'You're Still in the Kindergarten of Politics' — Mayor of Cal. Takes Swipe at Arthur Jarvis' Ambition

CALABAR– A former Mayor of Calabar Municipality, Chief Okon Asuquo, has taken a scathing swipe at the governorship ambition of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in Cross River State, Sir Arthur Jarvis Archibong, describing him as "still in the kindergarten of politics" and urging him to abandon his ambition in support of Governor Bassey Edet Otu.

Speaking during an interview with Calitown, Asuquo dismissed Jarvis' recent criticisms of the Otu administration, insisting that the PDP flag bearer lacks the political experience required to govern Cross River State.

According to the former mayor, the state cannot be entrusted to someone who is "still learning the ropes" of politics.

 "You are still in the kindergarten of politics. We can't hand over our state to someone who's learning the ropes," Asuquo was quoted as saying.

He argued that leadership of a state requires years of political experience, maturity and an understanding of governance, adding that Governor Otu has demonstrated capacity and deserves the support of Cross River people.

Asuquo reportedly advised Jarvis to shelve his governorship ambition and instead align with the incumbent governor in what he described as the overall interest of the state.

The former mayor also maintained that Governor Otu's administration has recorded significant achievements across critical sectors and should be given the opportunity to consolidate on its developmental strides rather than being distracted by what he termed "premature political ambitions."

His remarks come amid growing political activities ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Cross River State, with Arthur Jarvis emerging as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party and intensifying his criticism of the APC-led administration. Jarvis has repeatedly accused the Otu government of underperformance and vowed to unseat the governor in the 2027 election. 

The comments by the former mayor are expected to further heighten political exchanges between the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition PDP as both parties prepare for what is shaping up to be a keenly contested governorship race.

C'River Youth Council Endorses Governor Otu's Second-Term Bid

CALABAR –The Cross River State Chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has endorsed Governor Bassey Edet Otu for a second term in office, citing his administration's performance and responsiveness to issues affecting young people across the state.

The endorsement followed a meeting of the State Management Committee (SMC) of the council, where members reviewed reports from all 18 local government areas and assessed the council's activities over the past two years. 

Speaking after the meeting in Calabar, the State Chairman of the NYCN, Comrade Emmanuel Olayi, said the decision was informed by findings from the council's statewide assessment tour, during which youth leaders engaged communities and evaluated government projects and interventions.

According to him, the council's report captured both positive developments and areas requiring urgent attention, noting that government had already begun responding to some of the concerns raised.

"We presented to the management committee the outcome of our tour across the local government areas. Based on what we found on the field, the National Youth Council resolved to support His Excellency, Governor Bassey Otu, for a second-term bid," Olayi said.

"Our report was in two parts – the positive achievements and the challenges we observed. We submitted our findings to government, and I am pleased that interventions have already commenced in some of those areas." 

The NYCN chairman explained that the meeting also reviewed the council's programmes since assuming office two years ago, including the Solemn Assembly, the Youth Convergence, statewide engagement tours, and preparations for upcoming International Youth Day Activities. 

As part of efforts to strengthen youth coordination in the state, the State Management Committee approved the immediate commencement of a registration and revalidation exercise for youth organisations in collaboration with the Cross River State Ministry of Youth Development.

Olayi disclosed that a digital portal would be launched within two weeks to enable youth organisations operating in the state to register, revalidate their status or formally affiliate with the council.

He said the initiative would provide government with reliable data on youth organisations, improve coordination, and ensure that programmes and opportunities reach a broader segment of the youth population. 

The committee also empowered the state leadership to constitute a committee to investigate the conduct of some members of the council and make recommendations for appropriate action in line with the organisation's constitution. 

Reaffirming the council's statutory role, Olayi noted that the Cross River State Government had consistently recognised the National Youth Council of Nigeria as the umbrella body for youth organisations in the state, pledging that the council would continue to work with government to promote youth development, leadership and civic participation. 

C'River Youth Council to Register All Youth Organisations, Launch Affiliation Portal

CALABAR – The Cross River State Chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has announced plans to commence the registration, revalidation and affiliation of all youth organisations operating in the state as part of efforts to strengthen youth coordination, improve government engagement and build a comprehensive database of youth groups.

The initiative, which received the approval of the State Management Committee (SMC) of the council, will be implemented in partnership with the Cross River State Ministry of Youth and Skills Development.

