CALABAR — As our beloved son, Hon. Ankpo Pius Edet, marks his 45th birthday today, we, the people of Uyanga and Dusangha, join hands in giving thanks to God for His grace and to Governor Bassey Edet Otu for recognizing and elevating the exceptional talent of this distinguished leader.  

Hon. Ankpo Pius is a shining star, groomed in the fear of God and a testament to hard work, humility, and quiet diligence. Known for his reserved nature and unwavering commitment to progress, he has continually dedicated his efforts to uplifting our community.  

Before venturing into politics, Hon. Ankpo had already made remarkable strides in business, particularly in the chippings and haulage industry. With over 20 tipping trucks in his fleet, he provided employment opportunities for many, creating a ripple effect of prosperity in our community. It was this same dedication that caught the attention of former Governor Ben Ayade, who appointed him as a commissioner in the state executive council.  

In 2023, following the election of His Excellency, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, as Governor of Cross River State, Hon. Ankpo was once again called to serve, this time as Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure. Tasked with a zero-pothole mandate and massive infrastructural transformation, Hon. Ankpo has risen to the occasion, delivering an impressive array of projects within the last year.  

Key Achievements in Infrastructure Development  

Under his leadership, the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure has embarked on and completed several critical road projects, including:  

1. The construction and dualization of Esuk-Utan Road.  

2. The rehabilitation of Parliamentary Extension Road.  

3. The construction of Air Force Lieutenant Road and drains.  

4. The rehabilitation of Marian Road.  

5. The construction of Yellow Duke Road and a mini-bridge in Calabar South.  

6. The Oban-Nsan Road project in Akamkpa Local Government.  

Beyond the Calabar metropolis, Hon. Ankpo has extended infrastructure development to the Central and Northern parts of the state, including:  

1. The rehabilitation of Ndok Junction to Abakpa-Igoli-Monaya Junction Road in Ogoja.  

2. The construction of Ogoja Ring Roads in Ogoja LGA.  

3. The Akreha Road and Bridge Project in Yala LGA.  

These accomplishments demonstrate Hon. Ankpo's unwavering commitment to realizing the "People-First" mantra of Governor Otu's administration, laying a solid foundation for Cross River State's infrastructural transformation.

Akamkpa LGA Chairman Overhauls Market Revenue Management

CALABAR — In a significant move to ensure accountability and efficiency in revenue management, the Executive Chairman of Akamkpa Local Government Area, Hon. Ophot Felix Akposi (KSJI), has announced the termination of all revenue contracts and the dissolution of committees overseeing markets in the council area.

According to a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman, Mr. Daniel Agbor, the decision stems from a resolution by the Akamkpa Legislative Arm dated 28th November 2024.

Accordingly all markets within the Local Government Area have been placed under the supervision and direct oversight of councillors representing the respective political wards. This restructuring aims to address irregularities that have plagued the internally generated revenue (IGR) system and to promote transparency, accountability, and sound governance.

The statement added that all unauthorized revenue collection or payment will attract strict legal consequences as stipulated by federal law.

The Chairman emphasized that these measures are designed to sanitize the revenue system and ensure equitable resource distribution. Stakeholders are urged to comply with the directive to avoid disruptions. Queries regarding revenue points or designated personnel can be directed to the council office.

C'river Government Moves To Enforce Mining Regulations

CALABAR – In a bid to address illegal mining and strengthen security across the state, the Cross River State Government, under the leadership of His Excellency, Prince Bassey Edet Otu, has rolled out measures targeting mineral title holders.

The Chairman of the Anti-Illegal Mining Committee and Taskforce, Prince Paul Effiong, in a statement announced that all mineral title holders operating within the state are required to undergo a clearance process. The exercise, which includes the presentation of documents and relevant information for security verification, is scheduled to take place from December 9 to December 13, 2024, at the Ministry of Finance Hall, Calabar.

According to the Prince Effiong, this step is aimed at identifying legitimate operators and curbing illegal mining activities that contribute to insecurity in the state.

Recall that the committee had recently conducted a mandatory verification exercise for its appointed members and taskforce personnel. According to a press release issued by the Secretary of the committee, Michael Akaba, the verification was conducted on November 25, 2024, to ensure the inclusion of only committed individuals in the fight against illegal mining. Akaba emphasized that failure to comply with this directive would result in termination of appointment, as the government remains resolute in eliminating "ghost workers" and ensuring active participation in combating illicit activities.

