C’River Youths Back State Govt in Renewed Push to Reclaim Oil Wells, 13% Derivation

CALABAR Youth leaders in Cross River State have thrown their weight behind the state government in its renewed effort to reclaim its oil wells and the constitutionally guaranteed 13 percent derivation, describing the ongoing hearing at the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMFC), Abuja, as a defining moment in the state's economic history.

This position was made known by the Cross River State Chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) in a press release issued on Thursday, January 30, 2026, where the youth body expressed strong solidarity with the administration of Governor Bassey Edet Otu and called for fairness, transparency and justice in the RMFC process.

The statement signed by the State Public Relations Officer of NYCN, Comrade Melchizedek David, reads in full:
The Cross River State Chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) hereby expresses its strong solidarity and unwavering support for the Government of Cross River State in its ongoing efforts to reclaim the state's oil wells and the constitutionally guaranteed 13% Offshore Oil Production Derivation at the hearing currently taking place at the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMFC), Abuja.

This process represents a critical step in restoring the economic rights, fiscal stability, and developmental prospects of Cross River State. The loss of these oil assets and derivation benefits over the years has had significant implications for revenue generation, infrastructure development, youth empowerment, education, healthcare, and overall socio-economic growth of the state.

As the umbrella body of youths in Cross River State ably led by His Youthfulness Comr. Emmanuel Olayi, the NYCN firmly believes that the reclamation of these resources is not only lawful and justifiable but also essential for securing a better future for present and coming generations of Cross Riverians.

We commend our very cerebral and dogged Governor, His Excellency, Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu, and the entire state leadership for their courage, diligence, and strategic approach in pursuing this legitimate cause through constitutional and legal channels. Their commitment reflects genuine leadership and a deep concern for the welfare of the people.

The NYCN assures the State Government of the total support, cooperation, and mobilization of the youth constituency throughout this process. We remain committed to peaceful advocacy, civic engagement, and constructive participation in all efforts aimed at protecting the interests of our dear state.

We also call on the National Boundary Commission and the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission to conduct its deliberations with utmost transparency, fairness, and objectivity, guided by facts, equity, and constitutional provisions, in the overall interest of justice and national unity.

Furthermore, we urge all relevant stakeholders, including federal authorities, traditional institutions, civil society organizations, and well-meaning Nigerians, to support Cross River State in this noble and legitimate pursuit.

Onwe Calls for Investigation, Not Suspension, Over UCTH CMD Allegations

CALABAR – CHIEF, Dr. Henry Onwe,  the Chairman, Cross River State Business Men's Forum has called for caution over the Motion by the House of Representatives urging the Federal Government to suspend the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, UCTH, Chief  Medical Director, Dr Ikpeme A Ikpeme

In a press statement made available to newsmen in Calabar on Friday, High Chief Henry Onwe emphasised that the need for caution on the matter  became necessary following the failure of the House of Representatives to carry out any investigation before adopting the Motion moved  by the member representing Afikpo South/Afikpo North federal constituency of Ebonyi State, Mr Iduma Igariwey

He said recent public discussions surrounding internship placement at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) have raised serious concerns, particularly claims that the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Ikpeme A. Ikpeme, acted on ethnic considerations in dealing with some medical graduates. As a concerned citizen of Cross River State, and having followed the public discourse closely over the last fortnight, acting on  those  allegations without careful investigation would be counter productive.

"The impulsive  call by the House of Representatives on the Federal Government to suspend the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, UCTH,  Chief Medical Director, Dr Ikpeme A. Ikpeme based on  the adoption on Thursday, of a Motion of Urgent Public Importance moved by the member representing Afikpo South/Afikpo North Federal Constituency, Ebonyi State, Mr Iduma Igariwey is hasty, hash and unrealistic"

High Chief Onwe insisted that for a matter that involves a body of the status of the  national assembly, painstaking investigation ought to be carried out before reaching any decision or taking any action.

