MINNA - The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has assured Nigerians that every legitimate vote cast in the 2027 general elections will count, reaffirming the Commission's commitment to delivering credible, transparent and peaceful polls.
Prof. Amupitan gave the assurance on Friday during a courtesy visit to former Head of State and Chairman of the National Peace Committee, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), at his residence in Minna, Niger State.
The INEC Chairman, who led a delegation comprising National Commissioners, the Secretary to the Commission, directors and technical aides, said restoring public confidence in the electoral process remains a key priority of his administration.
According to him, the Commission is determined to ensure that Nigerians participate in the electoral process with the confidence that their votes will be accurately counted and reflected in the final election results.
"The Commission's determination under my leadership is to ensure that ordinary Nigerians go out to vote, confident that their votes will be duly counted and reflected in the outcome of elections," Amupitan stated.
He described the assurance as the fundamental responsibility INEC owes the Nigerian electorate, stressing that the integrity of the ballot would remain sacrosanct despite the challenges associated with election management in the country.
Amupitan also announced the timetable for the 2027 general elections, disclosing that the Presidential and National Assembly elections will hold on January 16, 2027, while Governorship and State House of Assembly elections have been scheduled for February 6, 2027
The INEC Chairman commended Gen. Abdulsalami for his contributions to Nigeria's democratic journey, describing him as a statesman whose leadership has continued to strengthen democratic governance and peaceful elections.
He also praised the National Peace Committee under Abdulsalami's leadership for promoting political tolerance and non-violence through the signing of Peace Accords by political actors, noting that the initiative has enhanced electoral peace and reinforced public confidence in the democratic process.
Responding, Gen. Abdulsalami urged Nigerians to support the electoral commission as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections, expressing optimism that credible elections remain essential to sustaining the country's democracy.
