C’River Canaan Queens to Represent Nigeria at 2025 African Club Table Tennis Championships in Tunisia

CALABAR - Canaan Queens, the women's team of Canaan Table Tennis Club, Calabar, have been approved by the Nigerian Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) to represent Nigeria at the 2025 African Club Table Tennis Championships. The tournament will take place from February 22 to 24, 2025, in Tunis, Tunisia.

This approval follows Canaan Queens' remarkable performance at the 2024 African Club Table Tennis Championships held in Benghazi, Libya, where they emerged as runners-up. The team showcased their skills by defeating top clubs like Benghazi Al-Jadida Table Tennis Club of Libya and Commercial Bank Club of Ethiopia, before falling to Petrojet Table Tennis Club of Egypt in the finals. Their achievements in Libya underscored their status as one of Africa's leading table tennis teams.

In a statement issued by NTTF Secretary-General Oladayo Abulude, the federation confirmed that Canaan Queens would bear responsibility for their travel visas, flight tickets, and accommodation for the tournament. The club has also been advised to complete their registration promptly to avoid penalties for non-appearance, as stipulated by the championship organizers.

The 2025 tournament, organized by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Africa and hosted by the Tunisian Table Tennis Federation, will feature top teams from across the continent. The competition will take place at the Palais des Sports El Menzah, with both men's and women's team events structured in group and knockout formats.

Speaking on the team's preparation, Rt. Hon. Orok Duke, Chairman of Canaan Table Tennis Club, expressed confidence in the team's ability to excel in Tunisia. "We are proud to represent Nigeria again on the continental stage. Our focus is on improving our performance and making the nation proud," he said.

The Canaan Queens' participation in the Tunis championship further cements their growing reputation as a force to be reckoned with in African table tennis. Their remarkable journey has drawn praise from sports enthusiasts and officials alike, including Cross River State Governor, Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu, who has consistently lauded the club's efforts in promoting sports excellence.

Relocate from C'River or Else, Govt Warns Illegal Miners

CALABAR — The Cross River State Government has issued a stern warning to illegal miners, urging them to leave the state or face the full weight of the law. This follows the recent arrest of 21 suspected illegal miners by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area.

The suspects were paraded in Calabar by the NSCDC State Commandant, Dr. Charles Brown, who revealed that the operation was conducted in collaboration with the state anti-illegal mining committee, the task force, and other security agencies. According to him, illegal mining not only robs the government of revenue but also poses significant environmental and security risks.

"Illegal mining activities will no longer be tolerated in Cross River State. We are sending a strong message to those involved: relocate or be ready to face legal consequences," Dr. Brown warned. He added that the arrested suspects would be prosecuted after investigations are completed.

Backing the crackdown, Hon. Prince Paul Effiong, chairman of the anti-illegal mining committee and task force, emphasized that his team, which comprises operatives from the Civil Defence Corps, police, and military, would stop at nothing to rid the state of illegal miners.

"This is a warning to illegal miners: relocate now or face the consequences. We will ensure strict enforcement of mining regulations in the state," Effiong stated.

The latest action is in line with the government's earlier directive mandating all mineral title holders to undergo a clearance process to verify their legitimacy and curb illegal mining.

Authorities have also urged citizens to provide credible intelligence on illegal mining activities to sustain the fight against the menace and protect Cross River's environment and resources.

Niger Delta Students Launch Campaign Against Social Vices in C'River

CALABAR – The Niger Delta Students Union Government (NIDSUG) has launched a campaign against social vices, urging students and youths to reject cybercrime, drug abuse, cultism, and other harmful behaviors.

Speaking at the flag-off event recently in Calabar, NIDSUG National President, Comrade Scott Ogunsere, emphasized the dangers of cybercrime, highlighting its devastating effects on individuals and businesses. He urged students to embrace entrepreneurship and hard work instead of seeking quick wealth through fraudulent means.

"This initiative is a wake-up call for students to uphold integrity alongside academic excellence. Life after school requires character, and illegal wealth often leads to regret," Ogunsere stated.

The campaign, set to expand across the nine Niger Delta states, will feature campus ambassadors promoting the message within universities, polytechnics, and colleges.