"To reach a decision that is without bias or error, there is compelling need for the House of Representatives to carry out thorough investigation where all the parties involved in the matter are given opportunity to fully express themselves and state their position the way it affects them before a decision is reached or an action is taken for the purpose of equity and, fairplay and justice"

From information available, there is no indication or evidence that the affected House Officers had any direct interaction with the CMD concerning their internship placement. The claim as implied in their complaint to Mr Oseni, that they had a meeting with him is being contested. So who exactly were they dealing with?"

There is also no evidence that he made any statement formal or informal, suggesting that anyone was rejected, whether on tribal grounds or otherwise. It is, therefore, unsettling that an  accusation of ethnic bias is being acted upon  in the Federal House of Representatives without clear proof or firsthand engagement. No matter what is in the public and media space, it must be understood that Dr Ikpeme is the only person authorized to speak on behalf of UCTH which the House of Representatives did not contact to speak on the issue"

Making reference to the Nigerian Constitution, Dr Onwe stated that  the foundation of this country is built on natural justice, equity and fairplay to all sections of the country whether a majority or minority tribe or ethnic group

" It is on this basis that Section 14, subsection 3 of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended) primarily emphasises the Federal Character Principle in all aspects of the country's activities. That section of the Constitution mandates that the composition of any organ of government and  its agencies MUST reflect Nigeria's diversity,. This is to  promote national unity, cohesion  and preventing the dominance of any state, ethnic, or sectional groups in public appointments and affairs"

Chief insisted in the statement that for any decision to be reached, the lawmakers ought to sought answers to the following questions: 

(a) who authorised the postings

(b) What criteria was used in effecting the postings 

(c)How come 99%of the persons posted to one federal institution are  from one section of the country 

(c) Are there no qualified persons from other sections of the country that ought to be posted alongside these ones from one section of the country?

(e) What is to be done to ensure equity and national spread in line with the principle of federal character in the postings".

He stated that answers to these questions which would ordinarily not have  taken much time to unravel could have appropriately guided the House of Representatives to take a far reaching decision  that would provide lasting solutions on the matter and also guide against   subsequent issues of that kind  emanating in the future.

Chief Onwe also found fault with the claim by the House of Representatives that the CMD's action is contributing to brain drain insisting that  there is no guarantee that after their housemanship, the said medical doctors would remain in Nigeria to undertake their medical practices He said  doctors who  are taking flight out of Nigeria daily also  did their housemanship in the country, yet they are leaving the country in droves therefore , heaping the blame for doctors shortage in the country's healthcare system   on  Dr Ikpeme amounts to    giving a dog a bad name just to hang it.

He said further that that the House of Representatives in its haste to take a decision relied solely on media reports and  did not find time to call the National Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, or Nigeria Medical Association ,NMA, in Calabar to ascertain the veracity of media reports before reaching a decision on the motion moved by Igarewey.

"The House of Representatives  copiously quoted media reports  during deliberations on the motion and came to a conclusion and went ahead to urge the federal government to suspend the  UCTH Chief Medical Director. The Reps members  are not even abreast of the fact that the doctors in question  have since commenced  their training over a week ago in the hospital but  still belatedly called for the suspension of the CMD".

Taking a swipe at Igarewey, Chief Onwe said the lawmaker seems to lose sight or is ignorant of the fact that over the years, the UCTH has consistently maintained fairness, brotherly disposition in the appointment of top medical doctors, nurses and  paramedics of Igbo origin to positions of authority in the UCTH.

Claims of ethnic discrimination contained in Igarewey's Motion is are unfounded and inconsistent with the known administrative record of the hospital under Dr Ikpeme and even under past CMD's as UCTH operates as a federal institution that reflects Nigeria's diversity. Staff appointments and training opportunities cut across ethnic and regional lines. A notable example is the recent appointment in November 2025, of an Igbo woman as Head of Nursing Services by this same CMD and  administration, a fact that challenges the narrative of tribal exclusion

"Most of those appointed serve next in rank to the CMD. This is principally derived from the friendly and accommodating disposition of the average Cross Riverian who sees other ethic tribes as brothers and sisters   even against the backdrop that people of the state have not been fairly treated in some places"

In conclusion, the respected High Chief called on members of the House of Representatives from Cross River State to rise up to their role and stop any injustice against Dr Ikpeme by ensuring that the House of Representatives returns to its Motion on the issue and do the right thing by carrying out thorough investigation of the saga surrounding the current posting of housemanship doctors to the UCTH before reaching a decision.

