CALABAR – The Vice Chancellor of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), Prof. Francisca Bassey, has reaffirmed the institution's commitment to merit, integrity, and value-based education, warning against the promotion and graduation of students who do not meet the required academic and professional standards.
Prof. Bassey made the assertion during the University's monthly prayer and praise session held at the Vice Chancellor's Conference Room, where she emphasized the need for members of the university community to uphold ethical values and maintain excellence in all aspects of academic and administrative responsibilities.
According to the Vice Chancellor, institutions of higher learning play a critical role in shaping future leaders and professionals whose competence and character will have a lasting impact on society. She stressed that universities must remain committed to producing graduates who are not only academically sound but also morally upright.
Speaking during the event, the Guest Minister, Pastor Ayang Umoren of God Wonders Service, echoed the Vice Chancellor's position, cautioning against academic compromise and the dangers of graduating individuals who are not qualified.
He noted that the consequences of promoting or certifying unqualified persons extend beyond the university environment and contribute significantly to the decline of standards in society.
"When you pass somebody that is not fit to be passed or promote somebody that is not fit to be promoted, you have succeeded in inflicting harm on the society. You are also responsible for the decadence in the society," he said.
Pastor Umoren maintained that universities have a responsibility to nurture competent professionals and leaders who will uphold integrity in their respective fields.
"If we play our parts and technocrats come from these corridors, they will not be cajoled. If they enter politics, you can't buy them. If they enter any industry, you can't buy them. They will always maintain decorum and high standards," he added.
The cleric further described UNICROSS as an institution with the potential to lead by example in promoting ethical values, professionalism, and academic excellence.
He expressed confidence in the leadership of Prof. Bassey and commended the University's efforts toward fostering a culture of accountability, diligence, and character development among staff and students.
The prayer session also featured thanksgiving prayers led by the Registrar, Dr. Catherine Osai, who expressed gratitude for peace, protection, and progress across the University's campuses.
Special prayers were offered for the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, while thanksgiving prayers were also said for the Deputy Governor, Hon. Dr. Peter Odey, on the occasion of his birthday.
Participants at the gathering described the session as impactful and inspiring, noting that beyond its spiritual significance, it reinforced the University's commitment to excellence, ethical conduct, and the production of graduates equipped to make meaningful contributions to national development.
