Emerges Clear Front-Runner, as Early Political Signals Shape Reps Race

CALABAR – High Chief Henry Onwe has emerged winner of an online opinion poll ahead of the 2027 House of Representatives race for the Ogoja/Yala Federal Constituency, defeating the incumbent and four other aspirants.
The informal poll, conducted across four Facebook timelines, asked participants to select their preferred aspirant among six contenders from Yala Local Government Area, which is expected to produce the next candidate for the constituency seat.
At the end of the exercise, Onwe secured a commanding 73 votes out of a total of 108 participants, far ahead of his closest rival, Barrister Godwin Offiono, the incumbent lawmaker who garnered 14 votes.
Hon. Jude Ngaji, polled 9 votes, while Dr Julius Okputu recorded 5 votes. Hon. Mike Usibe received 4 votes, and Mr Francis Ekpo trailed with 3 votes.
Observers note that although the poll was not conducted under any political party platform and involved a relatively small sample size, it provides an early glimpse into voter sentiment and emerging political dynamics within the constituency.
Participants, largely drawn from Ogoja and Yala local government areas, accompanied their votes with comments expressing support, personal convictions, and expectations from the aspirants.
Political analysts say the outcome, while not definitive, may signal growing grassroots momentum for Onwe as political activities gradually build toward the 2027 general elections.
They, however, caution that online polls remain limited in scope and cannot substitute for broader electoral engagement, party primaries, and on-ground mobilization.
With the race still in its early stages, stakeholders anticipate increased political consultations, alignments, and strategic positioning among aspirants in the coming months.