"Also, it is pertinent at this juncture  to call on the federal government to stay any action against the CMD based on the call by the House of Representatives Motion of  Thursday, January 26, on the issue. As citizens, we owe it to ourselves and to the country to seek truth, promote dialogue, and allow due process to prevail especially in matters capable of deepening divisions"

Rep. Akpanke vs. Boniface Adie: Separating Truth From Falsehood

The online space has been flooded with videos featuring Hon. Boniface Adie, Managing Director of Missouri Property Ltd., making allegations on Berekete Family Human Rights Radio. These claims suggest that Hon. Peter Akpanke, the Member representing Obudu/Bekwarra/Obanliku Federal Constituency, received N35 million in exchange for a contract award, only to renege on the agreement. While it is true that Hon. Adie, a real estate developer and  Hon. Akpanke engaged in a legitimate business transaction in 2024, the alternative facts suggest that many of the circulating claims are not only inaccurate but appear deliberately misleading.

Hon. Akpanke acknowledges that he had a legitimate business transaction with Hon. Adie that involved N35 million. The business was an investment to enable Hon. Adie to partner with a contractor engaged in a capital project that he had facilitated to his Constituency. This amount was not, and could not have been, payment for the award of any contract. It is a settled principle in Nigeria's governance framework that legislators at any level lack the authority to award contracts; that responsibility rests solely with the executive branch and designated procurement authorities.

The discussion was that upon completion of the project and disbursement of funds by the Federal Government, any profits would be shared between Hon. Adie and the contractor, a point Hon. Adie himself briefly referenced during his interview. Hon. Akpanke facilitated this legitimate partnership directly and in good faith, based on a longstanding, trust-based relationship with Hon. Adie. Both parties reasonably expected timely payment from the government following project execution. Unfortunately, these expectations have been met with challenges in the funding of capital projects under the 2024 and 2025 federal budgets. 

However, while these payment delays have affected contractors nationwide and are by no means unique to this project, Hon. Akpanke fully recognizes Hon. Adie's legitimate right, as a businessman, to be concerned about the impact on his investment. This explains why when it became clear that Hon. Adie was unwilling to await the eventual release of funds by the government, he took steps to resolve the matter amicably and avoid any prolonged dispute by committing to refund the amount from his personal resources, and has, despite considerable effort and constraint, repaid N34 million of the N35 million advanced, with the most recent installment transferred on January 23rd, 2026; a payment that, regrettably, was not acknowledged until approximately 2:30 PM on January 26, 2026.

It is regrettable, though perhaps not entirely unexpected, that Hon. Adie has chosen not to acknowledge Hon. Akpanke's genuine intent in facilitating the partnership or the personal effort he has made to make refunds, despite the federal government having yet to disburse payment to the contractor. Instead, a narrative has been presented that does not accurately reflect the facts of the matter. Nevertheless, Hon. Akpanke, who is currently out of the country on official duties, has already instructed his office to remit the outstanding N1 million without delay to ensure the full amount is settled promptly and in good faith.

It is understandable that, in this political season, some people who feel threatened by Hon. Akpanke's rising profile as one of the most effective and impactful first-term members of the 10th National Assembly may seek to discredit him through misrepresentation and distraction. Nevertheless, such efforts will not deter him as he remains fully committed to the transparent, diligent service and constituency-focused initiatives that have earned him the trust and goodwill of the people he represents.

This, to the esteemed public, especially the good people of Obudu/Bekwarra/Obanliku Federal Constituency, Hon. Akpanke respectfully urges you to disregard these politically motivated and factually inaccurate narratives circulating in the public domain, which appear driven by personal grievances rather than truth. He equally appeals to media practitioners and social media commentators to uphold the highest standards of professionalism by verifying facts from all relevant parties before amplifying claims that risk misleading or misinforming the public. Fairness, accuracy, and balance remain essential to healthy discourse and informed citizenship.

