CALABAR - In a bid to avoid electoral crises and ensure peaceful and credible elections, candidates in the forthcoming National Youth Council Election have committed to a peaceful election. This commitment was formalized through a peace pact presented by the Department of State Security (DSS).
According to the DSS, the signing of the Peace Accord is a strategic move to maintain peace and tranquility during and after the elections. The Cross River State Youth Council elections are scheduled to be conducted on Friday, 19th July 2024.
As part of this initiative, aspirants signed the Peace Accord at the DSS office, committing to compliance with accepted norms and conventions. This effort aims to ensure a smooth electoral process.
Speaking at the event, the Cross River State Commissioner for Youths and Skills Acquisition, Odum Ijom Ukam Esq, reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring peace and order throughout the electoral process. He emphasized that measures are in place to provide a level playing field for all aspirants, highlighting Cross River State's reputation as a beacon of peace and tranquility.
The Commissioner conveyed the assurance from the Governor of Cross River State, His Excellency, Senator (Prince) Bassey Edet Otu, regarding the successful conduct of the elections. He warned that any aspirant who fails to adhere to the law and the spirit of the Peace Accord would face automatic disqualification and potential prosecution.
Furthermore, the Commissioner outlined the principles and expectations of the Peace Accord, which will guide the conduct of the elections. He recalled that the elections were previously postponed due to security concerns, but with enhanced security measures now in place, the elections are expected to proceed peacefully.
This emphasis on peace and order is seen as a defining characteristic of Cross River State, reinforcing its image as a state committed to maintaining harmony and stability.