Rt. Hon. Davies Etta Advocates for Inclusion on International Day of Persons with Disabilities

CALABAR — The Deputy Leader of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Davies Etta, has called for greater inclusion and accessibility for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) as the world marks the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

In his message, Rt. Hon. Etta emphasized the significance of the day in promoting awareness about the rights, contributions, and resilience of PWDs. He emphasized the need for society to break barriers and create equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

"As a state and a people, let us recommit to fostering understanding, breaking barriers, and creating a society where everyone can thrive, regardless of ability," he said.

Etta reiterated the commitment of the Cross River State House of Assembly to policies and legislation that enhance accessibility and inclusion for PWDs. He urged citizens to recognize the potentials of PWDs and work collectively toward a more equitable and inclusive society.

CALABAR — Pastor Dr. Bong Duke, Vice Chairman and CEO of the Cross River State Planning Commission, has reiterated the state government's unwavering commitment to promoting inclusion and accessibility for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) as the world marks the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

In a statement issued to commemorate the day, Dr. Duke emphasized the critical role of inclusion in achieving sustainable development and fostering a society where no one is left behind. He noted that the state, under the visionary leadership of His Excellency, Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu, remains dedicated to policies and programs that uplift PWDs and ensure their full participation in governance and development processes.

"The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is a reminder of our shared responsibility to create an inclusive society where every individual's abilities are recognized and nurtured," Dr. Duke stated. "Cross River State is committed to embedding accessibility and inclusion in all facets of development, ensuring that every citizen can thrive and contribute meaningfully."

Defection: Group Hails Labour Party Lawmaker for Joining APC in C'River

CALABAR —The Cross River South Consultative Forum (CRSCF), a coalition of political leaders and community stakeholders in the southern senatorial district of Cross River State, has commended Hon. Bassey Akiba for his decision to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Hon. Akiba, who represents Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency in the 10th House of Representatives, recently announced his defection from the Labour Party (LP) to the APC. His move has been widely celebrated as a strategic alignment with the progressive vision of Governor Bassey Otu, whose administration operates under the mantra of The People's First.

In a statement signed by prominent members, including Hon. Eyo Nsa Ekpo, Esq., and Sir Maurice Effiwatt, the CRSCF praised Hon. Akiba for prioritizing the welfare of his constituents. The group informed that his decision was not driven by political disloyalty but by a desire to align with a leadership style that delivers results.

"Hon. Akiba's defection is a testament to his commitment to good governance and his determination to ensure the collective progress of his people. His move to the APC reflects his dedication to tangible development and effective representation," the statement read.

16 Days of Activism: Duke Reaffirms Zero Tolerance for VAWG in C'River

 CALABAR —   Chief Orok Otu Duke, the Cross River State representative at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), has emphasized his commitment to addressing the issue of violence against women and girls in Cross River, declaring zero tolerance for Violence Against Women and Girls. 

In a statement to mark the 2024 edition of  16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), Chief Duke reiterated the NDDC's zero-tolerance stance on sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and pledged to use his position to drive meaningful change in the state.

Chief Duke informed that SGBV remains a pressing issue in Cross River's communities, exacerbating poverty and hampering development. He emphasized the need for tailored interventions to protect vulnerable women and girls, particularly in rural areas.

"As a proud son of Cross River, I understand the unique challenges our women and girls face, from urban centers to remote villages. Violence against them is an affront to our shared values of dignity and respect. At the NDDC, we are committed to ensuring that Cross River becomes a model for tackling gender-based violence in the Niger Delta region," he said.

Chief Duke acknowledged the progress made by Cross River State government led by Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu in addressing GBV, including the passage of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law by the State House of Assembly in 2021. He stressed the importance of implementing the law at the grassroots level, where many cases of GBV remain underreported or ignored.

"We applaud the bold steps taken by our state government in enacting the VAPP Law. However, laws must translate to action on the ground. We must ensure that survivors in our communities can access justice, and perpetrators are held accountable," Chief Duke added.

He noted that the NDDC, through its programs, is committed to promoting the welfare of women and girls in Cross River. Initiatives include community awareness campaigns, economic empowerment projects for women, and partnerships with local organizations to support survivors of GBV.

