To herald a political shift within Akamkpa,  nay Cross River State, Pastor Hon. Raymond C. Asuquo, the former Chapter Chairman of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Akamkpa, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) alongside a formidable wave of followers, signaling a strategic blow to the PDP. Asuquo's defection, announced at the APC's campaign grand finale at the Akamkpa Local Government Council reflects disillusionment with the internal workings of the PDP and his aspirations to realign his political efforts for local and national impact.

Pastor Asuquo, who served as PDP Chapter Chairman from April 2019 until the last Congress, was well-regarded for his instrumental role in party coordination, having also served as the coordinator for all chapter chairmen across the state during the first two years of his tenure. Known for his adept strategic planning, Asuquo orchestrated key party activities, working tirelessly to strengthen the PDP's influence. However, the pervasive internal discord and what he described as a "constitutional disconnect" within the party ultimately led to his decision to depart.

Asuquo further lamented the absence of a robust reconciliation mechanism within the PDP, claiming it had become "rudderless" under the ineffective leadership of the current state executive. He highlighted a disconnect between the party's national and state directives and its foundational principles, stressing that the leadership's operational methods have strayed far from the party's constitution. "The PDP's framework has diverged from its founding values, making it increasingly difficult to fulfill the party's mission," Asuquo noted.

Beyond procedural grievances, Pastor Asuquo emphasised the primacy of "local politics" as a driving factor in his decision. "Politics is local," he stated, underscoring his desire to unite with fellow Akamkpa natives, respected political allies, and notable figures to propel both his community and the nation forward. By joining the ruling APC, Asuquo believes he can better serve his people and make impactful contributions that align with his vision for sustainable local and state development.

The dynamic grassroots politician, who previously served as a councillor representing Uyanga Ward in Akamkpa's 4th Legislative Council and held the position of deputy leader, expressed optimism about his new political platform. Asuquo also acknowledged his past role as the co-founder of the PDP Rescue Mission International, an organisation aimed at salvaging the PDP from what he saw as inevitable decline. Despite his best efforts to support the party's revival, he conceded that internal forces stymied progress, making his continued loyalty untenable.

The mass defection saw key figures from various political affiliations join Asuquo's ranks, including prominent Labour Party members and other PDP stalwarts from different wards. According to reports, numerous influential local figures who have grown frustrated with PDP's leadership have joined the APC, signaling a tectonic shift in Akamkpa's political landscape. The once-diverse political affiliations within the local government now appear to coalesce around the APC, setting the stage for a stronghold in the state.

As the former liaison officer for Hon. Chief Daniel E. Asuquo, a former member of the House of Representatives, Pastor Asuquo's move to the APC underscores his vision for consolidating efforts with influential players. He conveyed confidence that the APC's inclusiveness and forward-looking approach present the best path to meet Akamkpa's evolving needs.

Observers of Cross River politics view Asuquo's defection as more than symbolic; it portends a seismic shift in the state's political dynamics, as numerous PDP supporters are expected to follow his lead. The recent wave of defections hints at the potential dissolution of the PDP's stronghold in Akamkpa, where local sentiment now favours the APC as the party poised to drive meaningful change.

With his exit, Asuquo issued a final rebuke to the PDP, stating, "This exodus is a testament to the need for change. For those of us committed to real progress, the APC offers a platform for genuine leadership." His defection, alongside a substantial cohort, marks a turning point in the state's political trajectory, positioning the APC as the vanguard of Cross River State's future.

Understanding Governor Bassey Otu 's People First Mantra And The Economic Importance Of The Bakassi Deep Seaport Port.

On May 29, 2023, when the current Governor  Bassey Edet Otu took over office as the fourth democratically elected governor of Cross River State in the current fourth republic, expectations were high and the yearnings of Cross Riverians were almost felt. 

