Introduction 

On June 13, 2023, the 10th Senate was inaugurated with the emergence of Senator Godswill Akpabio, GCON as President of the Nigeria Senate. Today, the Senate clocks 2 years, this is therefore a mid-term review of performance of Distinguished Senator Eteng Jonah Williams, Representing Cross River Central Senatorial District.

In two years, Senator Eteng Williams showcases an enviable scorecard of effective representation as a legislator par excellence. His track record in the Senate is marked by the sponsorship of relevant bills, consistent constituency outreach, community interventions, human capacity development and empowerments. 

 

Bills and Motions: 

Senator Williams has demonstrated legislative prowess by sponsoring the following bills:

1. Federal Medical Centres Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024 (SB 525), which seeks to establish the Federal Medical Centre in Ugep. This institution will eliminate the burden of long-distance travel for tertiary medical care, bringing state-of-the-art healthcare closer to the people of Cross River Central

 

2. Chartered Institute of Petroleum and Gas Engineers of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill, 2024: Currently awaiting its third and final reading, the bill seeks to enhance professionalism within the petroleum and gas engineering sector in the country. Key objectives of the bill include improving collaboration between academia and the industry, raising professional standards to meet international best practices, and creating a platform for networking among professionals.

Senator Williams has proactively addressed pressing national issues through critical motions, including:

1. Relief Support for Citizens Affected by Communal Clashes: Advocating federal intervention for victims of the Ovonum and Ofatura communal conflict.

2. Curbing Illegal Oil Exploitation in Nigeria: Addressing the economic and environmental dangers of unregulated oil activities.

3. Security and Protection for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs): Ensuring government action to safeguard displaced populations in Cross River Central.

4. Revitalization of Technical and Vocational Education: A motion calling for urgent measures to salvage Nigeria's collapsing technical education sector.

Solar Powered Boreholes:

To ensure sustainable water supply, particularly in regions that suffer from water scarcity.

Solar-Powered Street Lights:

In line with his 'Project Light Up Central' Initiative, Senator Eteng Williams have installed quality solar lights in the following communities: 

1. Yakurr LGA – Ugep, Ekori, Idomi, Mkpani, Inyima, Assiga, Nko, Idomi

2. Obubra LGA - Obubra Urban, Oderegha/Ovukwa, Ofumbungha/Yala, Isobo Otaka, Isobo Biko-Biko and Onyodama

3. Boki LGA - Wula Ekumpuo, Okwabang, Agba Osokom and Katchuan Irruan, 

4. Etung LGA - Nsofang, Ajassor and Abia

5. Abi LGA - Adadama, Usumutong, Imabana I and II, EkurekuII

6. Ikom LGA - Abanyom Ward, Nta - Nselle Ward, Ofutop Ward 2, Ikom Urban Ward 2.

These lights would enhance security and improve the micro economy of the communities, considering the importance of light to human and societal development. The solar street lights would, to a great extent, curb many nefarious acts during night hours, thereby contributing to the security measures in the area.

 

Road Construction:

In a bold demonstration of purposeful leadership and unwavering commitment to grassroots development, Senator Eteng Jonah Williams, has embarked on the construction of key rural access roads across his Senatorial district connecting hard-to-reach communities, boost local economies, and improve the standard of living for his constituents. Some of the latest road projects include:

1. Construction of 2km Mkpani Ring Road – Ongoing 

2. Construction of Lebang - Lokpoi Road – Ongoing 

3. Facilitated the construction of the Ebom–Ndibe Bridge(Second interstate bridge connecting Cross River State and Ebonyi State)

4. Grading of Agba 1 & Agba 2 Road in Boki LGA – Awarded

5. Grading of Iyamoyong – Okumuruktet – Iyamitet Road in Obubra LGA - Awarded

 

Empowerment Grants/Vocational Trainings

Through his comprehensive and people-centered empowerment initiative, in two years, Senator Eteng Williams have disbursed over ₦159 million in grants, training support, and startup tools—making a tangible difference in the lives of farmers, traders, students, and vulnerable groups across Cross River Central Senatorial District.

