OBUDU – The Cross River State chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work at the Obudu International Cargo Airport, describing the project as a major economic game-changer for the northern part of the state.
During a unity and assessment tour to the project site, the State Chairman of NYCN, Comrade Emmanuel Olaye, said findings on ground confirmed that work is ongoing, dispelling doubts about continuity in governance.
According to the project manager, construction has reached advanced stages, with Phase 1 at 87 percent completion and Phase 2 at 48 percent, while critical components such as the apron are fully completed. The terminal building and control tower are both nearing completion at about 90 percent, while the fire service unit stands at 85 percent.
Olaye noted that the presence of young people actively working on-site reflects the project’s strong local content and its potential to create employment opportunities for youths upon completion.
He commended the current administration for sustaining the initiative started by the previous government, emphasizing that governance should be seen as a continuum rather than a break from past efforts.
The NYCN chairman highlighted the economic benefits of the airport, stating that it would significantly reduce travel time between Calabar and the northern axis, boost tourism around the Obudu Ranch, and stimulate business activities in surrounding communities.
He also called on youths in the area to take ownership of the project by safeguarding the facility against vandalism, stressing that public infrastructure must be protected to secure future opportunities.
The project manager, a young professional overseeing the construction, described the airport as a long-term investment for youths, noting that many local workers, including engineers and equipment operators, are already engaged in the project.
While acknowledging challenges such as rising costs due to inflation, he maintained that contractors remain committed to delivering the project, with a tentative completion timeline projected between February and March next year, subject to adequate funding and support.
The NYCN reiterated its support for the project, urging sustained government backing to ensure timely completion and maximize its socio-economic impact.
