AKAMKPA– Akamkpa Local Government Area on Thursday recorded a significant milestone in its governance history as the Executive Chairman, Hon. Amb. Felix Akposi, assented to three landmark bye-laws aimed at strengthening security, promoting environmental sustainability, and institutionalising the council's identity.
The historic ceremony, held at the Council Secretariat in Akamkpa, witnessed the formal signing into law of the Akamkpa Local Government Security Trust Fund and Other Related Matters Bye-Law, 2026; the Akamkpa Local Government Environmental Sanitation and Other Related Matters Bye-Law, 2026; and the Akamkpa Local Government Logo and Other Related Matters Bye-Law, 2026.
The event, attended by government officials, traditional rulers, security agencies, private sector representatives, community leaders, and other stakeholders, is being described as one of the most consequential legislative achievements since the creation of the local government.
Speaking shortly after signing the bills into law, Akposi said the new legal framework reflects his administration's commitment to strengthening local governance and accelerating sustainable development across the council area.
According to him, the Security Trust Fund Bye-Law will provide a sustainable framework for mobilising resources to support security agencies and community-based security initiatives, thereby improving public safety and boosting investor confidence.
"Today marks another significant milestone in our collective efforts to strengthen governance and promote sustainable development in Akamkpa Local Government Area," the Chairman said.
He noted that the Environmental Sanitation Bye-Law was designed to reinforce environmental responsibility, improve public health standards, and create a cleaner and healthier environment for residents.
The council boss further explained that the Logo Bye-Law gives legal recognition to the official identity of the local government, preserving its heritage while promoting unity, pride, and institutional continuity among the people.
Akposi commended members of the Legislative Council for their commitment and diligence in ensuring the successful passage of the bye-laws and acknowledged the contributions of traditional institutions, security agencies, community leaders, and residents who participated in the legislative process.
The ceremony also featured detailed presentations on the provisions and expected impact of the newly enacted laws by the Area Commander of Akamkpa Area Command, ACP Baba Ettah, and governance expert, Dr. Valentine Ntui.
The speakers highlighted the potential of the laws to improve security coordination, environmental management, community participation, and institutional development within the local government area.
A major highlight of the event was the unveiling of the official Akamkpa Local Government logo, which stakeholders described as a symbolic representation of the council's identity, heritage, aspirations, and collective values.
In separate goodwill messages, political leaders and elder statesmen, including the Member representing Akamkpa I State Constituency, Hon. Okon Owuna; the Member representing Akamkpa II State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Linus Bassey Etim; and the Paramount Ruler of Akamkpa, HRM Agbor Ewa Ebani, lauded the chairman's leadership and urged stakeholders to support the effective implementation of the new laws.
They emphasized the need for stronger collaboration among government institutions, security agencies, host communities, private sector operators, and development partners to ensure the objectives of the bye-laws are fully realised.
Observers say the enactment of the three laws signals a new phase in Akamkpa's governance architecture, with particular emphasis on security enhancement, environmental protection, institutional branding, and sustainable community development.
With the laws now in force, attention is expected to shift from legislation to implementation as residents and stakeholders look forward to tangible improvements in security, environmental sanitation, and service delivery across the local government area.
