HAEI Applauds C’River Speaker, Demands Full Inclusion of PWDs in Governance

CALABAR – The Hope Ability Empowerment Initiative (HAEI), a Civil Society Organisation committed to promoting the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities (PWDs), has lauded the Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, for his efforts in advancing disability inclusion in governance.

The commendation came during a recent courtesy visit to the Speaker, where HAEI presented him with an award in recognition of his support for inclusive legislative processes and his willingness to involve PWDs in policy formulation and state development.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Director of HAEI, Dr. Mrs. Martina Ongbonya Ntino, emphasised the need for total inclusion of persons with disabilities in all spheres of governance. She highlighted key areas such as:

Increased representation of PWDs in decision-making platforms;

Accessible infrastructure and services across public institutions;

Inclusive legislation that safeguards rights and ensures equal participation; and

Economic empowerment through access to education, jobs, and business opportunities.

Dr. Ntino stressed that full inclusion of persons with disabilities is both a human rights issue and a catalyst for development. "When we include people with diverse abilities in governance, we gain from their unique insights and contributions," she noted.

HAEI urged the State Assembly and other arms of government to translate their promises into actionable policies that promote the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities.

The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the government and stakeholders to create a more inclusive and equitable Cross River State.

C'River Diaspora Commission to hold Town Hall Meetings Across Nigeria

CALABAR — The Chairman of the Cross River State Diaspora Commission CRIDCOM Hon. Otu Okor, has disclosed the commission's plans to hold town hall meetings across the 36 states of the federation including the  FCT. 

The chairman informed that the tour is aimed towards harnessing opportunities while opening pathways for investments and encourage Cross Riverians in the Diaspora to participate productively towards the growth of Cross River State. 

"The essence of this critical Town Hall meeting is to create awareness, foster engagement, promote investment opportunities, and encourage Diaspora participation in the State's development."

"This  is set to be an all-inclusive gathering, where issues bothering on State development, opportunities for investments as well as other businesses-growth based issues will be chewed over." Otu stated. 

TDN gathered that the adequate arrangements have been made to ensure a successful and  valuable Town Hall Meetings even as the commission has promised to ensure that the Season Of Sweetness is experienced beyond the shores of Cross River State and Nigeria at large.

Recall that on the 27th of March, Governor Bassey Otu had set up the Cross River State Diaspora Commission with the aime of engaging Cross Riverians outside the state with policies and developmental programmes and projects leaverging on their human and material resources for the socioeconomic, cultural, and political advancement of Cross River State.

CALABAR — Cross River and Bayelsa states emerged as joint champions at the recent regional table tennis championship, with both powerhouses securing two gold medals each in a thrilling display of skills and competition.  

Cross River maintained its traditional dominance in women's events, claiming Gold in Women's Doubles while Bayelsa secured the Silver medel, Delta went for the Bronze. In the same feat, Cross River State secured Gold in Women's Singles with Abia and Ondo clinching Silver and  Bronze respectively. 

In the men's category, Bayelsa countered with equal prowess clinging two Golds in 

Men's Doubles and Single. Cross River went for Silver in the Men's Double with Edo securing  Bronze. In the Men's Single, Ondo clinched Gold and Akwa Ibom secured Bronze 

The tournament  coincided with  the 35 years Anniversary celebration of the club.

In his remarks the chairman of the club and Cross River State representative in the  NDDC board, Rt. Hon. Orok Otu Duke PhD, took the opportunity to celebrate the Canaan Table Tennis Team's unprecedented achievement of winning gold medals for the state for 35 consecutive years - the only team to maintain such consistent excellence.  

"This golden generation of Canaan players have written their names in history," Duke stated. "For 35 years, through three generations of athletes, they've brought nothing but gold to Cross River. This is no accident - it's the result of dedication, proper training, and Institutional support."  

He pledged his continued backing for the program: "I charge our champions to keep making us proud. The NDDC and Cross River state will continue to invest in these athletes who have become our golden ambassadors."  

Alleged Theft and Recovery of Transformers: Obudu Chairman Vows to Bring Perpetrators to Justice

In a renewed effort to tackle the growing menace of infrastructure looting in Obudu Local Government Area, the Council Chairman, Hon. (Amb) Peter Akonfe Undiandeye, KSM, has vowed to strengthen security measures and ensure that those behind the recent transformer thefts are brought to justice.

In an official statement released by Hon. Undiandeye and made available to the media, he recounted the events leading to the recovery. He received a distress call alerting him to the unauthorized movement of transformers from Obudu toward Vandeikya in Benue State. Acting swiftly in collaboration with security agencies operating in Obudu Local Government Area, the local government intercepted the vehicle transportating the stolen equipment.  While the transformers were successfully retrieved, the driver had fled the scene prior to their arrival.

He emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting that such thefts undermine community development and public trust. He assured residents that his administration is working closely with security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation aimed at identifying and prosecuting those involved in this and previous incidents of public asset theft. 

Undiandeye also acknowledged the public concerns regarding the recurring looting of public assets and called for collective vigilance. 

He urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with authorities, reaffirming his commitment to serving the people of Obudu with dignity and integrity.

Akposi Calls for Enhanced Security in Akamkpa, Hails SSA's Proactiveness

AKAMKPA — The Executive Chairman of Akamkpa Local Government Area, Hon. (Ophot) Felix Akposi KSJI, has called on the state government to assist in the combat of insecurity in the area the provision of infrastructures that will aide in abating insecurity such as good road network, logistics and operational vehicles for security agents. 

Akposi who made the appeal during a security and peace advocacy tour led by the State Security Adviser South, Lt. Commander Patrick Odiong (Rtd), in Akamkpa hailed the Security boss for his Proactiveness stance, adding that security remains his administration's priority. 

Describing Akamkpa as a peaceful and accommodating region, Hon. Akposi emphasised the council's readiness for inter-agency collaboration in addressing security challenges. “Akamkpa is open to collaboration. At the moment, Akamkpa is safe though funding has been a challenge owing to the numerous challenges in Akamkpa Local Government Area notably road network and patrol vehicles which the Local Government Council is trying to contain,” the Chairman stated.

The Chairman further highlighted the traditional governance structure in Akamkpa, applauding the harmonious leadership selection process among clans and villages in accordance with cultural norms. He praised the Paramount Ruler, HRM Ophot Agbor Ewa Ebani, for maintaining synergy with the people and ensuring the Traditional Rulers' Council remains responsive and supportive of government initiatives.

Earlier, the State Security Adviser South, Lt. Commander Odiong (Rtd), stressed the imperative of partnership in tackling the complexities of modern-day insecurity. He urged for seamless coordination among security agencies, underlining the need for transparency and unity of purpose. “Teamwork and synergy of all relevant stakeholders is key to the success we must strive for. There must be coordination and integration. Don't keep any information because you want to take the glory,” he warned.

Also lending his voice, the Divisional Police Officer of Akamkpa Urban, SUPOL Ini Johnson, commended the Council for recognising the efforts of the police, particularly with the commemoration of National Police Day under the current administration.

Natasha/Akpabio: Gov. Otu's Aide Drags Senator Ekpeyong Over Natasha's Allegations

CALABAR — The political landscape in Cross River State has been thrown into turmoil following allegations by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senator Asuquo Ekpeyong Jr, the lawmaker representing the Southern Senatorial District of the state. The controversy has now taken a new turn as an aide to Governor Bassey Otu has joined the fray, demanding accountability from Senator Ekpeyong.

Senator Natasha had alleged that Senator Ekpeyong was instructed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio to transport former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello to Hilton Hotel in Abuja for a secret meeting. According to her, the meeting was allegedly convened to orchestrate her recall from the Senate and, even more alarmingly, to plot an attempt on her life outside Abuja.

The allegations have triggered widespread concern among constituents of the Southern Senatorial District, with many calling for immediate clarification. Among those leading the call is Citizen Ekanem Essien, Senior Special Assistant on Digital Media to Governor Otu who has publicly questioned Senator Ekpeyong’s role in the alleged scheme.

“The people of the Southern Senatorial District did not elect Senator Ekpeyong to run personal errands or act as a chauffeur for anyone. This matter is grave, and we demand a clear explanation,” the aide stated.

Critics argue that Senator Ekpeyong’s affiliations within the Senate President makes the allegations appear plausible, adding fuel to the controversy. Many constituents have echoed the question raised by Senator Natasha: “When did Distinguished Senator Asuquo Ekpeyong Jr become a personal driver to the Senate President?”

As public scrutiny intensifies, political analysts caution that failure to address the allegations could have serious consequences for Senator Ekpeyong’s political career. Meanwhile, neither Senator Ekpeyong nor Senate President Akpabio has issued an official response to the claims.

The demand for accountability continues to grow, with calls for a Town Hall meeting where Senator Ekpeyong can clarify his position on the matter. Observers are closely watching the unfolding political drama, as the pressure on the senator mounts

UNICAL Set to Host International Conference on Indigenous Knowledge Systems

CALABAR — The University of Calabar (UNICAL) is set to host the 26th Annual International Conference of the African Council for Communication Education (ACCE), Nigeria chapter, from October 21 to 24, 2025. Themed "Communication and Indigenous Knowledge Systems in the Era of AI, Big Data, and Cultural Transformation," the conference will bring together scholars, media professionals, and policymakers from across Africa and beyond.

