed for Rovers FC in the second 45 minutes of play as the referee awarded two controversial penalty kicks against Rovers FC but the aggressive Rovers were not deterred as the netted yet another goal bringing the scoreline to 4-2
Fans and spectators who believed the Center referee was been biased were seen assaulting the center referee at the end of the match, but luckily he was rescued by about 10 policemen.
"This is how we get treated always. Just imagine if this happens in our home, how will away match be, but we will handle this the official way"? The General Manager of Rovers FC who appeared disappointed was heard lamenting.
With their
performance, the Calabar Rovers are tipped to get back into the Nigerian
Professional Football League (NPFL) should they continue with this same spirit
as they are beginning to prove themselves and sending a fiercely trenching
message to their opponents.