Speaking at the end of the State Management Committee meeting in Calabar, the State Chairman of the NYCN, Comrade Emmanuel Olayi, said the exercise would commence with the launch of an affiliation portal through which youth organisations would register and provide details of their operations.

According to him, the portal is expected to become operational within the next two weeks, allowing youth organisations across the state to register, revalidate their status and formally affiliate with the council.

Olayi explained that the initiative was not intended to restrict the formation of youth organisations but to ensure that groups operating in the state align with the objectives of the National Youth Council of Nigeria and the Ministry of Youth and Skills Development.

"We are not trying to reduce the number of youth organisations. Young people are free to associate. What we want to establish is whether these organisations are working in line with the mandate of the National Youth Council and the Ministry of Youth Development. If they are, we will work together; if they are not, government should also know the difference," he said.

He said every organisation seeking affiliation would be required to submit its constitution, leadership structure and operational focus to enable the council determine its eligibility and maintain credible records of youth organisations in the state.

The NYCN chairman noted that the database would provide government with reliable statistics for planning and implementing youth-focused programmes, adding that it would also ensure that interventions, grants and opportunities reach genuine youth organisations across the state.

"If government wants to engage the youth community, we should be able to present verifiable data. We want to know how many youth organisations we have, who their leaders are and what they do. That way, whatever opportunities come to young people can reach all registered organisations," Olayi stated.

He further disclosed that the State Management Committee also approved the establishment of senatorial advisory councils to strengthen mentorship, leadership development and conflict resolution within the council's structure.

According to him, the advisory councils will serve as support platforms for youth leaders at the senatorial district level, identify outstanding young leaders for greater responsibilities and provide guidance to local government chapters before issues escalate to the state leadership.

Olayi said the resolutions formed part of broader reforms aimed at repositioning the National Youth Council of Nigeria in Cross River State as the umbrella body for youth organisations and enhancing collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Skills Development.

He added that the council remained committed to promoting youth participation, institutional development and effective partnerships with government in advancing policies and programmes that improve the welfare of young people across Cross River State.

C'River Commissioner Backs NYCN Leadership Following Court Verdict

CALABAR –The Cross River State Commissioner for Youth and Skills Development, Barr Ukam Ijom Charles, has reaffirmed the state government’s confidence in the leadership of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) following a Federal Court judgment that validated the re-election of Ambassador Sokubo Sara-Igbe Sokubo as National President of the council.

The Commissioner gave the assurance while receiving a delegation of the NYCN National Executive Council led by Ambassador Sokubo during a courtesy visit to the Ministry in Calabar.

He described the court verdict as a welcome development that had strengthened the legitimacy of the NYCN leadership and would further promote unity among youth organisations across the country.

According to him, the Cross River State chapter of the NYCN had remained steadfast in its support for the national leadership throughout the period of litigation, believing strongly that the matter would be resolved through lawful means.

“Having participated in the congress where Ambassador Sokubo was unanimously re-elected and having carefully examined the constitution of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, we were convinced that he was duly elected. As law-abiding citizens, we waited for the court to pronounce its judgment, and today that trust has been validated,” the Commissioner said.

He commended the NYCN for pursuing legal channels rather than resorting to violence during the leadership dispute, noting that the peaceful resolution of the matter demonstrated maturity and respect for democratic institutions.

The Commissioner also assured the visiting delegation of the Cross River State Government’s continued partnership with the NYCN in advancing youth development, skills acquisition, and empowerment programmes in the state.

Speaking on behalf of the National Executive Council, the Deputy National Secretary of the NYCN, Prince Ndiyo Ndiyo, said the Federal High Court judgment had restored the council to the status quo, affirming that the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) lacked the legal authority to deregister the National Youth Council of Nigeria. He noted that the judgment, delivered on June 5, 2026, also affirmed Ambassador Sokubo Sara-Igbe Sokubo's leadership following the legal action instituted by the council.

Ndiyo explained that following the judgment, the Director-General of the CAC formally acknowledged Ambassador Sokubo as National President and invited him for a meeting, while the council had embarked on nationwide engagements with ministries, security agencies and other stakeholders to consolidate the gains of the court victory. He described the visit to Cross River as significant because of the state's unwavering support for the council throughout the leadership dispute, adding that the NYCN remained committed to protecting the institution as the umbrella body for youth organisations in Nigeria.