The former lawmaker also called for collaboration among traditional rulers, local governments, and civil society groups in Cross River to foster a culture of zero tolerance for violence. He urged citizens to be vigilant and proactive in reporting and preventing abuse in their communities.

"The fight against gender-based violence is not for one organization or individual—it is a collective responsibility. We must unite as Cross Riverians to reject violence in all forms and create an environment where our women and girls can thrive," he stated.

The 16 Days of Activism, observed annually from November 25 to December 10, underscores global efforts to eliminate violence against women and girls. This year's theme, "UNiTE: Activism to End Violence Against Women and Girls," aligns with Chief Duke's vision for a safer and more equitable Cross River.

In closing, Chief Duke reaffirmed his personal commitment to supporting initiatives that promote gender equity and uplift women and girls across the state.

"As your representative at the NDDC, I will continue to champion policies and projects that empower our women and girls, ensuring they live without fear of violence. Together, we can build a Cross River State where everyone has the opportunity to flourish," he concluded.

Akamkpa LG Boss Commits to Strengthening Partnership with COE

In a bid to foster educational and community development, the Chairman of Akamkpa Local Government Council, Hon. (Ophot) Felix Akposi KSJI, held a strategic meeting with the Governing Board of the College of Education - Akamkpa. The meeting, described as a "family discussion," centred on fostering collaboration and strengthening the institution's role as a bedrock for future leaders.

Hon. Akposi, who attributed his emergence as chairman to divine providence, assured the board of his commitment to prioritising the interests of the local government and the college. "The College of Education is the heart of Akamkpa, and elevating the institution is a step in the right direction," he stated, pledging to support the school in achieving a facelift that would bolster its impact on the community.

The chairman further emphasised the importance of unity and progressive thinking among the people of Akamkpa, describing the meeting as an opportunity to align visions for mutual benefit. He expressed optimism about a "positive revolution" in the local government, adding that Akamkpa is on the path to transformation. "We need to reengineer the minds of our young ones and persuade our children to embrace education," he urged.

Prof. Patrick Asuquo, the Provost of the College and a member of the Governing Board, lauded the chairman's vision and expressed the board's readiness to collaborate with the council in areas such as research, data generation, and teaching practices. "This partnership will not only strengthen the institution but also empower the local community to reclaim its pride of place," Prof. Asuquo remarked.

The board secretary, Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Bob Etta, highlighted the need for sustained dialogue and mutual respect between the council and the college. Using a symbolic analogy, he said, "One must meet the owner of a house to have a resounding welcome." He stressed that it was time for the local government and the institution to reclaim their shared heritage for the benefit of the host community.

Addressing the challenges facing the local government, the chairman acknowledged the gaps that had existed since the expiration of the last administration. However, he described these challenges as opportunities for growth and development. "Challenges are not meant to scare us but to strengthen us," Hon. Akposi remarked, committing everything into God's hands.

The chairman reiterated his commitment to unity, prayer, and a progressive mindset, which he described as vital ingredients for success. He assured the board of a positive and committed engagement to ensure the goals of both the council and the college are achieved.

In a call to action, the chairman stressed the need to inculcate a sense of responsibility among young people in Akamkpa. "Education remains the cornerstone of a prosperous future, and we must all work together to create opportunities for our children to thrive," he said.

The meeting ended on a hopeful note, with both parties agreeing to explore areas of collaboration that would drive development and educational excellence in Akamkpa.

Ikom LG Boss Commits To Support Newly Formed Youth Mobilisers Community

CALABAR —The Local Government Chairman of Ikom Local Government Area, Pastor Mrs Mercy Nsor has committed to ensuring the newly formed Youth Mobiliser Community achieves it's objectives.

This was contained in a message delivered by the council boss recently in Ikom during a Town Hall meeting held to boost youth participation in governance. She expressed confidence that the Youth Mobiliser Community will be a booster of the Prince Otu's led administration especially coming at a time when structures that will strengthen the good works of the governor are being built. Adding that the first lady will surely support the group..

"I am standing here as the mother of the youths, boys and girls, to support you, especially in this season where we are building structures to strengthen the good works of His Excellency, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, and Her Excellency, Bishop Eyoanwan Otu."

