CALABAR —The Cross River State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists has described the first lady of Cross River State Her Excellency, Bishop Dr. Eyoanwan Bassey Otu as a humanitarian  whose visionary leadership inspires many to greater achievements. 

In a congratulatory message signed by Archibong Bassey, the state Chairman of NUJ to the First Lady in celebration of her recognition and induction into the prestigious UN 1000 African Women Network in New York. The union described the recognition as well deserved adding that the first lady being a beacon of selfless service and a champion of the 'People-First' governance philosophy, she exemplify true leadership, and the union is proud to celebrate the remarkable milestone with her.

"This global honor is a testament to your unwavering dedication to humanitarian service, social development, and the empowerment of women and girls. Your visionary leadership, compassion, and impactful initiatives continue to inspire hope and transform lives, not just in Cross River State but beyond." The statement reads in part.

Bassey, expressed believe that the recognition by the United Nations 1000 African Women Network in New York will propel the First Lady to do more for women, girls and Humanity in social development, health and empowerments programs.

CALABAR — The governor of  Cross River State has distanced  himself from the position of the South-South Governors Forum over the declaration of a state of emergency and subsequent suspension of the governor of River State and the House of Assembly of the state by president Bola Tinubu. 

In a statement credited to Dr. Peter Odey acting Governor of Cross River State, Odey insisted that the forum did not consult him nor seek his opinion on the matter before issuing the statement.

The statement signed by his Press Secretary, Fred Abua Esq., reads in parts: 
"The position of the forum does not reflect the views of the Government of Cross River State, which fully aligns with the decision of Mr. President, taken in the best interest of national security, peace, and stability."  

 "Every responsible government must prioritize the protection of lives and property, and where circumstances necessitate decisive action, such measures should be supported for the greater good of our democracy and national unity. Cross River State remains committed to upholding constitutional governance and will continue to collaborate with the Federal Government in ensuring peace, security, and stability across the country."

CALABAR — Governor of Cross River State, Sen. (Prince) Bassey Edet Otu, has congratulated Rt. Hon. (Chief) Orok Otu Duke, JP, PhD, on earning his doctorate. The Governor described the achievement as a testament to Dr. Duke's dedication to knowledge and service.

"Dr. Duke's commitment to learning and excellence is inspiring. We celebrate this well-deserved honor and look forward to his continued impact," Governor Otu said.

Dr. Duke, a respected political leader, Chairman of Canaan Table Tennis Club, and Cross River State Representative on the NDDC board, has been instrumental in governance, youth development, and sports.

In a similar message, the First Lady of Cross River State, Bishop. (Mrs.) Eyoanwan Otu, also congratulated Dr. Duke, describing his doctorate as a symbol of perseverance and intellectual growth.

CALABAR — Not less than 13,000 students are set to Convocate  this weekend, during the 37th Convocation of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) with 66 students bagging First-Class honors in various fields.

In a pre-convocation press briefing, the Vice Chancellor of the Institution, Prof. Florence Obi, revealed that the conversation will be a landmark celebration of academic excellence and will also feature the investiture of three distinguished scholars as Professors Emeritus in recognition of their contributions to research and education.

Obi, also disclosed that the graduates span various academic levels, including undergraduate, postgraduate, and diploma programs. A total of 572 students will be awarded Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees, while 249 will receive Postgraduate Diplomas (PGD), and 7 will be conferred with Post-Doctoral Diplomas in Education.

For undergraduate programs, 3,143 students bagged Second-Class Upper Division, while 9,257 earned Second-Class Lower Division. Additionally, 925 students graduated with Third-Class degrees, and 7 will be graduating with Pass degrees. The university will also award diplomas to students in various fields, with 4 graduating with Distinction, 135 with Merit, and 42 with Credit.

Obi whose administration is winding down in a few months, revealed that the University of Calabar since its founding in 1975 to date, has churned out a total of 168,786 graduates in diverse areas of human endeavour.

She reaffirmed the university's commitment to academic excellence and research advancement, emphasizing that UNICAL continues to enhance its global competitiveness. She noted that the convocation will attract dignitaries from the academic, political, and corporate sectors, such as the senate President Sen. Godswill Akpabio, Minister of FCT, Barr Nyewsom Wike, Unoma Akpabio, Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State, Major Gen. Moses Obi, Justice Emmanuel Akomaye Agim, Prince Arthur Eze etc.

The ceremony will not only celebrate the achievements of the graduating students but also highlight UNICAL's dedication to producing well-rounded graduates equipped to meet the demands of an evolving world.

OGOJA  In a significant effort to improve healthcare accessibility, Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe has funded one-year free health insurance coverage for 500 constituents across the five local government areas of Cross River North Senatorial District.

The initiative, #JariCare Health Insurance, is designed to provide unhindered access to quality medical care, ensuring that beneficiaries receive essential health services without financial hardship. Senator Jarigbe emphasized that this intervention transcends political affiliations, reaffirming his commitment to prioritizing the well-being of his people above partisan considerations.

Speaking at the cheque presentation ceremony held at General Hospital, Ogoja, Senator Jarigbe, represented by Esther Ellah, CEO of Dazzle Empowerment Initiative, implored beneficiaries to take full advantage of the program while urging them to ensure proper identification when accessing medical services to facilitate seamless healthcare delivery.

The lawmaker described the initiative as the initial phase of a broader humanitarian endeavor aimed at fortifying healthcare accessibility within the region.

"Healthcare is not a privilege; it is a fundamental right. While politics plays a role in governance, true leadership is measured by direct impact on people's lives. This initiative is about securing health and dignity, not political gains," he asserted.