Also speaking, the Cross River State Chairman of the NYCN, Comrade Emmanuel Olayi, said the state chapter had remained resolute in defending the council's constitutional mandate despite the leadership dispute at the national level. He noted that the relationship between the council and the Cross River State Ministry of Youth and Skills Development had remained cordial and productive, describing the ministry as a dependable partner in promoting youth development initiatives across the state.

Olayi further disclosed that the State Management Committee had resolved to strengthen the council's institutional framework by commencing the registration and revalidation of youth organisations in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Skills Development. According to him, the initiative is aimed at creating a comprehensive database of youth organisations operating in Cross River State to improve coordination, policy implementation and government engagement with young people.

Earlier, Ambassador Sokubo said Cross River was one of the first states he chose to visit after the court judgment because of the unwavering support the state chapter and the Ministry had shown during the period of uncertainty.

He expressed appreciation to the Commissioner, the Ministry, and the youth of Cross River State for standing by the national leadership, adding that the NYCN would continue to work closely with the state government to promote peace, unity, and youth empowerment.

The NYCN delegation used the visit to formally present copies of the court judgment and official communication confirming the recognition of Ambassador Sokubo as the bona fide National President of the council.

CROs Endorse Otu’s Social Investment Programme, Say It Will Benefit the Poorest

CALABAR – Community Relations Officers (CROs) from the Southern Senatorial District of Cross River State have expressed strong confidence in Governor Bassey Otu’s Social Investment Programme, saying the initiative would significantly improve the lives of the poorest and most vulnerable residents across the state.

The officers gave the endorsement following the recent training of Ward Development Officers organised by the Office of the State Coordinator, Social Investment Programme in preparation for the implementation of the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) project and skills acquisition programme targeted at over 150 Cross Riverians.

Speaking shortly after the training held at Axari Hotels in Calabar, Comrade Nkese Ita of Bakassi said the governor’s people-driven agenda had continued to inspire confidence among grassroots stakeholders.

Ita, who spoke on behalf of her colleagues from the Southern Senatorial District, noted that the social investment programme would provide much-needed relief to poor households, particularly through direct cash transfers and vocational training opportunities.

“Projects and programmes such as this will go a long way in assisting the poorest of the poor within our communities. It will serve as start-up support for small table businesses while also equipping others with skills that will add value to their lives and provide them with lifelong income-generating opportunities,” she said.

She described Governor Otu as “God-sent” to the state, adding that his administration had transformed the fortunes of Cross River through deliberate policies aimed at improving the welfare of ordinary citizens.

Ita also commended the governor for sustaining a stable local governance system, which she said had allowed development and democracy to trickle down to the grassroots through the local government structure.

“Governor Otu’s deliberate efforts to allow democracy to thrive at the local government level have sustained democratic governance at the third tier of government and brought development closer to the common man,” she added.

Also speaking, Hon. Edem Effiwat of Calabar South Constituency I described Governor Otu as a “stabiliser” who had brought political stability to the state and carried all segments of society along.

Effiwat praised the governor’s humanitarian efforts, particularly his commitment to people-centred programmes such as social investment projects, youth empowerment initiatives, and skills acquisition schemes.

The CROs specifically hailed several other empowerment and human capital development programmes introduced by the Otu administration, including the planned empowerment of 4,500 youths across the 18 local government areas of the state through the Cross River Youth Development Summit.

They also referenced the People’s First Youth Skills and Empowerment Programme, which offers training in tailoring, shoemaking, poultry farming, aquaculture, and basic ICT, as well as the administration’s ICT training initiative designed to develop world-class digital talents among Cross River youths.

In addition, the officers applauded the governor’s support for entrepreneurship development programmes aimed at equipping young people with business skills, mentorship, and access to economic opportunities.

Earlier in his address, the State Coordinator of the Social Investment Programme, Hon. Edem Effiom, explained that the training was designed to build the capacity of Ward Development Officers to update the State Social Register and ensure the successful implementation of the Conditional Cash Transfer programme.

He noted that the programme forms part of the state government’s broader effort to strengthen social protection, reduce poverty, and empower vulnerable households across the 196 wards of Cross River State.