Governor Bassey Otu arrived at the rostrum of leadership of the state with a burden of over 4.5 million Cross Riverians who at the time, had lost hope in public governance, it became pertinent for citizens to be reassured to have faith in public governance and importantly,,  the need for the self worth and value of  Cross Riverians to be raised. The governor understood the challenges and promptly came up with the now popular "People First" Mantra

The mantra meant that once again, citizens could have confidence in the government, it meant that government was ready to make the welfare and well-being of citizens a priority, it meant that the value and self worth of citizens will be considered in all decisions of government and above all, it meant that the governor was going to put the people first in all his consideration, including his programs and policies. Little wonder  why  during his inaugural speech, Governor Bassey Edet Otu had openly committed " Dear Cross Riverians, I commit to you and my God, to at all times, put you first in all my considerations " 

About a year and six months after his swearing-in, , the governor has proven that he is a man of his words. His programs and policies have so far shown that the people are his priority. For example, he came in to meet a backlog of unpaid gratuity of pensioners of over 10 years running into several billions of naira. Today, several of our pensioners are smiling to the bank to get their reward after many years of sacrifice and service to the state. 

In the area of infrastructure including the provision of basic amenities good roads, access to basic healthcare facilities, security of lives and properties etc, the governor has performed incredibly well. Only last year, the governor, through the State ministry of education,  facilitated the payment of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) for over 11,000 secondary school students of Cross River origin amounting to over  N400 million . If all these are not putting the People First, I wonder what it is. 

Recently, the governor was able to secure about $3.5 billion funding for the Bakassi Deep Seaport. It is important to emphasize that this is about the first funding facility that the African financial giant  AFREXIM bank would put out for a sub-national. What this means is that the integrity, policy and programs, including the obvious  financial prudence of governor Bassey Edet Otu has been tested, tried and proven to be genuine by one of the global financial financiers and advisors. 

The economic implications of this laudable initiative is that, the state will become a powerful player in the maritime  sub-sector of Nigeria with an open market in  the  southern -south and south east of Nigeria, Including mopping up the financial benefits around the entire maritime business in the Lake Chad basin, and the Gulf of Guinea. Apart from the main transaction of major key players in the maritime  sector, the massive value-chain, such business comes with, cannot be quantified. The completion and eventual take-off of business activities at the Bakassi Deep Seaport will see the emergence of several other businesses like, fabrication industries, boat maintenance  and repair services, supply of all kind of goods and services etc

Governor Bassey Otu is no doubt, a visionary leader, who is indeed determined to put the people first in all that he does. One can only pray that his visions and policies will be massively supported by the government at the center in order to bring about the much needed prosperity of citizens.

IFAD Joins C'River Agric Ministry to Celebrate World Food Day 2024

CALABAR — The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), through its Livelihood Improvement Family Enterprises-Niger Delta (LIFE-ND) project, played a prominent role in the 2024 World Food Day celebrations in Cross River State. The event, coordinated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, showcased several activities aimed at addressing food security and sustainability, with IFAD's contributions taking center stage.

Speaking at the event, the State Project Coordinator for IFAD-LIFE ND, Mr Innocent Moses Ogbim acknowledged the critical challenges facing global and local food security, including hunger, climate change, inflation, and insecurity. He emphasized the need for government policies that reflect these realities. He called for increased investment in human capacity development, especially in research and development, which he argued would boost the success of agribusiness initiatives and help alleviate food insecurity.

Highlighting the impact of the IFAD-LIFE ND project, he noted that the initiative has successfully engaged numerous young people in agricultural ventures, contributing to food security and economic empowerment for women and youth in the Niger Delta.

During a panel discussion, experts echoed similar sentiments, stressing that achieving food security and ensuring the right to food requires a sustainable and efficient agricultural system. They pointed out that the state's current focus on subsistence farming limits productivity. Instead, the emphasis should be on improving access to inputs like high-yield crop varieties to increase food production.

One panelist explained, "Food security starts with the availability of food, followed by its accessibility and affordability. Right to food means ensuring that food is safe and nutritious for all." Another added, "We must move beyond the idea of a 'balanced diet' to an 'adequate diet,' ensuring that the food we consume meets our bodies' needs and supports our health." The discussion also highlighted the importance of ongoing government initiatives, such as food fortification, which ensures essential nutrients are available in everyday diets.

