Nigeria's ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) postponed the screening of its presidential aspirants to May 23 to allow former President Goodluck Jonathan and others to submit their nomination forms after the deadline, TDN has learnt.

It was gathered that the party had also told the screening committee that they were not to screen Presidential aspirants. The screening was supposed to take place on Sunday but was later postponed.

 

The party had also closed the sale of expression of interest and nomination forms last Thursday, while the deadline for the submission of the forms was midnight on Friday.

However, APC National Organising Secretary, Sulaiman Argungu in a statement on Saturday announced that the screening of the presidential aspirants had been shifted to May 23.

 

"The screening for the presidential aspirants, we have so far 28 presidential aspirants.

"As you are all aware, some aspirants have started withdrawing their aspirations. By God's grace, on the 23rd of this month, those who are left will be screened properly," he had said.

A party source, however, revealed on Monday that the action was taken to allow Goodluck Jonathan to submit his nomination and expression of interest forms.

"They did that because they want to give room for Goodluck Jonathan and a few others to submit their forms after the deadline," the source said.

"The party has also told the screening committee that they are not to screen Presidential aspirants."

 

A Northern coalition had purportedly purchased the APC presidential nomination and expression of interest forms for the former President.

 

The forms were purchased days after Jonathan had asked his supporters to "watch out" after he was asked if he would contest.

Jonathan was said to have already joined the Bayelsa chapter of the APC.

Ayade's ineptitude has made Campaigning in Obudu very easy for me - Owan

The APC gubernatorial candidate in Cross River State, senator John Owan Enoh in a bid to taunt the incumbent governor of the state and his closest rival in the governorship race, has said that Sen Prof Ben Ayade has made campaigning in his Obudu home town very easy for him.

The senator, made this statement while addressing a teeming crowd who came to recieve him on Monday in Obudu, after a brief town hall meeting with the traditional leaders of Obudu Local Government Area. 

He said: "Ordinarily coming to campaign in Obudu would have been the most difficult thing. If am governor of Cross River State for one year, for two years, for three years and then for four years. And then election comes, my opponent will not be able to campaign in my local government area, because what I will do in that local government and across the state will make it impossible for anybody to campaign". He insisted.

He used the opportunity to inform the good people of Obudu that he does not hate Ayade and ordinarily, he wouldn't have contested for the gubernatorial race if the incumbent government had lived up-to expectations. 

  

"Our brother and my friend has made campaigning in Obudu very easy. You see all these little  projects going on in Obudu, I am the one who is going to complete them".

"I have seen some little works going on as a governor you don't need to decieve your people. When you where elected, governor of the state with monthly allocation and you wait for few months before the elections and you come and deceive your people with little projects. You don't deceive your people, you love them". 

"If, God forbid, Ayade wins his second term bid, he will still not complete these little projects, so why don't you vote for John Owan Enoh that you know will talk and do you". He concluded 

Earlier on, the distinguished senator had paid the a visit to the newly elected Paramount Ruler of Obanliku Local Government Area, His Royal Highness Emis Etim where he solicited for their prayers and support.

Addressing the Royal fathers, Sen John Owan Enoh said The 2019 election is not about the North, South or Central Senatorial districts, but he is in the race to rescue the state, due to Ayade's inability to perform maxiwho hasn't functions well. 

He said If given the mandate to be governor of the state, he will ensure the cattle ranch, Bebi Airstrip, and the Mountain Race are revived believing these are some of the major sources of income and development for the  Obanliku people. 

He told the Royal fathers that unlike, the incumbent governor, Sen Prof Ben Ayade, he will not wait for three and a half years before giving the paramount rulers in the state  cars while calling on them to challenge him with their votes and see if he will not come back to thank them unlike Ayade who has never visited them since he became governor, despite the proximity to his Obudu home town where he visits frequently. 

Responding, the paramount ruler, thanked the senator for deeming it fit to begin his gubernatorial campaigns with Obanliku. He used to opportunity to plead with the gubernatorial candidate to look into a better welfare package for Royal Fathers in the state. He noted that their current welfare package is nothing to write home about.

He also pleaded with the guber candidate to as a matter of urgency, even before the elections try and provide vehicles for the police station so it will enable them curb crime in the area. 

The Royal father also noted that politicians are fun of looking down on traditional leaders, forgetting that Royal fathers are spiritual men who see both in the day and night and can disappear and appear. He made it clear that though, they are nonpartisan but have a great deal of influence during elections as they are the home of all political parties.
