Odukpani Chapter of the Labour Party shared in the history of the political revolution that is taking the country by storm as they joined other chapters to host its town hall meeting in Eti B Guest House, Okurikang in Odukpani Local Government Area.
Declaring the event open, Mr. Obo John Nja, the Chapter chairman in his opening remarks said that the chapter has joined their counterpart to tell the world about the candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi who has distinguished himself in all ramifications having manned public office as the governor of Anambra currently contesting as the president of Nigeria. He has been in and out of the politics of Nigeria and knows the problems of our country and this is seen in Mr. Peter Obi who is committed to the development of the youth and the generality of the country.
He also lauded the track record of Rt. Hon. Daniel Asuquo who before has taken the business of representation to a new level by addressing the needs of the people as against the politics of handouts. According to him, with Dansuki as the senator, Cross River South will be taken to a new level. Placing the Members of the House of Representatives in the state, Daniel Asuquo is one of the vanguards of delivering democratic dividends. He has made us envious of his federal constituency. This is not about sentiment but the realities on the ground.
He also charged them to support the candidacy of Hon. Bassey Akiba for Odukpani/Calabar Municipal Federal Constituency. He further drew the attention of the people to the leadership and administrative sagacity of Hon. Bassey Akiba whose leadership and delivery as chairman of Odukpani cannot be rivaled to date.
The Vice Chairman South, Bishop Archibong Effiom, commended the people for turning up in their numbers to be part of the new political narrative to reposition the country for good. He decried the terrible state of our economy which is as a result of bad leadership. According to him, "you have a part to play in changing the status quo by electing good leaders that will turn around the fortunes of our country. Ours has reached the stage of an all-around bad as even our currency the Naira is almost exchanging for almost a thousand Naira. We cannot continue like this".
We know the party already, Labour Party, and educating our people is sacrosanct because we don't want to make any mistake. Please note that Papa, Mama, Pikin! Is our logo, hence we must internalize this logo in our heads.
He also reiterated the reasons as earlier advanced by the chapter chairman on the need to vote credible people into offices and shun the politics of mortgaging our future which has been the reoccurring decimal in the past 23years.
Hon. Etim Umo, the State House of Assembly candidate lamented the many cases of poor representation in the state house which must stop. He pointed out the disconnect that exists in other parties where the political class abandoned the people and is permanently based in the metropolis of Calabar forgetting home. This is the time to support your own because all the candidates of the Labour Party are home-breed politicians that have the interest of the people at heart. He commended the leadership of the party for bringing back the spirit of community base engagement in the town hall meeting.
The general tone of the message centres on the family as the party is out to make a difference in the country and at all levels of governance. The message of addressing the needs of the people and not a means of settling very few persons while the microscopic few who would have benefitted are still recommended by the political class who are also their family members, hence the little empowerment that would have gotten to some people is denied them.
The event played host to several political support groups numbering more than thirty who pledged their total and undivided support to all the candidates of the party in all elections.
The general atmosphere was very welcoming as the people from their interactions expressed optimism about getting involved in the electioneering processes and also protecting their votes in the forthcoming elections.
Issues raised bothered on power rotation between the two local government areas in the federal constituency, Calabar Municipal/Odukpani which the people lamented that Calabar Municipal is almost monopolizing the seat which they commended the Labour Party for providing the alternative for the people.
The State Women Leader, Comr. Maria Otu who took the closing remarks promised to carry all the women along. The meeting into various solidarity chants before rising to a close.
