NDDC Bolsters Waste Management Efforts in Cross River with 30 New Dumpsters

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), through the State Representative, Rt. Hon. Orok Otu Duke, has delivered the third batch of dumpsters to Cross River State, a strategic intervention aimed at addressing the persistent refuse disposal challenges in the state, particularly around Watt and Marian markets. Speaking during the handover ceremony, Chief Duke lauded the progress made in waste management within the state but cautioned against complacency. "The issue of waste management has improved considerably, but we must not rest on our laurels. The population of our state capital is growing, and with it comes an increase in waste. We must not wait until refuse overflows into the streets. Proactive measures are essential to ensure that we remain on top of this issue," he stated.

Chief Duke further highlighted the intrinsic value of cleanliness, describing it as a virtue integral to the identity of the people of Cross River. "Cleanliness is next to Godliness. We are not known as dirty people but as a clean and radiant people whose beauty is reflected in our actions and way of life. This is a legacy we must sustain for posterity," he added.

The timely arrival of the dumpsters has been met with widespread commendation, particularly among residents and traders in the state capital. Both Watt and Marian markets, vital economic hubs, have long grappled with refuse disposal challenges. Speaking further, Duke stated, "We are expecting more Refuse bins which are delivered in batches because of the professional efforts, material and time needed to fabricate these high quality bins".

Chief Duke also took the opportunity to extol the administration of Governor Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu, describing him as a unifier whose leadership has ushered in an economic renaissance in the state. He lauded the Governor's efforts in transforming the state's narrative through developmental strides and a focus on improving infrastructure and economic opportunities. "The facelift given to Cross River under Governor Otu's leadership has not only enhanced its aesthetic appeal but also its economic vibrancy," he remarked.

Alleged Rift Between Gov. Otu and Sen. Ekpenyong: Obong of Calabar Issues Stern Warning Against Divisive Politics

The Obong of Calabar, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V, has cautioned against divisive actions and falsehoods within the Efik community, urging unity and mutual support as essential for the growth of Cross River State. Speaking at the 2024 edition of Utomo Obong on December 21 in Calabar, the revered monarch addressed speculations regarding the political ambitions of Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong Jr., urging the people to desist from spreading misinformation.  

"I've heard controversial talks that Senator Asuquo intends to be the next Governor," the Obong said. "Let us desist from such unhealthy practices. If you need something from anyone, including Governor Bassey Edet Otu, don't resort to lies or conspiracies to gain favors." He emphasized the importance of unity among Efik leaders, charging them to work collaboratively with the governor for the ultimate development of the state.  

The monarch lamented that divisive actions, particularly those aimed at undermining young leaders, could jeopardize the state's progress. "If we refuse to work together, we may find ourselves in a worse state after eight years," he warned. The Obong called for transparency and harmony, discouraging malicious gossip and unwarranted conflicts within the community.  

In his address, the Obong also commended Senator Bassey Otu, the Governor of Cross River State, for his leadership and representation. He extended gratitude to Senator Ekpenyong for chairing the event and for his dedication to promoting Efik culture, noting his ability to attract National Assembly colleagues to the occasion. "His love and pride for his cultural heritage are evident, and his large-heartedness speaks volumes," the monarch stated.  

The Obong further celebrated the vibrant display of Efik heritage, expressing joy at the participation of various clans in paying homage to the Efik Kingdom. He highlighted the significance of love and peace in fostering communal harmony and advancing societal progress.

The highly anticipated tournament doubles as the 10th edition of the ELICRIS Cups National Table Tennis Top 32 Invitational Championship, a premier event in the nation's sporting calendar.

The championship which takes place at the iconic Sir Chief Molade Okoya Thomas Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, draws the nation's finest table tennis talents with Players arriving last Sunday, December 22, 2024, for the three-day event, with matches commencing on Monday, December 23, and set to culminate on Tuesday, December 24, 2024.

This year's competition features both the Men's Singles and Women's Singles categories, contested in two divisions: the Open category and the Under-19 (U-19) category. A total of 64 elite players—32 men and 32 women—have been invited, with reserves also present to ensure a seamless competition.

The tournament structure comprises two stages: a group stage played in a round-robin format, followed by an intense knockout phase. Matches in the group stage and the early knockout rounds are played over five games, while the semi-final and final matches are decided in a best-of-seven format.