Digital Tracking, GPS Mapping Boost Credibility of Cash Transfer Payments in C'River

CALABAR – The use of digital tracking and GPS-based household mapping has significantly improved the credibility, transparency, and accountability of the National Cash Transfer Programme in Cross River State, key stakeholders have said.

This was disclosed during a beneficiary sensitisation and engagement forum organised by the State Cash Transfer Office, where officials explained that geocoding technology now enables accurate identification, verification, and monitoring of beneficiaries across communities in the state.

Speaking at the event, Chief Henry Egbedo, Chief Coordinator of NGOs in Cross River State, said the adoption of GPS "drop-on location" during household enumeration has eliminated doubts surrounding beneficiary selection.

"At the point of enumeration, the GPS location of each household is captured. This means that at any time, the system can locate beneficiaries without depending on community leaders or manual records," Egbedo explained.

He noted that the process begins with Community-Based Targeting (CBT), where community members themselves identify poor and vulnerable households, stressing that the selection is community-driven rather than politically influenced.

Egbedo further clarified that the compiled register is transmitted to the National Cash Transfer Office, where a Proxy Means Test (PMT) is applied to objectively select the poorest households based on household size and vulnerability indicators such as the presence of children under five.

> "Large households with higher dependency ratios are prioritised because they are more vulnerable. However, if people give false information during enumeration, they end up cheating themselves," he added.

Also speaking, Prof. Esther Patrick Achiba, Focal Person for the programme, explained that digital monitoring and evaluation mechanisms are used to track fund utilisation and assess impact.

> "We have followed up on beneficiaries and observed that many have combined their transfers to form cooperatives and start small businesses. This shows the programme is achieving its poverty-alleviation ," Achiba said.

Representing the Cross River State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, the Permanent Secretary,Mr. Andy Akutsu-Adeshi, commended the National Cash Transfer Programme for aligning with the Federal Government's Renewed Hope Agenda.

> "This initiative speaks directly to poverty reduction. The shift from analog processes to digital systems gives confidence that the programme will be sustained and expanded," Akutsu-Adeshi stated.

On the payment process, Mr. Tony Okori, who represented Fortis Payment Services, assured beneficiaries of transparency and readiness in fund disbursement.

> "We are fully on ground to carry out the payments, and the process is completely transparent," Okori said.

One of the beneficiaries, Rev. Hogan Eperon, described his selection as fair and merit-based.

> "I was not selected because I know someone. I was selected by a system that works. This support will help me start a small business and improve my family's livelihood," he said.

Stakeholders at the forum urged beneficiaries to use the funds responsibly, warning against data manipulation and misuse, as effective utilisation would encourage the Federal Government and development partners, including the **World Bank**, to expand the programme.

With digital tracking, GPS mapping, and strict separation of duties between beneficiary identification and payment agencies, the Cross River Cash Transfer Programme is increasingly being viewed as a model for transparent and accountable social protection delivery in Nigeria.

Gov.Otu's Christmas 'Hampers' Spark Row In Bekwarra

...Ada Bekwarra II fingered in alleged nepotism, sabotage.

ABOUCHICHE – Bekwarra local government area is in the news again over controversies surrounding the sharing of Christmas 'hampers' donated to critical stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress, APC in the area by the State Governor,Sen. Prince Bassey Otu during the last Yuletide.

The development is coming weeks after the ouster of Hon.Theresa Ushie as Chairman of the Council area following alleged abuse of office and gross impunity leveled against her by the council legislature.

A socio-political support group of the APC in the area,The Bekwarra Rebirth, has alleged impunity and sabotage against the Ada Bekwarra II, Hon.Chief Signor Omang Idiege, whom they said was directly involved in the selection and submission of names of the potential beneficiaries of the Governor's Christmas goodwill.

In its statement made available to newsmen in Calabar,The Bekwarra Rebirth alleged that by the act,Chief Idiege deviated from the original mandate of equitable distribution of the package to thirty critical stakeholders of the APC with three from each of the ten wards of the area as selected and instead preferred nepotistic approach.