In his address, the Cross River State Commissioner for Agriculture and Irrigation Development, Hon. Johnson Andiambey Ebokpo (KSM), said the theme for this year's celebration, "Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future," was apt, relevant and timely. He noted that it aligns perfectly with the priorities of the administration of Governor Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu. Under the "People First" agenda, the governor has emphasized the need for food availability, accessibility, and sustainability to improve the quality of life for all Cross Riverians.

The Commissioner also hinted on some of the state's major agricultural initiatives, including the development of 12,000 hectares for six new cocoa estates and the procurement of 3.5 million sprouted oil palm nuts to support smallholder farmers. Furthermore, the establishment of 2,000 hectares for arable crop production in Odukpani Local Government Area and recent statewide irrigation infrastructure projects were described as significant steps towards year-round food production.

"The governor's leadership is dedicated to improving lives through these transformative agricultural projects," said Ebokpo. "We are united in our efforts to combat hunger, improve livelihoods, and eradicate poverty."

The Commissioner concluded by urging all stakeholders—including agricultural clusters, local governments, and NGOs—to actively support these initiatives, which are crucial to transforming the agricultural landscape of Cross River State and beyond.

CALABAR - The Leadership of Labour Party in Cross River State led by Rt. Hon. Daniel Asuquo, AKA 'Dansuki' former lawmaker and Labour Party Southern Senatorial District candidate for the 2023 election has called on the governor of Cross River State to reciprocate the kind gesture meted on him by the party during the 2023 governorship race where the party overwhelmingly supported and voted for him. 

Dansuki said the party supported and voted for Prince Otu to become governor and it's time for the governor to honour the party by ensuring a level playing ground in the forthcoming Local Government Elections and allow the people's votes to count. 

He said the party has an unfinished business with the governor which is the People's First and that means the people's votes must count and the peoples will must be respected in the forthcoming elections. 

The former lawmaker who was speaking during the formal declaration of intent by the Calabar Municipality Chairmanship candidate, Hon. Shadrach Ikpeme (Papa Ikpeme) of Labour Party recently held in Calabar encouraged party members to be statefast and do the needful as God will crown their efforts with success. 

"Labour Party supported the governor of Cross River State, we didn't not support APC, we support Prince Otu as a person, we supported him as our governor, and we have an unfinished business with him. And the unfinished business we have with him is the 'People First'. The People First means the people's voice must count, the People's vote must count and the will od the People must previous over personal interest". He said. 

"To change Cross River State, the governor promised People First, and we are seeing the dividends of democracy, and the dividends of democracy must also represent the people's choice." He concluded. 

Papa Ikpeme who shared his blueprint for Calabar Municipality said he is ready to revolutionise agriculture in Calabar Municipality, ensure a functional health care delivery system by focusing on improving quality primary healthcare. He added that Education will be given a place of pride in his administration as he intend to improve on the federal government initiated home grown feeding  program while ensuring a conducive learning and teaching environment in public schools within Municipality. 

Labour Party Affirms Papa Ikpeme as Chairmanship Candidate for Calabar Municipality

CALABAR — The Labour Party (LP) in Cross River state, under the leadership of Ogar Osim, has officially affirmed Shedrach 'Papa' Ikpeme as their candidate for the upcoming local government elections in Calabar Municipality. This affirmation took place on Tuesday, 15 October 2024, during a well-attended party convergence featuring members of the Party's State Executive Committee (EXCO) and other stakeholders. 

Ikpeme's emergence as the Labour Party's flag bearer came after his opponents in the race voluntarily withdrew, clearing the path for him. These withdrawals occurred in the spirit of unity, with the former aspirants pledging their support for Ikpeme ahead of the 2 November, 2024 elections. Ikpeme, while addressing the gathering, expressed his readiness to serve the people, promising to deliver impactful governance that will uplift the residents of Calabar Municipality.