Empowerment Grants Breakdown:

• ₦55 Million in Economic Grants: 550 individuals, including students, market women, and small-scale farmers, received ₦100,000 each to boost local businesses and alleviate financial strain.

• ₦22 Million in Agro Grants: 180 constituents were supported with funds and starter packs to help them establish and grow agribusiness ventures, strengthening food production and rural livelihoods.

• ₦12 Million for Anti-Child Trafficking Training: 120 participants who attended sensitization workshops on child trafficking received training allowances, promoting awareness and advocacy against human trafficking in vulnerable communities.

• ₦2.4 Million for Poultry & Livestock Empowerment: 80 beneficiaries were equipped with 50-day-old chicks, feed, and essential farming tools—laying the foundation for sustainable income through livestock production.

• ₦50 Million in Presidential Grants: As part of federal economic relief efforts, Senator Williams facilitated disbursement to 1,200 individuals, each receiving ₦50,000 to support household stability amidst inflation and job losses.

• ₦18 Million for Vocational Training Support: 600 youths and women completed skills acquisition programs and were awarded startup grants, empowering them to launch small businesses in areas such as tailoring, ICT, catering, and more

 

Entrepreneurship Training and SME's Support: In a bid to support economic growth and empower local entrepreneurs, constituents and small business owners from all 66 wards of the Cross River Central Senatorial District were nominated to participate in the MEDA/BOI training program.

Foreign Scholarship:

As part of his commitment in empowering our youths with quality education and international exposure. Senator EtengWilliams has facilitated foreign scholarship for 12 beneficiaries from Central Senatorial District of Cross River State. The full scholarship, valued at over €40,000 each, covers tuition fees, accommodation, and living expenses for the entire duration of their studies.

Four scholars are pursuing Ph.D. degrees in the UK and Scotland, while eight are pursuing Master's degrees at prestigious universities in the UK, Germany, France, and Malaysia.

Local Scholarships:

The Law school grant for students across Cross River Central Senatorial District has empowered 60 law graduate in two years.

Beneficiaries received N200,000 – N250,000 each across Law School campuses in the country. 

In-country Scholarship for Post-Graduate Students

About 50 students pursuing post-graduate studies (Masters and Ph.D) in Nigerian Universities have been captured to receive full scholarship grants worth over N2 Million Naira each per session.

Agricultural Intervention:

In a bid to boost agricultural productivity and achieve food security, Senator Eteng Williams Distributed 1200 bags of NPK and Urea Fertilizers to support rural farmers across the 66 wards of the Cross River Central Senatorial District.

Medical Outreach\Intervention:

The first phase of Senator Eteng Williams FREE Medical Outreach recorded 10,000 beneficiaries in 6 days and 7 different locations.

In addition, 235 free surgeries were recorded, and deworming of 1028 children across the six Local Government Areas in Cross River Central Senatorial District. 

Similarly, Senator Eteng Williams paid unscheduled visits to some major medical facilities across Cross River Central Senatorial District, in the spirit of the Easter celebrations where he cleared medical bills of patients in critical conditions, newborns and patients who had been treated but awaiting discharge due to lack of funds. 

Plans have been concluded to sign up 1,200 constituents into the State Health Insurance Scheme.

Educational Interventions:

In the provision of educational infrastructure, Senator EtengWilliams has facilitated the

construction of a 3-classroom block in Aduma Primary School, Mkpani at 85% completion.

He has also donated instructional materials such as Notebooks, School bags, Calculators, Mathematical sets, Writing Items, and others to over 50 public schools in Cross River Central Senatorial District.

Sports Development:

As a lover of sports, Distinguished Senator Eteng Williams sponsored the Sweet Prince Otu Cup for pupils in over 40 secondary schools across the state to boast grassroots football and to support the Senator Otu-led administration in sports development. 