Effiom added that the government plans to train 196 Ward Development Officers and 25 Local Government Liaison Officers across the state, while 100 beneficiaries are expected to receive direct cash transfers and others benefit from skills acquisition and empowerment support.

Kijuo Calls for Stronger Community Partnerships to Advance Youth Development in C'River

CALABAR – The Senior Special Assistant to the Cross River State Governor on Youth Development, Dr. Julius Obanghe Kijuo, has called for stronger partnerships between government and community-based organisations to accelerate youth empowerment and sustainable development in Cross River State.

Dr. Kijuo made the call while receiving the leadership of the ATAM Community, led by its Coordinator, Mr. Agape George, during a courtesy visit in Calabar.

The meeting centred on issues affecting young people and explored practical areas of collaboration aimed at promoting leadership development, economic empowerment, and inclusive growth among youths across the state.

Speaking during the visit, Dr. Kijuo emphasized that meaningful youth development can only be achieved through collective efforts involving government, communities, and other stakeholders.

The SSA reaffirmed his office’s readiness to support programmes that align with Governor Bassey Otu’s vision of empowering youths and fostering people-oriented development.

Earlier, Mr. Agape George said the ATAM Community remains dedicated to advancing initiatives that will positively impact young people and contribute to the overall development of Cross River State.

He noted that engaging relevant government stakeholders was crucial to achieving the community’s developmental objectives.

The visit concluded with both parties pledging to strengthen cooperation and pursue initiatives that will enhance opportunities for youths and drive sustainable community development in the state.

UNICROSS: ASUU Suspends Two-Month Strike After Otu’s Intervention

…Lecturers return to classrooms as government moves to address welfare, salary arrears and funding concerns

CALABAR — Academic activities are set to resume at the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) following the suspension of the nearly two-month-old strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), UNICROSS branch, after the intervention of Governor Bassey Otu.

The union had commenced an indefinite strike on May 19, 2026, grounding academic activities and leaving thousands of students stranded across the institution.

The suspension, announced after a series of engagements between the state government and ASUU leadership, marks a major breakthrough in efforts to resolve the lingering industrial dispute that had threatened the stability of the university’s academic calendar.

 Grievances that triggered the strike

ASUU-UNICROSS had embarked on the industrial action over 11 demands bordering on staff welfare, salary arrears, and the non-implementation of agreements reached between ASUU and the Federal Government.

Among the union’s key demands were the implementation of the salary structure and welfare provisions contained in the 2025 FG-ASUU renegotiated agreement, including the Continuous Academic Training Allowance, Earned Academic Allowance, and other professional allowances.

The lecturers also demanded increased government funding for the university, prompt payment of monthly salaries not later than the third day of every succeeding month, and the payment of arrears arising from the 35 per cent and 25 per cent wage awards dating back to January 2023.

Other outstanding issues included unpaid promotion arrears and earned academic allowances dating back to 2011, remittance of N11.9 million in check-off dues owed since 2017, N69 million in cooperative deductions, and unpaid National Housing Fund deductions withheld since 2018.

At the height of the crisis, ASUU Chairman, Dr. Patrick Ushie, accused the university management of failing to address the union’s concerns, citing inadequate funding as a major challenge.

According to him, the management had disclosed that it received N300 million as monthly subvention from the state government and required an additional N200 million to meet the union’s demands.

 Government steps in

As the strike entered its 45th day, the Cross River State Government intensified efforts to broker peace between the university management and ASUU.

The union submitted detailed documentation of its grievances to a government technical committee set up to examine the issues in contention.

Governor Otu subsequently constituted a seven-member Technical Committee, chaired by Prof. Uduak Effiong, to conduct a comprehensive review of the university’s working environment, staff welfare, and governance structure.

On July 14, the governor met with the university management and leaders of the Students’ Union Government (SUG), where he assured stakeholders of his administration’s commitment to improving infrastructure and sustaining dialogue with all parties.

During the meeting, Otu approved the request by the Vice Chancellor for additional operational vehicles and promised to equip the university’s Medical Centre and address concerns over the institution’s road network.

Threat of wider industrial action

The UNICROSS crisis had also drawn the attention of the ASUU Calabar Zone, which threatened to embark on a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike across state-owned universities in Abia, Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi and Cross River states over the failure of state governments to implement the 2025 FG-ASUU agreement.

