Member representing Akamkpa/Biase Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, Rt. Hon. Daniel Asuquo has said that he will continue to be a loud voice for his people even as he seeks elevation to the red chambers.
Asuquo who was reacting to an Appeal Court judgement which set aside the judgement of a federal high court sitting in Calabar which had disqualified him from partaking in the February 2023 general elections.
The Appeal Court judgment was in response to the High Court judgment which His Lordship, Justice Haruna Simon Tsammani held that Section 284 (14) C, does not extend the frontiers of challenging the nomination of candidates in another party, therefore, the judgment of the lower was set aside. Therefore, the APC has no locus standi to challenge the nomination of Rt. Hon. Daniel Asuquo as the senatorial candidate for Labour Party representing Cross River South Senatorial District, hence, their actions and inaction were best described as the handiwork of meddlesome interlopers.
Reacting to the judgment, Rt. Hon. Daniel Asuquo said that the judgment of the Appeal Court has restored the hope of the common man in the judiciary. It was quite funny when we were served with court papers challenging my candidacy. I have tried to make sense of the entire process until the High Court judgment. I was among those that amended the electoral act of 2022, it was rather strange that I built a house, locked all the doors, and threw away the keys.
Today, the Appeal Court has pointed us in the right direction, but then I keep wondering why the APC through their candidate took me to court in the first place. The processes of electioneering and the election itself allow each candidate to sell themselves to the masses. I have tried to stay within the precinct of these nuances by engaging the people of Cross River South, the people I want to represent, yet, the APC wants to get to the senate through the back door, through the court. It's high time we end back-door politics, never again shall we have court senators and court governors, etc.
"I am using this medium to reiterate my stand to the people of Cross River South, that I will be a loud voice to the people, and whatever is shared at the national, every Ten Kobo shared will be brought to the people of Cross River South. I will make other senatorial districts envious of the Cross River South, from job opportunities, empowerment, healthcare delivery, scholarship, etc.
A few months ago, the media was awash by the news of the disqualification of Rt. Hon. Daniel Asuquo in what the APC through their candidate claimed was the case of faulty nomination, not a member of the Labour Party, signing of two nomination forms, and other sundry prayers. The High Court in her judgment held to these prayers and wrongfully disqualified Dansuki. All of these are now history as the Appeal Court has validated his nomination.
