IKOM — Calabar South Local Government Area on Friday demonstrated strong political solidarity as it joined stakeholders across Cross River State at the Prince Is Coming Movement endorsement rally held at Ikom Stadium, throwing its weight behind Governor Bassey Edet Otu ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Calabar South delegation, led by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Ironbar, and the Executive Chairman of the council, Hon. Patrick Archibong, arrived the venue alongside the Vice Chairman, Lady Atim Martins, members of the State House of Assembly representing the area, Hon. Effiong Ekarika and Hon. Speaking at the event, Dr. Ironbar commended the Prince Is Coming Movement for promoting unity and continuity, noting that the administration of Governor Otu has recorded significant strides in infrastructure, governance, and economic revitalization. He stated that the governor’s performance has strengthened public confidence and justified calls for continuity beyond the current term.

Also speaking, Chairman of Calabar South Hon. CALABAR – The Cross River Representative at the Niger Delta Development Commission's board, Rt. Honm Orok Duke, has mourned the death of late Associate Professor Edisua Ita, describing her as a symbol of selflessness, courage, and humanitarian service whose impact will endure across generations.

In a tribute at her funeral service, held recently in Calabar, Duke said the late academic lived a life dedicated to uplifting others, noting that she consistently deployed her knowledge and influence to address societal challenges. He emphasized that Edisua Ita was not only a scholar but a committed advocate for humanity who used theatre as a tool for social transformation and healing.

Duke, who was her classmate at the University of Calabar, recalled her passion for mentoring young people and supporting vulnerable groups, describing her as a “voice for the voiceless” whose home and work reflected deep compassion for the downtrodden.

He further commended her courage in standing for values that promoted development and inclusion, adding that her contributions to Theatre for Development and children’s theatre through her Dreamboat Development Theatre Foundation positioned her as a pacesetter in using the arts for societal impact.

While condoling her family, colleagues, and the academic community, Duke urged them to take solace in her enduring legacy of service, noting that her life remains a reference point for purposeful living.

Born on December 30, 1964, in Calabar, Edisua Ita hailed from a distinguished lineage, being the daughter of Etubom Asuquo Okon Ita and Elder Princess Mabey Essien Ita. Her early years were shaped by international exposure, having grown up in Santa Isabel, Equatorial Guinea, where her father served as a diplomatic attaché.

Until her passing, she was an Associate Professor and immediate past Head of the Department of Theatre and Media Studies at the University of Calabar. Her career spanned journalism, research, and academia, with significant contributions to children’s theatre and community development through her Dreamboat Development Theatre Foundation.

Late Associate Professor Edisua Ita is remembered for her contributions to academia, humanitarian service, and social development, with tributes highlighting her legacy as one defined by selflessness, courage, and lasting impact on society.

2027 House of Rep Bid: Bisong Introduces Unusual One-Term Covenant

CALABAR – The Chief Whip of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Hilary Ekpang Bisong, has formally declared his intention to contest for the House of Representatives seat for Ikom/Boki Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections, unveiling an unconventional “one-term covenant” that is already drawing attention across the state’s political landscape.

In a formal declaration done recently, the three-term lawmaker said his decision to seek election to the Green Chamber is driven by a commitment to deliver focused and result-oriented representation, rather than pursue a prolonged political career.

Central to his campaign is a pledge to serve only one term of four years if elected, a move he described as a deliberate strategy to ensure undivided attention to governance and accelerated constituency development.

“Four years. No re-election strategy. No compromise to protect a political future. Just total, undivided, fearless service from the first day to the last,” Bisong stated in his intent message.

He explained that the one-term covenant reflects the values of equity and leadership rotation within the constituency, while also addressing concerns about political office being treated as a career rather than a platform for service.

Bisong, who has represented Boki II State Constituency since 2015 and previously served as Deputy Leader before his current role as Chief Whip, said his aspiration is the product of extensive consultations and engagement with constituents across the wards of Ikom and Boki.

According to him, the move to seek a federal legislative seat is informed by a desire to expand the scope of his impact, particularly in facilitating access to federal resources and addressing long-standing infrastructural deficits in the constituency.

He cited the deplorable condition of the Ikom-Obudu highway as a major concern, recalling a recent incident in which a pregnant woman and her unborn child reportedly died due to the poor state of the road. Describing the situation as unacceptable, Bisong pledged to prioritize legislative action and high-level advocacy to secure federal intervention.

Beyond infrastructure, the APC chieftain outlined a comprehensive development agenda that includes job creation through active lobbying for federal employment opportunities, establishment of a Constituency Business Grant Programme, and organisation of an investment summit to attract funding for agro-processing and small-scale enterprises.

He also proposed expanding access to primary healthcare, advocating for inclusive health insurance for vulnerable groups, and introducing mobile medical outreach services to underserved communities.

Addressing social challenges, Bisong highlighted youth unemployment, migration, and substance abuse as pressing issues, proposing the establishment of a drug rehabilitation centre and structured mentorship programmes to redirect young people toward productive ventures.

