CALABAR – The University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) is poised to significantly enhance digital teaching, learning and research with the completion of its state-of-the-art ICT/Multimedia Complex, a landmark infrastructure project expected to strengthen the institution's drive towards technology-driven education and academic excellence.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Francisca Bassey, gave the indication during an inspection of the nearly completed facility at the university's Calabar Campus, where she expressed satisfaction with the pace of work and the quality of construction.
The inspection, which was conducted alongside principal officers of the university, project engineers, consultants and site supervisors, formed part of the institution's quality assurance process to ensure the facility meets global standards before it is commissioned for academic and administrative use.
Speaking during the inspection, Prof. Bassey recalled that the project commenced in April 2025 when the site was officially handed over to the contractor, noting that the transformation from foundation level to near completion reflects the university's commitment to expanding modern infrastructure that supports innovation, research and digital learning.
She commended the contractors, engineers and project managers for maintaining high construction standards and urged them to sustain the momentum by completing the remaining finishing works, quality assurance procedures and final cleaning ahead of commissioning.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, the ICT/Multimedia Complex represents a strategic investment in the university's future, providing students and staff with modern facilities capable of supporting contemporary teaching methods, digital research, multimedia production and technological innovation.
A tour of the facility revealed that the ICT laboratories have been fitted with modern workstations, ergonomic furniture, spacious work desks and computer systems awaiting installation. The laboratories also feature contemporary wall graphics and purpose-built learning spaces designed to promote creativity, collaboration and innovation.
The administrative section of the complex has equally been completed to a high standard, with executive offices tastefully partitioned and equipped with premium fittings, elegant wall finishes, polished floor tiles and energy-efficient air-conditioning systems, creating a conducive environment for academic administration.
Beyond its functional design, the building incorporates modern architectural features, including a sleek glass façade with tinted panels, aesthetically finished corridors and stairways, decorative wall treatments, contemporary lighting systems and inspirational leadership quotations that reflect the institution's vision of excellence.
The facility is also equipped with critical safety and accessibility features such as reinforced staircases with durable handrails, emergency fire alarm call points, clearly marked emergency exits and strategically positioned security surveillance systems.
Prof. Bassey noted that upon completion, the ICT/Multimedia Complex would play a pivotal role in advancing digital education at UNICROSS by providing world-class infrastructure for teaching, learning, research, innovation and multimedia content development.
She added that the project aligns with the university's broader strategic vision of producing graduates equipped with the digital competencies required to compete in a rapidly evolving global economy.
The ICT/Multimedia Complex is one of several infrastructure projects being executed under the current administration as part of ongoing efforts to reposition the University of Cross River State as a leading institution for technology-driven education, innovation and academic excellence.