"I am ready to serve the people and bring about more prosperity in Calabar Municipality," Ikpeme stated. "The people deserve to enjoy the dividends of democracy without having to worry about where their next meal is coming from or how to pay their rent."

In his remarks, Ogar Osim, the Chairman of the Labour Party in Cross River state, urged party members and the general public to come out in large numbers to support Ikpeme on election day. He emphasized that the Labour Party remains committed to the welfare of the people and called for collective action to secure victory in the forthcoming polls.

Recall that Ikpeme's candidacy for the chairmanship of Calabar Municipality became more apparent following the withdrawal of two major rivals. Hon. Edet Omin of Ward 10 and Mr. Ita Ayi, the Personal Assistant to Rt. Hon. Bassey Akiba from Ward 8, both stepped down from the race, paving the way for Ikpeme to become the Labour Party's presumptive candidate.

Hon. Edet Omin officially withdrew his candidacy on 30 September, while Mr. Ita Ayi followed suit on October 1, citing internal party crises as a reason for his decision. Ayi stressed the need for reconciliation and unity within the Labour Party before engaging in leadership contests. On the other hand, Omin noted that since both he and Ikpeme shared a common vision for the party and Calabar Municipality, he decided to support Ikpeme's bid.

In a related development, the Labour Party received a significant legal boost following a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja on Tuesday, 8 October, 2024. Justice Emeka Nwite declared the Labour Party's national convention, held in Nnewi in March, valid and in accordance with the laws of the country. The court also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize and uphold the leadership of Barrister Julius Abure as the party's National Chairman.

Akamkpa in the Eyes of the Storm as Works Commissioner Plans to Impose Mother-In-Law as Chairman

The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Hon. Ankpo Pius Edet, is allegedly pushing to impose his mother-in-law, Mrs. Titi Ndifon, as the consensus candidate for the chairmanship position of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akamkpa Local Government Area. This controversial move comes after a failed attempt to promote his wife, Hon. Mary Ankpo, for the same position, a plan that was abandoned following widespread negative publicity.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that the imposition of Mrs. Ndifon was secured through a 70 million Naira bribe paid to the committee responsible for screening the chairmanship aspirants. This alleged payment was reportedly made to ensure Mrs. Ndifon's candidacy is upheld, despite opposition from various quarters within the community and party structure.

Observers have expressed concerns that Hon. Pius Ankpo's actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the interests of his community, which has several other qualified aspirants. Critics argue that his push for Mrs. Ndifon as the consensus candidate ignores the historical fact that Uyanga Ward, where he hails from, has never produced a chairman, unlike Iko Ward, which once had Hon. Ntufam Matthew Olory.

Sources close to the political scene in Akamkpa have further revealed that Hon. Ankpo is embittered with his community, although the reasons for this sentiment remain unclear. His actions have raised eyebrows and stirred discontent, with many seeing the latest move as an attempt to consolidate personal and family influence over the local political landscape.

The politics surrounding the chairmanship race in Akamkpa has taken an ugly turn, with reports of scandalous dealings, including alleged attempts to use coercion and inducements to secure the top seat. According to insiders, the situation has deteriorated to a point where sex scandals are reportedly being exploited to influence decisions, casting a shadow over the local government's political integrity.

Efforts to reach Hon. Pius Ankpo for comments on the matter have proven unsuccessful, as his phone has remained unreachable. This lack of response has further fueled speculations and uncertainty over his intentions and strategies concerning the chairmanship position.

The recent developments have left Akamkpa residents on edge, as the tussle for political dominance in the local government continues to unfold. Party stakeholders and community leaders are now closely watching the situation, awaiting clarity on who will ultimately emerge as the APC's consensus candidate for the chairmanship race.

With tensions rising, many are hoping for a resolution that reflects fairness and respect for the wishes of the broader community, rather than the interests of a few individuals seeking to extend their influence through family ties as against micro zoning between the Ejagham and Dusanga Iyong Iyong, with the former having representation across their three political wards either as chairman or house of assembly member or both and Dusanga Iyong Iyong with Iko Ward producing both Chairman and house of assembly member and Uyanga has neither produced Chairman or house of assembly member except for vice chairmanship position.

