C'River Youth Commissioner Urges Peaceful Engagement Over Protests

CALABAR – The Cross River State Commissioner for Youth Development and Skills Acquisition, Barr. Odum-Ijom Ukam, has called on the youth of the state to reject calls for protests and instead embrace peaceful and constructive dialogue to address their concerns.

In a statement, Barr. Ukam acknowledged the frustrations and challenges faced by Nigerian youths but emphasized that violence and destruction are not viable solutions. He urged the youth to engage in peaceful advocacy and constructive dialogue, aligning with the 'PEOPLE FIRST' agenda of Governor Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu.

"Protests can lead to destruction, violence, and hurt our own communities," Barr. Ukam stated. "Instead, let us engage in dialogue with our leaders, participate in community development projects, and support initiatives that promote peace and progress in our dear state."

The Commissioner expressed concerns about the potential for protests to be hijacked by dissidents, leading to instability and violence reminiscent of the ENDSARS protests of 2020. He urged the youth to avoid such destructive events and to focus on building a stable and peaceful society.

Barr. Ukam highlighted the proactive steps taken by Governor Otu's administration to address youth welfare and development in Cross River State. He noted the government's commitment to empowering youths and addressing their concerns through various infrastructural projects and human-capital development initiatives.

"The government of Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu is taking proactive steps to address the welfare and development of youths in Cross River State," Barr. Ukam said. "Let us work together to support and protect the various initiatives of the 'PEOPLE FIRST' Government to build a brighter future for our state and nation."

The Commissioner concluded his statement by calling on the youth to choose the path of peace, unity, and progress, and to say no to protests and yes to a brighter future.

NUJ lauds NDDC for rehabilitating roads, installing solar lights in Calabar

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Cross River State Council, has commended the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for the rehabilitation of some roads and the installation of solar lights in some of the streets in Calabar, the State capital. 

This was disclosed in a communique issued at the end of the NUJ Congress held at the Ernest Etim Bassey Press Conference in Calabar on Wednesday, 24th July 2024.

"Congress commends the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for the installation of solar lights in some streets in the Calabar Metropolis and the rehabilitation of some roads in Calabar," the communique read in part. 

The Congress which was presided over by the Council Chairman, Comrade Archibong Bassey, also highlighted various issues affecting the Union, Cross River State and the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The journalists also commended the State and Federal Government for improved security, and groundbreaking road construction as well as frowned at the delay of work at the Calabar-Itu road which almost took the life of a journalist and her family two weeks ago. 

"Congress appreciates Cross River State Government and the Federal Government on the level of improvements on security matters and other policies geared towards repositioning the nation.

"Congress expresses displeasure on the prolonged delay in the completion of Calabar-Itu Federal Highway, saying it is unhealthy and poses a serious setback on the economic development of Cross River and Akwa Ibom States, therefore, calling on the Federal Government to ensure the speedy completion of the road project

"Congress commends the Cross River State Government for the groundbreaking for construction of Adiabo-Ikoneto road in Odukpani LGA," parts of the communique read.

Converseer reports that the NDDC under its representative in the state, Rt. Hon. Orok Duke, has rehabilitated roads in Etta-Agbor, K. Duke Street off Chamley and its environs and other places in the Calabar Metropolis.

Duke has also overseen the Commission's installation of solar street lights in some of the streets, Immigration Service, Nigeria Police Command, and other places and establishments in Calabar.

The NDDC through Orok Duke has distributed palliatives to communities affected by floods including Bayside and Esierebom in Calabar, Ikot Offiong in Odukpani, Returnees in Bakassi, Akpabuyo and other parts of the state.

"We intend to add value to what this present government is doing. On our own part at NDDC, we are going to insist that all those parts that have been neglected and are still suffering will be taken care of," Duke said while distributing palliatives to the people of Ikot Offiong in May.

CRSCF Gives 6 Reasons C'Riverians should shun Protest.#EndBadGovernanceInNigeria Protest

As the 1st of August 2024 draw closer, Cross River State government and other groups in the State have continued to urge young persons and organisers of the planned #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest to shelve their plans and embrace peaceful dialogue. 