The zonal coordinator, Comrade Ikechukwu Igwenyi, described the situation at UNICROSS as “particularly alarming,” alleging that academic staff had been receiving half salaries for years and lamenting the reported death of a lecturer amid the prolonged welfare crisis.

“Our members in UNICROSS are already in the trenches, not just over the non-implementation of the 2025 Agreement, but also over the non-payment of full salaries for years,” Igwenyi had said.

 Relief for students

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Student Affairs, Joseph Kelvin-Enyam, confirmed the suspension of the strike and expressed appreciation to Governor Otu for honouring his commitment to resolving the impasse.

He also commended the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon. Emmanuel Ironbar, the Special Adviser on General Duties, Barr. Ekpenyong Akiba, the UNICROSS Vice Chancellor, ASUU leadership, and the SUG for their contributions to the resolution of the crisis.

With the strike now suspended, lecturers are expected to return to the classrooms, bringing relief to thousands of students whose academic pursuits had been disrupted for nearly two months.

CALABAR – Cross River State Governor , Senator Bassey Otu has given automatic employment to seven outstanding indigenes of the state who distinguished themselves during the 2025 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year and were subsequently honoured by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu with the prestigious Presidential Honours Award at the Aso Villa.

The governor made this known when he received the awardees at his residence in Calabar, at the weekend , describing their feat as a reflection of the "true Cross River spirit."

Beaming with pride, Otu charged young Cross Riverians to continue embracing service, dedication and commitment wherever they find themselves, stressing that such values remain critical to projecting the state's image positively on the national stage.

" I feel elated and proud of your distinguished service to humanity and the community you served, which made you stand out during your service year, culminating in the prestigious Presidential Honours Award conferred on you by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Aso Villa," the governor said.

He commended the corps members for exemplifying excellence, diligence and commitment throughout their service year, describing them as worthy ambassadors of the state.

"This goes a long way to show the true Cross River spirit that is exemplified through excellence, diligence and commitment. 

"Thank you for distinguishing yourselves throughout your service year and for being good ambassadors of our dear State," he added.

Assuring the young achievers of his administration's unwavering support, Otu declared that Cross Ruvervwas in safe hands 

"With young people like you, I believe that the future of our State is guaranteed. I want you to know that my administration will always stand by you and will support you in any endeavor you desire to undertake," he stated.

Beyond automatic employment, the governor disclosed that beneficiaries who opt out of state civil service would instead be supported with training, skill acquisition, or take-off grants to establish businesses of their choice, a move seen as a bold statement of the administration's investment in youth empowerment.

IPAC Praises Otu, Targets 2.5 Million Registered Voters Ahead of 2027 Elections

CALABAR –The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Cross River State has commended Governor Bassey Otu for what it described as his administration's commitment to inclusive governance and democratic participation, while unveiling an ambitious target of registering no fewer than 2.5 million voters ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during a press briefing at the Ernest Etim Bassey Press Centre in Calabar, to round up it's intensive voter mobilisation campaign, the State Chairman of IPAC, Effiom Edet Okon, urged all eligible residents who are yet to register for their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to seize the opportunity before the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise closes.

He stressed that voter registration remains the foundation of democracy, insisting that only registered voters can actively participate in shaping the nation's political future.

"Our message is simple and clear: no voter's card, no vote. No registration, no participation. Democracy begins with voter registration," he said. 

The IPAC chairman disclosed that the council, in collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), political parties, civil society organisations, youth and women groups, traditional rulers, religious leaders and other stakeholders, had intensified grassroots mobilisation across the state to encourage eligible citizens to register.

"This is not merely a projection; it is a collective target that every stakeholder must work tirelessly to achieve. A higher voter population means a stronger democratic mandate, greater political relevance, increased national recognition and a louder voice for Cross River State in determining the future of Nigeria,” he said.

According to him, the collective effort is aimed at ensuring Cross River records at least 2.5 million registered voters before the 2027 elections, a feat he said would strengthen the state's democratic mandate and political relevance at the national level.

He noted that a larger voter population would not only amplify the voice of Cross River in national affairs but also enhance its political influence in determining Nigeria's future. 

The council called on parents, community leaders, religious institutions and political parties to mobilise eligible citizens, especially young people who have attained voting age, to register before the deadline.