On economic development, he emphasized the strategic importance of the constituency’s border location, pledging to promote regulated cross-border trade with Cameroon as a means of boosting local commerce and transforming the area into an economic corridor.

The lawmaker further promised a transparent approach to governance, including public documentation of constituency allocations, projects, and legislative decisions, as well as a clear succession framework to ensure continuity and inclusiveness in leadership.

While reaffirming his loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bisong called for a fair, transparent, and democratic primary process, expressing confidence that party members and constituents would support his candidacy.

“I am not asking for time to prove myself. I have demonstrated capacity over twelve years of consistent legislative service. I am asking for one term to move mountains,” he said.

Bisong’s declaration sets the stage for what is expected to be a competitive race for the Ikom/Boki federal seat, with his one-term covenant introducing a distinct narrative into the unfolding 2027 electoral contest.

ABUJA – The Chairman, National Youth Council of Nigeria Cross River State Council, Comr. Emmanuel Olayi has called for the institutionalisation of youth leadership development frameworks in the state, following his participation at the Abuja Dialogue 2026 held in Abuja.

Speaking with journalists after the high-level engagement, the Chairman said the Dialogue provided a timely platform to interrogate the future of youth leadership in Nigeria, stressing that Cross River State must align with emerging national frameworks that prioritise structured leadership grooming.

According to him, the keynote address delivered by Vice-President Kashim Shettima reinforced the urgent need to move beyond rhetoric and begin to build sustainable systems that prepare young people for governance and nation-building.

> “What stood out for me is the clear message that youth leadership cannot be accidental. It must be deliberate, structured and supported by strong institutions. This is a challenge to us in Cross River State to begin to rethink how we engage and prepare our young people,” he said.

Reflecting on lessons from the Dialogue, Olayi emphasised that youth development in Cross River must transition from ad hoc empowerment programmes to policy-driven frameworks.

He noted that while the state has a vibrant and energetic youth population, there is a pressing need to Establish leadership incubation platforms for young people, Create pathways for youth inclusion in governance and decision-making, Strengthen partnerships between government, civil society, and the private sector and Ensure budgetary commitment to youth-focused programmes

“We must begin to see youth leadership as a system, not an event. It is not enough to organise programmes; we must build institutions that consistently produce leaders,” he added.

The Chairman commended the Lagos State Government’s investment in youth leadership through initiatives such as the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy while appreciated efforts of Cross River State Government through Sen. Bassey Edet Otu, especially the deliberate training and Empowerment of over 400 Youths and other trainings and program carried out by the ministry of youth development in the state in the past three years, he however, asked the state to emulate the Lagos state Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy, describing it as a practical model that Cross River State can understudy.

He explained that such platforms provide young people with hands-on experience in public service, policy design, and governance, thereby bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world leadership demands.

“Cross River State can adapt similar models by creating structured fellowship programmes that expose our youths to governance processes while holding them accountable for measurable outcomes,” he noted.

While calling on government to create enabling structures, the Youth Council Chairman also challenged young people in the state to prepare themselves for leadership responsibilities.

Stressing that leadership requires, Discipline and continuous learning, Commitment to public service, Willingness to be accountable.

 “The opportunity is there, but readiness is key. As young people, we must equip ourselves with the skills, knowledge and values needed to lead effectively when the opportunity comes,” he said.

The Chairman disclosed plans to engage relevant stakeholders upon his return to Cross River State, with the aim of translating insights from the Dialogue into actionable programmes.

He added that the Youth Council would initiate conversations with the state government and development partners to explore the establishment of a **structured youth leadership development framework** tailored to the needs of Cross River youths.

The Abuja Dialogue 2026, convened by the Office of the Vice-President in collaboration with the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy, brought together policymakers, development experts, and youth leaders from across the country to discuss strategies for building a sustainable leadership pipeline for Nigeria.

CALABAR — The Cross River State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has elected a new State Executive Committee (SEC) in a move aimed at repositioning the party for greater relevance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The state congress, held on April 11, 2026, in Calabar, was supervised by a Congress Committee led by Prof. Sambo Williams as Chairman, with Chief Muganami serving as Secretary, alongside Comrades Anthony Bissong Attah and Dr. Inyang Unoh as members.

At the end of the exercise, Godwin Assam Effa emerged as State Chairman, alongside a full complement of executive members including Asuquo Ekpo (State Secretary), John Jallo Egbeji (Deputy Chairman), Paul Effiom Edet (Publicity Secretary), Eja Martins Titia (Financial Secretary), Etim O. Umoren (Treasurer), Andrew Okwoche (Organising Secretary), David Ekpo (Legal Adviser), Christabel Kosang (Woman Leader), Michael Anese (Youth Leader), and Charles Samuel (PWD Leader).

Others elected into the expanded leadership structure include John Akoramit (Vice Chairman, South), Fijian Uninke Akpake (Vice Chairman, North), Cosmos Efeghe (Vice Chairman, Central), as well as 51 additional members.

