Says 2027 Re-election Bid Will Be a Referendum on Performance

CALABAR – Member representing Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Dr. Alex Egbona, has declared that a fresh mandate in 2027 would be his final term in the National Assembly, promising to relinquish the seat to the Yakurr axis of the constituency in 2031.
Egbona, who is seeking re-election for a third term, made the declaration during an interview marking his seventh year in the House of Representatives, where he reflected on his stewardship and political future.
The lawmaker said he was confident that the people of Abi/Yakurr would overwhelmingly renew his mandate in 2027 based on what he described as his impactful representation over the last seven years.
“I am certain that Abi/Yakurr people know that I have served them well, with all my heart, for the past seven years and so they will willingly give me their mandate for a fresh term,” he said.
According to him, the next tenure would be his last in the Green Chamber, after which he would step aside for a representative from Yakurr Local Government Area.
“Like I have said in various fora, this will be my last term in the House of Reps. After 2031, I will vacate the seat for my Yakurr brothers or sisters to take over,” Egbona stated.
The chairman of the House Committee on Specialty Healthcare said his approach to governance has always been driven by consultation and inclusiveness, noting that constituents would continue to shape his legislative priorities if re-elected.
“By the time I return in 2027 therefore, I will, as usual, consult widely with the royal fathers, the women, the youths, political leaders and everybody in the constituency. I do not walk or work alone,” he said.
Egbona maintained that his record in office speaks for itself, insisting that the people of Abi and Yakurr had witnessed unprecedented development projects, empowerment programmes and constituency interventions under his watch.
He argued that despite legal battles that trailed both his 2019 and 2023 elections, he had delivered more dividends of democracy than previous representatives.
“At the risk of sounding immodest, I can say that if you put together everything my predecessors achieved in 20 years, you will discover that my seven years have been much more impactful,” he said.
The federal lawmaker listed projects in healthcare, education, water supply, rural electrification, youth empowerment, employment facilitation and social welfare support as some of his achievements in office.
Looking ahead to the 2027 contest, Egbona expressed confidence that victory was inevitable, describing the election as a verdict on performance.
“The 2027 election in Abi/Yakurr will be a referendum on performance,” he declared.
He challenged his opponents to present their own scorecards to the electorate, insisting that voters would compare records and make their decision based on service delivery.
Political observers say Egbona's pledge to step down in 2031 could resonate strongly with proponents of rotational representation within the federal constituency, even as preparations for the 2027 elections gradually gather momentum across Cross River State.
