OGOJA —   Youths across Northern sensational district of Cross River have been urged to take decisive ownership of their future by actively participating in the electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This call was made during the Grand Finale of the  Future First, Youth Engagement and Assesment Tour led by the Cross River State chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), where the State Chairman, Emmanuel Olayi, charged young people to register for their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and position themselves as critical stakeholders in shaping governance outcomes.

Addressing a large gathering of youth leaders, students, and community representatives in Ogoja, the Olayi emphasized that the power to determine the direction of the state and the nation lies significantly in the hands of young voters.

“We cannot continue to claim that we have the largest population of voters and fail to take advantage of it,” he said. “Every young person who has not registered must take advantage of the ongoing registration process. Register, get your voter card, and prepare to make decisions that will define our collective future.”

The engagement forms part of a statewide consultation tour aimed at mobilising youths, assessing development projects, and strengthening grassroots participation in governance. The NYCN leadership had earlier visited several parts of the Northern Senatorial District, including Obudu, Yala, Bekwarra, and Obanliku, where they interacted with communities and evaluated ongoing government projects.

Beyond voter registration, the Chairman warned against political apathy and the manipulation of youths for electoral violence, stressing that young people must resist being used as instruments of conflict.

“You don’t need to fight or harm anyone because of politics,” he cautioned. “If we destroy ourselves, who will be left to build the future we desire? Politics should not divide us—it should empower us.”

Participants at the event echoed the call for unity, peace, and responsible civic engagement. Various youth coordinators from across the region reaffirmed their commitment to peaceful coexistence and pledged to mobilise their peers toward constructive participation in the democratic process.

In goodwill messages, speakers emphasized the importance of integrity, discipline, and active involvement in community development, noting that the future of Cross River State depends largely on the choices made by its young population.

Student leaders were also not left out, as representatives of Northern Cross River student bodies commended the initiative and reiterated their readiness to be fully engaged in shaping policies that affect their future.

The NYCN leadership further disclosed that ongoing youth-focused programmes, including empowerment initiatives, skills acquisition, and business support schemes, would be expanded, with inputs from young people forming part of recommendations to government.

As political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of 2027, stakeholders at the event agreed that increased voter education, inclusion, and youth-driven advocacy will be crucial in ensuring credible elections and sustainable development in Cross River State.

The engagement ended with a renewed call to action: that young people must move beyond passive observation and become active participants in governance—starting with the simple but powerful act of registering and voting.

IKOM/BOKI: Victor Abang Showcases Impact Ahead of 2027 Re-Election Bid

The member representing Boki/Ikom Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Victor Abang, has formally declared his intention to seek a second term in the 2027 general elections, highlighting his legislative achievements and grassroots interventions as justification for continuity.

Speaking during his official declaration address to constituents and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abang said his first tenure has been marked by purposeful representation, people-driven legislation, and tangible development across the constituency.

He noted that since his inauguration on June 13, 2023, as the fifth representative of Boki/Ikom in the Fourth Republic, his focus has been on translating the mandate of the people into measurable outcomes. According to him, his legislative record includes sponsorship of key bills such as the proposed establishment of a Federal College of Agriculture (Forestry) in Okundi, a Federal College of Education (Technical) in Ikom, and a Federal Medical Centre in Boki.

Other legislative efforts, he said, include amendments to the Labour Act, the National Park Service Act, and the proposed establishment of the Elite Sheriff Corps, all aimed at strengthening governance and improving service delivery.

Beyond lawmaking, Abang emphasized his motions on critical constituency concerns, including Nigeria–Cameroon boundary issues, elephant invasions in Bamba, and the need for improved border security infrastructure. CALABAR – A newly formed pressure group, Cross River Rebirth Alliance, has declared its intention to mobilise voters across the state to unseat Governor Bassey Otu in the 2027 general elections, accusing his administration of prioritising religious engagements over governance.

In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by its Coordinator, Elder Bassey Christopher Bassey, and Secretary, Comrade Callistus Imong, the group expressed dissatisfaction with what it described as the state’s steady decline, alleging that governance has taken a back seat to church-related activities promoted by the first family.

The group claimed that rather than focusing on critical sectors such as infrastructure, healthcare, tourism, and job creation, the current administration has devoted more attention to organising religious gatherings, including solemn assemblies, which it said have not translated into tangible development outcomes for residents.

According to the statement, “the most disappointing aspect of the current administration is the apparent shift of focus from governance to religious activities, leaving the people to grapple with worsening economic conditions and neglect of essential services.”

The Alliance further alleged that Cross River State has experienced economic hardship, rising unemployment, and deteriorating public infrastructure in the last three years, describing the situation as “a regime of hunger in the midst of plenty.”

It also criticised the administration of former governor Ben Ayade, blaming it for laying the foundation of what it termed the state’s decline, while contrasting the period with the administrations of Donald Duke and Liyel Imoke, which it said recorded notable progress in governance and development.

The group alleged that key sectors such as tourism and healthcare have been neglected, while many communities, particularly in rural areas, remain inaccessible due to poor road infrastructure.