The IPAC chairman also applauded Governor Otu for fostering an atmosphere of political inclusiveness, describing his administration as one that recognises all legally registered political parties as critical stakeholders in governance.

He particularly praised the governor for supporting the activities of the council, saying the administration's open-door policy has strengthened democratic engagement and enhanced the capacity of political parties to contribute meaningfully to governance.

According to him, democracy flourishes where there is dialogue rather than division, inclusion instead of exclusion, and cooperation instead of confrontation. 

Reaffirming the council's commitment to constructive engagement with government, the IPAC chairman said the body would continue to promote peaceful politics, issue-based campaigns, political tolerance and credible elections across the state.

He also commended INEC officials for their dedication to the ongoing voter registration exercise and urged eligible residents not to wait until the last minute before registering.

"History will remember those who participated, not those who watched from the sidelines," he said, while encouraging citizens to register now and prepare to exercise their civic responsibility during the 2027 general elections. 

Responding to questions on internal party leadership disputes, the IPAC chairman maintained that the council recognises only leaderships officially acknowledged by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), stressing that the electoral umpire remains the legitimate authority on such matters.

He further disclosed that the current Continuous Voter Registration exercise is expected to end on Sunday, July 26, urging all eligible residents to take advantage of the remaining days to register.

CALABAR – The leadership tussle within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State took another turn on Friday as Julius Udayi formally presented himself as the party's governorship candidate under the Tanimu Turaki (SAN)-led National Working Committee (NWC), while calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize candidates produced by the faction ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Addressing journalists in Calabar, Udayi, flanked by candidates for the Senate, House of Representatives and the Cross River State House of Assembly, said his emergence followed what he described as the lawful nomination process conducted under the leadership of the Tanimu Turaki-led national structure of the party.

According to him, the press briefing became necessary to address what he termed "misleading narratives" by individuals allegedly presenting themselves as PDP candidates under a different leadership.

"We are the duly nominated and recognized candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party under the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee," Udayi said.

He maintained that the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court judgments affirmed the legitimacy of the Turaki-led leadership, insisting that candidates produced under that structure remain the authentic flag bearers of the party in Cross River State.

Udayi alleged that another group was falsely parading itself as the PDP's official candidates in the state, warning that such actions were capable of creating confusion among party supporters and the electorate ahead of the 2027 elections.

He appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, party faithful and other stakeholders to disregard what he described as false claims and political misinformation regarding the party's candidates in the state.

The governorship candidate also urged members of the public to recognize only candidates produced by the Turaki-led leadership, while reaffirming his faction's commitment to democratic principles and peaceful political engagement.

"As the authentic PDP family in Cross River State, we remain committed to providing credible leadership and working for the peace, progress and prosperity of our state," he stated.

The development adds another dimension to the leadership dispute within the PDP, with rival factions laying claim to the party's structure and candidates in Cross River State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The conflicting claims are expected to attract the attention of INEC and other relevant authorities as the electoral process gathers momentum.

As of the time of filing this report, there was no immediate reaction from the rival PDP faction to Udayi's claims.

UNICROSS STRIKE: Hope in View as Otu Meets Students, Management

CALABAR – Hopes of an end to the industrial action by the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) were rekindled on Tuesday as Governor Bassey Otu met with the institution's management and students, pledging swift government intervention to address the issues at the heart of the crisis.

The meeting, held at the Governor's Office in Calabar, brought together the University's Governing Management led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Francisca Bassey, and representatives of the Students' Union Government (SUG), who sought government support in resolving challenges confronting the institution.

Governor Otu assured the delegation that his administration remained committed to the growth and development of UNICROSS through improved infrastructure, enhanced welfare and sustained dialogue with all stakeholders.

"I am already aware of the challenges facing the university because the Vice-Chancellor had earlier briefed me," the governor said, adding that his administration was taking practical steps to address the concerns raised.

Among the commitments announced was the provision of additional vehicles for the university, following a request by the Vice-Chancellor. The governor also promised to equip the institution's Medical Centre to improve healthcare services for students and staff.

He further disclosed that government would consider the request to rehabilitate the university's internal road network as part of broader efforts to improve the learning environment.

Governor Otu commended the Vice-Chancellor and the university management for their commitment to sustaining academic standards despite prevailing challenges, urging staff, students and other stakeholders to make collective sacrifices towards advancing the institution.

