CALABAR The Cross River State Chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has declared its full support for the Cross River State Government in its bid to reclaim the state's oil wells and the constitutionally guaranteed 13 per cent offshore oil derivation currently under consideration at the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMFC) in Abuja.
In a press release signed by the State Public Relations Officer of NYCN, Comrade Melchizedek David and made available to journalists in Calabar, the youth body described the ongoing RMFC hearing as a critical opportunity to correct what it called a long-standing economic injustice against Cross River State.
The Statement also added that the loss of the oil wells and the attendant derivation funds over the years has negatively impacted the state's revenue profile, slowing down development in key sectors such as infrastructure, youth empowerment, education, healthcare and overall socio-economic growth.
The council, led in the state by His Youthfulness, Comrade Emmanuel Olayi, said the reclamation of the oil wells and the 13 per cent derivation is lawful, justifiable and necessary to secure a better future for both present and future generations of Cross Riverians.
Throwing its weight behind the state leadership, the NYCN commended Governor Bassey Edet Otu for what it described as courage, diligence and strategic leadership in pursuing the matter through constitutional and legal channels.
The youth body assured the state government of its total support, cooperation and readiness to mobilise young people across the state in defence of Cross River's economic and constitutional rights, while stressing its commitment to peaceful advocacy and constructive civic engagement.
The NYCN also called on the RMFC and the National Boundary Commission to handle the matter with transparency, fairness and objectivity, guided strictly by facts, equity and the provisions of the Constitution, in the interest of justice and national unity.
In addition, the council appealed to federal authorities, traditional institutions, civil society organisations and other well-meaning Nigerians to support Cross River State in what it described as a noble and legitimate pursuit.
