CALABAR –The Cross River State chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has declared an uncompromising campaign against drug abuse, calling on young people, parents and community leaders to unite in protecting the future of the state's youth from the devastating effects of illicit drugs.
The State Chairman of the NYCN, Emmanuel Olayi, made the declaration during the grand finale of activities marking the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, held in Calabar.
Speaking during the awareness rally organised by the Cross River State Drug Control Committee in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Cross River State Command, Olayi described drug abuse as one of the greatest threats confronting young people and the socio-economic development of society.
He said the council would continue to partner with the NDLEA and other relevant stakeholders to intensify public enlightenment campaigns and mobilise youths across communities to reject drug abuse.
"We, the youths of Cross River State, say a complete no to drug abuse. No means no," he declared.
Olayi urged members of the public to support the fight against illicit drugs by reporting drug dealers and traffickers to security agencies, stressing that community participation remains critical to winning the war against substance abuse.
According to him, drug dealers often operate within neighbourhoods, schools and markets, making it imperative for residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement agencies.
"If you know those selling drugs to our young people, report them to the appropriate authorities. Drug abuse is not just an individual problem; it is a danger to families, communities and society at large," he said.
The youth leader warned that addiction destroys lives, robs young people of their productivity and often leads to poverty and hopelessness.
"One secret about drug addiction is that if you become addicted, you will surely go broke. Addiction destroys your future and your ability to contribute meaningfully to society," he added.
Olayi also challenged parents and guardians to play more active roles in monitoring the behaviour, friendships and activities of their children, noting that prevention remains the most effective strategy against drug abuse.
He explained that many young people are lured into substance abuse through peer pressure and harmful associations from an early age, urging families to identify behavioural changes promptly and seek professional help where necessary.
The NYCN chairman reaffirmed the council's commitment to sustained advocacy across schools, communities and public spaces, promising that Cross River youths would continue to champion campaigns promoting healthy lifestyles and responsible choices.
The 2026 World Drug Day was commemorated under the theme, "The World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses,"with stakeholders emphasizing the need for stronger collaboration among government institutions, civil society organisations, traditional rulers, educational institutions and community leaders to tackle the growing challenge of substance abuse.
The week-long activities featured sensitisation campaigns in schools, markets and communities, culminating in a road walk through major streets of Calabar.