They argued that preferential treatment was given to Gakem Ward where the Ada Bekwarra hails from with nine persons benefitting, leaving other wards to share twenty one, while Abouchiche, the council headquarters had none.

Endorsed by Odey Paulinus and Ogar Eneji, President and Secretary of the group respectively, the statement said the "other nine wards were left with staggered names."

The development, according to them, reflected "the usual nature of impunity" characteristic of the leader," adding that "other leaders of note who were duly selected for the 'hampers' and had submitted their account details were deliberately denied for obvious political reasons."

The statement queried, "how can a ward have nine beneficiaries whereas Abouchiche, where situate the council headquarters has none; Ibiaragidi has one, and so forth?" This kind of impunity has lingered longer than necessary in Bekwarra, and needs to be addressed immediately!"

The group appealed to Governor Otu to order a full investigation into the matter and ensure that justice is done to avoid unpleasant experiences in the future.

The statement also urged Chief Idiege to come clean on the allegations or better still,prove otherwise that the list was manipulated without his knowledge and consent.

The group reasoned that "it is crystal clear and an undeniable fact that the perpetrator of the alleged favouritism, impunity and gross sabotage of the Governor's goodwill is from the Gakem side of the local government area, and if nothing else,for giving out nine out of the twenty six hampers to his Gakem brothers and sisters and sharing the remaining seventeen among nine wards in a staggered manner which also left out the council headquarters, Abouchiche."

The Bekwarra Rebirth wants the State Governor to intervene over the alleged favouritism and impunity.

Responding to the allegations, the Ada Bekwarra II, Hon. Chief Signor Omang Idiege, dismissed the allegations as baseless, distancing himself from the group behind the claims.

He stated that he does not recognize the group, describing it as neither a known support group nor a registered pressure group within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bekwarra.

According to him, responsible party members or genuine support groups are expected to channel their grievances through established party organs at the ward, local government, or state levels, rather than resorting to social media to air complaints or cast aspersions on party leaders.

"I do not know them, and I am not aware of such a group," he said, adding that the use of social media to insult leaders under the guise of activism is irresponsible and contrary to party norms.

 He urged party members to adhere to internal dispute-resolution mechanisms and uphold discipline and respect within the APC.

Group Alleges Plot to Unseat Acting APC Chairman, Warns of Internal Crisis

IKOM – A socio-political pressure group, Ikom Grassroot Progressives, has raised alarm over what it described as a calculated plot by vested interests within the All Progressives Congress (APC) to unseat the Acting State Chairman of the party in Cross River State, Comrade Ekum Ekok Ojogu.

In a strongly worded statement issued on Sunday, the group alleged that the move was not motivated by incompetence or failure on the part of the Acting Chairman, but by his refusal to support what it called the "illegal and reckless" removal of some elected party officers in the state.

According to the group, the alleged plot represents a dangerous departure from due process, party constitution, and internal democracy, warning that continued internal infighting could weaken the APC's structure and electoral readiness in Cross River State.

"The Acting Chairman's only offence is his insistence on doing the right thing and refusing to be used as a tool for injustice," the statement said. "Rather than respect party rules, some individuals have allegedly resorted to conspiracy, blackmail, and sabotage."

The group further expressed concern over reports that political actors from Ikom were allegedly collaborating with elements from Obudu to destabilize the party's leadership, describing such moves as divisive and short-sighted. It warned that exploiting regional sentiments for political advantage could deepen internal cracks and threaten party unity.

Ikom Grassroot Progressives noted that Comrade Ojogu is a long-standing member of the APC who has served the party in various capacities and maintained loyalty during challenging periods. The group described him as a stabilizing figure who has worked quietly to strengthen the party and maintain harmony among stakeholders.

The statement also cautioned that removing the Acting Chairman under controversial circumstances could set a dangerous precedent, where party leaders become vulnerable to coordinated pressure from aggrieved interests.

"If this plot succeeds, it will signal the collapse of discipline, loyalty, and due process within the party," the group warned, adding that a party consumed by internal battles would struggle to present a united front against opposition parties.