Senator Eteng Williams also sponsored the Yakurr Unity Cup in 2024 with all the 13 council wards participating.

Community Intervention:

This underscores Senator Eteng Williams strong grassroots connection and his relentless pursuit of progress and better living standards of the people of Cross River Central Senatorial District, some of the interventions include;

Abuja, Nigeria – June 13, 2025 – As the 10th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria marks its second anniversary, Senator Eteng Jonah Williams, representing Cross River Central Senatorial District, has unveiled an impressive mid-term performance report, showcasing his strides in legislative duties, infrastructure development, human capital empowerment, and constituency outreach.

In a comprehensive account released on the anniversary of the Senate's inauguration, Senator Williams, who also chairs the Senate Committee on Petroleum (Upstream), highlighted key achievements that underscore his reputation as a results-driven lawmaker.

LEGISLATIVE IMPACT: BILLS AND MOTIONS

Senator Williams has sponsored several bills, including the Federal Medical Centres Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024, aimed at establishing a Federal Medical Centre in Ugep to ease access to tertiary healthcare. Another major bill, the Chartered Institute of Petroleum and Gas Engineers of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill, 2024, currently awaiting its third reading, seeks to professionalize and regulate the petroleum and gas engineering sector.

Other bills at the first reading stage include the Nuclear Safety Security and Safeguard Bill, 2023 and an amendment to the Mineral and Mining Act.

On the floor of the Senate, Senator Williams has moved several motions of national importance, including those addressing communal violence, illegal oil exploitation, technical education revitalization, support for internally displaced persons (IDPs), and reforms to Nigeria's counterpart funding policy.

INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT: LIGHT, WATER & ROADS

Through his "Project Light Up Central" initiative, Senator Williams has installed hundreds of solar-powered streetlights in communities across the six local government areas of his senatorial district, enhancing security and local commerce.

He has also completed nine solar-powered boreholes in water-stressed communities including Ediba (Abi), Assiga (Yakurr), Ababene (Obubra), and Boje (Boki), improving access to clean water.

In terms of road infrastructure, several key projects are ongoing, such as the 2km Mkpani Ring Road and the Lebang–Lokpoi Road. Senator Williams also facilitated the construction of the critical Ebom–Ndibe Bridge, linking Cross River and Ebonyi States.

ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT AND YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

With over ₦159 million disbursed in grants, vocational training support, and start-up tools, the senator's empowerment programs have benefitted more than 2,500 constituents. These include economic grants, agro-support packages, anti-human trafficking workshops, poultry empowerment programs, and federal relief grants.

Youth and women across the 66 wards of Cross River Central have also been trained under the MEDA/Bank of Industry SME development program.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND EDUCATION SUPPORT

Twelve constituents are currently pursuing postgraduate studies abroad under fully funded scholarships facilitated by Senator Williams, covering tuition, accommodation, and living expenses.

In-country, 60 law school students have received financial aid, while 50 postgraduate students in Nigerian universities are also beneficiaries of full tuition scholarships.

The Senator has donated educational materials to over 50 public schools and is nearing completion of a 3-classroom block in Aduma Primary School, Mkpani.

HEALTHCARE AND MEDICAL INTERVENTIONS

Over 10,000 people benefited from a six-day free medical outreach program organized across all six LGAs. The outreach recorded 235 free surgeries and the deworming of 1,028 children. Plans are underway to enroll 1,200 constituents into the Cross River State Health Insurance Scheme.

Additionally, Senator Williams made surprise hospital visits during Easter, settling bills for patients in critical conditions.

JOB PLACEMENT AND FEDERAL APPOINTMENTS

In two years, Senator Williams has facilitated federal jobs and political appointments for dozens of constituents. Agencies involved include NUPRC, NNPCL, NASC, and FAAN, with beneficiaries deployed across the civil service, military, and paramilitary sectors.