Recognising the need for broader engagement, the governor announced plans to hold a separate meeting with the university's industrial unions in a move widely seen as a critical step towards resolving the lingering industrial dispute.

Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Francisca Bassey, expressed appreciation to the governor for granting the audience and for his continued support for the university. She said the visit was intended to give students an opportunity to engage directly with the governor on issues affecting the institution while seeking further government intervention.

The Students' Union Government President, Comrade Favour Ogar, also thanked the governor for what he described as his consistent support for UNICROSS. He particularly acknowledged the appointment of Prof. Bassey as Vice-Chancellor and the governor's prompt intervention following the recent road accident involving some students of the university.

The meeting later continued behind closed doors with senior government officials.

When members of the UNICROSS delegation emerged, they wore broad smiles, a development that fuelled optimism among observers that progress had been made towards resolving the issues that precipitated the ASUU strike.

Although no timeline was announced for the suspension of the industrial action, the governor's commitment to engage directly with the university unions, alongside assurances on infrastructure and institutional support, has raised fresh expectations that normal academic activities could soon resume.

For thousands of students whose academic calendar has been disrupted by the strike, the meeting offered what many hope will be the beginning of a lasting resolution to the crisis.

4,500 Cross River Youth to Receive Free Skills Training, Empowerment Under Otu's Initiative

CALABAR – No fewer than 4,500 youths across the 18 local government areas of Cross River State are set to benefit from a comprehensive skills acquisition, empowerment and scholarship programme approved by Governor Bassey Edet Otu as part of his administration's commitment to tackling unemployment and promoting sustainable economic development.

The initiative, which forms part of the Cross River State Youth Development Summit, Training and Empowerment 2026, is expected to equip beneficiaries with practical, industry-relevant skills, startup support and educational opportunities to enhance their employability and entrepreneurial capacity.

Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth Development, Dr. Julius Obanghe Kijuo, KSJI, said the programme reflects Governor Otu's determination to move beyond short-term interventions by investing in the long-term economic empowerment of young people.

According to him, beneficiaries between the ages of 18 and 40 will receive training in a wide range of sectors, including digital technology, vocational and technical skills, agriculture, tourism, renewable energy, entrepreneurship and the creative industry.

The digital skills component will cover areas such as digital marketing, content creation, programming, robotics, drone technology and artificial intelligence, while vocational training will include welding and fabrication, tailoring, cake making, entrepreneurship and other market-driven trades.

The programme will also provide opportunities for young people seeking careers in modern agriculture, tourism, green economy and renewable energy, alongside support for indigenous talents in music and movie production. Outstanding applicants will equally benefit from a one-year pre-degree scholarship in a university.

In a major boost to the initiative, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Youth Initiatives, Monitoring and Delivery, Dr. Titilope Gbadamosi, has officially endorsed the programme following an engagement with Dr. Kijuo.

Dr. Gbadamosi commended Governor Otu and his People First administration for prioritising youth development through what she described as a strategic investment capable of transforming the livelihoods of thousands of young people across the state.

She noted that empowering young people with relevant skills remains one of the most effective approaches to reducing unemployment, stimulating innovation and driving economic growth.

To ensure inclusiveness, the state government said training will be conducted across the three senatorial districts, while application forms will be made available at the Office of the Senior Special Assistant on Youth Development at the Ministry of Youth in Calabar, as well as all 18 Local Government Council Headquarters to accommodate applicants, particularly those in rural communities with limited internet access.

C'River Trains Ward Development Officers as Govt Targets Cash Transfers, Skills Empowerment

CALABAR – Cross River State Government has commenced the training of Ward Development Officers in the Southern Senatorial District as part of efforts to update the State Social Register for the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) programme and expand its social safety net interventions.

The training, organised through the Office of the State Coordinator, Social Investment Programme, was held on Friday at Axari Hotels in Calabar and drew more than 85 participants from the Southern Senatorial District.

The State Coordinator for Social Intervention and Investment Programme, Edem Effiom, said the initiative was designed to strengthen grassroots implementation of Governor Bassey Otu’s “People First” social investment agenda.

According to him, the Ward Development Officers, who were appointed by the state government, are expected to serve as the closest link between government and communities, ensuring that social investment programmes reach vulnerable residents at the ward level.