The group called on party elders, leaders, and stakeholders across the state to intervene and halt any actions capable of destabilizing the APC, stressing that unity and restraint are critical at this stage.

"APC in Cross River State must be bigger than personal ambition," the statement concluded, urging members to protect the party's structures and leadership in the interest of long-term stability and electoral success.

Akiba Boosts Agricultural Productivity with Over 100 Hectares of Palm Plantation in Cross River

ODUKPANI – In a strategic push to strengthen agricultural productivity and improve rural livelihoods, the Member representing Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency,  Hon. Bassey Akiba, has supported the establishment of over 100 hectares of oil palm plantations across communities in Cross River State through a cooperative-driven livelihood support programme.

The intervention, which cuts across oil palm, cassava, fisheries, and poultry value chains, involves the distribution of high-yield palm seedlings and agricultural inputs to registered cooperative farmers, with a clear target of ensuring that each beneficiary cultivates at least one hectare of oil palm plantation.

Speaking during the distribution exercise, Akiba disclosed that cooperative farmers received four 50kg bags of LBK 1515 fertilizer and 200 improved oil palm seedlings per cooperative, explaining that the seedlings were deliberately supplied above the required threshold to allow for replacement in case of losses.

> "Our target is that at least a cooperative farmer should have a hectare of oil palm plantation. For a hectare, what we know is that you need about 150 seedlings, but we are giving 200, just in case anything happens, so they can replace during the course of the farming season," he said.

According to the lawmaker, the programme is not a one-off distribution exercise but part of a broader livelihood support framework designed to ensure sustainability.

 "We are not just giving them what we are giving today. We will continue to work with them to ensure that the farm stands, because our idea is that when we leave, this should continue," Akiba stated.

He further revealed that the intervention would extend to cassava cooperative farmers in Adiawo, while **fisheries and poultry cooperatives would receive similar support at the council headquarters in the coming days.

One of the beneficiaries, an oil palm farmer, described the support as timely and impactful.

> "This is a great improvement to my farm. I will add it to what I have planted before, and it will increase my hectares. I am very grateful for this gesture," the farmer said.

Also speaking at the event, Barr. Ekpenyong Akiba, Special Adviser to Governor Bassey Edet Otu on General Duties, described the initiative as a strategic investment that aligns with the state government's People First agenda.

> "This is not just empowerment; it is investment. Whatever you affix to the soil will bring prosperity. This intervention will enhance productivity, improve food production, and ultimately strengthen livelihoods across the constituency," Barr. Akiba said.

He noted that the programme complements the agricultural vision of the Cross River State Government at all levels.

> "His Excellency, Governor Bassey Otu, is deeply committed to agriculture as a pathway to economic growth. What the Honourable Member is doing here is perfectly aligned with that vision, and it complements efforts at the state and local government levels," he added.

Barr. Akiba further urged beneficiaries to make effective use of the support, stressing that sustainable empowerment requires commitment from both government and the people.

 "Empowerment must be multifaceted and sustained. The people must take this seriously so that the benefits translate into long-term prosperity and food security," he said.

Ugep Polytechnic Rectorship: C'River Must Not Be Silenced Again

 "For a newly established federal institution, appointing a qualified indigene as Rector is not an act of exclusion but a strategy for stability, inclusion, and sustainable growth—especially when merit has been transparently established."

CALABAR – The ongoing process to appoint a substantive Rector for the newly established Federal Polytechnic, Ugep is more than an administrative exercise; it is a defining test of Nigeria's commitment to merit, equity, federal character, and institutional integrity. It is also a moment that calls for vigilance among all stakeholders in Cross River State.