SPORTS AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Demonstrating his support for grassroots sports, Senator Williams sponsored the Sweet Prince Otu Cup, involving over 40 secondary schools, and the Yakurr Unity Cup 2024, engaging all 13 council wards in Yakurr LGA.

Community interventions include the construction of six modern toilet facilities at the Ikom Police Division and a ₦10 million donation to Ekpache-Nkome community for development purposes.

Soludo to Host SMFEST 2025 as Keynote Speaker in Awka

AWKA — Anambra State Governor, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, is set to host and deliver the keynote address at SMFEST Awka 2025, a major digital and innovation event scheduled to hold this July in the state capital . This was disclosed during a press briefing at the Solution Innovation District (SID) Centre in Awka.

Addressing Journalists, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Innovation and Business Incubation and team lead of the Solution Innovation District, Ms Chinwe Okoli revealed that SID will serve as the headline sponsor of SMFEST 2025. According to her, the partnership was a strategic one that aligns with the core mission of SID and Governor Soludo broader vision for Anambra digital transformation. She stated that the SMFEST mission resonates deeply with the goals of SID which aims to build a digitally empowered tribe of young innovators, creators and problem solvers in Anambra State.

She further noted that SMFEST offers an opportunity to nurture talents, support youth driven innovation and build a community of digital professionals explaining that SID partnership demonstrates government commitment to fostering a thriving digital ecosystem in the region.

Also speaking at the briefing, the Lead Organiser of SMFEST, Mr. Ifeanyi Ochije who  announced SID as the headline sponsor expressed his excitement about the collaboration. He emphasized that SMFEST was born out of the need to galvanize young people in the South East with digital skills and innovative thinking. Ochije explained that the event, which started in 2021 in Owerri, has now grown into a regionally significant project and this year, Awka will host the only edition of SMFEST in the South East.

He described the 2025 edition of the event as a platform to awaken the innovative spirit of Anambra youths and expose them to new opportunities within the digital economy. He noted that this year theme, "Disrupt and Evolve," reflects the  goal of encouraging disruptive innovation among young people. According to him, the event will feature industry leaders including CEO of Pamtech Group Engr. Ndubisi Chidomere, CEO of Blord Group  Linus Williams, Head of Growth Sterling Bank Obinna Ukachukwu and CEO of Cafe One Kelechi Nwaozuzu,  among others.

In addition to the main conference, the event will include a free one-week digital and social media bootcamp from June 22 to June 29, 2025. This virtual training aims to equip 2,000 Anambra youths with relevant skills in graphic design using Canva, video editing with CapCut, social media advertising, content monetization, AI tools and remote work strategies targeted at empowering youths with practical knowledge that will help them generate income and contribute to solving local and global challenges.

While on July 4, 2025, a Founder Mixer will be held in the state to bring together ecosystem leaders and startup founders from across the South East to foster networking and collaboration. The main conference event is scheduled for July 5, 2025 and will take place at the Hollywood Event Center, Awka. Governor Soludo will host the event and deliver the keynote address, highlighting the importance of youth innovation and digital development in Anambra.

They also urged young people across the state to take advantage of the free training and networking opportunities to equip themselves with digital skills that align with the ongoing transformation being driven by the Soludo administration.

ADC Unveils Strategy to Reclaim Anambra at First Coalition Convergence

AKWA — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has held its first ever coalition convergence in Awka, Anambra State, bringing together a broad alliance of political parties, civil society groups and stakeholders determined to reshape Nigeria political trajectory.

Addressing the gathering, State Chairman of ADC, Comrade Patrick Obianyo, described the event as more than just a political meeting, but a "movement and declaration" of intent to reclaim Anambra and restore its place as the "light of the nation." He decried the rising insecurity, soaring unemployment and what he termed a slide into a de facto one-party system in Nigeria.