In his acceptance speech, Effa described his emergence as the dawn of a “new beginning” for the party in the state, pledging to reposition the ADC as a credible platform anchored on inclusivity, transparency, and people-oriented leadership.

“This moment is not just about me; it is about rebuilding broken values and restoring hope in our political system,” he said. “We are committed to transforming the ADC into a platform for possibility—one that embraces all demographics and gives voice to the aspirations of our people.”

Effa placed strong emphasis on youth inclusion, declaring that the future of the party would be driven by the energy and innovation of young people, while still drawing from the experience of older stakeholders.

Outlining his administration’s priorities, the new chairman highlighted plans to promote inclusive leadership, restore integrity and public confidence in the party, and position Cross River State as a hub of progress and opportunity.

He also commended party stalwarts, including former Governor Liyel Imoke and National Vice Chairman (South) Usani Usani, for their contributions to the party’s growth, calling for unity among members across all levels.

Olayi Appeals to Otu on Equity, Fairness in Northern Senatorial Elections

CALABAR – The Chairman, Cross River State chapter of National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) Comrade Emmanuel Olayi, has called on Governor Bassey Edet Otu to ensure that principles of equity and fairness guide decisions surrounding the forthcoming Northern Senatorial elections.

The appeal was made during an engagement between youth leaders and the Governor recently in Calabar, where he emphasized the importance of maintaining longstanding rotational arrangements and inclusive political practices across the state.

“As a young person, there is one word I like so much, which is equity,” Olayi stated. “When we had our own contest, we agreed, just like our elders did, that leadership should be rotational. That understanding brought unity and made the process peaceful.”

He stressed that such principles should be upheld at higher levels of governance, especially in politically sensitive periods.

Speaking about the Senatorial elections in the North Olayi said;

“We are getting into a very serious season in the life of the country and the state, Your Excellency, I appeal that the decisions taken at this time should reflect fairness and help keep us at peace, especially in the Northern Senatorial District.”

Lending his voice with the demands of the OBO Movement, Olayi pleaded with the governor to allow equity and inclusiveness guide party decisions in zoning the party's ticket for the Northern Senatorial District.

Olayi commended Governor Otu for his administration’s youth-focused interventions, noting that hundreds of young people have benefited from empowerment programmes.

“Only last year, over 400 persons were empowered, and shortly after, another 400 youths were trained in ICT and given gadgets free of charge,” he said. “Even now, there are ongoing plans to mobilize more young people for empowerment. All these are happening under your watch.”

Describing the Governor’s leadership style, Olayi added: “We have a government that listens, a government that is God-fearing, and one that has shown wisdom in leadership. We are confident that same wisdom will guide the right decisions at this time.”

He further assured the Governor of the unwavering support of youths across the state.

“All the youths you see here and across the state have 100 percent loyalty to you,” he said. “We will continue to mobilize and ensure that peace is maintained. For those who want to cause trouble, we know them, and we are engaging them constructively.”

Responding, Governor Bassey Edet Otu commended the youth leaders for their maturity and commitment to peace, noting that their role is critical in sustaining stability and development in the state.

“You have shown capacity and leadership within a very short period,” the Governor said. “That is something we should all be proud of.”

He added: “I am proud of the quality of leadership emerging among our young people. In your time, whether anyone likes it or not, you will take your place. So, continue with the good work you are doing.”

C’River Forestry Comm Moves Against Illegal Timber Dumping, Issues 2-Week Evacuation Deadline

CALABAR – The Cross River State Forestry Commission (CRSFC) has intensified its enforcement drive against illegal timber dumping across the state, issuing a two-week ultimatum to timber dealers to evacuate all logs stored along roadsides.

In a press statement signed by CEO of the Commission, Rt. Hon. Dr. George O'ben-Etchi, the Commission expressed concern over the rising practice of indiscriminate timber dumping along major roads, describing it as a clear violation of existing forestry regulations.

The Commission noted that government policy clearly designates approved gantries for the storage and processing of timber, stressing that the unlawful use of roadsides not only undermines regulatory compliance but also disrupts the operations of monitoring and evacuation teams.

According to the statement, the illegal practice poses a serious challenge to sustainable forestry management efforts and weakens ongoing reforms aimed at ensuring proper resource governance across Cross River State.

“All timber dealers are hereby directed to immediately evacuate all timber from roadside locations to officially approved government gantries within two (2) weeks from the date of this notice,” (8th April, 2026) the Commission stated.

It warned that failure to comply with the directive will attract strict enforcement actions, including the confiscation of any timber found unlawfully deposited along roadsides.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable forestry practices, responsible resource management, and environmental protection, noting that the current enforcement action is part of broader efforts to restore order in the timber value chain.

It further directed all Commissioners, Zonal Officers, Forest Officers, and Chief Rangers to ensure full compliance and strict enforcement of the directive across all operational areas of the state.

The Forestry Commission emphasized that the move is aimed at strengthening accountability within the timber industry while safeguarding the state’s forest resources for long-term environmental and economic sustainability.
