CALABAR, — The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has projected a massive economic and tourism windfall for Cross River State as it prepares to host the 28th edition of the Nigerian University Games Association (Nigerian University Games Association) Games, with an estimated 50,000 athletes, officials, and support personnel expected to converge on Calabar in November 2026.
The Vice Chancellor of UNICAL, Professor Offiong E. Offiong, disclosed this during a national and international press conference held ahead of the Games, where he formally announced that the event will run from November 14 to 24, 2026.
According to him, the Games represent more than a sporting competition, describing it as a strategic investment in youth development, national unity, and economic stimulation, with far-reaching benefits for the host state and surrounding communities.
Professor Offiong noted that the influx of participants is expected to significantly boost key sectors of the Cross River economy, including hospitality, transportation, tourism, retail trade, and small business services, as Calabar prepares to welcome one of the largest gatherings in Nigerian university sports history.
He explained that the University of Calabar is fully prepared to host athletes and officials from universities across the country, emphasizing that the institution is committed to delivering a world-class sporting experience anchored on integrity, excellence, and fair play.
The Vice Chancellor also highlighted that the Games would serve as a catalyst for infrastructure development within the university, particularly the upgrade and construction of modern sports facilities that will outlive the competition and serve future generations of students and athletes.
He further stressed that the successful hosting of the event would be achieved through strong collaboration with the Cross River State Government, corporate partners, alumni networks, and other stakeholders, describing their involvement as critical to delivering a successful and impactful Games.
According to him, the media will play a central role in amplifying the visibility of the Games, building public enthusiasm, and positioning Calabar as a premier destination for sports tourism in Nigeria and beyond.
Professor Offiong also appealed to the NUGA Council for continued cooperation and support, noting that UNICAL remains committed to upholding the highest standards required for hosting a national multi-sport event of such magnitude.
Analysts say the 28th NUGA Games could become one of the most significant non-oil economic drivers for Cross River State in 2026, with projections pointing to increased hotel occupancy rates, expanded informal sector earnings, and heightened investor interest in the state’s tourism and events ecosystem.
The Games are expected to serve as a platform for talent discovery, youth engagement, and national integration, while also reinforcing Calabar’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s most peaceful and event-friendly cities.