CRBDA Refutes Allegations of Missing Tractor, Sets the Record Straight

The Cross River Basin Development Authority (CRBDA) has firmly denied reports about the alleged theft of a tractor, clarifying the circumstances surrounding the incident. Dr. Jackson, the Director of Finance and Administration and spokesperson for the Authority, explained that the management's choice to pursue legal action rather than engage publicly has led to misunderstandings and the spread of inaccurate information.

"We opted to take the case to court because we believed that was the proper course of action," Dr. Jackson stated. "There was no need to address the press prematurely, but unfortunately, this has given rise to a skewed report that does not reflect the true situation. The narrative presented not only paints the management in a negative light but also buries the actual facts."

The controversy began when Mr. Mission Daniel, a tractor operator with the Authority, arrived at the premises with a letter claiming to authorize the movement of the tractor for an audit inspection. The letter, allegedly signed by Mr. Umana, the Commercial Officer and Personal Assistant to the Managing Director, was presented to Mr. Ikon, the Chief Security Officer. However, doubts about the letter's authenticity led to a decision to delay the movement until further verification.

Despite this, the tractor was later found to have been removed without proper authorization. Mr. Mission, when questioned, denied knowledge of its whereabouts. Further investigation revealed that Mr. Umana, who was cited as the signatory of the letter, was not in town at the time, casting doubt on Mr. Mission's claims. The case was subsequently handed over to the police.

Further investigation by our reporter from another source who does not want his name in print reveals that, he convinced the Chief Security and finally moved the tractor out. And since the acclaimed letter of authorisation was not with an acknowledgement copy, he promised to photocopy same to submit to the security unit. However, upon his return, and when confronted, he told a different tale leaving the chief security confused and blank.

In an attempt to deflect attention, Mr. Mission later alleged that the tractor might have been taken to the Managing Director's farm in Akpabuyo, citing the discovery of a similar tractor bucket. However, CRBDA management has refuted this claim, labelling it as part of a deliberate effort to mislead and divert from the actual issue of unauthorized removal.

Attempts by our reporter to get further clarification from Mr. Mission were unsuccessful, as he declined comments, citing the ongoing legal proceedings. "Don't waste your airtime; management has taken this matter to court, and I have no further comments," he said. Later, he directed our reporter to contact his lawyer, Barr. Ayie E. Okpa, but all calls to the lawyer remained unanswered at the time of this report.

An internal review has revealed a significant administrative loophole, with no existing system for operators to sign out and sign in machinery, leaving the Authority vulnerable to such incidents. Additionally, a staff member who spoke under anonymity expressed concerns, stating, "The agency has always operated like a family, and this freedom has now been exploited, leading to a crime of this magnitude. I fear for the outcome, considering the scale of this theft."

CRBDA management has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and has promised to address any internal shortcomings to prevent future incidents. "We will not allow false claims to distort the truth. Legal processes are ongoing, and we are determined to ensure that the facts come to light," Dr. Jackson added.

LG Polls: Akamkpa APC Leaders Push for Male Leadership Amid Rising Security and Governance Challenges Our Reporter | 11th October 2024

CALABAR - In light of the forthcoming All Progressives Congress (APC) primary for the chairmanship and Ward Councilors positions across the 18 Local Government Areas and 179 council wards of Cross River State, chieftains of the party in Akamkpa Local Government Area have voiced their collective support for the selection of a male leader.

Stakeholders of the party who met under the aegis of the APC Victory and Success Support Group cited the pressing security, social, and economic challenges facing in the area as reasons behind their decision. the leaders highlighted the need for firm leadership to address the local government's volatile security situation, the rising incidence of cultism, and the alarming rate of kidnapping and drug abuse.