There are now strong allegations that a process which was thoroughly and properly conducted in line with all extant guidelines and statutory requirements, producing a Cross Riverian who satisfied every provision and emerged as the recommended Rector, may be unlawfully circumvented. Reports indicate that despite the candidate's recommendation by the Governing Council and subsequent approval by Governor Bassey Edet Otu, an official at the Federal Ministry of Education is allegedly attempting to alter the outcome, raising grave concerns that such interference is driven by the mistaken and unacceptable notion that Cross Riverians are unfit to head federal institutions. If true, this would represent not only a breach of due process but also a troubling affront to equity and national unity

Meanwhile, across Nigeria, federal polytechnics are commonly led by qualified indigenes of their host states, a practice that has strengthened institutional stability and fostered community ownership. Institutions such as Auchi Polytechnic (Edo State), Federal Polytechnic Ilaro (Ogun State), Offa (Kwara State), Oko (Anambra State), Ekowe (Bayelsa State), Bida (Niger State), Nekede (Imo State), Kaduna Polytechnic (Kaduna State), and Yaba College of Technology (Lagos State)Federal Polytechnic idah in( kogi state) are all headed by rectors who are indigenes of, or firmly rooted in, their host states. These institutions have thrived, demonstrating that local representation and academic excellence are not mutually exclusive.

Ironically, Cross River State remains conspicuously absent at the national level of polytechnic leadership. At present, there is no Cross Riverian serving as a Rector of any federal polytechnic in Nigeria, not even in institutions domiciled within the state itself. This absence means that when critical decisions are taken at the Committee of Rectors of Polytechnics in Nigeria, Cross River State has no voice, no representation, and no institutional advocate at that strategic table.

For a new institution like Federal Polytechnic, Ugep, this reality makes the case for a qualified indigene Rector even more compelling. At its formative stage, the polytechnic requires leadership that understands the local environment, commands community trust, and can build strong partnerships essential for growth, security, and sustainability. An indigene Rector who has met all statutory requirements is uniquely positioned to provide such leadership.

It must be emphasized that advocating for an indigene Rector is not a call to lower standards. The Federal Polytechnic Act (as amended) and the guidelines of the Federal Ministry of Education clearly outline the qualifications for the office of Rector. Where a candidate emerges through a transparent, competitive, and merit-based process, and is duly recommended by the Governing Council, such a recommendation deserves respect and protection.

In this context, any attempt to alter or circumvent a concluded recommendation of the Governing Council, particularly by substituting a qualified indigene with a non-indigene, raises serious concerns. Such an action would not only undermine due process but would also amount to a direct affront to the efforts of the Cross River State Governor, who monitored and supported a free, fair, and credible selection process and gave approval based on merit. Allowing external interference to upturn that outcome would send a damaging signal about institutional autonomy and respect for state-level consensus.

This situation should serve as a wake-up call to all stakeholders in Cross River State, across party lines, the Governor, federal lawmakers, political leaders, business figures, senior party members, and all lovers of the state. Protecting the integrity of this process is not about partisan politics; it is about defending fairness, inclusion, and the collective dignity of the state within the Nigerian federation.

Beyond equity, the appointment of a qualified indigene Rector would also help address long-standing perceptions of marginalisation, particularly in the Obubra/Ugep axis. It would inspire confidence among young people, reinforce the principle that excellence is rewarded, and affirm that Cross River State will no longer be silent or invisible in key national education platforms.

In conclusion, appointing a qualified indigene as Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Ugep aligns with national best practices, strengthens institutional stability, restores Cross River State's voice in national polytechnic governance, and upholds the principles of merit and justice. Anything short of this would not only weaken the institution at birth but also erode public confidence in the fairness of federal appointments.

This is not merely about who occupies an office; it is about laying the right foundation for an institution and affirming the rightful place of Cross River State in Nigeria's educational leadership.

Wike’s Camp Suffers Setback as Court Dismisses Samuel Anyanwu’s Suit Against PDP

ABUJA— The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has dismissed the suit filed by Senator Samuel Anyanwu challenging his removal as the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), dealing a major setback to the camp of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, widely believed to have backed the embattled party chieftain.

Justice M. G. Umar, in a ruling delivered on Tuesday, struck out Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/254/2025 , Sen. Samuel Anyanwu v. INEC & Ors, in which the former PDP National Secretary sought judicial intervention to retain his position and restrain the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising or acting on any PDP correspondence not bearing his signature.