"This coalition is born out of the urgent need to rescue our federation," Obianyo said. "We must change the trajectory and rebuild our cities and states. Anambra must lead by example."

Speaking on behalf of the ADC governorship candidate Mr. John Chuma Nwosu, the deputy governorship candidate Sir Geoffrey Nwobu (Obuka Awka) stressed the urgency of the national crisis, citing widespread poverty, deep-rooted corruption and ongoing insecurity.

"Our brothers in Benue have been massacred, corruption is rampant, and leadership appears indecisive," Nwobu lamented. "ADC offers a platform for change , one built on perseverance, determination and diligence."

He announced that ADC would officially flag off its state campaign on June 11, 2025, with a promise to run a people-focused, issue-based campaign.

In his keynote presentation titled "Building and Maintaining a Sustainable Coalition for Successful Engagement"  delivered by Professor Chukwuemeka Jaja Nwanegbo, former Head of the Political Science Department at Nnamdi Azikiwe University. He emphasized the strategic importance of coalitions in Nigeria's political landscape.

"Winning elections and ensuring balanced governance in Nigeria requires meaningful coalitions anchored on shared principles not just numbers," Nwanegbo stated.

Leaders from other political parties and civil organizations also declared support for the coalition. Labour Party chieftain Nnamdi Aniagor praised ADC initiative, pledging to take the message of unity back to his party members. Representatives from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and various civil society groups echoed a shared commitment to "change the narrative" of governance in Nigeria.

The event concluded with a symbolic presentation of ADC branded polos and face caps to coalition partners, marking a united front in their quest to provide an alternative voice for the people of Anambra and beyond.

At a relatively young age, Senator Ekpenyong has demonstrated remarkable energy and dedication to public service. His background as a seasoned educationist cum administrator and his tenure as Commissioner for Finance in Cross River State, equipped him with the expertise and vision necessary to drive meaningful development. 

Today, sitting as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), he has been instrumental in shaping policies that benefit the region and the country at large.

One of Senator Asuquo's most notable achievements is his commitment to infrastructural development. Under his watch several roads have been constructed in the Calabar Metropolis and other local government areas within his Senatorial District. These projects have not only improved the quality of life for residents but also facilitated economic growth and development in the region.

Beyond infrastructure, Senator Asuquo has shown a deep understanding of the needs of the common man. His youth-friendly approach to governance has endeared him to the younger generation, who sees in him a leader who understands their aspirations and challenges. Oben-Etchi Salutes Governor Otu, Deputy for Two Years of Transformational Leadership

CALABAR — As the Cross River State Governor, His Excellency Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu, completes another 365 days in office, the Executive Chairman of the Cross River State Forestry Commission, Rt. Hon. George Oben-Etchi has sent heart felt congratulatory message describing Governor Otu and his Deputy, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, an outstanding performer. 

The message signed by Oben-Etchi on behalf of the management and staff of the Forestry Commission praised the administration for bringing what he called "renewed hope, positive and glaring results" across various sectors.

He noted that the administration has made purposeful strides in areas such as Education, Health, Infrastructure, Economic Rejuvenation, Human Capacity Building, Urban and Rural Development, as well as Civil Service reforms.

According to the message, "Your administration has been full of renewed hope, positive and glaring results, purposeful giant strides in all sectors… giving the great people of our dear State hope for a better Cross River State."

The Forestry boss further commended the resilience and achievements of the Governor and his Deputy, praying for God's continued protection and wisdom for them.

"As we mark this historic occasion, we commemorate your resilience and great achievements, as we pray for God's continued hand of protection upon your life and your family, unending wisdom, strength, good health, and more success in the years to come," he stated.

Otu Pushes for Customs Support to Revive Tinapa, Calabar Free Trade Zone

CALABAR — Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, has renewed calls for the revitalization of the long-abandoned Tinapa Business and Leisure Resort, urging the Nigeria Customs Service to play a pivotal role in restoring its viability as a major economic hub.

