As the Federal Government of Nigeria take steps to review remuneration of civil and public servants in the country, the Chairman of Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), Mohammed Bello Shehu who featured on Channels TV programme, Sunrise Daily. disclosed the Cross River State government have been receiving $500 million every month from the Stabilization Fund due to the state's loss of Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon, which affected its revenue.
Shehu said the money was meant to resettle the displaced people of Bakassi Peninsula.
He added that Cross River State has been receiving the money monthly out of the Stabilization Fund since the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo till date.
This is to mean that the administration of Governor Donald Duke, Senator Liyel Imoke and the current administration of Sen. Ben Ayade have been receiving $500m monthly for almost 20 years.
When asked how consistent the payment has been, Shehu said the payment have never ceased coming from the Obasanjor's administration till date, affirming that the payment is still ongoing.
Shehu however dismissed claims that the ongoing review of renumeration was to increase the salaries of politicians and public office holders.
He said the process was embarked upon following recent demands for review of salary of judges.
This revelations have indeed set many C'Riverians up, as the conversation keeps trending on social media, while concerns are raised on the deplorable state of Bakassi when such amount of monies is capable of rebuilding Bakassi and alleviating poverty in the area.