The University of Calabar's  Department of Mass Communication, will be hosting event which aims to explore how Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) can be preserved and adapted in the face of rapid digital transformation. Key discussions will cover journalism, broadcasting, media ethics, public relations, advertising, and development communication, among other topics.

Speaking on the significance of the conference, Dr. Lawrence Ekwok, Chairman of the Conference Organizing Committee, stated, "This conference will provide a crucial platform for academics and practitioners to discuss how indigenous knowledge can coexist with emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, and Virtual Reality."

The ACCE has called for abstract submissions from researchers interested in presenting at the conference, with a deadline set for August 24, 2025. Registration is open for early-bird participants until May 30, 2025, offering access to networking opportunities and discussions on the future of IKS in Africa's communication landscape.

Prospective participants are encouraged to submit abstracts aligned with sub-themes, including journalism, public relations, advertising, and political communication. Abstracts, limited to 250 words, must be submitted by August 24, 2025, to accenigeriaconferences@gmail.com.

Dr. Ibituru Pepple, ACCE National Secretary, reiterated the value of the conference, noting, "This event will challenge participants to think critically about how to preserve and adapt indigenous communication systems within modern frameworks."

The conference's 14 sub-themes include critical areas such as media ethics, broadcasting studies, and science communication, reflecting its broad scope. Discussions will address long-standing challenges of IKS marginalization and offer strategies for its integration into Africa's communication landscape

C’River Canaan Queens to Represent Nigeria at 2025 African Club Table Tennis Championships in Tunisia

CALABAR - Canaan Queens, the women's team of Canaan Table Tennis Club, Calabar, have been approved by the Nigerian Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) to represent Nigeria at the 2025 African Club Table Tennis Championships. The tournament will take place from February 22 to 24, 2025, in Tunis, Tunisia.

This approval follows Canaan Queens' remarkable performance at the 2024 African Club Table Tennis Championships held in Benghazi, Libya, where they emerged as runners-up. The team showcased their skills by defeating top clubs like Benghazi Al-Jadida Table Tennis Club of Libya and Commercial Bank Club of Ethiopia, before falling to Petrojet Table Tennis Club of Egypt in the finals. Their achievements in Libya underscored their status as one of Africa's leading table tennis teams.

In a statement issued by NTTF Secretary-General Oladayo Abulude, the federation confirmed that Canaan Queens would bear responsibility for their travel visas, flight tickets, and accommodation for the tournament. The club has also been advised to complete their registration promptly to avoid penalties for non-appearance, as stipulated by the championship organizers.

The 2025 tournament, organized by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Africa and hosted by the Tunisian Table Tennis Federation, will feature top teams from across the continent. The competition will take place at the Palais des Sports El Menzah, with both men's and women's team events structured in group and knockout formats.

Speaking on the team's preparation, Rt. Hon. Orok Duke, Chairman of Canaan Table Tennis Club, expressed confidence in the team's ability to excel in Tunisia. "We are proud to represent Nigeria again on the continental stage. Our focus is on improving our performance and making the nation proud," he said.

Relocate from C'River or Else, Govt Warns Illegal Miners

CALABAR — The Cross River State Government has issued a stern warning to illegal miners, urging them to leave the state or face the full weight of the law. This follows the recent arrest of 21 suspected illegal miners by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area.

The suspects were paraded in Calabar by the NSCDC State Commandant, Dr. Charles Brown, who revealed that the operation was conducted in collaboration with the state anti-illegal mining committee, the task force, and other security agencies. According to him, illegal mining not only robs the government of revenue but also poses significant environmental and security risks.

"Illegal mining activities will no longer be tolerated in Cross River State. We are sending a strong message to those involved: relocate or be ready to face legal consequences," Dr. Brown warned. He added that the arrested suspects would be prosecuted after investigations are completed.

Backing the crackdown, Hon. Prince Paul Effiong, chairman of the anti-illegal mining committee and task force, emphasized that his team, which comprises operatives from the Civil Defence Corps, police, and military, would stop at nothing to rid the state of illegal miners.

"This is a warning to illegal miners: relocate now or face the consequences. We will ensure strict enforcement of mining regulations in the state," Effiong stated.

The latest action is in line with the government's earlier directive mandating all mineral title holders to undergo a clearance process to verify their legitimacy and curb illegal mining.

Authorities have also urged citizens to provide credible intelligence on illegal mining activities to sustain the fight against the menace and protect Cross River's environment and resources.