Anyanwu had approached the court following internal party disputes and earlier judicial pronouncements, arguing that his tenure as National Secretary subsisted until December 2025. He also relied on a previous Supreme Court decision which held that the leadership of political parties is largely an internal affair.

However, Justice Umar dismissed the suit on multiple grounds. The court reaffirmed the long-standing position of Nigerian courts that issues bordering on the internal administration and leadership of political parties are non-justiciable and fall outside the jurisdiction of the court.

The judge further held that the suit amounted to an abuse of court process, noting that several cases on the same subject matter were already pending or had been determined at different levels of the judiciary, including the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.

In addition, the court ruled that Anyanwu's tenure had expired by effluxion of time, having been elected as PDP National Secretary in 2021. The court held that he could not lawfully continue to lay claim to the office beyond the tenure for which he was elected.

The ruling effectively nullifies Anyanwu's attempt to use the courts to sustain his hold on the PDP national secretariat and is seen as a significant blow to the political influence of the Wike-aligned faction within the party.

Although Anyanwu has persistently maintained that his term remained valid, he was among the high-ranking PDP members expelled from the party during the Ibadan National Convention held in November 2025.

The PDP currently recognises the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC), which emerged from the Ibadan convention and has since been accepted by the party as its legitimate national leadership.

Political observers say the judgment further strengthens the authority of the PDP's current leadership while narrowing the legal and political options available to dissenting factions within the party.

UJIBHADA: Ebokpo Begins Early Grassroots Mobilization for Otu in C'River

CALABAR — In a move aimed at consolidating support for the re-election of Governor Bassey Edet Otu in 2027, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Irrigation Development, Johnson Andiambey Ebokpo, KSM, has unveiled the UJIBHADA Progressives Movement, a socio-political support platform designed to mobilise grassroots backing for continuity of the current administration in Cross River State.

The unveiling ceremony, which drew political stakeholders, party faithful and community leaders from across the state, also featured the inauguration of ward, chapter and local government coordinators to drive the activities of the movement at the grassroots level. The structure, according to organisers, is intended to ensure early mobilisation and sustained engagement ahead of the next general elections.

Speaking at the event, Ebokpo, who serves as the Director-General of the movement, said UJIBHADA was formed to galvanise widespread support for Governor Otu's second-term bid, stressing that continuity would guarantee the consolidation of the administration's people-oriented policies and developmental programmes.

Represented by the Deputy Director-General of the movement, Solomon Ekam, Ebokpo explained that "UJIBHADA," a term symbolising prosperity and good fortune, reflects the positive socio-economic direction of the Otu-led government and the need to sustain its reform agenda beyond 2027.

Providing an overview of the organisation, the Director of Special Duties, Dr. Cletus Omono, JP, disclosed that the UJIBHADA Progressives Movement is a duly registered political support group with coordinators across the 18 local government areas of Cross River State, ensuring a broad and inclusive reach.

In his keynote address, former council chairman of Obubra LGA, Dr. Bassey Eric Tom, urged members of the movement to remain united, disciplined and strategic in their engagements, noting that effective grassroots mobilisation would be critical to achieving success in 2027.

Also speaking, elder statesman and seasoned politician, High Chief Julius Mbina, highlighted the electoral strength of Obubra Local Government Area, calling on stakeholders to harness the voting capacity of the area to attract increased development and political relevance.

Goodwill messages were delivered by several stakeholders, including Mrs. Charity Orokwu, as the event attracted a wide spectrum of politicians, traditional leaders and party supporters who pledged their commitment to the ideals of the movement.

The high point of the event was the presentation of an Award of Excellent Performance to Ebokpo by the Director-General of AJEMO (Johnson Andiambey Ebokpo Movement), Mr. Ekawo Cyprian Awah. Presenting the award, Awah said the recognition was in appreciation of the commissioner's notable achievements within a short period in office and his contributions to community and state development.

Observers say the emergence of the UJIBHADA Progressives Movement signals the commencement of early grassroots political realignment ahead of the 2027 governorship election, with continuity of the Otu administration now gaining organised support across the state.
