CALABAR –The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has commended the growing level of youth engagement on the ongoing Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway project, revealing that over 500 young Nigerians have been employed on the construction corridor.
The commendation followed an inspection tour of the Calabar axis of the coastal highway by NYCN leaders, led by the Cross River State Chairman, Comrade Emmanuel Olayi, as part of the Council’s “Future First” project verification initiative.
Speaking during the visit, Olayi described the project as “highly commendable,” noting that it reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to infrastructure development and youth inclusion. He disclosed that findings from interactions with workers on site showed that more than 500 youths are currently engaged on the project, with over 300 already absorbed as contract staff by the construction firm, HITECH.
“We have gone through the stretch of this road and what we have seen is not theory, but practical evidence of development,” he said. “For us as youth leaders, it is important to verify these projects so we can confidently speak to young people based on what we have seen firsthand.”
Olayi particularly praised HITECH for prioritizing local content, describing the level of youth involvement as a positive signal for economic empowerment and skills development.
Beyond employment, the NYCN Chairman lauded the quality of work on the highway, pointing to the thickness and design of the concrete pavement as indicators of durability and adherence to global standards.
“For me, this appears to be one of the best road projects I have seen in terms of quality. The construction details, the width, and the materials used all point to a long-lasting infrastructure,” he added.
He further emphasized the economic significance of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, describing it as a transformative project that will enhance connectivity, boost trade, and open up new opportunities for states along the corridor, including Cross River.
The NYCN also used the opportunity to express appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for initiating the project under his Renewed Hope Agenda, as well as the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, for overseeing its execution.
Addressing concerns about policy continuity, Olayi said he was reliably informed that funding for the project has already been secured, assuring that the highway is not at risk of abandonment regardless of future political changes.
“This project brings hope to our people. It is already making an impact, and we believe it will deliver even greater economic benefits when completed,” he stated.
The inspection tour underscores the NYCN’s growing role in promoting accountability and bridging the information gap between government initiatives and young citizens, particularly by verifying projects and amplifying their real-time impact.