Contained in a communiqué signed by several notable chieftains of the party, including Ntufam Roland Itambu, Obod Cletus Ikey, and Charity Orok, the group emphasized the critical need for a leader who is brave, audacious, and resolute in tackling these issues. While recognising the contributions of women good governance they argued that the current climate requires a leader with a track record of confronting and neutralizing threats.

In recognition of the upcoming leadership primary for Chairman of Akamkpa Local Government Council, we, the chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akamkpa under the aegis of APC Victory and Success Support Group have convened to deliberate on the critical needs of our constituency at this juncture. While we have unwavering respect for the women in our midst and acknowledge their potential in governance, we believe that the unique challenges facing our local government require leadership that is specifically equipped to handle the pressing realities of today. It is, therefore, our considered position that the timing for a woman to serve as chairman is inopportune given the present circumstances.

1. Volatile Security System: A Call for a Brave Leader

Akamkpa faces an unprecedented level of volatility in its security environment. The complexities of maintaining law and order in the face of growing unrest demand a leader who can respond with both bravery and tenacity. The leader we need at this moment is one who can confront these challenges head-on, make swift and decisive security-related decisions, and restore confidence among the people. While we do not doubt the courage of our womenfolk, the gravity of the current security situation calls for someone with a proven track record in such volatile environments.

2. High Incidence of Cultism: Daring the System

Cultism has permeated several facets of our society, creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation. Addressing this menace requires a chairman who is not only audacious but also resolute in dismantling the structures that enable cult-related activities. This is not a battle that can be won through rhetoric alone. It requires a leader who will dare the system, confront entrenched interests, and neutralize these criminal networks. Such a leader must have the grit to face down threats and the stamina to endure the long and often dangerous process of rooting out cultism.

3. Kidnapping: A Need for Unyielding Resolve

Kidnapping has become a scourge that terrorizes our communities, affecting the everyday lives of citizens. Confronting this evil requires more than token gestures—it demands a leader with the sheer will to challenge the status quo and confront the perpetrators without hesitation. The time for appeasement or hesitation has passed. What Akamkpa requires now is a leader who can inspire confidence through strength, who can take the fight to the kidnappers and restore peace and normalcy to our communities.

4. Drug Abuse: A Leader Ready to Take Action

The pervasive spread of drug abuse, particularly among the youth, is a ticking time bomb that threatens to unravel the social fabric of our community. A leader who takes office at this time must be willing to roll up their sleeves and work tirelessly to implement not only punitive measures but also meaningful rehabilitation initiatives. The task ahead is enormous and requires an individual who is prepared to work round the clock to eradicate this scourge from our midst. Akamkpa needs a leader who can take immediate and decisive action to curb drug abuse before it engulfs the community.

5. Akamkpa Needs a Reformer: The Call for a Dogged Leader

The docility that has characterized the political and economic environment in Akamkpa is a cause for concern. Our local government needs more than just political leadership—it needs reform. At this critical juncture, a dogged and visionary reformer is required to revitalize both the political and economic structures of Akamkpa. The reforms that are necessary to put Akamkpa back on the path to progress require a leader with the grit and determination to challenge the existing order and bring about meaningful change.

6. Balancing the Narrative: Akamkpa is Not Defined by Social Vices

It is important to clarify that this communiqué does not seek to paint Akamkpa as a community deeply rooted in social vices and negative trends. Rather, it highlights the urgency of addressing the challenges that have recently taken root. These challenges, left unaddressed, will only further erode the gains we have made. We believe Akamkpa has the potential for greatness, but it will take strong leadership to harness that potential and steer the local government toward a brighter future.

We unequivocally acknowledge the strength, capability, and potential of the women in Akamkpa. This communiqué is not an indictment of their qualifications or abilities. We hold our womenfolk in high esteem, and we recognize their contributions to both governance and societal development. However, the unique circumstances confronting Akamkpa at this time require a specific kind of leadership—one that is equipped to tackle the immediate and pressing challenges we face.