Representing the Cross River State Deputy Governor, Special Assistant on Students Affairs, Kelvin Eyam, called for an attitudinal shift, stressing that cybercrime is not a solution to economic hardship.Adding that the government of Cross River State led by Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu has provided alternatives for young people to be engaged in productive activities. He further admonished young people to take advantage of these initiatives by the People First governor. 

Also speaking, the Deputy Commander of the Drugs Demand Reduction Department, Nandi Rose Lyn-Adah, decried the rising drug abuse rate and urged parents to instill discipline in their wards.

The event included a sensitization walk and the inauguration of student ambassadors to sustain the campaign across institutions.

Strengthening CROSIEC: Dr. Boco’s Leadership Amid Progress and Distractions

CALABAR Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission (CROSIEC) is the agency mandated to conduct, organize, and supervise local government elections within the state. Established with a mandate to consolidate free, fair, and credible electoral systems, CROSIEC is pivotal to ensuring grassroots democracy and strengthening local government governance. Aside from conducting elections, voter education, outreach to stakeholders, and electoral institutional reforms towards strengthening electoral integrity fall under the mandate of CROSIEC.

Since assuming the role of office as Chairman of CROSIEC, Dr. Ekong Boco has embarked on revitalizing the commission to operate with efficiency, transparency, and credibility. His tenure in office has been marked by significant infrastructural development, strategic human development, and commitment to professionalizing the operations of the commission. However, even with these commendable developments, unsubstantiated distractions hang heavy to undermine the achievements made.

Among Dr. Boco's first initiatives was the improvement of the deplorable state of the CROSIEC headquarters. Knowing that a cordial working environment is essential to effectiveness, he introduced the renovation of office buildings with a view to establishing a more efficient and homey atmosphere for staff. For further efficiency, he sought permission for the setup of a central store, an important building that is aimed at reducing congestion in office areas as well as optimizing administrative work.

In addition to office renovation, Dr. Boco has overseen the construction of a suitable parking lot for staff vehicles, enhancing tidiness within the premises. In addition, he has placed individual toilets in each commissioner's office—a contrast to the past when all the commissioners shared a single facility. A concrete road has also been constructed to facilitate smooth movement within the commission's premises, making it easier for staff and visitors.

These infrastructural improvements are a testament to Dr. Boco's vision of long-term institutional strengthening and sustainability, preparing CROSIEC for more efficiency in its mandate delivery.

The leadership of Dr. Boco transcends physical structures to the welfare of CROSIEC employees. In recognizing the central role of employees to ensure successful elections, he made it a point to engage the state government for payment of salary for newly employed civil servants at the commission. Although payment of salaries is handled by the office of the Accountant General, Dr. Boco went out of his way to advocate on behalf of affected workers, evidence of his commitment to their well-being.

His leadership is a demonstration of responsiveness and advocacy—two qualities that are paramount in nurturing an energized and productive workforce focused on performing in CROSIEC's election responsibilities.

In the midst of these palpable milestones, detractors have made an attempt to halt progress made by CROSIEC with the spread of misinformation and unfounded claims. Recent false reports alleging the existence of a commission-owned server and misplaced accusations about salary delays have sought to misrepresent the realities on the ground.

This is truly worrisome as media professionals have allowed themselves to be used as clog in the wheels of progress. It's important at this point to call on practitioners of journalism to consistently uphold the ethics of the profession and adhere to responsible and developmental journalism as well as factual reporting. A responsible journalist must prioritize fact-checking and objective analysis rather than sensationalism that misleads the public and distracts the public office holders.

I will not conclude this editorial without acknowledging the foresightedness of Governor Prince Bassey Edet Otu. The on-going revolution in CROSIEC is a testimonial to the visionary disposition of His Excellency, Governor Otu. With the appointment of Dr. Boco to lead the commission, the governor demonstrated that he was acutely aware of the need for competence, innovation, and progress in the state electoral commission.

Governor Otu's administration remains committed to people-centered policies and infrastructure renewal to ensure Cross Riverians benefit from sustainable leadership. His unapologetic support for CROSIEC's reforms also says much about his commitment to transparency, accountability, and electoral integrity. His action to appoint such very capable individuals as Dr. Boco reflects a broader agenda of positioning Cross River State towards stronger democratic and institutional development.