Notable among groups driving this narrative is the  Cross River South Consultative Forum (CRSCF). The Forum in a press statement acknowledges the constitutional right of citizens to peacefully assemble and protest. However, it is advising that they reconsider their plans stating 6 infallible reasons why the planned protest do not represent the best interests of the state at the moment. 

The statement which was signed by all members of the Forum reads in full: 

RE: Nationwide Protest on 1st August 2024

The Cross River South Consultative Forum (CRSCF) acknowledges the constitutional right of citizens to peacefully assemble and protest. This right is a cornerstone of democracy, providing a lawful avenue for citizens to express their grievances and advocate for change. However, in light of the planned nationwide #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest on 1st August 2024, we are calling on all indigenes and residents of Cross River State, especially those in Calabar, the state capital, not to participate in any protests, demonstrations, or anti-government marches for the following reasons:

1. Security Concerns: The primary responsibility of any government is to ensure the safety and security of its citizens. Given the current state of insecurity in various parts of the country, large gatherings pose a significant risk of escalation and potential violence. The safety of our people cannot be compromised.

2. Economic Stability: The aftermath of the EndSARS protest in 2020 saw extensive destruction of property and businesses in Cross River State. This resulted in significant economic setbacks and a loss of livelihood for many residents. The planned protest has the potential to cause similar disruptions, further compounding the economic challenges we currently face.

3. Constructive Dialogue: It is essential to address grievances through constructive dialogue and engagement with relevant authorities. The CRSCF encourages all concerned citizens to utilize available channels for dialogue and advocacy, ensuring that their voices are heard in a manner that promotes unity and progress.

4. Historical Precedent: The EndSARS protest, while well-intentioned, led to widespread devastation in our state. The looting, vandalism, and destruction of public and private property have left scars that are still healing. During the EndSARS protest, properties of prominent Cross Riverians were specifically targeted for destruction and looting. We must learn from our past and seek alternative ways to effect change without endangering lives and property.

5. Potential for Hijacking: No matter how well-intentioned, the possibility of subterranean forces hijacking the protest to unleash massive destruction and looting of public and private properties is real. This risk cannot be ignored.

6. Government Commitment: The government of Cross River State, led by Governor Bassey Otu, remains committed to addressing the issues of bad governance, insecurity, unemployment, and hunger. Efforts are ongoing to implement policies that will bring about sustainable development and improve the quality of life for all citizens. Constructive engagement with the government can yield more effective and lasting solutions.

Finally, while the CRSCF respects the right to peaceful protest, we believe that the planned #DayOfRage demonstration on 1st August 2024 is not in the best interest of our state and its people. We urge all organizers and participants to prioritize peace, security, and constructive dialogue in our collective pursuit of a better Nigeria.

We call on all citizens to join hands in building a more secure and prosperous Cross River State and Nigeria at large.

Solemn Assembly: C'River's Glory will be Restored in Greater Fold - Otu

Calabar witnessed an unprecedented turnout as residents gathered for the fourth edition of the Solemn Assembly, a quarterly gospel program initiated by Rev. (Mrs.) Eyoanwan Bassey Otu, the Wife of the Governor of Cross River State. This event has proven to be a beacon of spiritual rejuvenation, gradually restoring the state's glory through its consistent and heartfelt gatherings.

Held in Calabar, the assembly drew residents from all three Senatorial districts of the state, emphasizing the unifying and transformative power of the program. The theme of this edition, "Greater Glory," resonated deeply with the attendees and the current trajectory of Cross River State.

Representing the Governor, Sen. (Prince) Bassey Otu, the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, highlighted the timeliness of the theme. "The theme for this edition is timely for us as a state because we have just been restored to our pride of place as one of the oil-producing states in Nigeria," he stated. He further shared significant milestones, including the recent Memorandum of Understanding with Afrexim Bank, securing $3.5 million for the Bakassi deep sea port, and the influx of investors into the state. "I assure you that very soon, the glory of Cross River State will return in even greater folds in Jesus' name, Amen," Odey proclaimed.