The Governor made this appeal during a strategic visit to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, at the Service's headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday. His mission was clear: to deepen institutional cooperation with Customs in a bid to unlock the vast commercial potential of Cross River State's dormant economic zones—most notably Tinapa and the Calabar Free Trade Zone (CFTZ).

"Tinapa holds untapped promise—not just for Cross River State, but for Nigeria's economy at large. With the right support from Customs and other federal agencies, it can become a thriving export gateway and commercial hub," Governor Otu emphasized.

He stressed that the revitalization of Tinapa and the CFTZ is central to his administration's economic blueprint, which also includes the development of the Bakassi Deep Sea Port and expansion of export infrastructure. The Governor appealed for enhanced Customs presence and streamlined operations to facilitate smoother trade processes and reawaken investor confidence in these zones.

Otu praised the Customs Service for its landmark ₦6.1 trillion revenue generation in 2024, noting that Cross River alone contributed an impressive ₦200 billion to the national purse through its command operations. He also lauded the professionalism of officers posted to the state, particularly those at the Mfum and Ikang border posts with Cameroon, and disclosed that the state recently donated operational vehicles to aid their anti-smuggling and surveillance efforts.

Beyond infrastructure and revenue, the Governor reflected the human cost of insecurity and underdevelopment, drawing attention to the over 50,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) currently hosted by the state. He urged the Customs Service to consider its critical role in stabilizing the region and promoting legal cross-border trade that benefits communities.

In response, Comptroller-General Adeniyi commended Governor Otu's forward-thinking leadership and affirmed the Service's readiness to collaborate. He noted that the Customs Service has rolled out several trade facilitation reforms—including the Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) program and the Advanced Ruling System—to simplify business operations and stimulate economic zones across the country.

"The revival of Tinapa aligns with our mandate to enhance trade facilitation. We're committed to partnering with Cross River State to make Tinapa and other strategic projects a success," Adeniyi assured.

He added that the Customs Service's reforms were aligned with President Tinubu's economic vision and assured the Governor of robust institutional backing for the Tinapa revival and the Bakassi Deep Sea Port.

The meeting ended on a positive note, with both parties pledging sustained engagement to transform Cross River's economic corridors into engines of national growth.

Okoi, Abini Thomas Emerges NACRISS WW President-Elect

CALABAR — In a peaceful and orderly election held at the U.J Esuene Stadium in Calabar, the National Association of Cross River State Students Worldwide (NACRISS-WW) has declared its new leadership. Okoi, Abini Thomas, a student of the Faculty of Social Science, Department of Conflict Resolution at the University of Calabar, emerged as the President-Elect with a total of 83 votes. Joseph Nyong was elected as the Vice President-Elect, while Effem Miracle was chosen as the Director of Social.

The election was closely monitored by key stakeholders, including Hon. Enyam Joseph-Kelvin, Special Adviser to the Governor on student Affairs, who described the electoral process as free and fair. In an interview, Hon. Enyam Joseph-Kelvin commended the students for their decorum and cooperation during the election, stating that every aspirant was given the opportunity to vote and be voted for. He noted that the votes were counted and declared in a transparent manner, reflecting the democratic principles that the students uphold.

Hon. Enyam Joseph-Kelvin also expressed his gratitude to the Governor of Cross River State, His Excellency Apostle Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu, for providing a conducive environment for the students to conduct their affairs. He praised the Governor's commitment to fostering a culture of peace and stability, which enabled the students to carry out their activities without any disruptions. The Special Adviser also thanked the Chief of Staff to the Governor and the Special Adviser on General Duties for their support.

The Electoral Board Chairman, Sen. Ntui Endurance Elepe, corroborated Hon. Enyam Joseph-Kelvin's assessment, describing the election as free and fair. He commended the students for their maturity and cooperation during the electoral process, which ensured that the election was conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner.

