CALABAR – The Chairman of the Youth Council of Nigeria (YCN), Cross River State Chapter, Comrade Emmanuel Olayi, has charged outgoing members of the 12th Senate of the Students' Union Government (SUG) of the University of Calabar to build on the friendships, networks, knowledge, and leadership experiences acquired during their tenure, stressing that such relationships would remain valuable long after their stay in the university.
Olayi, who is a former Speaker of the Students' Union Parliament of the University of Calabar, gave the charge while speaking at the Valedictory Session marking the end of the tenure of the 12th SUG Senate, led by Senate President Senator Edwin Ogar.
Reflecting on his own experience as a student leader, Olayi described his participation in the event as nostalgic and deeply reflective, noting that his years in student leadership had provided him with invaluable lessons and relationships that continue to shape his personal and professional journey.
He urged the outgoing senators to remain committed to the ideals of service, integrity, and responsible leadership, emphasizing that the friendships and networks formed during their time in office could become important assets in their future careers and endeavours.
"The relationships you have built, the experiences you have gained, and the knowledge you have acquired through service will continue to serve you beyond the university environment. Build on them and allow them to open doors for greater opportunities in the future," he said.
Also speaking at the event, Amb. Dr. Jerry Etta, Emeritus Speaker of the Students' Union Parliament and a scholar of the University of Calabar, delivered a keynote address on the theme, "Commemorating Excellence in Students' Governance."
Etta charged the outgoing student legislators to be worthy ambassadors of both the Senate and the University, noting that parliamentary institutions across the world are composed of exceptional individuals entrusted with the responsibility of serving as the conscience, mirror, and watchdog of governance.
According to him, the primary duty of legislators is to ensure that the voices and interests of the people they represent are heard and protected at all times.
The event also featured the presentation of awards to deserving individuals. Olayi was honoured with a Special Award of Service in recognition of his contributions as a former leader of the Students' Union Parliament and his continued support for student leadership development.
Expressing appreciation for the recognition, Olayi commended the leadership of the 12th Senate for their service to students and the university community and wished them success in their future endeavours.
He also lauded the Chairperson of the Valedictory Session Planning Committee, Senator Patricia Onigah, and members of her team for organizing a successful and memorable event.
The valedictory session attracted current and former student leaders, university stakeholders, and guests who gathered to celebrate the achievements and contributions of the outgoing Senate.