It is therefore important that all stakeholders come together to support these development efforts and not be swayed by issues that are of no great value. With continued support, CROSIEC will continue on its path of transformation, in compliance with Governor Otu's greater vision for a progressive and thriving Cross River State.

Fresh Trouble for UNICROSS Governing Body, as Lawmakers Insist on Proper Investigation

CALABAR — Four members of the 5th Governing council members of the University of Cross River State, UNICROSS have been recommended for immediate suspension by the Cross River State House of Assembly.

The governing council members include; Dr. Emmanuel Ettah, Dr. John Inah Ukam, Professor Mathew Nsing Ogar, and Professor Stephen Ochang, were recommended for suspension for alleged misconduct and abuse of office.

The Lawmakers informed that they are in receipt of several petitions against the council members. Deliberating on a petition by A. B. Cobham and Associates ( legal practitioners, Corporate and Real Estate Consultants) solicitors to Mr Emmanuel  Eyo, the petitioner, the Leader of the House and Member representing Odukpani State Constituency, Rt Hon Francis Bassey Asuquo, drew the attention of Members to the allegations of gross misconduct against; Dr Emmanuel Ettah, Dr John Inah Ukam, Prof Mathew Nsing Ogar and Prof Stephen Ochang during their tenure as Members of the 5th Governing Council of UNICROSS.

The allegations as stated in the petition include; Illegal Tenure Extension and Unlawful Sale of University Property. The petition indicates that Dr. Emmanuel Ettah refused to vacate office at the expiration of their tenure in September 2023 and also sold University Property between May and August 2024, almost a year after the expiration of their tenure. The petition also emphasized that the auctioning of University Equipment was in total violation of the Public Procurement Act and the Bureau of Public Procurement.

The Lawmakers, in their separate contributions, while deliberating on the petition, viewed the action of Dr Emmanuel Ettah and Co as a total violation of the Extant Laws establishing the University. They further stressed that the State Government's policy on the non-extension of tenures by public officers is still in force and emphasized that the continued stay in office of the Council Members after the expiration of their tenure is illegal.

They thereafter adopted the resolution moved by the Leader, Rt Hon Francis Bassey Asuquo(Odukpani ), and seconded by the Deputy Leader Rt Hon Davies Etta(Abi)  which states in part; 

 " having unanimously agreed, the House recommends the immediate suspension of Dr. Emmanuel Ettah, Dr. John Inah Ukam, Professor Mathew Nsing, and Professor Stephen Ochang. They are to be suspended from all activities of the University until a proper investigation is carried out by the House Committee on Judiciary, Public Service Matters, Public Petitions and Conflict Resolution".

The Speaker, Rt Hon Elvert Ayambem  assured that the House will carry out a thorough investigation on the matter and thereafter make appropriate recommendations to the Governor who is the Visitor to the University.

Otu Takes Steps Towards Assets Recovery and Land Encroachment in UNICROSS

CALABAR — The Cross River State Government, under the leadership of Governor Bassey Otu, has commenced an extensive investigation into the alleged illegal sale of about 400 assets belonging to the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) by the institution's previous council.

Leading the government's delegation, the Special Adviser on Asset Management and Recovery, Barrister Gilbert Agbor, had earlier informed the Vice Chancellor of the Institution that they were in the school at the instance of the governor who had requested thorough investigation into several petitions against the former governing council members over sales of about 400 properties belonging to the institution with following due process. He added that there have also been petitions and complaints over encroachment into the school's land by neighboring communities.  

After taking an on-the-spot assessment of the schools, Barr. Agbor confirmed to journalists that preliminary findings indicate the allegations are valid. He disclosed that several vehicles and a 500 kV generator listed in the petitions could not be found, reinforcing concerns about the unauthorized disposal of government property.

To address land encroachment, Agbor stated that the government will take decisive steps, including blocking the main access road to unauthorized construction sites and evicting illegal occupants. He warned that anyone found complicit in the illegal sale or occupation of university land would be held accountable, regardless of their status.

During the on-site assessment, Acting Vice Chancellor of UNICROSS, Professor Francisca Bassey, expressed deep concern over the encroachment challenges, noting that the university was originally designed for a much smaller student population. She emphasized that reclaiming the land is critical for expanding infrastructure to accommodate the growing student body and improve learning facilities.

