Chairman of the newly constituted Taskforce on Refuse Evacuation and Cleanliness, Mr. Eric Anderson has assured Cross Riverians that, Calabar, the state capital can be greener and cleaner should residents partner with his committee to maintain a clean and safe environment especially in obeying state laws as it concerns the environment.
Speaking in Calabar, Anderson who is the immediate past commissioner for Culture and Tourism Development in Cross River State, clarify the air that the proposed statewide environmental sanitation is not scheduled to hold this month, as missconceived by some persons, rather, the event is slated for next month, precisely on the 27th of July 2019.
He stated that the committee decided to give citizens at least a month notice so necessary preparations and arrangements can be put in place to avoid clashes with personal events and occasions.
While informing that the proposed sanitation will be a one off event, Anderson said the committee will have the privilege of assessing the process before deciding if the Environmental sanitation will be a regular event.
Anderson who pleaded with members of the public to corporate with his committee and ensure the state returns back to its green and clean status, spoke on the need for members of the public to cabbage their attitude towards waste disposal in the state, the Chairman called on residents in the state and to cooperate with the Committee to achieve it's mandate of working to ensure that Cross River state remains Clean and free of refuse, and to maintain it's position as the cleanest State in Nigeria.
On Vendors who block roads during the day while evacuating dustbins, Mr. Anderson said that vendors are directed to evacuate dustbins at night and not day time when people go about their businesses, while at the same time calling on Vendors to do their Jobs right and in time.
Speaking on the attitude of the people towards waste disposal in the state, the Chairman called on Cross Riverians and other Nigerians in the state to cooperate with the Committee achieve it's mandate of working to ensure that Cross River state remains Clean and free of refuse, and to maintain it's position as the cleanest State in Nigeria.
Also speaking, a member of the Committee, Dr. Godwin Amanke, disclosed thus: "The committee is raising the consciousness of Cross Riverians about dumping of refuse. There are about 273 dustbin sites across the city and repairs of about 38-50 of the bins have started already and by Monday or Tuesday, next week we will start deploying the repaired dustbins."
In the same vein, a member of the Committee, Mr. Edem Effiom added that 27th July has been set aside for sanitation to mop up trash in the state to ensure Calabar remains clean, and that the committee is working hand in hand with vendors to ensure they pick up dustbins in time.
The Committee had in attendance the Chairman, Mr. Eric Anderson, Dr Godwin Amanke, and Mr Edem Okokon Effiom. Other members of the are Oliver Orok and Itaya Nyong.
