ITIGIDI, – The 65th Independence Day celebration in Abi Local Government Area turned into a platform for recognition of visionary leadership, as the Council Chairman, Obol Hon. Egbala Bassey, was celebrated for his commitment to empowering the younger generation.

Speaking during the celebration, the Special Assistant on Inter-Governmental Affairs, Amb. Samuel Ben, described Obol Bassey as a leader who has consistently aligned governance with the aspirations of youths in the area.

According to Amb. Ben, the council boss's policies and initiatives have created avenues for skills development, mentorship, and opportunities that raise the confidence of young people in their own future. "Independence is about freedom and self-reliance, and the chairman has translated this into action by raising independent stars among our youths," he said.

He further stressed that beyond youth development, the chairman has also strengthened ties with sister government agencies, ensuring the LGA benefits from intergovernmental collaborations.

The convener of the awards, Archbishop Josef Bassey, described Governor Bassey Edet Otu as a "turn-around manager" whose quiet but intentional leadership has repositioned the state from ruins into a path of renewal. While presenting the Destiny Grand Commander Award to the Governor (represented by his Chief of Staff, Hon. Dr. Emmanuel Ironbar), Archbishop Bassey said:

"When Cross River State was in ruins, we stood up and said the state was in ruins. We declared that nothing meaningful was happening here. They fought us, but we insisted: you cannot wreck this state, not while some of us are alive. We did the best we could.

Now, under your watch, we see the state being rebuilt. It is only right and proper that when people do wrong, we say, 'You are doing wrong.' And when people do well, we must also say, 'You are doing well.' If tomorrow you no longer do well, we will say, 'Sir, you were doing well, but we don't know what you are doing now.' The truth must be told at all times.

And so today we say, you are doing well. You have done well so far. You have refused to talk, but we have the facts, the data, the letters, all manner of documents about what happened in the previous administration. We also know the comprehensive report that was delivered at the end of the day. We saw the mess. Yet you have not said one word.

You have not presented the matter to the public, but you have quietly gone about changing things. The work you have done is what, in business parlance, is called the work of a turnaround manager. When a business has collapsed, what it needs is a special kind of skill. That is what you have demonstrated. That is what you are doing.

How you are doing it, we may not fully know, but we know we are praying for you. And you can count on the goodwill of every true friend, every true investor in Cross River State, because we want our state to succeed, and we will continue to support you as long as you continue on this path.

Therefore, it is our honor and privilege to present to you today the Destiny Cross River Grand Commander Award, bestowed upon Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu as an eternal witness to the historic demonstration of legendary patriotism in leadership and governance, redeeming our state from the ruins of the dark years and repositioning her on the path of greater glory."

Governor Otu, in his response delivered by Ironbar, emphasized the need to celebrate patriots while they are alive, stressing that recognition should not wait until heroes have passed away.

"Too often, we wait until our heroes are gone before acknowledging their immense contributions. What you have done today is worthy of emulation because celebrating living patriots strengthens the culture of sacrifice and inspires many more to follow their example," Otu said.

He assured Cross Riverians of his administration's commitment to rebuilding institutions, strengthening security, partnering with the judiciary and paramilitary agencies, and creating an environment attractive to investors. One of the most emotional moments of the night came from Prof. Kelvin Etta, former Vice Chancellor of UNICAL and CRUTECH, who received the Destiny Patriarchal Defender Emeritus Award. He used his acceptance speech to plead for forgiveness from Cross Riverians:

"If there's anyone I must have hurt or offended in the course of my public service and in my determination to leave behind beautiful footprints in the sands of time, please forgive me. It was never intentional but born out of passion to serve and succeed," he said, drawing a long applause from the audience.

Another honouree, Chief Kanu Godwin Agabi (SAN, CON),  described the recognition as "a tonic that will spur Chief Agabi to continue doing more for Cross River and Nigeria."

2027: Re-elected PDP Organizing Secretary, Francis Ekeng Unveils Agenda to End Party Disunity

CALABAR -The re-elected Organising Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State, Mr. Francis Ekeng, has pledged to deepen transparency and inclusiveness in the party’s processes. He outlined fresh strategies to strengthen internal cohesion and prevent disunity as the PDP prepares for the 2027 general elections.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with our correspondent, Ekeng said he was humbled by the confidence reposed in him by delegates, having secured 1,499 votes at the just-concluded state congress.

“This is a mandate I don’t take lightly. The organising secretary’s role is about fairness, balance, and inclusiveness. My duty is to ensure that all congresses, primaries, and mobilisations reflect the true spirit of democracy within our party,” he said.

Ekeng, who secured a second term during the party’s just-concluded state congress, said his mandate was both “humbling and an honour,” adding that it reflected the trust and confidence of party members in his leadership.

“This mandate is not just a recognition of my efforts, but also a testament to the trust and confidence the party members have in me to drive the party’s growth and success,” he stated.

Speaking on the significance of the Awards, the Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, Hon. Mike Mbang declared:

“The Destiny Cross River Awards is the biggest statement we have made in recent times as a people. It is a bold celebration of patriotism and historic sacrifice at a time when selfishness and greed dominate our nation. These men are not being honoured for what they achieved for themselves, but for what they gave up, what they defended, and the prices they paid so Cross River can move closer to her prophetic destiny.”

According to him, the Awards is not just a ceremony, but a covenant moment, where the sacrifices of true patriots will be immortalised as a guiding light for future generations.

The organisers; The Destiny Cross River Covenant Project Council described the night as a “roll call of greatness” and a prophetic convergence where history and destiny meet. They called on the people of Cross River, as well as friends and admirers of the honourees across Nigeria, to gather in Calabar and stand as witnesses to a night where patriotism is rewarded, sacrifice is honoured, and destiny is sealed.