Receiving the cheque on behalf of the Cross River State Health Insurance Agency, Chief Godwin Iyala, the agency's Director General, commended Senator Jarigbe's unwavering dedication to public health. He emphasized that the intervention aligns seamlessly with Governor Bassey Otu's 'People First' agenda and assured that rigorous monitoring and evaluation mechanisms would be implemented to guarantee the judicious allocation of funds.

Iyala further encouraged beneficiaries to become advocates of the scheme, highlighting its far-reaching impact on individual well-being and the broader socio-economic landscape. He also extended a call to philanthropists, corporate entities, and political leaders to emulate Senator Jarigbe's proactive approach, stressing that social health insurance is a critical safeguard against the financial strain of out-of-pocket medical expenses.

Dr. Ugbe Christopher, Medical Superintendent of General Hospital, Ogoja, speaking on behalf of medical professionals in the district, described the initiative as "a transformative intervention that will bridge critical gaps in healthcare access for indigent constituents."

He commended Senator Jarigbe's sustained efforts in strengthening the healthcare sector and assured the public that healthcare professionals remain committed to providing quality medical services. A Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) located in Idiroko, within the lpokia Local Government Area of Ogun State, was reportedly attacked on Sunday, resulting in the death of a 54-year-old Prophet, Yomi Adetula. 

Naijaonpoint learnt that the attackers arrived at the CCC Eagle Parish on Baggage Road, Odo Eran, ldiroko, at approximately 10:30 AM and opened fire during the ongoing service. 

According to Daily Trust, the three gunmen specifically targeted Adetula, inflicting fatal injuries, including a severe blow to his head with an axe. 

The State Command Police Spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the occurrence of this tragic event in a statement released on Sunday afternoon. 

"Police officers raced to the scene and saw on Yomi Adetula, 'M', aged 54 years lifeless in the pool of blood which stained his white celestial garment lying face up. 


"On careful observation, his body was riddled with bullets and his head was not speared... to ensure the victim was really dead, it was mangled with axe. 

"On police inquiry, the information further gathered that three men came into the church, brought out a long double barrel gun aimed at their target and fired a shot that brought the deceased down," she said. 

The Police Publicist said the corpse had been deposited at the General Hospital Morgue, Ilaro. 

She added that the command had begun moves to arrest the suspects who fled into the border area. 

"Normalcy has been restored while possible clues will be revealed in the coming days as investigation has been launched into the very sad occurrence,'Odutola said.

PORT HARCOURT — Rivers State is currently embroiled in a political crisis as Governor Siminalayi Fubara's 19 commissioners have initiated legal action against the Martin Amaewhule-led House of Assembly. The commissioners are seeking to prevent the Assembly from nullifying their appointments, which were approved by four lawmakers loyal to Governor Fubara. 

This legal move follows a recent Supreme Court decision affirming Martin Amaewhule as the legitimate Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, dismissing a cross-appeal by Governor Fubara. The commissioners are requesting an interlocutory injunction to stop the Assembly from enforcing resolutions passed on March 5, 2025, that declared their appointments void. They also seek to bar the Assembly from interfering in their official duties. 

In a related development, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (retired), Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RISIEC), along with his commissioners, has filed a lawsuit challenging the Assembly's authority to summon them regarding the nullified October 2024 Local Government Elections. The Assembly had initially given Enebeli a 48-hour ultimatum to appear, later extending it by 72 hours after he failed to comply. 

Presiding over the matter, Justice Frank Onyiri granted permission for the claimants to serve the Assembly through substituted means and adjourned the hearing to April 17, 2025. 

Meanwhile, the Rivers State House of Assembly has reiterated its summons for RISIEC officials to explain the funding sources for the nullified local government election and the planned expenditure for a new election scheduled for August 9, 2025. The Assembly has also urged Governor Fubara to present the 2025 Appropriation Bill, warning of potential legislative action if he fails to do so. 

Amid these tensions, the Rivers State Police Command has pledged to address threats to national security, following warnings from militant groups about possible attacks on oil installations due to the ongoing political unrest. Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju assured residents of the police's preparedness to handle any disturbances, stating that they are ready to maintain order in the state.

Calabar, March 7, 2025 — In commemoration of International Women's Day, the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Cross River State branch, has reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare and empowerment of women by donating essential items to the female ward of General Hospital, Calabar.

During the visit, FIDA Cross River announced it had adopted the female ward of General Hospital Calabar, pledging continued support and periodic interventions to improve the well-being of women receiving medical care. The donation, comprising various essential supplies, was warmly received by hospital management and patients.

Speaking at the event, the Chapter Chairperson of FIDA, Barr  Affiong Nkeruwem Onung emphasized the organisation's dedication to advocating for the rights of women and children, particularly through legal aid, mediation, and social support initiatives. She emphasized the significance of International Women's Day as a moment to reflect on both progress and persistent challenges in gender equality.

"As we celebrate women worldwide, we recognize the need to accelerate action towards gender equality. Our work extends beyond this donation; we provide pro bono legal services for victims of gender-based violence, offer mediation for troubled families, and advocate for policies that uplift women and children in our society," she stated.

Encouraging women in both rural and urban areas to embrace resilience and focus on self-empowerment, she reiterated FIDA's open-door policy for women facing abuse or discrimination, assuring them of legal and emotional support.

The hospital's management expressed profound gratitude to FIDA for the timely intervention. Doctor Kenneth Takim, the Medical Director of General Hospital, in an appreciation speech, noted that the gesture came at an opportune moment, aligning with the spirit of International Women's Day.