“We just felt that since they are the closest people to the ward, they are the ones that should be trained to carry His Excellency’s People First mantra to the grassroots,” Effiom said.

He disclosed that the government plans to support 150 beneficiaries under the programme, with 100 expected to benefit from direct cash transfers, while others will receive skills acquisition and empowerment support.

Effiom emphasised that the programme is not restricted to members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that beneficiaries would be drawn from different strata of society, including women groups, youth groups, traditional institutions, religious bodies, and other political parties.

He added that the state government is digitising the social register process to enhance transparency, prevent duplication, and reduce political interference in the selection of beneficiaries.

“To fight political interference, we are building the capacity of these officers so they understand the limits of their responsibilities and can ensure that the process remains fair and transparent,” he said.

Also speaking, the State Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme and State Coordinator of the African Union Development Agency/New Partnership for Africa's Development (AUDA-NEPAD, Dr. Prince Michael Nku Abuo, said the 196 Ward Development Officers would act as the “eyes and ears” of the governor at the grassroots.

He explained that the officers were appointed from CRISPON and would work closely with the Social Intervention Office to drive the social investment programme across all wards in the state.

Nku Abuo said the beneficiary selection process would include representatives from churches, Muslim communities, women groups, youth groups, traditional institutions, and both APC and non-APC political actors.

“This programme is structured in such a way that everybody is properly carried along. It is not meant for one political party alone, but for all Cross Riverians who meet the criteria,” he said.

The Chairman of  Cross River State Youth Empowerment Scheme (YES) Dr. Kalita Joseph Aruku, described the training as “very important and critical,” noting that it is a key component of the state’s social investment programme.

He urged young people to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), describing the PVC as a legitimate tool for democratic participation and change.

The Conditional Cash Transfer programme is part of Nigeria’s broader National Social Safety Nets initiative, aimed at reducing poverty and improving the welfare of poor and vulnerable households through targeted financial support and social protection interventions.

Officials said the exercise forms part of a statewide plan to train 196 Ward Development Officers across the 196 council wards of Cross River State, with the Central and Northern Senatorial Districts scheduled for similar training next week.

Nigeria Needs Competence, Not Familiar Faces – Duker

Founder of the Abuja International Film Festival, Dr. Fidelis Duker, has urged Nigerians to place competence and proven capacity above political familiarity in electing leaders, warning that the country's development would remain elusive if voters continue to recycle underperforming politicians under the guise of experience.

Duker made the call while speaking on the state of the nation's leadership and the prospects for Nigeria's democratic future, insisting that leadership should be determined by performance rather than the number of years an individual has spent in public office.

According to him, Nigeria can no longer afford to entrust its future to leaders whose records have failed to inspire confidence, stressing that the nation requires visionary individuals with the competence, integrity and courage to address its mounting socio-economic and governance challenges.

He argued that the tendency to return familiar political figures to positions of authority, despite poor records in previous offices, has contributed significantly to the country's slow pace of development.

"The country must stop confusing longevity in politics with competence. Experience that produces no measurable results should not be rewarded with another opportunity to lead," he said.

The renowned filmmaker noted that genuine leadership is measured by tangible impact on the lives of citizens, not by political connections or the ability to remain relevant within the political establishment.

He urged Nigerians to become more discerning during elections by critically evaluating the track records, vision and capacity of candidates rather than relying on ethnic, religious or partisan sentiments.

Duker maintained that the nation's democratic process would only yield meaningful progress when competence becomes the primary criterion for public office.

He expressed concern over the recurring cycle of poor governance, attributing it partly to the electorate's willingness to overlook past failures in favour of familiar political faces.

According to him, Nigeria possesses abundant human resources capable of transforming the country, but such individuals often remain outside the corridors of power because the political system continues to favour established interests over merit.

He called on political parties to strengthen their internal democratic processes by prioritising credible candidates with demonstrable records of achievement.

Duker further urged young Nigerians and professionals with innovative ideas not to shy away from participating in politics, saying the country's future depends on the emergence of a new generation of competent and accountable leaders.

He expressed optimism that Nigeria could still achieve sustainable development if citizens demand higher standards of leadership and hold elected officials accountable for their performance.

The filmmaker concluded by urging Nigerians to make competence, character and measurable achievements the defining considerations in future elections, insisting that the nation can no longer afford to recycle failure in the name of political experience.