The emergence of Okoi, Abini Thomas as the President-Elect of NACRISS-WW is a significant development for the student community. As a student of Conflict Resolution, Okoi Abini Thomas is well-equipped to navigate the complexities of student politics and build consensus among his peers. Ms. Okoi Abini Thomas on her emergence as the newly elected President of the National Association of Cross River State Students Worldwide (NACRISS WW) is said to have defeated four (4) males counterparts to emerge the 2nd Female President of the Students Union body after Philomena Agweye, a 400 level of Vocation and Special education student of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) in 2014.

Notably, she previously contested for Vice President positions in both the 2023 SOSSA-UCC and NAPSS-UCC elections. 

Cross River State House of Assembly Saga: Hon. Cyril Omini's Many Unpardonable Sins

Yesterday, the Cross River State cyberspace was awash with information suggesting that the Honourable Member Representing Yakurr 1 State Constituency, Hon. Cyril Omini, has been unceremoniously "ousted" as Chairman, Finance and Appropriation Committee; while such development is not alien to the modus operandi of legislative business, it does appear that the removal of Hon. Cyril Omini as Committee Chairman, ruffled not a few feathers, especially amongst young people in the State.

Whereas, it is within the constitutional prerogative of the Speaker to reshuffle the membership and headship of committees in the house, whenever it is imperative to do so, the removal of Cyril Omini has continued to generate uproar and suspicion, especially given the fact that the reasons adduced for his removal, appear to have defile all logical reasoning. The Speaker was quoted to have removed the honourable member on grounds of gross misconduct and absenteeism–quite ambiguous a claim, if you ask me. What exactly is this misconduct that has made the speaker use a sledgehammer? What could be so unpardonable a sin that would warrant such a draconic measure? These and many more are the unanswered questions on the lips of many. 

Anyone can choose to believe anything, but one thing has remained undisputed about Hon. Cyril Omini: he is one of the very best and most consistent–in service delivery– Assembly members alive today; hence, not out of place to assume that Hon. Cyril Omini, by his stellar performance, must have invited the lizards to a feast by carrying an insect infested firewood. What other sin can be more unpardonable than seeing an "ordinary" House of Assembly member outperforming all his colleagues put together? What else can be more unpardonable than seeing a fellow Assembly member facilitate the building of roads in his Constituency, construction of Civic Centers, massive financial support and grants for Small and Medium Enterprises, Payment of School fees for Law School Students, Jamb Registrations, Donation of Cars and Motorcycles to Constituents, Provision of Boreholes, Payment of Medical bills and facilitating Medical Outreach for Constituents. What else can be so unpardonable than fulfilling your promise to your Constituents, in an assembly where other members seem to have forgotten the roads to their Village? 

While the aforementioned sins are "unpardonable" it is important to stress that the removal of Hon. Cyril Omini appears to have sent a bad signal, as Cross Riverians– especially young people–believe that he is being victimized for daring to be different. I honestly do hope that this has nothing to do with 2027 election or the botched impeachment saga that greeted the assembly last year. A case of the Honourable Speaker trying to take his own pound of flesh. More worrisome is the fact that while Hon. Cyril Omini appears to be in support of Senator Eteng Jones return to the Senate, the speaker is alleged to be more amenable to Oden Ewa's aspiration to be Senator. 

While Politics is a game of thrones and wits, I honestly think that this infighting and cold war, would rather do more harm than good to the government even as we go into the 2027 election. I call on His Excellency, the Governor, to please intervene and restore normalcy to the house, as we cannot afford to have our assembly members on dagger-drawn against one another. I think that assembly members like CY should be encouraged to do more, rather than being victimized. What else is the season of sweetness without assembly members like CY complimenting the good works of the Governor? Imagine if we can have someone like CY in each of the 18 LGAs, I am cocksure that the fragrance of this season of sweetness will spread faster to all the nooks and crannies of the state. We must therefore, as a state, stop the killing of our own prophets–apologies to Bob Marley.