Rev. Otu, represented by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Religious Matters, Apostle Frank Umoh, reiterated the theme's significance and the assembly's objectives. "The last time we gathered for our Solemn Assembly, we had the theme 'Forgiveness,' and we forgave ourselves from the depths of our hearts. Therefore, it is natural that we enjoy Greater Glory from the Lord, hence the theme of today's event," Umoh explained. He prayed for continued blessings, "It is my prayer that after today, everyone seated here would enjoy greater glory in all aspects of their lives, and as a state, we have gotten into an era of greater glory in Jesus' name."

The event's success was evident in the sheer number of attendees, with people from diverse backgrounds coming together in unity. The program featured powerful choir renditions, fervent prayers, and inspiring sermons, all contributing to the spiritual upliftment of Cross River State.

"C'River Cannot Afford to Fail Again" - Bong Duke

CALABAR – After an eight-year hiatus that left the state in disarray with numerous administrative lapses, the Cross River State Government has launched a decisive effort to restore its former glory. The government has organized a two-day capacity-building training for Planning Research and Statistics (PRS) Officers. This initiative is seen as a critical step in reversing years of neglect and reinforcing effective governance.

The training, conducted by Professor Ndem Ayara, aimed to equip PRS officers with vital skills for strategic action planning. Dr. Bong Duke, Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the State Planning Commission, emphasized the necessity of this training, echoing the commitment of the People's First government led by Governor Senator (Prince) Bassey Edet Otu.

"We cannot afford to fail again," declared Mr. Duke. "Cross River State cannot continue to suffer from the administrative inefficiencies of the past. The capacity of our planning officers must be built because planning is integral to the development and implementation of sustained economic and social growth."

Dr. Duke expressed his gratitude to Governor Otu for his determination to reposition the state's civil service for optimal service delivery. He also praised Professor Ayara for his invaluable contributions and expertise in strategic planning, which are crucial in training the next generation of planners in Cross River State.

Professor Ayara echoed the importance of meticulous planning, cautioning against reckless budgeting. "If we continue to play games around the budget, we will mismanage state resources. Budgeting without a plan is reckless," he warned, stressing the need for alignment between the state's plans and its budget.

Permanent Secretary of the State Planning Commission, Mrs. Mbong Atu Ausaja, highlighted the importance of incorporating Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into the plans of various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

Participants of the training expressed their appreciation, noting that it would significantly enhance their capabilities. They also called on the commission to create a supportive working environment and provide the necessary tools for effective planning and implementation.

Organised Labour, PWD, Others Laud SEMA Over Hitch- Free Palliatives Distribution In C'River

Beneficiaries of the federal government palliatives currently distributed by Cross River State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA have applauded the agency for  a peaceful and effective  distribution system. 

According to them, method adopted by SEMA has gone a long way in ensuring that the palliatives get to the targeted beneficiaries seamlessly without hiccups.

Speaking,leader of persons living with disability in Cross River Stephen Okuniba lauded the agency for the humane consideration accorded to those living with disability noting that the gesture has given them a sense of belonging.

In his words" I want to appreciate President Bola Tinubu and Governor Bassey Otu  for deliberate efforts to ameliorate current hardship ravaging the country. This relief is highly appreciated and the fact that we were listed as targeted beneficiaries has given us a sense of belonging"

Also speaking, the Chairman, of the Nigerian Labour Congress in Cross River expressed appreciation to the state government for ensuring that state civil servants were captured for the palliatives.

" We we met SEMA to inspect the arrival of the palliatives. We discovered that NLC and TUC were not  captured on the list from National Emergency Management Agency, unlike NULGE

But I want to thank the DG for his proactive disposition. He was able to get additional grains from the state government with a view of ensuring that other critical stakeholders were captured in relief incentives.  Kudos also must be given to Governor Bassey Otu for facilitating the procurement of additional grains.