Echoing the government's commitment, the Economic Adviser to the Governor, Professor Peter Oti, underscored that land encroachment and abandoned projects negatively impact the state's economy. He assured that the administration would restore order and ensure that public assets serve their intended purposes.

The move by Governor Otu's administration signals a strong commitment to protecting state-owned properties, reclaiming encroached lands, and fostering an enabling environment for academic and economic development in Cross River State.

CROSIEC Chairman Denies Reports of Unpaid Salaries Due to 'Rat-Eaten Server'

CALABAR – The Chairman of the Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission (CROSIEC), Dr. Ekon Boko, has dismissed recent media reports alleging that a server failure caused by rats was responsible for the non-payment of staff salaries. He described the claim as "completely false and misleading."

Speaking in an interview, Dr. Boko clarified that CROSIEC does not handle salary payments, as it done under the Accountant General's office. "We receive salaries like any other employee of the state government. We don't own a server, and we don't pay salaries directly," he stated.

Addressing concerns about the unpaid salaries of over 80 staff members recruited before the last local government elections, the CROSIEC chairman confirmed that their payments had been delayed. However, he assured that Governor Bassey Otu had graciously approved the salaries and that the Accountant General's office was already processing them for payment this March.

"The claim that a server issue caused the delay is unfounded because we do not operate any servers for salary payments or election results. Our records are manually stored," Dr. Boko explained.

He also criticized the reporter behind the viral claim, stating that due diligence was not conducted before publication. "The journalist should have reached out for clarification. Instead, he put out false information that amounts to blackmail," he said.

On staff welfare, the chairman acknowledged that while salaries had been delayed, the commission had prioritized improving work conditions. He highlighted the renovation of CROSIEC's office and the ongoing construction of a central store to enhance efficiency.

Dr. Boko urged staff to be patient and follow due processes in addressing grievances, emphasizing that civil servants should avoid resorting to social media sensationalism. "They are not a pressure group. There are proper channels to seek redress," he added.

With the commission now focusing on preparations for future elections, he expressed optimism that outstanding challenges, including mobility constraints, would be addressed soon.

100 Days in Office: Akamkpa LG boss disclose Source of Leadership Success

CALABAR — The Executive Chairman of Akamkpa Local Government Area, Hon. Chief Felix Akposi KSJ has described his journey to becoming council chairman as the handiwork of God. Adding that he owes gratitude to God alone.

Speaking in a special Thanksgiving service to mark his first 100 days in Office, Akposi revealed that his becoming  chairman of council was miraculously concluded by God in less than an hour. Stating that only an ungrateful person will not return back to give thanks and gratitude to God. 

"It is only an ingrate that will not appreciate God the way I do. From my aspiration to my candidacy and my eventual election, everything was divinely orchestrated by God. It has been God and God alone. ...I have indeed seen some changes in my life in the last 5 months and it's worth thanking God for all his goodness.' the Chairman asserted. 

The LG boss use the opportunity to also appreciate God for giving him a great and committed team to work with him. He said his team has been his support system giving him the needed backup to succeed. 

Akposi likened the bond and unity between him, the legislators, his staff and  appointees as that of a bunch of broom that cannot be broken, but will achieve greater task because of their unity and oneness. 

"My team is like a bunch of broom, we cannot be broken. My team has been my greatest backbone, the support I get from them is second to none, Thier cooperation and support is part of the secret to the success recorded even in most of the projects we have executed so far."

In his homily, the Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Joseph Obaina Agbor, Cathedral Administrator, Sacred Heart Cathedral, Calabar charged the Council Chairman and politicians to have a heart of thanksgiving towards God as it will propel more blessings from God. 

"When you acknowledge God as the source of your elevation, He entrusts you with more. Leadership is a calling, and those entrusted with governance must never forget to return thanks to the One who ordains kings and removes them at will," Rev. Fr. Agbor declared

The event which was well attended had the Member Representing Akamkpa/Biase Federal Constituency in the House of Representative, Dr. Emil Inyang, Members Representing Akamkpa one and two in the Cross River State House of Assembly, Hon. Okon 

The grand occasion was graced by an array of dignitaries from within and beyond Akamkpa. Among the notable attendees was the Member Representing Akamkpa/Biase Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Emil Inyang, who commended Akposi's leadership and expressed optimism in his ability to drive sustainable development in the local government..

