The member representing Boki/Ikom Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Victor Abang, has formally declared his intention to seek a second term in the 2027 general elections, highlighting his legislative achievements and grassroots interventions as justification for continuity.
Speaking during his official declaration address to constituents and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abang said his first tenure has been marked by purposeful representation, people-driven legislation, and tangible development across the constituency.
He noted that since his inauguration on June 13, 2023, as the fifth representative of Boki/Ikom in the Fourth Republic, his focus has been on translating the mandate of the people into measurable outcomes. According to him, his legislative record includes sponsorship of key bills such as the proposed establishment of a Federal College of Agriculture (Forestry) in Okundi, a Federal College of Education (Technical) in Ikom, and a Federal Medical Centre in Boki.
Other legislative efforts, he said, include amendments to the Labour Act, the National Park Service Act, and the proposed establishment of the Elite Sheriff Corps, all aimed at strengthening governance and improving service delivery.
Beyond lawmaking, Abang emphasized his motions on critical constituency concerns, including Nigeria–Cameroon boundary issues, elephant invasions in Bamba, and the need for improved border security infrastructure. He also referenced advocacy for the completion of key projects such as the Ikom Specialist Hospital and the Odukpani–Ikot Ekpene road.
On constituency development, the lawmaker pointed to several micro-projects executed across the 22 wards of Boki/Ikom, covering water supply, rural electrification, healthcare, education, and road infrastructure. He added that farmers have benefited from the distribution of seedlings, agrochemicals, and equipment to boost food production and local enterprise.
“The results are visible, and the progress is undeniable,” Abang stated, stressing that his achievements were a product of collective effort and shared vision with the people.
Making a case for re-election, the lawmaker argued that effective legislative performance often improves with experience, noting that a second term would enhance his influence and capacity to attract more federal projects to the constituency.
He cautioned against replacing a first-term lawmaker with another newcomer, describing such expectations as unrealistic within the context of Nigeria’s presidential system, which, he said, rewards seniority and institutional knowledge.
Abang, however, acknowledged challenges, particularly fiscal constraints at the national level, which he said slowed the implementation of some projects in the 2025 budget cycle. He assured constituents that efforts are underway to ensure completion of ongoing projects as revenue conditions improve.
Reaffirming his commitment to service, he pledged to continue amplifying the voices of his constituents at the national level and to pursue policies that promote development, inclusion, and prosperity.
The lawmaker also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership and reform agenda, as well as to Cross River State Governor Bassey Edet Otu for what he described as purposeful governance in the state.
He further commended the leadership and members of the APC in Boki/Ikom for their continued support and unity.
Abang concluded by appealing to constituents to renew his mandate, promising to build on the foundation already laid and deliver greater dividends of democracy if re-elected.