"We got  about two thousand and twenty bags of rice,beans and garri all in 10kg sizes. We intend to share it across MDAs to enable our  workforce of over twelve thousand get a share"

Commenting on the progress of distribution, Director General of State Emergency Management Agency SEMA, Apostle James Anam disclosed that" To ensure a hitch free distribution exercise, we had to develop a template tailored to guarantee that the palliatives get to the targeted beneficiaries enumerated by NEMA.  We also have a  register where everyone representive of the various must signed against the items collected to promote accountability and transparency"

We are hugely grateful to the state government for funding the procurement of additional grains to augment the consignment we received from the federal government. This has enabled us to extend the relief package to most of our people cutting across groups and individuals especially the less privileged. We know it's not enough,but at least it will caution the present situation on ground while government thrive to address the root cause of the prevailing economic challenges confronting the country"

CALABAR - Comrade Emmanuel Olayi emerged as the chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Cross River State Chapter, following a keenly contested election held yesterday.

Olayi, who hails from Obanliku LGA, secured his victory through a consensus reached by all eight aspirants for the position of State Chairman. The elections, scheduled for Friday, 19th July, at the U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar, saw all candidates undergo security screening and sign a Peace Accord, facilitated by the State Security Service (SSS) and the office of the State Security Adviser.

The Cross River State Commissioner for Youth and Skills Development, Barr. Ijom-odum Ukam, expressed satisfaction with the entire process leading to Olayi's emergence as Youth Chairman. Ukam noted the maturity and spirit of sportsmanship displayed by the candidates, urging them to support the new chairman.

The newly elected chairman, Comrade Emmanuel Olayi, moved to tears, expressed gratitude to his fellow contestants for finding him worthy. He pledged to carry out his duties in accordance with the council's constitution and appreciated the efforts of Governor Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu, the Commissioner for Youths, Barr. He made this call in his office on Friday, shortly before the commencement of the election, when a delegation from the National Youth Council (NYC) led by State Commissioner for Youth and Entrepreneurship, Barr. He assured the NYC leadership of government support to ensure free and fair elections for the State Chapter offices. Odey expressed pride in the youths of Cross River State who are using their time and talents for the good of the nation, in contrast to those involved in social vices such as kidnapping and violent demonstrations.

"We believe in encouraging the youth population. That is why there is fair representation of the youth in the present administration," he said. He charged them to ensure the elections were free and fair, devoid of violence.

The Commissioner for Youth, Barr. Ijom Ukam, highlighted the purpose of their visit as updating the Deputy Governor on the activities preceding and during the election. Ukam affirmed that, with the Deputy Governor's encouragement and the State government's support, the election would be hitch-free, allowing the National Youth Council's visions and ideals to be achieved in Cross River State.

Ambassador Dokubo, the President of the National Youth Council, reiterated the national leadership's resolve to ensure a free and fair election in the State. He called on all Nigerian youths to shun violence and embrace diplomacy in addressing their grievances.

FG call for Dialogue Over Nationwide Protests, Warns Against Violence

CALABAR - As the Federal Government continue to engage with stakeholders on the country's economic, social, and political challenges, it 

has appealed to the organizers of the proposed nationwide protests to opt for dialogue rather than resorting to disorder. 

In a press statement, the Director General of the National Orientation Agency, Mallam Lanre Issa Onilu, said the NOA's nationwide structure has successfully identified the sponsors of the proposed protests and the potential flashpoints. The government, he said, is prepared to take measures to prevent any violent occurrences in these identified locations.

Mallam Onilu reassured that the channels of communication with the government and its various arms remains open for dialogue. He emphasized that the NOA respects citizens' right to protest and associate freely, in line with democratic principles.

However, he expressed concern over the true intentions behind the protests. "The identities of many of the masterminds behind the protest have been identified, along with their collaborators residing abroad," he stated. "The government is taking necessary actions to stop their subversive plans."

Onilu further alleged that the motives of those behind the planned protests are not about governance or the state of the economy, but rather a decoy to destabilize the country, incite mayhem, and perpetrate violence for narrow political reasons. He warned that the protests aim to portray Nigeria as unstable to the international community, as part of a grand design to intimidate the government and seek patronage from larger sponsors.

The NOA is intensifying efforts in civil intelligence gathering and sensitizing community leaders, parents, and youths across the 774 local governments on the need for vigilance and collective preventive actions, Onilu added.
