The Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission, CROSIEC has announced the postponement of the 2023 local government election to 23rd October 2023.
This was made known in a press statement released Tuesday afternoon stating that the elections will be rescheduled due to budgetary concerns.
The statement issued by CROSIEC Chairman, Associate Professor Mike Ushie on Tuesday reads in parts:
“The reschedule is due to budgetary concerns as the approved 2023 Local Government Council elections is captured in the 2023 appropriation with no supplementary provision in the 2022 budget,"
Recall that the LG elections was initially fixed for May 24th 2023 as announced sometime in July 2022.
The commission said the action was in line with Section 24 (2) of the Electoral Act 2022 as amended. Also, political parties are to sign and collect the rescheduled timetable at its headquarters in Calabar and said that the guidelines remain unchanged.
What this means is that at the expiration of the tenure of the current Local Government leaders, which ends on the 1st of June, 2023, the 18 Local Government Areas will be maned by caretaker committees.