 "I want to thank you all, especially our leader, SA on Youth Mobilisation, Comrade Daniel Obo Jr., for gathering here today for a good course, and I want to believe God that as you work with him to build the Central Youths, you will succeed.

"I want to implore us to key into what this Town Hall Meeting would bring, its leadership and visions. On my own, I'll discuss your visions with Her Excellency and I am sure she'll give you the needed support." She concluded. 

Comrade Daniel Obo, Special Adviser on Youth Mobilisation to the Governor of Cross River State who Inaugurated the 66 Member  Youth Mobiliser Community for central senatorial district informed that the community is charged with the responsibility of driving government's policies and getting youths' buy-in of government programs. 

Obo who charged the community to keep aside personal or financial gains as the task before them is herculean, warned that anyone not ready to serve is permitted to excuse his or herself "Anyone not ready to serve, thinking it's a money-making process should withdraw immediately." Obo warned.

The former youth leader added "It is an avenue where young people can have and also assist in facilitating others to have access to government programmes at all levels meant for them."

He revealed that the launch will continue in the remaining two senatorial districts - north and south.

The Chairman of the event, Hon. Kasetima Mentui, Councillor representing Ikom Urban Ward II and Deputy Leader of Ikom Legislative Council, and Hon. Markpeace Osim, Councillor representing Ofutop Ward II and Majority Leader of Ikom Legislative Council, also pledged their support for the inaugurated Community, charging other youths to make themselves available so that when opportunities come, they won't be left behind.

The Guest Speaker, Dr. Agbor Onyi, presented a paper on the theme "Season of Sweetness Reloaded: The Place of the Central Youth."

Dr. Agbor gave the participants a peep at the opportunities that can be tapped from.

Among the distinguished panellists are Honourable Markpeace Osim, Majority Leader of the Ikom Legislative Council; Wofai Eteng Otu, a champion for gender equality and DG of the Cross River State Political Network; Comrade Nji Nji, a vibrant voice for youth advocacy; and Samaroh Irek, CEO of Samasa Farms and a trailblazer in agriculture and entrepreneurship.

Anambra Innovation Week 2024 Kicks Off in Awka, Showcasing Technology, Youth Empowerment

The highly anticipated Anambra Innovation Week 2024 commenced today at the International Conference Center, Awka, with a focus on fostering innovation, collaboration, and shaping the digital future of Anambra and Africa. The five-day event saw tech enthusiasts, industry leaders, and youth participants in attendance.

In his keynote address, Anambra State Deputy Governor, Dr. Onyeka Ibezim, lauded the state Governor Prof. Charles Chukwuma  Soludo, for his visionary leadership, particularly in empowering youth through programmes like "One Youth, Two Skills." He highlighted the state commitment to technology and innovation, referencing plans to establish an Anambra Silicon Valley. 

The Deputy Governor who officially declared the event open, urged participants to leverage the event to enhance their skills and contribute to Anambra's tech-driven growth.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Solution Innovation District (SID) Ms Chinwe Okoli  In her address on the theme, "Creating the Future of Africa Now," emphasized the urgent need for a technology-driven, inclusive Africa. She reiterated that Governor Soludo's launch of SID in 2022 was a pivotal step in building Anambra's digital future, noting that SID has since become a hub for innovation, empowering startups, training youth, and supporting the state's digital economy goals

She urged participants to maximize the opportunity to learn, connect, and share ideas that could drive sustainable change.

On his part, the Managing Director of Anambra Information Communication Technology Agency Mr. Fred Agbata  emphasized technology's role in problem-solving and the importance of collaboration for success. He encouraged participants to engage in the tech space, regardless of their expertise, noting the governor's focus on making Anambra a technology hub.

Also, the Chief Executive Officer of Premia Business Network, Mr. Bola Lawal, spoke about digital transformation, highlighting Nigeria's talent potential and the need for infrastructure to support emerging technologies. He praised Governor Soludo's tech-centric policies, stressing the importance of nurturing tech skills among the youth.

Other sessions, including discussions on innovation life cycles, emerging technology trends, and digital literacy, were led by notable speakers such as Daniel Chinagozi, Emeka Afigbo, and Emmanuel Essiet.

The event also saw the presence of key government figures, including  Commissioner for Ministry of Environment Dr. Felix Odimegwu, Commissioner For Youth Development Mr. Patrick Agha as well as United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) representatives, academia, and students.
