CALABAR – The Member representing Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rep. Bassey Akiba, has expressed deep sympathy with victims of the devastating fire outbreak at the Akim Timber Market in Calabar Municipality.
In a statement issued on March 28, 2026, the federal lawmaker described the incident as tragic, noting that the market has long served as a major hub of commerce, enterprise, and livelihood for countless families within and beyond the state.
Rep. Akiba lamented the scale of destruction caused by the inferno, acknowledging both the emotional trauma and economic hardship inflicted on traders and affected families. He extended his heartfelt condolences to all those who suffered losses as a result of the incident.
"Our hearts go out to every trader and family affected by this devastating fire," he said. "In this trying time, we stand with you, sharing in your pain and loss, and honouring your resilience."
The lawmaker further emphasized the urgent need for proactive and preventive measures to avert future occurrences, calling on relevant authorities and stakeholders to strengthen safety mechanisms in public markets across the state.
He also urged members of the community to rally support for victims, encouraging collective solidarity to help those affected recover and rebuild their livelihoods.