8. Restoring Normalcy as a Precondition for Seamless Female Leadership

Once we have confronted and overcome the security, social, and economic challenges currently facing the local government, we will be in a position to embrace seamless leadership transitions that will undoubtedly see women ascend to the highest levels of governance. Now, more than ever, we must focus on stabilizing the political landscape to make room for future progress.

CALABAR, —Labour Party (LP) Calabar Municipality Chairmanship aspirant, Mr. Papa Ikpeme, has pledged to abolish what he describes as "unfair taxation" levied on traders at Marian Market if elected into office. This promise was made in response to a social media conversation highlighting the multiple levies previously imposed on market traders, including a Chairman's levy, Chairman's wife levy, and a touts levy.

The issue was first raised by Efio-Ita Nyok a social media user on Cross River cyberspace, who noted that traders in the popular Marian Market were subjected to multiple levies. "Do you know that traders at Marian Market paid Chairman's levy, Chairman's wife levy, and touts levy?" Nyok asked, prompting a discussion about the harsh realities faced by market traders.

Reacting to the post, Ikpeme voiced concern about the struggles of vulnerable traders, particularly the elderly, who, aside from providing for themselves, are compelled to pay what he termed as "cruel" and unfair charges. He remarked, "The thought of an old woman struggling to feed and get meds, and still have to struggle to give money to guys who worked for a party or person is cruel."

In a firm response, Ikpeme expressed his intention to end this exploitative practice, which he believes unfairly burdens struggling traders. He told journalists that he will implement Resolution 70 of the Cross River State House of Assembly (CRSHA) as well as the Presumptive Tax Law No. 8 of 2023. "I will stop unfair taxation," he stated, making it a key point in his campaign manifesto for the forthcoming local government elections.

Chairman Aspirant, Calabar Municipality 

Eta Ekong Imona is a native of both Big Qua Clan and Ishie Clan in Calabar Municipality, Cross River State. Born into a Christian family affiliated with the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, Big Qua Town Parish, Eta is a devoted husband and father. He began his educational journey at Auntie Margaret International School (AMIS), where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC) in 1989. He then progressed to the renowned Hope Waddell Training Institute, completing his Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) in 1995.

Driven by a passion for environmental stewardship, Eta gained admission to the University of Calabar, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree (B.Sc) in Environmental Protection Management from the Department of Geography & Regional Planning in 2004. During his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Zuru LGA, Kebbi State, he served as a Geography teacher at the Federal Science & Technical College, Zuru.

Eta's commitment to continuous professional development led him to obtain a certificate from the Waste Management Society of Nigeria (WMSN) in 2008. He is also a trained and certified oil spill remediator and safety manager as of 2015. He began his professional career at the Cross River State Emergency Response Centre (ERC) as a support staff, where he was extensively trained in firefighting, security operations, and served in the office of the State Security Adviser from 2007 to 2012.

Subsequently, he transitioned into private service and successfully managed several hospitality establishments, including Marina Resort Hotel, Orange Resort, Michelle Suite Hotels, and Viaaem Hotel. Eta Imona has proven himself as an adept administrator, capable of delivering on complex assignments with minimal supervision.

His leadership qualities extend beyond professional settings. He is the immediate past President General of the Qua Clans Youth Assembly and has served as Coordinator of the Calabar Municipality Youth Leaders Forum. In addition, he is a member of the Ndidem of the Quas / Paramount Ruler of Calabar Municipality Traditional Court.

A seasoned politician, Eta once aspired to represent Calabar Municipality State Constituency in the Cross River State House of Assembly. His candidacy was highly commended by the Department of State Services (DSS) for conducting one of the healthiest consultations. He is a committed stakeholder in Ward Four (4), having served as Secretary of the Edim Inok Campaign Council, and as a member of both the Asuquo Ekpeyong Campaign Organization and the State Mobilization Committee for Senator Prince Bassey Otu.

Beyond his professional and political engagements, Eta is a lover of contemporary music and an accomplished instrumentalist, particularly skilled with the bass guitar. He is also a respected political analyst.