It further accused those in government of lacking transparency in the management of public funds, claiming that the benefits of governance are concentrated among a few individuals close to power, while the majority of citizens continue to struggle.

The Cross River Rebirth Alliance said it would embark on aggressive grassroots mobilisation across the 18 local government areas of the state to sensitise residents and galvanise support against the governor’s re-election bid.

“The 2027 election presents an opportunity for the people to reclaim their state. We are committed to mobilising voters to ensure that this administration does not return to power,” the group stated.

As of the time of filing this report, the Cross River State Government had not issued an official response to the allegations.

C’River LG Recruitment Scandal: Panel Begins Probe as Commission Seeks Public Evidence

CALABAR –The Cross River State Local Government Service Commission (CRSLGSB) has announced the commencement of a formal investigation into the controversial local government recruitment exercise carried out by the immediate past commission, calling on members of the public to submit evidence and testimonies.

Chairman of the Commission, Eyo Nsa Ekpo Esq., disclosed this on Monday during a press interaction at the Commission’s headquarters, stating that the move followed the state government’s decision to dissolve the previous commission over alleged irregularities in the recruitment process.

According to Ekpo, a five-member investigative panel headed by Elder Gershom Davies, with Barrister Mrs. Mary Theresa Ikwen, former Head of Service, as secretary, has already begun sitting at the Conference Room of the Office of the Head of Service in Calabar.

He explained that the panel was mandated to probe what he described as an “unwholesome” recruitment exercise that failed to follow due process, urging affected persons and individuals with credible information to come forward.

“The essence of this interaction is to intimate the public that the panel is now sitting and to urge all those who have useful information regarding that recruitment exercise to appear before it. This includes those who were recruited but have not been payrolled, as well as those who witnessed or were involved in any aspect of the process,” Ekpo said.

The chairman raised concerns over reports of intimidation allegedly targeted at potential witnesses, assuring that the state government would provide adequate protection and even incentives for those willing to testify.

“We are aware that some persons are being intimidated not to appear before the panel. We want to assure the public that the government will protect and reward anyone who comes forward to tell the truth,” he added.

Providing insight into the scale of the alleged irregularities, Ekpo revealed that official records showed that only 900 employment slots were approved by the government in two batches of 500 and 400, but the number of purported recruitments reportedly surged to over 7,500.

He further noted that standard recruitment procedures, including the use of a digital application platform, verification of credentials, and structured interviews, were not followed. Instead, forms were allegedly distributed manually, and names forwarded for payroll placement without proper screening.

“A lot happened that should not have happened. People were pressured, and due process was completely ignored. This is why the government is determined to unravel everything and ensure that such practices do not recur,” he stated.

On the growing agitation among some individuals claiming to have received appointment letters, Ekpo maintained that while citizens have the constitutional right to seek legal redress or form associations, the commission remains focused on ensuring a thorough and transparent investigation.

“No one can be stopped from approaching the court if they feel aggrieved. That is their fundamental right. However, we believe this panel provides an opportunity for all issues to be properly examined in the interest of justice and the state,” he said.

The panel, he disclosed, will sit daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and will subsequently move across the three senatorial districts—Southern, Central, and Northern—to ensure wider access for affected individuals.

While declining to speculate on the fate of those allegedly recruited, Ekpo noted that the final decision would depend on the recommendations of the panel and the state government’s white paper.

He, however, assured that the outcome of the investigation would align with the broader interest of Cross Riverians.

“This is a people-first government. Whatever decision is taken at the end of this process will be guided by fairness, justice, and the overall good of the state,” he said.

The investigation is expected to shed light on one of the most contentious public sector recruitment exercises in recent times in the state.

OBUDU – Youth leaders in Cross River State have issued a strong warning against political violence ahead of the 2027 elections, declaring that no political ambition is worth the life of any young person.

The message was delivered during a stakeholder engagement by the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Cross River State chapter, as part of its ongoing statewide tour aimed at promoting unity, peace, and responsible civic participation among young people.

Speaking during a visit to a traditional institution in Obudu, the State Chairman of NYCN, Emmanuel Olayi, emphasized that youths must resist being used as tools of violence by political actors. He stressed that while young people have the right to support candidates of their choice, such support must be exercised within the confines of the law and without resorting to violence.

“No young person should kill another young person because of someone else’s ambition,” Olayi said. “What we owe any leader is our support, not our lives. We must protect ourselves, our communities, and our future.”

The youth council noted that with young people forming the majority of the population, their role in shaping a peaceful electoral process is critical. The leadership warned that the recurring trend of election-related violence, often driven by youths, poses a serious threat to community stability and development.

As part of its “Future First” campaign, the council is engaging youth leaders, institutions, and community stakeholders across local government areas to reinforce the values of unity and non-violence. The initiative also seeks to create platforms for young people to voice their concerns on development issues and channel them to appropriate authorities.

In his remarks, HRH Chief Felix Abanbeshie Okudare-Paramount Ruler OF Obudu commended the youth leaders for their proactive approach and urged them to intensify grassroots sensitization.