Also present were Hon. Emmanuel Ironbar, Chief of Staff to the Governor; Hon. Okon Owuna and Rt. Hon. Linus Bassey Etim, members representing Akamkpa 1 and 2 in the Cross River State House of Assembly; and Hon. LG Lawmaker Launch Scholarship Scheme to Address Out-of-school Challenges in Cal. Municipality

CALABAR — Hon. Edet Augustine Nyong Awards Scholarships to Students of Government Migrant Science and Technology College

The Councillor representing Ward 5 in the Calabar Municipality Legislative Council, Hon. Edet Augustine Nyong, has awarded scholarships to two deserving students of Government Migrant Science and Technology College, Ekorinim, in Calabar Municipality.

The kind gesture took place yesterday in Calabar during the school's inter-house sports celebration. The lawmaker, who was a special guest at the event, used the occasion to fulfill one of his campaign promises related to education.

Speaking shortly with journalists after the event, Nyong disclosed that one of his key commitments during his campaign was to reduce the high number of out-of-school children in Ward 5, Calabar Municipality. He expressed concern over the alarming school dropout rate in the ward and pledged to contribute his quota towards improving education.

As part of his efforts, Nyong has initiated a scholarship program aimed at encouraging students to stay in school. He revealed that the current awards represent the pilot phase of the initiative, with plans to expand the program in the future.

Beyond education, the lawmaker stated his commitment to making impactful legislations that would benefit the people of Ward 5 and ensure that the dividends of democracy are evenly distributed. He urged residents to remain steadfast in their support for Governor Prince Bassey Edet Otu's People First Agenda and commended Hon. James Anam, Chairman of Calabar Municipal Council, for his recently concluded JAMB scholarship program.

Additionally, Nyong called on relevant stakeholders to support the school in addressing infrastructural challenges. He noted that Government Migrant Science and Technology College currently shares facilities with Ekorinim Primary School, which does not provide a conducive learning environment for students.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the school dropout rate in Calabar Municipality stands at 25%, meaning that one out of every four students drops out of school. The councillor emphasized the need for more public officeholders to prioritize education and work towards reducing this alarming rate.

Ramadan: Anambra Govt Emphasizes Religious Harmony as Soludo Gains Muslim Community’s Support

AKWA — The Anambra State Government has reiterated its commitment to religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence and inclusivity as top officials joined the Muslim faithful to break their Ramadan fast at the Awka Central Mosque.

Speaking at the event during the Friday prayers on March 21, 2025, the Managing Director of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA), Mr. Ossy Onuko, emphasized the importance of unity, peace and coexistence among different religious groups in the state.

Mr. Onuko described the visit as a gesture of empathy and solidarity, acknowledging the sacrificial essence of Ramadan while recognizing the significant role of the Muslim community in Anambra.

"We are here to identify with our Muslim brothers in the celebration of their annual Ramadan fast. This is an emotional moment for us because it symbolizes what Nigeria stands for, unity and brotherhood. The All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) believes in being our brother's keeper. Onuko stated.

In response, the State Chairman of the Anambra State Northern Youth Development Association, Alhaji Musa Bello Shelleng, commended Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo for his developmental strides in infrastructure, education, and security, noting that both the Igbo and Hausa communities have benefitted from his leadership.

"We are not saying this because of elections but because of what we have seen. The roads built by Governor Soludo are used by everyone, both Igbo and Hausa. His free education policy benefits all children in Anambra, regardless of tribe or religion. These achievements are uncountable, and we commend him for all he has done." he said.

Shelleng further praised the improved security situation in Anambra under Soludo's leadership, stating that the state, once plagued by insecurity, is now safer.

"Before Soludo came, we faced serious security issues, but now, we sleep with our two eyes closed. No governor has worked the way Soludo is working. He has prioritized infrastructure, road construction, free education, and free healthcare for everyone in Anambra. We are part of this state and we have no other home apart from here, and the Hausa community would fully support Governor Soludo 100% and APGA in the upcoming governorship election" he said 

The event featured sharing of food, drinks and other logistics for the breaking of the fast, followed by the presentation of food items by the Muslim Community to Governor Soludo in appreciation of his support.
